Modeling QoE of Video Streaming in Wireless Networks with Large-Scale Measurement of User Behavior

Unraveling quality of experience (QoE) of video streaming is very challenging in bandwidth shared wireless networks. It is unclear how QoE metrics such as starvation probability and buffering time interact with dynamics of streaming traffic load. In this paper, we collect view records from one of the largest streaming providers in China over two weeks and perform an in-depth measurement study on flow arrival and viewing time that shed light on the real traffic pattern. Our most important observation is that the viewing time of streaming users fits a hyper-exponential distribution quite well. This implies that all the views can be categorized into two classes, short and long views with separated time scales. We then map the measured traffic pattern to bandwidth shared cellular networks and propose an analytical framework to compute the closed-form starvation probability on the basis of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Our framework can be naturally extended to investigate practical issues including the progressive downloading and the finite video duration. Extensive trace-driven simulations validate the accuracy of our models. Our study reveals that the starvation metrics of the short and long views possess different sensitivities to the scheduling priority at base station. Hence, a better QoE tradeoff between the short and long views has a potential to be leveraged by offering them different scheduling weights. The flow differentiation involves tremendous technical and non-technical challenges because video content is owned by content providers but not the network operators and the viewing time of each session is unknown beforehand. To overcome these difficulties, we propose an online Bayesian approach to infer the viewing time of each incoming flow with the "least" information from content providers.

Null test of the cosmic curvature using $H(z)$ and supernovae data

We introduce a model-independent approach to the null test of the cosmic curvature which is geometrically related to the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ and luminosity distance $d_L(z)$. Combining the independent observations of $H(z)$ and $d_L(z)$, we use the model-independent smoothing technique, Gaussian processes, to reconstruct them and determine the cosmic curvature $Ω_K^{(0)}$ in the null test relation. The null test is totally geometrical and without assuming any cosmological model. We show that the cosmic curvature $Ω_K^{(0)}=0$ is consistent with current observational data sets, falling within the $1σ$ limit. To demonstrate the effect on the precision of the null test, we produce a series of simulated data of the models with different $Ω_K^{(0)}$. Future observations in better quality can provide a greater improvement to constrain or refute the flat universe with $Ω_K^{(0)}=0$.

Explicit Realization of Hopf Cyclic Cohomology Classes of Bicrossed Product Hopf Algebras

We construct a Hopf action, with an invariant trace, of a bicrossed product Hopf algebra $\cH=\big( \cU(\Fg_1) \acr \cR(G_2) \big)^{\cop}$ constructed from a matched pair of Lie groups $G_1$ and $G_2$, on a convolution algebra $\cA=C_c^{\ify}(G_1)\rtimes G_2^δ$. We give an explicit way to construct Hopf cyclic cohomology classes of our Hopf algebra $\cH$ and then realize these classes in terms of explicit representative cocycles in the cyclic cohomology of the convolution algebra $\cA$.

Drinfel'd twist of multiplier Hopf algebras

This paper generalizes the Drinfel'd twist to the multiplier Hopf algebra case. For a multiplier Hopf algebra $A$ with a twist $J$, we construct a new multiplier Hopf algebra $A^{J}$. Furthermore, if $A$ is quasitriangular, then $A^{J}$ is also. Finally, for a counimodular algebraic quantum group $A$, $A^{J}$ is an algebraic quantum group.

Network Synchronization with Nonlinear Dynamics and Switching Interactions

This paper considers the synchronization problem for networks of coupled nonlinear dynamical systems under switching communication topologies. Two types of nonlinear agent dynamics are considered. The first one is non-expansive dynamics (stable dynamics with a convex Lyapunov function $φ(\cdot)$) and the second one is dynamics that satisfies a global Lipschitz condition. For the non-expansive case, we show that various forms of joint connectivity for communication graphs are sufficient for networks to achieve global asymptotic $φ$-synchronization. We also show that $φ$-synchronization leads to state synchronization provided that certain additional conditions are satisfied. For the globally Lipschitz case, unlike the non-expansive case, joint connectivity alone is not sufficient for achieving synchronization. A sufficient condition for reaching global exponential synchronization is established in terms of the relationship between the global Lipschitz constant and the network parameters. We also extend the results to leader-follower networks.

Efficient Measurement of Multiparticle Entanglement with Embedding Quantum Simulator

We reports direct and scalable measurement of multiparticle entanglement concurrence and three-tangle with embedding photonic quantum simulators. In this embedding framework [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240502 (2013)], $N$-qubit entanglement monotone, which associates with non-Hermitian operators, can be efficiently measured with only 2 (for even $N$) and 6 (for odd $N$) local measurement settings. Our experiment uses a multiphoton quantum simulator to mimic the dynamical entanglement evolution and track its concurrence and three-tangle.

Reconstructing the interaction between dark energy and dark matter using Gaussian Processes

We present a nonparametric approach to reconstruct the interaction between dark energy and dark matter directly from SNIa Union 2.1 data using Gaussian processes, which is a fully Bayesian approach for smoothing data. In this method, once the equation of state ($w$) of dark energy is specified, the interaction can be reconstructed as a function of redshift. For the decaying vacuum energy case with $w=-1$, the reconstructed interaction is consistent with the standard $Λ$CDM model, namely, there is no evidence for the interaction. This also holds for the constant $w$ cases from $-0.9$ to $-1.1$ and for the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parametrization case. If the equation of state deviates obviously from $-1$, the reconstructed interaction exists at $95\%$ confidence level. This shows the degeneracy between the interaction and the equation of state of dark energy when they get constraints from the observational data.

Sampled-Data Consensus over Random Networks

This paper considers the consensus problem for a network of nodes with random interactions and sampled-data control actions. We first show that consensus in expectation, in mean square, and almost surely are equivalent for a general random network model when the inter-sampling interval and network size satisfy a simple relation. The three types of consensus are shown to be simultaneously achieved over an independent or a Markovian random network defined on an underlying graph with a directed spanning tree. For both independent and Markovian random network models, necessary and sufficient conditions for mean-square consensus are derived in terms of the spectral radius of the corresponding state transition matrix. These conditions are then interpreted as the existence of critical value on the inter-sampling interval, below which global mean-square consensus is achieved and above which the system diverges in mean-square sense for some initial states. Finally, we establish an upper bound on the inter-sampling interval below which almost sure consensus is reached, and a lower bound on the inter-sampling interval above which almost sure divergence is reached. Some numerical simulations are given to validate the theoretical results and some discussions on the critical value of the inter-sampling intervals for the mean-square consensus are provided.

Transmutation Theory and Quantization Approach for Quantum Groupoids

Let $H$ and $L$ be quantum groupoids. If $H$ has a quasitriangular structure, then we show that $L$ induces a Hopf algebra $C_{L}(L_s)$ in the category $_{H}\mathcal{M}$, which generalizes the transmutation theory introduced by Majid. Furthermore, if $H$ is commutative, we can construct a Hopf algebra $C_H(H_s)_F$ in the category $_H\mathcal{M}_F$ for a weak invertible unit 2-cocycle $F$, which generalizes the results in \cite{D83}. Finally, we consider the relation between two Hopf algebras: $C_H(H_s)_F$ and $C_{\widetilde H}(\widetilde{H}_s)$, and obtain that they are isomorphic as objects in the category $_{\widetilde H}\mathcal{M}$, where $(\widetilde H, \widetilde{\mathcal{R}})$ is a new quasitriangular quantum groupoid induced by $(H, \mathcal{R})$.

Vortex interactions in the collision of Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the effects of vortex interaction on the formation of interference patterns in a coherent pair of two-dimensional Bose condensed clouds of ultra-cold atoms traveling in opposite directions subject to a harmonic trapping potential. We identify linear and nonlinear regimes in the dipole oscillations of the condensates according to the balance of internal and centre-of-mass energies of the clouds. Simulations of the collision of two clouds each containing a vortex with different winding number (charge) were carried out in these regimes in order to investigate the creation of varying interference patterns. The interaction between different vortex type can be clearly distinguished by those patterns.

Direct observation of the ground state of a 1/3 quantum magnetization plateau in SrMn$_3$P$_4$O$_{14}$ using neutron diffraction measurements

We can directly investigate the ground state in magnetization-plateau fields (plateau ground state) using neutron diffraction measurements. We performed neutron diffraction measurements on the spin-5/2 trimer substance SrMn$_3$P$_4$O$_{14}$ in magnetization-plateau fields. The integrated intensities of magnetic reflections calculated using an expectation value of each spin in a plateau ground state of an isolated-trimer model agree well with those obtained experimentally in the magnetization-plateau fields. We succeeded in direct observation of a plateau ground state in SrMn$_3$P$_4$O$_{14}$.

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Two-Way Relaying: A Space-Division Approach

We propose a novel space-division based network-coding scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relay channels (TWRCs), in which two multi-antenna users exchange information via a multi-antenna relay. In the proposed scheme, the overall signal space at the relay is divided into two subspaces. In one subspace, the spatial streams of the two users have nearly orthogonal directions, and are completely decoded at the relay. In the other subspace, the signal directions of the two users are nearly parallel, and linear functions of the spatial streams are computed at the relay, following the principle of physical-layer network coding (PNC). Based on the recovered messages and message-functions, the relay generates and forwards network-coded messages to the two users. We show that, at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the proposed scheme achieves the asymptotic sum rate capacity of MIMO TWRCs within 1/2log(5/4) = 0.161 bits per user-antenna for any antenna configuration and channel realization. We perform large-system analysis to derive the average sum-rate of the proposed scheme over Rayleigh-fading MIMO TWRCs. We show that the average asymptotic sum rate gap to the capacity upper bound is at most 0.053 bits per relay-antenna. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the existing schemes.

Transport Capacity of Distributed Wireless CSMA Networks

In this paper, we study the transport capacity of large multi-hop wireless CSMA networks. Different from previous studies which rely on the use of centralized scheduling algorithm and/or centralized routing algorithm to achieve the optimal capacity scaling law, we show that the optimal capacity scaling law can be achieved using entirely distributed routing and scheduling algorithms. Specifically, we consider a network with nodes Poissonly distributed with unit intensity on a $\sqrt{n}\times\sqrt{n}$ square $B_{n}\subset\Re^{2}$. Furthermore, each node chooses its destination randomly and independently and transmits following a CSMA protocol. By resorting to the percolation theory and by carefully tuning the three controllable parameters in CSMA protocols, i.e. transmission power, carrier-sensing threshold and count-down timer, we show that a throughput of $Θ\left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}\right)$ is achievable in distributed CSMA networks. Furthermore, we derive the pre-constant preceding the order of the transport capacity by giving an upper and a lower bound of the transport capacity. The tightness of the bounds is validated using simulations.

Probabilistic Data Association-Feedback Particle Filter for Multiple Target Tracking Applications

This paper is concerned with the problem of tracking single or multiple targets with multiple non-target specific observations (measurements). For such filtering problems with data association uncertainty, a novel feedback control-based particle filter algorithm is introduced. The algorithm is referred to as the probabilistic data association-feedback particle filter (PDA-FPF). The proposed filter is shown to represent a generalization to the nonlinear non-Gaussian case of the classical Kalman filter-based probabilistic data association filter (PDAF). One remarkable conclusion is that the proposed PDA-FPF algorithm retains the innovation error-based feedback structure of the classical PDAF algorithm, even in the nonlinear non-Gaussian case. The theoretical results are illustrated with the aid of numerical examples motivated by multiple target tracking applications.

Coordinated Output Regulation of Heterogeneous Linear Systems under Switching Topologies

This paper constructs a framework to describe and study the coordinated output regulation problem for multiple heterogeneous linear systems. Each agent is modeled as a general linear multiple-input multiple-output system with an autonomous exosystem which represents the individual offset from the group reference for the agent. The multi-agent system as a whole has a group exogenous state which represents the tracking reference for the whole group. Under the constraints that the group exogenous output is only locally available to each agent and that the agents have only access to their neighbors' information, we propose observer-based feedback controllers to solve the coordinated output regulation problem using output feedback information. A high-gain approach is used and the information interactions are allowed to be switched over a finite set of fixed networks containing both graphs that have a directed spanning tree and graphs that do not. The fundamental relationship between the information interactions, the dwell time, the non-identical dynamics of different agents, and the high-gain parameters is given. Simulations are shown to validate the theoretical results.

Cooperative Set Aggregation for Multiple Lagrangian Systems

In this paper, we study the cooperative set tracking problem for a group of Lagrangian systems. Each system observes a convex set as its local target. The intersection of these local sets is the group aggregation target. We first propose a control law based on each system's own target sensing and information exchange with neighbors. With necessary connectivity for both cases of fixed and switching communication graphs, multiple Lagrangian systems are shown to achieve rendezvous on the intersection of all the local target sets while the vectors of generalized coordinate derivatives are driven to zero. Then, we introduce the collision avoidance control term into set aggregation control to ensure group dispersion. By defining an ultimate bound on the final generalized coordinate between each system and the intersection of all the local target sets, we show that multiple Lagrangian systems approach a bounded region near the intersection of all the local target sets while the collision avoidance is guaranteed during the movement. In addition, the vectors of generalized coordinate derivatives of all the mechanical systems are shown to be driven to zero. Simulation results are given to validate the theoretical results.

Periodic Behaviors in Constrained Multi-agent Systems

In this paper, we provide two discrete-time multi-agent models which generate periodic behaviors. The first one is a multi-agent system of identical double integrators with input saturation constraints, while the other one is a multi-agent system of identical neutrally stable system with input saturation constraints. In each case, we show that if the feedback gain parameters of the local controller satisfy a certain condition, the multi-agent system exhibits a periodic solution.
