List star edge coloring of generalized Halin graphs

A star $k$-edge coloring is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a star $k$-edge coloring is the star chromatic index of $G$. Deng \etal \cite{MR2933839}, and Bezegov{á} \etal \cite{MR3431294} independently proved that the star chromatic index of a tree is at most $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$, and the bound is sharp. Han \etal \cite{MR3924408} strengthened the result to list version of star chromatic index, and proved that $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$ is also the sharp upper bound for the list star chromatic index of trees. A generalized Halin graph is a plane graph that consists of a plane embedding of a tree $T$ with $Δ(T) \geq 3$, and a cycle $C$ connecting all the leaves of the tree such that $C$ is the boundary of the exterior face. In this paper, we prove that if $H := T \cup C$ is a generalized Halin graph with $|C| \neq 5$, then its list star chromatic index is at most \[ \max\left\{\left\lfloor\frac{θ(T) + Δ(T)}{2}\right\rfloor, 2 \left\lfloor\frac{Δ(T)}{2}\right\rfloor + 7\right\}, \] where $θ(T) = \max_{xy \in E(T)}\{d_{T}(x) + d_{T}(y)\}$. As a consequence, if $H$ is a (generalized) Halin graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 13$, then the list star chromatic index is at most $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$. Moreover, the upper bound for the list star chromatic index is sharp.

Rabi Spectroscopy and Sensitivity of a Floquet Engineered Optical Lattice Clock

We periodically modulate the lattice trapping potential of a $^{87}$Sr optical clock to Floquet engineer the clock transition. In the context of atomic gases in lattices, Floquet engineering has been used to shape the dispersion and topology of Bloch quasi-energy bands. Differently from these previous works manipulating the external (spatial) quasi-energies, we target the internal atomic degrees of freedom. We shape Floquet spin quasi-energies and measure their resonance profiles with Rabi spectroscopy. We provide the spectroscopic sensitivity of each band by measuring the Fisher information and show that this is not depleted by the Floquet dynamical modulation. The demonstration that the internal degrees of freedom can be selectively engineered by manipulating the external degrees of freedom inaugurates a novel device with potential applications in metrology, sensing and quantum simulations.

Adaptive Feature Alignment for Adversarial Training

Recent studies reveal that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are typically vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which pose a threat to security-sensitive applications. Many adversarial defense methods improve robustness at the cost of accuracy, raising the contradiction between standard and adversarial accuracies. In this paper, we observe an interesting phenomenon that feature statistics change monotonically and smoothly w.r.t the rising of attacking strength. Based on this observation, we propose the adaptive feature alignment (AFA) to generate features of arbitrary attacking strengths. Our method is trained to automatically align features of arbitrary attacking strength. This is done by predicting a fusing weight in a dual-BN architecture. Unlike previous works that need to either retrain the model or manually tune a hyper-parameters for different attacking strengths, our method can deal with arbitrary attacking strengths with a single model without introducing any hyper-parameter. Importantly, our method improves the model robustness against adversarial samples without incurring much loss in standard accuracy. Experiments on CIFAR-10, SVHN, and tiny-ImageNet datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art under a wide range of attacking strengths.

Diverse response of surface ozone to COVID-19 lockdown in China

Ozone (O$_{3}$) is a key oxidant and pollutant in the lower atmosphere. Significant increases in surface O$_{3}$ have been reported in many cities during the COVID-19 lockdown. Here we conduct comprehensive observation and modeling analyses of surface O$_{3}$ across China for periods before and during the lockdown. We find that daytime O$_{3}$ decreased in the subtropical south, in contrast to increases in most other regions. Meteorological changes and emission reductions both contributed to the O$_{3}$ changes, with a larger impact from the former especially in central China. The plunge in nitrogen oxide (NO$_{x}$) emission contributed to O$_{3}$ increases in populated regions, whereas the reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOC) contributed to O$_{3}$ decreases across the country. Due to a decreasing level of NO$_{x}$ saturation from north to south, the emission reduction in NO$_{x}$ (46%) and VOC (32%) contributed to net O$_{3}$ increases in north China; the opposite effects of NO$_{x}$ decrease (49%) and VOC decrease (24%) balanced out in central China, whereas the comparable decreases (45-55%) in these two precursors contributed to net O$_{3}$ declines in south China. Our study highlights the complex dependence of O$_{3}$ on its precursors and the importance of meteorology in the short-term O$_{3}$ variability.

More Embeddings, Better Sequence Labelers?

Recent work proposes a family of contextual embeddings that significantly improves the accuracy of sequence labelers over non-contextual embeddings. However, there is no definite conclusion on whether we can build better sequence labelers by combining different kinds of embeddings in various settings. In this paper, we conduct extensive experiments on 3 tasks over 18 datasets and 8 languages to study the accuracy of sequence labeling with various embedding concatenations and make three observations: (1) concatenating more embedding variants leads to better accuracy in rich-resource and cross-domain settings and some conditions of low-resource settings; (2) concatenating additional contextual sub-word embeddings with contextual character embeddings hurts the accuracy in extremely low-resource settings; (3) based on the conclusion of (1), concatenating additional similar contextual embeddings cannot lead to further improvements. We hope these conclusions can help people build stronger sequence labelers in various settings.

Structural Knowledge Distillation: Tractably Distilling Information for Structured Predictor

Knowledge distillation is a critical technique to transfer knowledge between models, typically from a large model (the teacher) to a more fine-grained one (the student). The objective function of knowledge distillation is typically the cross-entropy between the teacher and the student's output distributions. However, for structured prediction problems, the output space is exponential in size; therefore, the cross-entropy objective becomes intractable to compute and optimize directly. In this paper, we derive a factorized form of the knowledge distillation objective for structured prediction, which is tractable for many typical choices of the teacher and student models. In particular, we show the tractability and empirical effectiveness of structural knowledge distillation between sequence labeling and dependency parsing models under four different scenarios: 1) the teacher and student share the same factorization form of the output structure scoring function; 2) the student factorization produces more fine-grained substructures than the teacher factorization; 3) the teacher factorization produces more fine-grained substructures than the student factorization; 4) the factorization forms from the teacher and the student are incompatible.

Deep Learning based Full-reference and No-reference Quality Assessment Models for Compressed UGC Videos

In this paper, we propose a deep learning based video quality assessment (VQA) framework to evaluate the quality of the compressed user's generated content (UGC) videos. The proposed VQA framework consists of three modules, the feature extraction module, the quality regression module, and the quality pooling module. For the feature extraction module, we fuse the features from intermediate layers of the convolutional neural network (CNN) network into final quality-aware feature representation, which enables the model to make full use of visual information from low-level to high-level. Specifically, the structure and texture similarities of feature maps extracted from all intermediate layers are calculated as the feature representation for the full reference (FR) VQA model, and the global mean and standard deviation of the final feature maps fused by intermediate feature maps are calculated as the feature representation for the no reference (NR) VQA model. For the quality regression module, we use the fully connected (FC) layer to regress the quality-aware features into frame-level scores. Finally, a subjectively-inspired temporal pooling strategy is adopted to pool frame-level scores into the video-level score. The proposed model achieves the best performance among the state-of-the-art FR and NR VQA models on the Compressed UGC VQA database and also achieves pretty good performance on the in-the-wild UGC VQA databases.

Grasp stability prediction with time series data based on STFT and LSTM

With an increasing demand for robots, robotic grasping will has a more important role in future applications. This paper takes grasp stability prediction as the key technology for grasping and tries to solve the problem with time series data inputs including the force and pressure data. Widely applied to more fields to predict unstable grasping with time series data, algorithms can significantly promote the application of artificial intelligence in traditional industries. This research investigates models that combine short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and long short-term memory (LSTM) and then tested generalizability with dexterous hand and suction cup gripper. The experiments suggest good results for grasp stability prediction with the force data and the generalized results in the pressure data. Among the 4 models, (Data + STFT) & LSTM delivers the best performance. We plan to perform more work on grasp stability prediction, generalize the findings to different types of sensors, and apply the grasp stability prediction in more grasping use cases in real life.

Automated Concatenation of Embeddings for Structured Prediction

Pretrained contextualized embeddings are powerful word representations for structured prediction tasks. Recent work found that better word representations can be obtained by concatenating different types of embeddings. However, the selection of embeddings to form the best concatenated representation usually varies depending on the task and the collection of candidate embeddings, and the ever-increasing number of embedding types makes it a more difficult problem. In this paper, we propose Automated Concatenation of Embeddings (ACE) to automate the process of finding better concatenations of embeddings for structured prediction tasks, based on a formulation inspired by recent progress on neural architecture search. Specifically, a controller alternately samples a concatenation of embeddings, according to its current belief of the effectiveness of individual embedding types in consideration for a task, and updates the belief based on a reward. We follow strategies in reinforcement learning to optimize the parameters of the controller and compute the reward based on the accuracy of a task model, which is fed with the sampled concatenation as input and trained on a task dataset. Empirical results on 6 tasks and 21 datasets show that our approach outperforms strong baselines and achieves state-of-the-art performance with fine-tuned embeddings in all the evaluations.

The FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot survey: I. Project design and pulsar discoveries

Discovery of pulsars is one of the main goals for large radio telescopes. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), that incorporates an L-band 19-beam receiver with a system temperature of about 20~K, is the most sensitive radio telescope utilized for discovering pulsars. We designed the {\it snapshot} observation mode for a FAST key science project, the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey, in which every four nearby pointings can observe {\it a cover} of a sky patch of 0.1575 square degrees through beam-switching of the L-band 19-beam receiver. The integration time for each pointing is 300 seconds so that the GPPS observations for a cover can be made in 21 minutes. The goal of the GPPS survey is to discover pulsars within the Galactic latitude of $\pm10^{\circ}$ from the Galactic plane, and the highest priority is given to the inner Galaxy within $\pm5^{\circ}$. Up to now, the GPPS survey has discovered 201 pulsars, including currently the faintest pulsars which cannot be detected by other telescopes, pulsars with extremely high dispersion measures (DMs) which challenge the currently widely used models for the Galactic electron density distribution, pulsars coincident with supernova remnants, 40 millisecond pulsars, 16 binary pulsars, some nulling and mode-changing pulsars and rotating radio transients (RRATs). The follow-up observations for confirmation of new pulsars have polarization-signals recorded for polarization profiles of the pulsars. Re-detection of previously known pulsars in the survey data also leads to significant improvements in parameters for 64 pulsars. The GPPS survey discoveries are published and will be updated at http://zmtt.bao.ac.cn/GPPS/ .

Learned Smartphone ISP on Mobile NPUs with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

As the quality of mobile cameras starts to play a crucial role in modern smartphones, more and more attention is now being paid to ISP algorithms used to improve various perceptual aspects of mobile photos. In this Mobile AI challenge, the target was to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based image signal processing (ISP) pipeline that can replace classical hand-crafted ISPs and achieve nearly real-time performance on smartphone NPUs. For this, the participants were provided with a novel learned ISP dataset consisting of RAW-RGB image pairs captured with the Sony IMX586 Quad Bayer mobile sensor and a professional 102-megapixel medium format camera. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ platform with a dedicated AI processing unit capable of accelerating both floating-point and quantized neural networks. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU and are capable of processing Full HD photos under 60-100 milliseconds while achieving high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in this challenge is provided in this paper.

Anisotropic superconductivity in topological crystalline metal Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ with multiple Dirac fermions

Topological crystalline metals/semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated a great research interest, which broaden the classification of topological phases and provide a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor ({\em T}$_c \approx$ 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field ($γ_{H_{c2}}$ = $H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c}$ $\approx$ 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the $k_z = π$ plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation/screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.

Quantum Synchronizable Codes on Sextic Cyclotomy

Quantum synchronizable codes are kinds of quantum error-correcting codes that can not only correct the effects of quantum noise on qubits but also the misalignment in block synchronization. In this paper, the quantum synchronizable codes constructed are CSS quantum error-correcting codes whose synchronization capabilities reach the upper bound. And we use cyclic codes gained by sextic cyclotomic classes to construct two classes of quantum synchronizable codes. Moreover, the quantum synchronizable codes are posses good error-correcting capability towards bit error and phase error, since the cyclic codes we used are optimal or almost optimal.

Integrating van der Waals materials on paper substrates for electrical and optical applications

Paper holds the promise to replace silicon substrates in applications like internet of things or disposable electronics that require ultra-low-cost electronic components and an environmentally friendly electronic waste management. In the last years, spurred by the abovementioned properties of paper as a substrate and the exceptional electronic, mechanical and optical properties of van der Waals (vdW) materials, many research groups have worked towards the integration of vdW materials-based devices on paper. Recently, a method to deposit a continuous film of densely packed interconnects of vdW materials on paper by simply rubbing the vdW crystals against the rough surface of paper has been presented. This method utilizes the weak interlayer vdW interactions and allows cleaving of the crystals into micro platelets through the abrasion against the paper. Here, we aim to illustrate the general character and the potential of this technique by fabricating films of 39 different vdW materials (including superconductors, semi-metals, semiconductors, and insulators) on standard copier paper. We have thoroughly characterized their optical properties showing their high optical quality: one can easily resolve the absorption band edge of semiconducting vdW materials and even the excitonic features present in some vdW materials with high exciton binding energy. We also measured the electrical resistivity for several vdW materials films on paper finding exceptionally low values, which are in some cases, orders of magnitude lower than those reported for analogous films produced by inkjet printing. We finally demonstrate the fabrication of field-effect devices with vdW materials on paper using the paper substrate as an ionic gate.

Optical microscopy-based thickness estimation in thin GaSe flakes

We have implemented three different optical methods to quantitatively assess the thickness of thin GaSe flakes transferred on both transparent substrates, like Gel-Film, or SiO2/Si substrates. We show how their apparent color can be an efficient way to make a quick rough estimation of the thickness of the flakes. This method is more effective for SiO2/Si substrates as the thickness dependent color change is more pronounced on these substrates than on transparent substrates. On the other hand, for transparent substrates, the transmittance of the flakes in the blue region of the visible spectrum can be used to estimate the thickness. We find that the transmittance of flakes in the blue part of the spectrum decreases at a rate of 1.2%/nm. On SiO2/Si, the thickness of the flakes can be accurately determined by fitting optical contrast spectra to a Fresnel law-based model. Finally, we also show how the quantitative analysis of transmission mode optical microscopy images can be a powerful method to quickly probe the environmental degradation of GaSe flakes exposed to aging conditions.

Autocorrect in the Process of Translation -- Multi-task Learning Improves Dialogue Machine Translation

Automatic translation of dialogue texts is a much needed demand in many real life scenarios. However, the currently existing neural machine translation delivers unsatisfying results. In this paper, we conduct a deep analysis of a dialogue corpus and summarize three major issues on dialogue translation, including pronoun dropping (\droppro), punctuation dropping (\droppun), and typos (\typo). In response to these challenges, we propose a joint learning method to identify omission and typo, and utilize context to translate dialogue utterances. To properly evaluate the performance, we propose a manually annotated dataset with 1,931 Chinese-English parallel utterances from 300 dialogues as a benchmark testbed for dialogue translation. Our experiments show that the proposed method improves translation quality by 3.2 BLEU over the baselines. It also elevates the recovery rate of omitted pronouns from 26.09% to 47.16%. We will publish the code and dataset publicly at https://github.com/rgwt123/DialogueMT.

Bipolar conduction and giant positive magnetoresistance in doped metallic titanium oxide heterostructures

Empowering conventional materials with unexpected magnetoelectric properties is appealing to the multi-functionalization of existing devices and the exploration of future electronics. Recently, owing to its unique effect in modulating a matter's properties, ultra-small dopants, e.g. H, D, and Li, attract enormous attention in creating emergent functionalities, such as superconductivity, and metal-insulator transition. Here, we report an observation of bipolar conduction accompanied by a giant positive magnetoresistance in D-doped metallic Ti oxide (TiOxDy) films. To overcome the challenges in intercalating the D into a crystalline oxide, a series of TiOxDy were formed by sequentially doping Ti with D and surface/interface oxidation. Intriguingly, while the electron mobility of the TiOxDy increases by an order of magnitude larger after doping, the emergent holes also exhibit high mobility. Moreover, the bipolar conduction induces a giant magnetoresistance up to 900% at 6 T, which is ~6 times higher than its conventional phase. Our study paves a way to empower conventional materials in existing electronics and induce novel electronic phases.
