A class of quantum synchronizable codes of length $2^n$ over ${\rm F}_q$

Quantum synchronizable codes (QSCs) are special quantum error-correcting codes which can be used to correct the effects of quantum noise on qubits and misalignment in block synchronization. In this paper, a new class of quantum synchronizable codes of length $2^n$ are constructed by using the cyclotomic cosets, whose synchronization capabilities always reach the upper bound $2^n$.

The time-domain Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana interference in optical lattice clock

The interference between a sequence of Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions can produce Rabi oscillations(LZROs). This phenomenon is a kind of time-domain Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference. However, experimental demonstrations of this LZSM interference induced Rabi oscillation are extremely hard due to the short coherence time of the driven quantum system. Here, we study theoretically the time-domain LZSM interference between the clock transition in one-dimensional (1D) Sr-87 optical lattice clock (OLC) system. With the help of both the adiabatic-impulse model and Floquet numerical simulation method, the LZROs with special step-like structure are clearly found both in fast- and slow-passage limit in the real experiment parameter regions. In addition, the dephasing effect caused by the system temperature can be suppressed with destructive interference in the slow-passage limit. Finally, we discuss the possible Bloch-Siegert shift while the pulse time is away from the half-integer and integer periods. Our work provides a clear roadmap to observe the LZROs on the OLC platform.

CMTR: Cross-modality Transformer for Visible-infrared Person Re-identification

Visible-infrared cross-modality person re-identification is a challenging ReID task, which aims to retrieve and match the same identity's images between the heterogeneous visible and infrared modalities. Thus, the core of this task is to bridge the huge gap between these two modalities. The existing convolutional neural network-based methods mainly face the problem of insufficient perception of modalities' information, and can not learn good discriminative modality-invariant embeddings for identities, which limits their performance. To solve these problems, we propose a cross-modality transformer-based method (CMTR) for the visible-infrared person re-identification task, which can explicitly mine the information of each modality and generate better discriminative features based on it. Specifically, to capture modalities' characteristics, we design the novel modality embeddings, which are fused with token embeddings to encode modalities' information. Furthermore, to enhance representation of modality embeddings and adjust matching embeddings' distribution, we propose a modality-aware enhancement loss based on the learned modalities' information, reducing intra-class distance and enlarging inter-class distance. To our knowledge, this is the first work of applying transformer network to the cross-modality re-identification task. We implement extensive experiments on the public SYSU-MM01 and RegDB datasets, and our proposed CMTR model's performance significantly surpasses existing outstanding CNN-based methods.

MuVER: Improving First-Stage Entity Retrieval with Multi-View Entity Representations

Entity retrieval, which aims at disambiguating mentions to canonical entities from massive KBs, is essential for many tasks in natural language processing. Recent progress in entity retrieval shows that the dual-encoder structure is a powerful and efficient framework to nominate candidates if entities are only identified by descriptions. However, they ignore the property that meanings of entity mentions diverge in different contexts and are related to various portions of descriptions, which are treated equally in previous works. In this work, we propose Multi-View Entity Representations (MuVER), a novel approach for entity retrieval that constructs multi-view representations for entity descriptions and approximates the optimal view for mentions via a heuristic searching method. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on ZESHEL and improves the quality of candidates on three standard Entity Linking datasets

Ergodic convergence rates for time-changed symmetric Lévy processes in dimension one

We obtain the lower bounds for ergodic convergence rates, including spectral gaps and convergence rates in strong ergodicity for time-changed symmetric Lévy processes by using harmonic function and reversible measure. As direct applications, explicit sufficient conditions for exponential and strong ergodicity are given. Some examples are also presented.

Thermoelectric properties of Bi2O2Se single crystals

Bismuth oxyselenide (Bi$_2$O$_2$Se) attracts great interest as a potential n-type complement to p-type thermoelectric oxides in practical applications. Previous investigations were generally focused on polycrystals. Here, we performed a study on the thermoelectric properties of Bi$_2$O$_2$Se single crystals. Our samples exhibit electron mobility as high as 250 cm$^2.$V$^{-1}$.s$^{-1}$ and thermal conductivity as low as $2$ W.m$^{-1}$.K$^{-1}$ near room temperature. The maximized figure of merit is yielded to be 0.188 at 390 K, higher than that of polycrystals. Consequently, a rough estimation of the phonon mean free path ($\ell_\textrm{ph}$) from the kinetic model amounts to 12 $Å$ at 390 K and follows a $T^{-1}$ behavior. An extrapolation of $\ell_\textrm{ph}$ to higher temperatures indicates that this system approaches the Ioffe-Regel limit at about 1100 K. In light of the phonon dispersions, we argue that the ultralow $\ell_\textrm{ph}$ is attributed to intense anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering, including Umklapp process and acoustic to optical phonon scattering. Our results suggest that single crystals provide a further improvement of thermoelectric performance of Bi$_2$O$_2$Se.

Magnetic Interactions Between Radical Pairs in Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons

Magnetic graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have become promising candidates for future applications, including quantum technologies. Here, we characterize magnetic states hosted by chiral graphene nanoribbons (chGNRs). The substitution of a hydrogen atom at the chGNR edge by a ketone group effectively adds one p_z electron to the π-electron network, thus producing an unpaired π radical. A closely related scenario occurs for regular ketone-functionalized chGNRs in which one oxygen atom is missing. Two such radical states can interact via exchange coupling and we study those interactions as a function of their relative position, which includes a remarkable dependence on the chirality, as well as on the nature of the surrounding GNR, i.e., with or without ketone functionalization. In addition, we determine the parameters whereby this type of systems with oxygen heteroatoms can be adequately described within the widely used mean-field Hubbard model. Altogether, we provide new insights to both theoretically model and devise GNR-based nanostructures with tunable magnetic properties.

Secoco: Self-Correcting Encoding for Neural Machine Translation

This paper presents Self-correcting Encoding (Secoco), a framework that effectively deals with input noise for robust neural machine translation by introducing self-correcting predictors. Different from previous robust approaches, Secoco enables NMT to explicitly correct noisy inputs and delete specific errors simultaneously with the translation decoding process. Secoco is able to achieve significant improvements over strong baselines on two real-world test sets and a benchmark WMT dataset with good interpretability. We will make our code and dataset publicly available soon.

Learning Class-level Prototypes for Few-shot Learning

Few-shot learning aims to recognize new categories using very few labeled samples. Although few-shot learning has witnessed promising development in recent years, most existing methods adopt an average operation to calculate prototypes, thus limited by the outlier samples. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective framework for few-shot classification, which can learn to generate preferable prototypes from few support data, with the help of an episodic prototype generator module. The generated prototype is meant to be close to a certain \textit{\targetproto{}} and is less influenced by outlier samples. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of this module, and our approach gets a significant raise over baseline models, and get a competitive result compared to previous methods on \textit{mini}ImageNet, \textit{tiered}ImageNet, and cross-domain (\textit{mini}ImageNet $\rightarrow$ CUB-200-2011) datasets.

Pull Request Latency Explained: An Empirical Overview

Pull request latency evaluation is an essential application of effort evaluation in the pull-based development scenario. It can help the reviewers sort the pull request queue, remind developers about the review processing time, speed up the review process and accelerate software development. There is a lack of work that systematically organizes the factors that affect pull request latency. Also, there is no related work discussing the differences and variations in characteristics in different scenarios and contexts. In this paper, we collected relevant factors through a literature review approach. Then we assessed their relative importance in five scenarios and six different contexts using the mixed-effects linear regression model. We find that the relative importance of factors differs in different scenarios, e.g., the first response time of the reviewer is most important when there exist comments. Meanwhile, the number of commits in a pull request has a more significant impact on pull request latency when closing than submitting due to changes in contributions brought about by the review process.

Real-time Image Enhancer via Learnable Spatial-aware 3D Lookup Tables

Recently, deep learning-based image enhancement algorithms achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on several publicly available datasets. However, most existing methods fail to meet practical requirements either for visual perception or for computation efficiency, especially for high-resolution images. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time image enhancer via learnable spatial-aware 3-dimentional lookup tables(3D LUTs), which well considers global scenario and local spatial information. Specifically, we introduce a light weight two-head weight predictor that has two outputs. One is a 1D weight vector used for image-level scenario adaptation, the other is a 3D weight map aimed for pixel-wise category fusion. We learn the spatial-aware 3D LUTs and fuse them according to the aforementioned weights in an end-to-end manner. The fused LUT is then used to transform the source image into the target tone in an efficient way. Extensive results show that our model outperforms SOTA image enhancement methods on public datasets both subjectively and objectively, and that our model only takes about 4ms to process a 4K resolution image on one NVIDIA V100 GPU.

DP-4-coloring of planar graphs with some restrictions on cycles

DP-coloring was introduced by Dvořák and Postle as a generalization of list coloring. It was originally used to solve a longstanding conjecture by Borodin, stating that every planar graph without cycles of lengths 4 to 8 is 3-choosable. In this paper, we give three sufficient conditions for a planar graph to be DP-4-colorable. Actually all the results (Theorem 1.3, 1.4 and 1.7) are stated in the ``color extendability'' form, and uniformly proved by vertex identification and discharging method.

Circumventing the Stability Problems of Graphene Nanoribbon Zigzag Edges

Carbon nanostructures with zigzag edges exhibit unique properties with exciting potential applications. Such nanostructures are generally synthesized under vacuum because their zigzag edges are unstable under ambient conditions: a barrier that must be surmounted to achieve their scalable exploitation. Here, we prove the viability of chemical protection/deprotection strategies for this aim, demonstrated on labile chiral graphene nanoribbons (chGNRs). Upon hydrogenation, the chGNRs survive an exposure to air, after which they are easily converted back to their original structure via annealing. We also approach the problem from another angle by synthesizing a chemically stable oxidized form of the chGNRs that can be converted to the pristine hydrocarbon form via hydrogenation and annealing. These findings may represent an important step toward the integration of zigzag-edged nanostructures in devices.

Doubly Modulated Optical Lattice Clock Interference and Topology

The quantum system under periodical modulation is the simplest path to understand the quantum non-equilibrium system, because it can be well described by the effective static Floquet Hamiltonian. Under the stroboscopic measurement, the initial phase is usually irrelevant. However, if two uncorrelated parameters are modulated, their relative phase can not be gauged out, so that the physics can be dramatically changed. Here, we simultaneously modulate the frequency of the lattice laser and the Rabi frequency in an optical lattice clock (OLC) system. Thanks to ultra-high precision and ultra-stability of OLC, the relative phase could be fine-tuned. As a smoking gun, we observed the interference between two Floquet channels. Finally, by experimentally detecting the eigen-energies, we demonstrate the relation between effective Floquet Hamiltonian and 1-D topological insulator with high winding number. Our experiment not only provides a direction for detecting the phase effect, but also paves a way in simulating quantum topological phase in OLC platform.

Quantum Synchronizable Codes From Cyclotomic Classes of Order Two over $\mathbb{Z}_{2q}$

Quantum synchronizable codes are kinds of quantum error-correcting codes that can not only correct the effects of quantum noise on qubits but also the misalignment in block synchronization. This paper contributes to constructing two classes of quantum synchronizable codes by the cyclotomic classes of order two over $\mathbb{Z}_{2q}$, whose synchronization capabilities can reach the upper bound under certain conditions. Moreover, the quantum synchronizable codes possess good error-correcting capability towards bit errors and phase errors.

Nonlinear reversed shear Alfven eigenmode saturation due to spontaneous zonal current generation

General nonlinear equations describing reversed shear Alfven eigenmode (RSAE) self-modulation via zero frequency zonal structure (ZFZS) generation are derived using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory, which are then applied to study the spontaneous ZFZS excitation as well as RSAE nonlinear saturation. It is found that both electrostatic zonal flow (ZF) and electromagnetic zonal current (ZC) can be preferentially excited by finite amplitude RSAE, depending on specific plasma parameters. The modification to local shear Alfven wave continuum is evaluated using the derived saturation level of ZC, which is shown to play a comparable role in saturating RSAE with the ZFZS scattering.

The Volctrans Neural Speech Translation System for IWSLT 2021

This paper describes the systems submitted to IWSLT 2021 by the Volctrans team. We participate in the offline speech translation and text-to-text simultaneous translation tracks. For offline speech translation, our best end-to-end model achieves 8.1 BLEU improvements over the benchmark on the MuST-C test set and is even approaching the results of a strong cascade solution. For text-to-text simultaneous translation, we explore the best practice to optimize the wait-k model. As a result, our final submitted systems exceed the benchmark at around 7 BLEU on the same latency regime. We will publish our code and model to facilitate both future research works and industrial applications. This paper describes the systems submitted to IWSLT 2021 by the Volctrans team.
