Timing analysis of Swift J1658.2-4242's outburst in 2018 with Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat

We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate Swift J1658.2-4242 during its 2018 outburst with the observations of Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and AstroSat in 0.1-250keV. The evolution of intensity, hardness and integrated fractional root mean square (rms) observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER are presented in this paper. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (0.8-3.5Hz) and Insight-HXMT (1-1.6Hz) are also reported in this work. The features of the QPOs are analysed with an energy range of 0.5-50keV. The relations between QPO frequency and other characteristics such as intensity, hardness and QPO rms are carefully studied. The timing and spectral properties indicate that Swift J1658.2-4242 is a black hole binary system. Besides, the rms spectra of the source calculated from the simultaneous observation of Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat support the Lense-Thirring origin of the QPOs. The relation between QPO phase lag and the centroid frequency of Swift J1658.2-4242 reveals a near zero constant when < 4Hz and a soft phase lag at 6.68 Hz. This independence follows the same trend as the high inclination galactic black hole binaries such as MAXI J1659-152.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

The Medium Energy (ME) X-ray telescope onboard the Insight-HXMT astronomy satellite

The Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) is one of the three main telescopes on board the Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) astronomy satellite. ME contains 1728 pixels of Si-PIN detectors sensitive in 5-30 keV with a total geometrical area of 952 cm2. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips, VA32TA6, is used to achieve low power consumption and low readout noise. The collimators define three kinds of field of views (FOVs) for the telescope, 1°{\times}4°, 4°{\times}4°, and blocked ones. Combination of such FOVs can be used to estimate the in-orbit X-ray and particle background components. The energy resolution of ME is ~3 keV at 17.8 keV (FWHM) and the time resolution is 255 μs. In this paper, we introduce the design and performance of ME.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

A Preliminary Study on Data Augmentation of Deep Learning for Image Classification

Deep learning models have a large number of freeparameters that need to be calculated by effective trainingof the models on a great deal of training data to improvetheir generalization performance. However, data obtaining andlabeling is expensive in practice. Data augmentation is one of themethods to alleviate this problem. In this paper, we conduct apreliminary study on how three variables (augmentation method, augmentation rate and size of basic dataset per label) can affectthe accuracy of deep learning for image classification. The studyprovides some guidelines: (1) it is better to use transformationsthat alter the geometry of the images rather than those justlighting and color. (2) 2-3 times augmentation rate is good enoughfor training. (3) the smaller amount of data, the more obviouscontributions could have.

Heterogeneous Memory Enhanced Multimodal Attention Model for Video Question Answering

In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end trainable Video Question Answering (VideoQA) framework with three major components: 1) a new heterogeneous memory which can effectively learn global context information from appearance and motion features; 2) a redesigned question memory which helps understand the complex semantics of question and highlights queried subjects; and 3) a new multimodal fusion layer which performs multi-step reasoning by attending to relevant visual and textual hints with self-updated attention. Our VideoQA model firstly generates the global context-aware visual and textual features respectively by interacting current inputs with memory contents. After that, it makes the attentional fusion of the multimodal visual and textual representations to infer the correct answer. Multiple cycles of reasoning can be made to iteratively refine attention weights of the multimodal data and improve the final representation of the QA pair. Experimental results demonstrate our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on four VideoQA benchmark datasets.

Wall effects of eccentric spheres machine learning for convenient computation

In confined systems, such as the inside of a biological cell, the outer boundary or wall can affect the dynamics of internal particles. In many cases of interest both the internal particle and outer wall are approximately spherical. Therefore, quantifying the wall effects from an outer spherical boundary on the motion of an internal eccentric sphere is very useful. However, when the two spheres are not concentric, the problem becomes non-trivial. In this paper we improve existing analytical methods to evaluate these wall effects and then train a feed-forward artificial neural network within a broader model. The final model generally performed with $\sim 0.001\%$ error within the training domain and $\sim 0.05\%$ when the outer spherical wall was extrapolated to an infinite plane. Through this model, the wall effects of an outer spherical boundary on the arbitrary motion of an internal sphere for all experimentally achievable configurations can now be conveniently and efficiently determined.

Super-Eddington accretion onto the Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124

We report on the spectral behavior of the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with NuSTAR observations during its 2017-2018 outburst. At sub-Eddington levels, the source spectrum is characterized by three emission components, respectively from the accretion column, the hot spot, and a broad iron line emission region. When the source is above the Eddington limit, the hot spot temperature increases and the spectrum features two more blackbody components. One blackbody component has a radius of 10-20 km and is likely originated from the top of the accretion column. The other one saturates at a blackbody luminosity of (1 - 2)*10^38 erg/s, coincident with the Eddington limit of a neutron star. This is well consistent with the scenario that super-Eddington accretion onto compact objects will power optically-thick outflows and indicates an accretion rate 60-80 times the critical value. This suggests that super-Eddington accretion onto magnetized systems can also power massive winds. At super-Eddington levels, the iron line becomes more significant and blueshifted, and is argued to be associated with the ultrafast wind in the central funnel or jets. This source, if located in external galaxies, will appear like other ultraluminous pulsars.

Long-term evolutions of the cyclotron line energies in Her X-1, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3 as observed with Swift/BAT

We study the long-term evolution of the centroid energy of cyclotron lines - often referered to as Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Features (CRSF) - in Her X-1, Vela X-1 and Cen X-3, using survey observations of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) onboard Swift. We find a significant decrease of the fundamental CRSF energy in Her X-1 and the first harmonic line energy in Vela X-1, since the launch of Swift in 2004 and until 2010 and 2012, respectively. In both sources the decreases stopped at some time, with a quite stable centroid energy thereafter. Unlike in Her X-1 and Vela X-1, the CRSF energy in Cen X-3 does not show a long-term decrease. It is observed not to change for at least the past 14 years. The long-term variation of the line energy is a direct way to investigate the magnetic field structure in the polar regions of pulsars. Our results may stimulate the development of theoretical models, especially regarding to how the accreted mass accumulates in the accretion mound or how the magnetic field distorts around the polar cap.

Keratoconus Recognition Using A Parameter Set Determined from IOP-Matched Scenario

PURPOSE: Among the current practices for keratoconus recognition using biomechanical parameters from Corvis ST, matching intra-ocular pressure (IOP) is often required to eliminate the biasing influence; as a result, the combined biomechanical parameters determined from IOP-unmatched scenario possibly bring in confounding influence. This paper was therefore designed to introduce a novel compatible parameter set (CPS) determined from IOP-matched scenario, hopefully could show its compatibility and superiority for recognizing keratoconus in both IOP-matched and not scenarios. METHODS: A total of 335 eyes were included. Among them, 70 eyes were used to determined CPS by forward logistics regression, 62 eyes were used to validate CPS in IOP-matched scenario, and resting 203 eyes were used to validate CPS in IOP-unmatched scenario. To analyze its superiority, CPS was also compared with other two reported Biomechanical Indexes (aCBI and DCR) in both scenarios. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), accuracy, FI, sensitivity and specificity were used to access and compare the performance of these three parameter sets in both scenarios. RESULTS: The resulting CPS was comprised of only 3 biomechanical parameters: DA Ratio Max 1mm (DRM1), the first applanation time (AT1) and an energy loading parameter (Eload). In the IOP-matched validation, the area under ROC (AUC) reached 95.73%, with an accuracy of 95.2%, sensitivity of 93.5% and specificity of 96.8% (leave one out cross-validation). All these indicators reached 96.54%, 95.1%, 95.6% and 94.6% respectively, in the IOP-unmatched validation (leave one out cross-validation). Surprisingly, CPS performed better than other two parameter sets on a whole. CONCLUSIONS: The parameter set determined from IOP-matched scenario indeed exhibit its superiority for differentiation of keratoconus and normal corneas, regardless of IOP-matched or not.

A method of detector and event visualization with Unity in JUNO

A visualization method based on Unity engine is proposed for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment. The method has been applied in development of a new event display tool named ELAINA (Event Live Animation with unIty for Neutrino Analysis), which provides an intuitive way for users to observe the detector geometry, to tune the reconstruction algorithm and to analyze the physics events. In comparison with the traditional ROOT-based event display, ELAINA provides better visual effects with the Unity engine. It is developed independently of the JUNO offline software but shares the same detector description and event data model in JUNO offline with interfaces. Users can easily download and run the event display on their local computers with different operation systems.

Dense matter with eXTP

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.

Accretion in Strong Field Gravity with eXTP

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process.

The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The paper provides a detailed description of: (1) the technological and technical aspects, and the expected performance of the instruments of the scientific payload; (2) the elements and functions of the mission, from the spacecraft to the ground segment.

The GeV emission of PSR B1259-63 during its last three periastron passages observed by Fermi-LAT

PSR B1259-63 is a $γ$-ray emitting high mass X-ray binary system, in which the compact object is a millisecond pulsar. The system has an orbital period of 1236.7 d and shows peculiar $γ$-ray flares when the neutron star moves out of the stellar disk of the companion star. The $γ$-ray flare events were firstly discovered by using Fermi-LAT around the 2010 periastron passage, which was repeated for the 2014 and 2017 periastron passages. We analyze the Fermi-LAT data for all the three periastron passages and found that in each flare the energy spectrum can be represented well by a simple power law. The $γ$-ray light curves show that in 2010 and 2014 after each periastron there are two main flares, but in 2017 there are four flares including one precursor about 10 d after the periastron passage. The first main flares in 2010 and 2014 are located at around 35 d after the periastron passage, and the main flare in 2014 is delayed by roughly 1.7 d with respect to that in 2010. In the 2017 flare, the source shows a precursor about 10 d after the periastron passage, but the following two flares become weaker and lag behind those in 2010 by roughly 5 d. The strongest flares in 2017 occurred 58 d and 70 d after the periastron passage. These results challenge the previous models.

Dynamical structure factor of the three-dimensional quantum spin liquid candidate NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$

We study the spin-1 pyrochlore material NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$ with a combination of molecular dynamics simulations, stochastic dynamical theory and linear spin wave theory. The dynamical structure factor from inelastic neutron scattering is well described with a near-ideal Heisenberg Hamiltonian incorporating small anisotropic terms {and weak second-neighbor interactions}. We find that all three approaches reproduce remarkably well the momentum dependence of the scattering intensity as well as its energy dependence with the exception of the lowest energies. These results are notable in that (i) the data show a complete lack of sharp quasiparticle excitations in momentum space over much, if not all, of the energy range; (ii) linear spin-wave theory appears to apply in a regime where it would be expected to fail for a number of reasons. We elucidate what underpins these surprises, and note that basic questions about the nature of quantum spin liquidity in such systems pose themselves as a result.
