Microscopic theory for interface fluctuations in binary liquid mixtures

Thermally excited capillary waves at fluid interfaces in binary liquid mixtures exhibit simultaneously both density and composition fluctuations. Based on a density functional theory for inhomogeneous binary liquid mixtures we derive an effective wavelength dependent Hamiltonian for fluid interfaces in these systems beyond the standard capillary-wave model. Explicit expressions are obtained for the surface tension, the bending rigidities, and the coupling constants of compositional capillary waves in terms of the profiles of the two number densities characterizing the mixture. These results lead to predictions for grazing-incidence x-ray scattering experiments at such interfaces.

Complete Wetting of Nanosculptured Substrates

Complete wetting of geometrically structured substrates by one-component fluids with long-ranged interactions is studied. We consider periodic arrays of rectangular or parabolic grooves and lattices of cylindrical or parabolic pits. We show that the midpoint interfacial heights within grooves and pits are related in the same way as for complete wedge and cone filling. For sufficiently deep cavities with vertical walls and small undersaturation, an effective planar scaling regime emerges. The scaling exponent is -1/3 in all cases studied, and only the amplitudes depend on the geometrical features. We find quantitative agreement with recent experimental data for such systems.

Relation between the thermodynamic Casimir effect in Bose-gas slabs and critical Casimir forces

In a recent letter, Martin and Zagrebnov [Europhys. Lett., 73 (2006) 1] discussed the thermodynamic Casimir effect for the ideal Bose gas confined in a thin film. We point out that their findings can be expressed in terms of previous general results for the Casimir effect induced by confined critical fluctuations. This highlights the links between the Casimir effect in the contexts of critical phenomena and Bose-Einstein condensation.

Forces between chemically structured substrates mediated by critical fluids

We consider binary liquid mixtures close to their critical points confined by two parallel, geometrically flat but chemically structured, substrates. Universal order parameters profiles are calculated within mean field theory for periodic patterns of stripes with alternating preferences for the two species of the mixture and with different relative positions of the two substrates. From the order parameters profiles the effective forces between the two plates are derived. The tuning of Casimir amplitudes is discussed.

Lateral and normal forces between patterned substrates induced by nematic fluctuations

We consider a nematic liquid crystal confined by two parallel flat substrates whose anchoring conditions vary periodically in one lateral direction. Within the Gaussian approximation, we study the effective forces between the patterned substrates induced by the thermal fluctuations of the nematic director. The shear force oscillates as function of the lateral shift between the patterns on the lower and the upper substrates. We compare the strength of this fluctuation-induced lateral force with the lateral van der Waals force arising from chemically structured adsorbed monolayers. The fluctuation-induced force in normal direction is either repulsive or attractive, depending on the model parameters.

Pearling instability of nanoscale fluid flow confined to a chemical channel

We investigate the flow of a nano-scale incompressible ridge of low-volatility liquid along a "chemical channel": a long, straight, and completely wetting stripe embedded in a planar substrate, and sandwiched between two extended less wetting solid regions. Molecular dynamics simulations, a simple long-wavelength approximation, and a full stability analysis based on the Stokes equations are used, and give qualitatively consistent results. While thin liquid ridges are stable both statically and during flow, a (linear) pearling instability develops if the thickness of the ridge exceeds half of the width of the channel. In the flowing case periodic bulges propagate along the channel and subsequently merge due to nonlinear effects. However, the ridge does not break up even when the flow is unstable, and the qualitative behavior is unchanged even when the fluid can spill over onto a partially wetting exterior solid region.

Critical dynamics in thin films

Critical dynamics in film geometry is analyzed within the field-theoretical approach. In particular we consider the case of purely relaxational dynamics (Model A) and Dirichlet boundary conditions, corresponding to the so-called ordinary surface universality class on both confining boundaries. The general scaling properties for the linear response and correlation functions and for dynamic Casimir forces are discussed. Within the Gaussian approximation we determine the analytic expressions for the associated universal scaling functions and study quantitatively in detail their qualitative features as well as their various limiting behaviors close to the bulk critical point. In addition we consider the effects of time-dependent fields on the fluctuation-induced dynamic Casimir force and determine analytically the corresponding universal scaling functions and their asymptotic behaviors for two specific instances of instantaneous perturbations. The universal aspects of nonlinear relaxation from an initially ordered state are also discussed emphasizing the different crossovers that occur during this evolution. The model considered is relevant to the critical dynamics of actual uniaxial ferromagnetic films with symmetry-preserving conditions at the confining surfaces and for Monte Carlo simulations of spin system with Glauber dynamics and free boundary conditions.

Attractions between charged colloids at water interfaces

The effective potential between charged colloids trapped at water interfaces is analyzed. It consists of a repulsive electrostatic and an attractive capillary part which asymptotically both show dipole--like behavior. For sufficiently large colloid charges, the capillary attraction dominates at large separations. The total effective potential exhibits a minimum at intermediate separations if the Debye screening length of water and the colloid radius are of comparable size.

Diffusive spreading and mixing of fluid monolayers

The use of ultra-thin, i.e., monolayer films plays an important role for the emerging field of nano-fluidics. Since the dynamics of such films is governed by the interplay between substrate-fluid and fluid-fluid interactions, the transport of matter in nanoscale devices may be eventually efficiently controlled by substrate engineering. For such films, the dynamics is expected to be captured by two-dimensional lattice-gas models with interacting particles. Using a lattice gas model and the non-linear diffusion equation derived from the microscopic dynamics in the continuum limit, we study two problems of relevance in the context of nano-fluidics. The first one is the case in which along the spreading direction of a monolayer a mesoscopic-sized obstacle is present, with a particular focus on the relaxation of the fluid density profile upon encountering and passing the obstacle. The second one is the mixing of two monolayers of different particle species which spread side by side following the merger of two chemical lanes, here defined as domains of high affinity for fluid adsorption surrounded by domains of low affinity for fluid adsorption.

Critical Casimir Effect in 3He-4He films

Universal aspects of the thermodynamic Casimir effect in wetting films of 3He-4He mixtures near their bulk tricritical point are studied within suitable models serving as representatives of the corresponding universality class. The effective forces between the boundaries of such films arising from the confinement are calculated along isotherms at several fixed concentrations of 3He. Nonsymmetric boundary conditions impose nontrivial concentration profiles leading to repulsive Casimir forces which exhibit a rich behavior of the crossover between the tricritical point and the line of critical points. The theoretical results agree with published experimental data and emphasize the importance of logarithmic corrections.

Free Isotropic-Nematic Interfaces in Fluids of Charged Platelike Colloids

Bulk properties and free interfaces of mixtures of charged platelike colloids and salt are studied within density-functional theory. The particles are modeled by hard cuboids with their edges constrained to be parallel to the artesian axes corresponding to the Zwanzig model. The charges of the particles are concentrated in their center. The density functional is derived by functional integration of an extension of the Debye-Hückel pair distribution function with respect to the interaction potential. For sufficiently small macroion charges, the bulk phase diagrams exhibit one isotropic and one nematic phase separated by a first-order phase transition. With increasing platelet charge, the isotropic and nematic binodals are shifted to higher densities. The Donnan potential between the coexisting isotropic and nematic phases is inferred from bulk structure calculations. Non-monotonic density and nematic order parameter profiles are found at a free interface interpolating between the coexisting isotropic and nematic bulk phases. Moreover, electrically charged layers form at the free interface leading to monotonically varying electrostatic potential profiles. Both the widths of the free interfaces and the bulk correlation lengths are approximately given by the Debye length. For fixed salt density, the interfacial tension decreases upon increasing the macroion charge.

Global phase diagrams of binary dipolar fluid mixtures

We apply a modified mean-field density functional theory to determine the phase behavior of binary mixtures of Stockmayer fluids whose spherical constituents interact according to Lennard-Jones (LJ) pair potentials with embedded pointlike dipole moments. On the basis of systematic numerical calculations we construct the global phase diagrams of these systems in the three-dimensional thermodynamic space of temperature, pressure, and chemical potential difference of the two components. The vapor-liquid, isotropic liquid - isotropic liquid, isotropic liquid - ferromagnetic liquid, and ferromagnetic liquid - ferromagnetic liquid first-order phase separations are investigated. The loci of the second-order isotropic fluid - ferromagnetic fluid transition are calculated from Landau theory. Liquid-vapor and liquid-liquid critical lines, tricritical lines, triple lines, and lines of critical end points of the binary Stockmayer mixtures are also determined. We discuss how the topology of the phase diagrams change upon varying the strengths of the two dipole moments of the two species as well as their sizes.

Critical adsorption at chemically structured substrates

We consider binary liquid mixtures near their critical consolute points and exposed to geometrically flat but chemically structured substrates. The chemical contrast between the various substrate structures amounts to opposite local preferences for the two species of the binary liquid mixtures. Order parameters profiles are calculated for a chemical step, for a single chemical stripe, and for a periodic stripe pattern. The order parameter distributions exhibit frustration across the chemical steps which heals upon approaching the bulk. The corresponding spatial variation of the order parameter and its dependence on temperature are governed by universal scaling functions which we calculate within mean field theory. These scaling functions also determine the universal behavior of the excess adsorption relative to suitably chosen reference systems.

Effective pair interactions between colloidal particles at a nematic-isotropic interface

The Landau-de Gennes free energy is used to study theoretically the interaction of parallel cylindrical colloidal particles trapped at a nematic-isotropic interface. We find that the effective interaction potential is non-monotonic. The corresponding force-distance curves exhibit jumps and hysteresis upon approach/separation due to the creation/annihilation of topological defects. Minimization results suggest a simple empirical pair potential for the effective colloid-colloid interaction at the interface. We propose that the interface-mediated interaction can play an important role in self-organization and clustering of colloidal particles at such interfaces.

Effective capillary interaction of spherical particles at fluid interfaces

We present a detailed analysis of the effective force between two smooth spherical colloids floating at a fluid interface due to deformations of the interface. The results hold in general and are applicable independently of the source of the deformation provided the capillary deformations are small so that a superposition approximation for the deformations is valid. We conclude that an effective long--ranged attraction is possible if the net force on the system does not vanish. Otherwise, the interaction is short--ranged and cannot be computed reliably based on the superposition approximation. As an application, we consider the case of like--charged, smooth nanoparticles and electrostatically induced capillary deformation. The resulting long--ranged capillary attraction can be easily tuned by a relatively small external electrostatic field, but it cannot explain recent experimental observations of attraction if these experimental systems were indeed isolated.

Bulk and wetting phenomena in a colloidal mixture of hard spheres and platelets

Density functional theory is used to study binary colloidal fluids consisting of hard spheres and thin platelets in their bulk and near a planar hard wall. This system exhibits liquid-liquid coexistence of a phase that is rich in spheres (poor in platelets) and a phase that is poor in spheres (rich in platelets). For the mixture near a planar hard wall, we find that the phase rich in spheres wets the wall completely upon approaching the liquid demixing binodal from the sphere-poor phase, provided the concentration of the platelets is smaller than a threshold value which marks a first-order wetting transition at coexistence. No layering transitions are found in contrast to recent studies on binary mixtures of spheres and non-adsorbing polymers or thin hard rods.

Liquid-crystalline Casimir effect in the presence of a patterned substrate

We consider a nematic liquid crystal confined by two parallel planar interfaces, one being laterally homogeneous and the other provided by a substrate endowed with a periodic chemical stripe pattern. Based on continuum theory we analyze the influence of the lateral pattern on the liquid-crystalline Casimir force acting on the interfaces of the nematic cell at distance d due to the thermal fluctuations of the nematic director. For d much larger than the pattern periodicity, the influence of the patterned substrate can be described by a homogeneous, effective anchoring energy. By tuning this parameter we recover previous results for the liquid-crystalline Casimir force. For the general case, i.e., smaller separations, we present new numerical results.

Critical adsorption and Casimir torque in wedges and at ridges

Geometrical structures of confining surfaces profoundly influence the adsorption of fluids upon approaching a critical point T_c in their bulk phase diagram, i.e., for t=(T-T_c)/T_c -> +/-0. Guided by general scaling considerations, we calculate, within mean-field theory, the temperature dependence of the order parameter profile in a wedge with opening angle gamma pi) for T>T_c and T +/-0)~Gamma_\pm(gamma)|t|^{beta-2nu} we compute the universal amplitudes Gamma_\pm(gamma), which diverge as Gamma_\pm(gamma ->0)~1/gamma for small opening angles, vary linearly close to gamma=pi for gamma 2pi. There is evidence that, within mean-field theory, the ratio Gamma_+(gamma)/Gamma_-(gamma) is independent of gamma. We also discuss the critical Casimir torque acting on the sides of the wedge as a function of the opening angle and temperature.
