A multi-band, multi-level, multi-electron model for efficient FDTD simulations of electromagnetic interactions with semiconductor quantum wells

We report a new computational model for simulations of electromagnetic interactions with semiconductor quantum well(s) (SQW) in complex electromagnetic geometries using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The presented model is based on an approach of spanning a large number of electron transverse momentum states in each SQW sub-band (multi-band) with a small number of discrete multi-electron states (multi-level, multi-electron). This enables accurate and efficient two dimensional (2-D) and 3-D simulations of nanophotonic devices with SQW active media. The model includes the following features: (1) Optically induced interband transitions between various SQW conduction and heavy-hole or light-hole sub-bands are considered. (2) Novel intra sub-band and inter sub-band transition terms are derived to thermalize the electron and hole occupational distributions to the correct Fermi-Dirac distributions. (3) The terms in (2) result in an explicit update scheme which circumvents numerically cumbersome iterative procedures. This significantly augments computational efficiency. (4) Explicit update terms to account for carrier leakage to unconfined states are derived which thermalize the bulk and SQW populations to a common quasi-equilibrium Fermi-Dirac distribution. (5) Auger recombination and intervalence band absorption are included. The model is validated by comparisons to analytic band filling calculations, simulations of SQW optical gain spectra and photonic crystal lasers.

The lightest neutral hypernuclei with strangeness -1 and -2

Our current knowledge of the baryon--baryon interaction suggests that the dineutron $(n,n)$ and its strange analogue $(n,Λ)$ are unstable. In contrast, the situation is more favorable for the strange three-body system $(n,n,Λ)$, and even better for the four-body system $T\equiv (n,n,Λ,Λ)$ with strangeness $-2$, which is likely to be stable under spontaneous dissociation. The recent models of the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions suggest that the stability of the $(n,n,Λ)$ and $T$ is possible within the uncertainties of our knowledge of the baryon-baryon interactions. This new nucleus $T$ could be produced and identified in central deuteron--deuteron collisions via reaction $d+d\to T+K^++K^+$, and the tetrabaryon $T$ could play an important role in catalyzing the formation of a strange core in neutron stars.

Attentional Neural Network: Feature Selection Using Cognitive Feedback

Attentional Neural Network is a new framework that integrates top-down cognitive bias and bottom-up feature extraction in one coherent architecture. The top-down influence is especially effective when dealing with high noise or difficult segmentation problems. Our system is modular and extensible. It is also easy to train and cheap to run, and yet can accommodate complex behaviors. We obtain classification accuracy better than or competitive with state of art results on the MNIST variation dataset, and successfully disentangle overlaid digits with high success rates. We view such a general purpose framework as an essential foundation for a larger system emulating the cognitive abilities of the whole brain.

A geometric approach for sharp Local well-posedness of quasilinear wave equations

The commuting vector fields approach, devised for strichartz estimates in [13], was developed for proving the local well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s>2+\frac{2-\sqrt{3}}{2}$ for general quasi-linear wave equation in ${\mathbb R}^{1+3}$ by Klainerman and Rodnianski. Via this approach they obtained the local well-posedness in $H^s$ with $s>2$ for $(1+3)$ vacuum Einstein equations, by taking advantage of the vanishing Ricci curvature. The sharp, $H^{2+ε}$, local well-posedness result for general quasilinear wave equation was achieved by Smith and Tataru by constructing a parametrix using wave packets. Using the vector fields approach, one has to face the major hurdle caused by the Ricci tensor of the metric for the quasi-linear wave equations. This posed a question that if the geometric approach can provide the sharp result for the non-geometric equations. In this paper, based on geometric normalization and new observations on the mass aspect function, we prove the sharp local well-posedness of general quasilinear wave equation in ${\Bbb R}^{1+3}$ by a vector field approach.

Possibility of a new neutral hypernucleus (n,n,Lambda,Lambda)

The status of the light hypernuclei is reviewed, and discussed with models based either on the Nijmegen-RIKEN baryon--baryon interaction or on recent studies using chiral effective field theory. The latter suggests a significantly shorter range for the $ΛΛ$ interaction, and this favours the formation of a Borromean state made of two neutrons and two hyperons. Various corrections are discussed, in particular the coupling of $NΛ$ to $NΣ$, or of $ΛΛ$ to $NΞ$, and the role of tensor forces. The new nucleus $(n,n,Λ,Λ)$ could be produced in various reactions, in particular deuteron--deuteron scattering with the simultaneous production of two charged kaons, for which an estimate of the cross section is provided.

Delivery of Liquid Metal to the Target Vessels as Vascular Embolic Agent to Starve Diseased Tissues or Tumors to Death

Tumor growth relies heavily on the continuous blood and nutrients supply. Theoretically, it is an ideal therapeutic way of killing tumor by only vascular embolization. However, most of the existing vascular embolic agents are still rather insufficient to fulfill the real clinical need due to the reasons like: incomplete filling of target vasculature, being easily washed away by blood or body solution, or just producing toxicity to tissues. Here from an alternative way, the body temperature liquid metal, a kind of soft and highly compliant material, was proposed for the first time as blood vessel embolization agent for tumor physical therapy. With its unique capability of easy phase transition between liquid and solid state and sub-cooling behavior, such material can be fluently injected into the tiny vessels including ending capillaries and fully block them. The in vitro cytotoxicity experiments were performed which showed that treating localized diseased tissues through liquid metal embolic agent is acceptable. Endowed with a high density, the liquid metal-filled vessels are highly visible under the CT scan, which offers the potential of diagnosis-treatment integration. To further demonstrate the new conceptual liquid metal vascular embolization therapy, several experiments on in vivo vasculatures of rabbit ears and mouse tails were performed to provide evidences of destroying the targeted tissues. To interpret the liquid metal starvation therapy effects, a theoretical model was established to simulate the tumor growth with zero, partial or complete filling of the metal agent inside the vessels. All the results support that, given appropriate administration, the liquid metal embolization is able to destruct the target regions and might starve the tumors to death through a relatively easy way. This study lays the foundation of a promising tumor starvation therapy in the coming time.

$Y(4260)$ as the first $S$-wave open charm vector molecular state?

Since its first observation in 2005, the vector charmonium $Y(4260)$ has turned out to be one of the prime candidates for an exotic state in the charmonium spectrum. It was recently proposed that the $Y(4260)$ should have a prominent $D_1\bar{D}+c.c.$ molecular component that is strongly correlated with the production of the charged $Z_c(3900)$. In this paper we demonstrate that the nontrivial cross section line shapes of $e^+e^-\to J/ψππ$ and $h_cππ$ can be naturally explained by the molecular scenario. As a consequence we find a significantly smaller mass for the $Y(4260)$ than previous studied. In the $e^+e^-\to \bar D D^*π+c.c.$ process, with the inclusion of an additional $S$-wave $\bar D^*π$ contribution constrained from data on the $D\bar D^*$ invariant mass distribution, we obtain a good agreement with the data of the angular distributions. We also predict an unusual line shape of $Y(4260)$ in this channel that may serve as a smoking gun for a predominantly molecular nature of $Y(4260)$. Improved measurements of these observables are therefore crucial for a better understanding of the structure of this famous resonance.

Mode-matching metasurfaces: coherent reconstruction and multiplexing of surface waves

Metasurfaces are promising two-dimensional metamaterials that are engineered to provide unique properties or functionalities absent in naturally occurring homogeneous surfaces. Here, we report a type of metasurface for tailored reconstruction of surface plasmon waves from light. The design is generic in a way that one can selectively generate different surface plasmon waves through simple variation of the wavelength or the polarization state of incident light. The ultra-thin metasurface demonstrated in this paper provides a versatile interface between the conventional free-space optics and a two-dimensional platform such as surface plasmonics.

Search for $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotic state in $e^+e^-$ annihilation

The charmed meson pair $(\frac{3}{2})^+$ and anti-$(\frac{1}{2})^-$, i.e. $D_1(2420)\bar D+c.c.$, $D_1(2420)\bar D^*+c.c.$, $D_2(2460)\bar D^*+c.c.$, can couple to states with vector quantum number $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ and exotic quantum number $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ in a relative $S$ wave. Near threshold, the charmed meson pair may form hadronic molecules due to the strong $S$-wave coupling, and the mysterious vector state $Y(4260)$ could be such a state of the $D_1(2420)\bar D+c.c.$ molecule. This implies the possible existence of its exotic partner made of the same charmed mesons but with $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$. We evaluate the production rate of such exotic hadronic molecules and propose a direct experimental search for them in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The confirmation of such exotic states in experiment will shed light on the spectrum in the heavy quark sector.

Y(4260): hadronic molecule versus hadro-charmonium interpretation

In this paper we confront both the hadronic molecule and the hadro-charmonium interpretations of the $\y$ with the experimental data currently available. We conclude that the data support the $\y$ being dominantly a $D_1\bar D+c.c.$ hadronic molecule while they challenge the hadro-charmonium interpretation. However, additional data is necessary to allow for stronger conclusions.

Probing the nature of $Y(4260)$ and $Z_c(3900)$ in the isospin violating process $Y(4260) \to J/ψηπ^0$

The isospin violation process $Y(4260) \to J/ψηπ^{0}$ is studied assuming that $Y(4260)$ is a $D_{1} \bar{D}+c.c.$ hadronic molecule. In association with the production of the $Z_c(3900)$, which is treated as a $D \bar{D}^{*}+c.c.$ hadronic molecule, this process can help us distinguish their molecular natures from other scenarios, since the incomplete cancellation between the charged and neutral--meson loops, which are prominent in the molecular picture only, produces a peak in the $e^+e^-\to Y(4260)\to J/ψηπ^0$ cross section at the $D_{1} \bar{D}+c.c.$ threshold and a very prominent peak in the $J/ψη$ invariant mass spectrum in between the $D \bar{D}^{*}+c.c.$ thresholds; the latter being much narrower than the corresponding one in the isospin conserving channel, i.e. $J/ψπ^+ π^{-}$. The partial width of $Y(4260)\to J/ψηπ^0$ is about $4 \times 10^{-4}$ of that of $Y(4260)\to J/ψπ^+π^-$. The cross section of $e^+e^-\to Y(4260)\to J/ψηπ^0$ at the $D_{1} \bar{D}+c.c.$ threshold is about $0.05 \ \mathrm{pb}$ which is much larger than that produced by the nearby resonances. These features are the direct consequences of the assumed nature of these two states which might be accessible at the high-statistics experiments such as BESIII and LHCb.

Liquid Metal Angiography for Mega Contrast X-ray Visualization of Vascular Network

Visualizing the anatomical vessel networks plays a vital role in physiological or pathological investigations. However, identifying the fine structures of the smallest capillary vessels via conventional imaging ways remains a big challenge. Here, the room temperature liquid metal angiography was proposed for the first time to produce mega contrast X-ray images for multi-scale vasculature mapping. Gallium was used as the room temperature liquid metal contrast agent and perfused into the vessels of in vitro pig hearts and kidneys. We scanned the samples under X-ray and compared the angiograms with those obtained via conventional contrast agent--the iohexol. As quantitatively proved by the gray scale histograms, the contrast of the vessels to the surrounding tissues in the liquid metal angiograms is orders higher than that of the iohexol enhanced images. And the resolution of the angiograms has reached 100μm, which means the capillaries can be clearly distinguished in the liquid metal enhanced images. With tomography from the micro-CT, we also managed to reconstruct the 3-dementional structures of the kidney vessels. Tremendous clarity and efficiency of the method over existing approaches were experimentally demonstrated. It was disclosed that the usually invisible capillary networks now become distinctively clear in the gallium angiograms. This mechanism can be generalized and extended to a wide spectrum of 3-dimensional computational tomographic areas. It provides a soft tool for quickly reconstructing high resolution spatial channel networks for scientific researches or engineering applications where complicated and time consuming surgical procedures are no longer necessary.

Meson loop singularity, exotic states' productions and decays near threshold

We investigate in detail the "triangle singularity" regions of meson loops where the corresponding intermediate mesons are nearly-on-shell and have relatively small momenta, and the two heavy mesons strongly interact with each other in an $S$ wave. This $S$-wave interaction will make such kind of meson loops always enhanced and can explain experimental observations of threshold enhancements. We show that the production of the $Y(4260)$ and the recently observed $Z_c(3900)$ can be related to each other by this mechanism which will allow for a possible understanding of the nature of these threshold enhancements.

Decoding the riddle of Y(4260) and $Z_c(3900)$

The observation of $Z_c(3900)$ by the BESIII collaboration in the invariant mass spectrum of $J/ψπ^\pm$ in $e^+e^-\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ at the center of mass 4.260 GeV suggests the existence of a charged $\bar D D^*+D\bar D^*$ molecular state with $I(J^P)=1(1^+)$, which could be an isovector brother of the famous X(3872) and an analogue of $Z_b(10610)$ claimed by the Belle Collaboration. We demonstrate that this observation provides strong evidence that the mysterious Y(4260) is a $\bar{D}D_1(2420) +D\bar{D}_1(2420)$ molecular state. Especially, we show that the decay of this molecule naturally populates low momentum $\bar DD^*$ pairs and leads unavoidably to a cusp at the $\bar DD^*$ threshold. We discuss the signatures that distinguish such a $\bar DD^*$ cusp from the presence of a true resonance.

Data Center Cost Optimization Via Workload Modulation Under Real-World Electricity Pricing

We formulate optimization problems to study how data centers might modulate their power demands for cost-effective operation taking into account three key complex features exhibited by real-world electricity pricing schemes: (i) time-varying prices (e.g., time-of-day pricing, spot pricing, or higher energy prices during coincident peaks) and (ii) separate charge for peak power consumption. Our focus is on demand modulation at the granularity of an entire data center or a large part of it. For computational tractability reasons, we work with a fluid model for power demands which we imagine can be modulated using two abstract knobs of demand dropping and demand delaying (each with its associated penalties or costs). Given many data center workloads and electric prices can be effectively predicted using statistical modeling techniques, we devise a stochastic dynamic program (SDP) that can leverage such predictive models. Since the SDP can be computationally infeasible in many real platforms, we devise approximations for it. We also devise fully online algorithms that might be useful for scenarios with poor power demand or utility price predictability. For one of our online algorithms, we prove a competitive ratio of 2-1/n. Finally, using empirical evaluation with both real-world and synthetic power demands and real-world prices, we demonstrate the efficacy of our techniques. As two salient empirically-gained insights: (i) demand delaying is more effective than demand dropping regarding to peak shaving (e.g., 10.74% cost saving with only delaying vs. 1.45% with only dropping for Google workload) and (ii) workloads tend to have different cost saving potential under various electricity tariffs (e.g., 16.97% cost saving under peak-based tariff vs. 1.55% under time-varying pricing tariff for Facebook workload).

Systematic study of the singularity mechanism in heavy quarkonium decays

We investigate in detail the role of heavy meson loops in the transition from $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ sources to candidates for QCD "exotics", such as $Z_c(3900)$, $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b'(10650)$. We demonstrate that, if a vector state strongly couples to a heavy meson pair in an $S$--wave and this system decays to another heavy meson pair (e.g. via pion emission), again in an $S$-wave, the pertinent diagrams get enhanced significantly, if the intermediate states are (near) on--shell and have small relative momenta. In a limited kinematic range this mechanism generates "singularity regions" that lead to the creation of a large number of low energy heavy meson pairs, providing an ideal environment for the formation of hadron-hadron bound states or resonances. For instance, we predict that the signals for $Z_b$ and $Z_b'$ should be a lot stronger in $Υ(6S)$ decays due to this mechanism, if these states are indeed hadron-hadron resonances. The findings of this work should be valuable for deepening our understanding of the nature of the mentioned states.

Further understanding of the non-$D\bar D$ decays of $ψ(3770)$

We provide details of the study of $ψ(3770)$ non-$D\bar D$ decays into $VP$, where $V$ and $P$ denote light vector meson and pseudoscalar meson, respectively. We find that the electromagnetic (EM) interaction plays little role in these processes, while the strong interaction dominates. The strong interaction can be separated into two parts, i.e. the short-distance part probing the wave function at origin and the long-distance part reflecting the soft gluon exchanged dynamics. The long-distance part is thus described by the intermediate charmed meson loops. We show that the transition of $ψ(3770)\to VP$ can be related to $ψ(3686)\to VP$ such that the parameters in our model can be constrained by comparing the different parts in $ψ(3770)\to VP$ to those in $ψ(3686)\to VP$. Our quantitative results confirm the findings of [Zhang {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 172001 (2009)] that the OZI-rule-evading long-distance strong interaction via the IML plays an important role in $ψ(3770)$ decays, and could be a key towards a full understanding of the mysterious $ψ(3770)$ non-$D\bar{D}$ decay mechanism.

Production of the X(3872) in charmonia radiative decays

We discuss the possibilities of producing the X(3872), which is assumed to be a D \bar D^* bound state, in radiative decays of charmonia. We argue that the ideal energy regions to observe the X(3872) associated with a photon in e^+e^- annihilations are around the Y(4260) mass and around 4.45 GeV, due to the presence of the S-wave D \bar D_1(2420) and D^* \bar D_1(2420) threshold, respectively. Especially, if the Y(4260) is dominantly a D \bar D_1 molecule and the X(3872) a D \bar D^* molecule, the radiative transition strength will be quite large.
