Virtually Full-duplex Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Access Point Mode Assignment

We consider a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network utilizing a virtually full-duplex (vFD) mode, where access points (APs) with a downlink (DL) mode and those with an uplink (UL) mode simultaneously serve DL and UL users (UEs). In order to maximize the sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the DL and UL transmissions, we formulate a mixed-integer optimization problem to jointly design the AP mode assignment and power control. This problem is subject to minimum per-UE SE requirements, per-AP power control, and per-UL UE power constraints. By employing the successive convex approximation technique, we propose an algorithm to obtain a stationary solution of the formulated problem. Numerical results show that the proposed vFD approach can provide a sum SE that is $2.5$ and $1.5$ times larger than the traditional half-duplex and heuristic baseline schemes, respectively, in terms of $95\%$-likely sum SE.

Data Size-Aware Downlink Massive MIMO: A Session-Based Approach

This letter considers the development of transmission strategies for the downlink of massive multiple-input multiple-output networks, with the objective of minimizing the completion time of the transmission. Specifically, we introduce a session-based scheme that splits time into sessions and allocates different rates in different sessions for the different users. In each session, one user is selected to complete its transmission and will not join subsequent sessions, which results in successively lower levels of interference when moving from one session to the next. An algorithm is developed to assign users and allocate transmit power that minimizes the completion time. Numerical results show that our proposed session-based scheme significantly outperforms conventional non-session-based schemes.

When Cell-Free Massive MIMO Meets OTFS Modulation: The Downlink Case

We provide a performance evaluation of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation in cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems. By leveraging the inherent sparsity of the delay-Doppler (DD) representation of time-varying channels, we apply the embedded pilot-aided channel estimation method with reduced guard intervals and derive the minimum mean-square error estimate of the channel gains from received uplink pilots at the access points (APs). Each AP applies conjugate beamforming to transmit data to the users. We derive a closed-form expression for the individual user downlink throughput as a function of the numbers of APs, users and DD channel estimate parameters. We compare the OTFS performance with that of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) at high-mobility conditions. Our findings reveal that with uncorrelated shadowing, cell-free massive MIMO with OTFS modulation achieves up to 35% gain in 95%-likely per-user throughput, compared with the OFDM counterpart. Finally, the increase in the per user throughput is more pronounced at the median rates over the correlated shadowing scenarios.

Cell-Free Massive MIMO with OTFS Modulation: Power Control and Resource Allocation

We consider the downlink of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. Two pilot-based channel estimation schemes, namely superimposed pilot-based (SP-CHE) and embedded pilot-based channel estimation (EP-CHE), are applied to estimate the channels at the access points (APs). The SP-CHE scheme superimposes low power pilots onto the data symbols in the delay-Doppler domain to avoid the spectral efficiency (SE) loss due to null guard intervals used in the EP-CHE scheme. In the case of SP-CHE scheme, we consider a max-min fairness optimization problem to jointly optimize the peruser pilot/data power allocation coefficients and per-AP power control coefficients. The complicated non-convex problem is then iteratively solved through two decoupled sub-problems. Moreover, a max-min fairness problem is cast for the EP-CHE scheme, where the optimization variables are the per-AP power control coefficients. Numerical results show that the proposed resource allocation approaches provide at most 42 and 5-fold increase in the 95%-likely per-user SE for the SP-CHE and EP-CHE scheme, respectively, compared with the uniform power control and in correlated shadowing fading channels.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Wideband THz Communications: Modeling and Analysis

In this paper, we study the performance of wideband terahertz (THz) communications assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, we first introduce a generalized channel model that is suitable for electrically large THz IRSs operating in the near-field. Unlike prior works, our channel model takes into account the spherical wavefront of the emitted electromagnetic waves and the spatial-wideband effect. We next show that conventional frequency-flat beamfocusing significantly reduces the power gain due to beam squint, and hence is highly suboptimal. More importantly, we analytically characterize this reduction when the spacing between adjacent reflecting elements is negligible, i.e., holographic reflecting surfaces. Numerical results corroborate our analysis and provide important insights into the design of future IRS-aided THz systems.

Electromagnetic Modeling of Holographic Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces at Terahertz Bands

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted wireless communication is widely deemed a key technology for 6G systems. The main challenge in deploying an IRS-aided terahertz (THz) link, though, is the severe propagation losses at high frequency bands. Hence, a THz IRS is expected to consist of a massive number of reflecting elements to compensate for those losses. However, as the IRS size grows, the conventional far-field assumption starts becoming invalid and the spherical wavefront of the radiated waves must be taken into account. In this work, we focus on the near-field and analytically determine the IRS response in the Fresnel zone by leveraging electromagnetic theory. Specifically, we derive a novel expression for the path loss and beampattern of a holographic IRS, which is then used to model its discrete counterpart. Our analysis sheds light on the modeling aspects and beamfocusing capabilities of THz IRSs.

How Does Cell-Free Massive MIMO Support Multiple Federated Learning Groups?

Federated learning (FL) has been considered as a promising learning framework for future machine learning systems due to its privacy preservation and communication efficiency. In beyond-5G/6G systems, it is likely to have multiple FL groups with different learning purposes. This scenario leads to a question: How does a wireless network support multiple FL groups? As an answer, we first propose to use a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network to guarantee the stable operation of multiple FL processes by letting the iterations of these FL processes be executed together within a large-scale coherence time. We then develop a novel scheme that asynchronously executes the iterations of FL processes under multicasting downlink and conventional uplink transmission protocols. Finally, we propose a simple/low-complexity resource allocation algorithm which optimally chooses the power and computation resources to minimize the execution time of each iteration of each FL process.

3-D Deployment of UAV Swarm for Massive MIMO Communications

We consider the uplink transmission between a multi-antenna ground station and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm. The UAVs are assumed as intelligent agents, which can explore their optimal three dimensional (3-D) deployment to maximize the channel capacity of the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system. Specifically, considering the limitations of each UAV in accessing the global information of the network, we focus on a decentralized control strategy by noting that each UAV in the swarm can only utilize the local information to achieve the optimal 3-D deployment. In this case, the optimization problem can be divided into several optimization sub-problems with respect to the rank function. Due to the non-convex nature of the rank function and the fact that the optimization sub-problems are coupled, the original problem is NP-hard and, thus, cannot be solved with standard convex optimization solvers. Interestingly, we can relax the constraint condition of each sub-problem and solve the optimization problem by a formulated UAVs channel capacity maximization game. We analyze such game according to the designed reward function and the potential function. Then, we discuss the existence of the pure Nash equilibrium in the game. To achieve the best Nash equilibrium of the MIMO system, we develop a decentralized learning algorithm, namely decentralized UAVs channel capacity learning. The details of the algorithm are provided, and then, the convergence, the effectiveness and the computational complexity are analyzed, respectively. Moreover, we give some insightful remarks based on the proofs and the theoretical analysis. Also, extensive simulations illustrate that the developed learning algorithm can achieve a high MIMO channel capacity by optimizing the 3-D UAV swarm deployment with the local information.

Optimal Per-Antenna ADC Bit Allocation in Correlated and Cell-Free Massive MIMO

In Massive MIMO base stations (BSs), the hardware design needs to balance high spectral efficiency (SE) with low complexity. The level of hardware impairments (HWIs) indicates how strong the signal distortion introduced by hardware imperfections is. In particular, the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) have an important impact on signal distortion and power consumption. This article addresses the fundamental problem of selecting the optimal hardware quality in the Massive MIMO space. In particular, we examine the optimal HWI and ADC bit allocation per BS antenna to maximize the SE. The results show that in co-located arrays with low channel gain variations across antennas, equal ADC bit allocation is optimal. In contrast, cell-free Massive MIMO systems benefit the most from optimizing the ADC bit allocation achieving improvements in the order of 2 [bit-per-channel-use] per user equipment when using regularized zero-forcing (RZF). In addition, when including the impact of power consumption in cell-free Massive MIMO with RZF, allocating low values of mixed ADC bit resolutions across the BS antennas can increase the energy efficiency up to 30% compared to equal ADC bit allocation.

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces at Terahertz Bands: Channel Modeling and Analysis

An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) at terahertz (THz) bands is expected to have a massive number of reflecting elements to compensate for the severe propagation losses. However, as the IRS size grows, the conventional far-field assumption starts becoming invalid and the spherical wavefront of the radiated waves should be taken into account. In this work, we consider a spherical wave channel model and pursue a comprehensive study of IRS-aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in terms of power gain and energy efficiency (EE). Specifically, we first analyze the power gain under beamfocusing and beamforming, and show that the latter is suboptimal even for multiple meters away from the IRS. To this end, we derive an approximate, yet accurate, closed-form expression for the loss in the power gain under beamforming. Building on the derived model, we next show that an IRS can significantly improve the EE of MIMO when it operates in the radiating near-field and performs beamfocusing. Numerical results corroborate our analysis and provide novel insights into the design and performance of IRS-assisted THz communication.

Model-based Learning Network for 3-D Localization in mmWave Communications

This study considers the joint location and velocity estimation of UE and scatterers in a three-dimensional mmWave CRAN architecture. Several existing works have achieved satisfactory results with neural networks (NNs) for localization. However, the black box NN localization method has limited performance and relies on a prohibitive amount of training data. Thus, we propose a model-based learning network for localization by combining NNs with geometric models. Specifically, we first develop an unbiased WLS estimator by utilizing hybrid delay/angular measurements, which determine the location and velocity of the UE in only one estimator, and can obtain the location and velocity of scatterers further. The proposed estimator can achieve the CRLB and outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Second, we establish a NN-assisted localization method (NN-WLS) by replacing the linear approximations in the proposed WLS localization model with NNs to learn higher-order error components, thereby enhancing the performance of the estimator. The solution possesses the powerful learning ability of the NN and the robustness of the proposed geometric model. Moreover, the ensemble learning is applied to improve the localization accuracy further. Comprehensive simulations show that the proposed NN-WLS is superior to the benchmark methods in terms of localization accuracy, robustness, and required time resources.

Channel Estimation and Hybrid Combining for Wideband Terahertz Massive MIMO Systems

Terahertz (THz) communication is widely considered as a key enabler for future 6G wireless systems. However, THz links are subject to high propagation losses and inter-symbol interference due to the frequency selectivity of the channel. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) along with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be used to deal with these problems. Nevertheless, when the propagation delay across the base station (BS) antenna array exceeds the symbol period, the spatial response of the BS array varies across the OFDM subcarriers. This phenomenon, known as beam squint, renders narrowband combining approaches ineffective. Additionally, channel estimation becomes challenging in the absence of combining gain during the training stage. In this work, we address the channel estimation and hybrid combining problems in wideband THz massive MIMO with uniform planar arrays. Specifically, we first introduce a low-complexity beam squint mitigation scheme based on true-time-delay. Next, we propose a novel variant of the popular orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm to accurately estimate the channel with low training overhead. Our channel estimation and hybrid combining schemes are analyzed both theoretically and numerically. Moreover, the proposed schemes are extended to the multi-antenna user case. Simulation results are provided showcasing the performance gains offered by our design compared to standard narrowband combining and OMP-based channel estimation.

On the Uplink Transmission of Multi-user Extra-large Scale Massive MIMO Systems

With the inherent benefits, such as, better cell coverage and higher area throughput, extra-large scale massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has great potential to be one of the key technologies for the next generation wireless communication systems. However, in practice, when the antenna dimensions grow large, spatial non-stationarities occur and users will only see a portion of the base station antenna array, which we call visibility region (VR). To assess the impact of spatial non-stationarities, in this paper, we investigate the uplink transmission of extra-large scale massive MIMO systems by considering VRs. In particular, we first propose a subarray-based system architecture for extra-large scale massive MIMO systems. Then, tight closed-form uplink spectral efficiency (SE) approximations with linear receivers are derived. With the objective of maximizing the achievable SE, we also propose schemes for the subarray phase coefficient design. In addition, based on the obtained ergodic achievable SE approximations, two statistical channel state information (CSI)-based greedy user scheduling algorithms are developed. Our results indicate that the statistical CSI-based greedy joint user and subarray scheduling algorithm collaborating with the on-off switch-based subarray architecture is a promising practical solution for extra-large scale massive MIMO systems.

The Road to 6G: Ten Physical Layer Challenges for Communications Engineers

While the deployment of 5G cellular systems will continue well in to the next decade, much interest is already being generated towards technologies that will underlie its successor, 6G. Undeniably, 5G will have transformative impact on the way we live and communicate, yet, it is still far away from supporting the Internet-of-Everything (IoE), where upwards of a million devices per $\textrm{km}^3$ (both terrestrial and aerial) will require ubiquitous, reliable, low-latency connectivity. This article looks at some of the fundamental problems that pertain to key physical layer enablers for 6G. This includes highlighting challenges related to intelligent reflecting surfaces, cell-free massive MIMO and THz communications. Our analysis covers theoretical modeling challenges, hardware implementation issues and scalability among others. The article concludes by delineating the critical role of signal processing in the new era for wireless communications.

Towards Large Intelligent Surface (LIS)-based Communications

The concept of large intelligent surface (LIS)-based communication has recently raised research attention, in which a LIS is regarded as an antenna array whose entire surface area can be used for radio signal transmission and reception. To provide a fundamental understanding of LIS-based communication, this paper studies the uplink (UL) performance of LIS-based communication with matched filtering. We first investigate the new properties introduced by LIS. In particular, the array gain, spatial resolution, and the capability of interference suppression are theoretically presented and characterized. Then, we study two possible LIS system layouts in terms of UL, i.e., centralized LIS (C-LIS) and distributed LIS (D-LIS). Our analysis showcases that a centralized system has strong capability of interference suppression; in fact, interference can nearly be eliminated if the surface area is sufficient large or the frequency band is sufficient high. For D-LIS, we propose a series of resource allocation algorithms, including user association scheme, orientation control, and power control, to extend the coverage area of a distributed system. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms significantly improve the system performance, and even more importantly, we observe that D-LIS outperforms CLIS in microwave bands, while C-LIS is superior to D-LIS in mmWave bands. These observations serve as useful guidelines for practical LIS deployments.

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces with Spatial Modulation: An Electromagnetic Perspective

Electromagnetic wave control using the concept of a reflecting surface is first studied as a near-field and a far-field problem. Using a secondary source present in a wireless communication environment, such as a backscatter tag, it is possible to leverage the incoming radiation from the source as a reference-wave to synthesize the desired wavefront across the reflecting surface, radiating a field of interest. In this geometry, the phase grating, which is synthesized using an array of sub-wavelength unit cells, is calculated by interacting the incident reference-wave and the desired wavefront, similar to a hologram. When illuminated by the reference-wave, the reflected wavefront from the calculated phase grating is guaranteed to constructively add in the direction of the desired radiation (beam-steering in the far-field) and also focus at the intended depth (beam-focusing in the radiative near-field). Leveraging a dynamic modulation mechanism in the context of an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) illuminated by a backscatter tag, later, we present that one can selectively focus and defocus at an arbitrarily positioned receiver within the 3D field of view of the reflecting surface. This enables the control of the amplitude of the radiated electric field at the receiver location, paving the way for a spatial modulation mechanism by means of reconfiguring the reflecting surface in a backscattered wireless communication environment. In addition to the phase modification approach on a unit cell level to reconfigure the aperture radiated wavefronts, we finally present a time varying IRS concept making use of a time-delay based approach relying on a delay adjustment between the reflection coefficients of the IRS' unit cell lattices.

Prospective Multiple Antenna Technologies for Beyond 5G

Multiple antenna technologies have attracted large research interest for several decades and have gradually made their way into mainstream communication systems. Two main benefits are adaptive beamforming gains and spatial multiplexing, leading to high data rates per user and per cell, especially when large antenna arrays are used. Now that multiple antenna technology has become a key component of the fifth-generation (5G) networks, it is time for the research community to look for new multiple antenna applications to meet the immensely higher data rate, reliability, and traffic demands in the beyond 5G era. We need radically new approaches to achieve orders-of-magnitude improvements in these metrics and this will be connected to large technical challenges, many of which are yet to be identified. In this survey paper, we present a survey of three new multiple antenna related research directions that might play a key role in beyond 5G networks: Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), beamspace massive MIMO, and intelligent reflecting surfaces. More specifically, the fundamental motivation and key characteristics of these new technologies are introduced. Recent technical progress is also presented. Finally, we provide a list of other prospective future research directions.
