Renormalons in Effective Field Theories

We investigate the high-order behavior of perturbative matching conditions in effective field theories. These series are typically badly divergent, and are not Borel summable due to infrared and ultraviolet renormalons which introduce ambiguities in defining the sum of the series. We argue that, when treated consistently, there is no physical significance to these ambiguities. Although nonperturbative matrix elements and matching conditions are in general ambiguous, the ambiguity in any physical observable is always higher order in $1/M$ than the theory has been defined. We discuss the implications for the recently noticed infrared renormalon in the pole mass of a heavy quark. We show that a ratio of form factors in exclusive $Λ_b$ decays (which is related to the pole mass) is free from renormalon ambiguities regardless of the mass used as the expansion parameter of HQET. The renormalon ambiguities also cancel in inclusive heavy hadron decays. Finally, we demonstrate the cancellation of renormalons in a four-Fermi effective theory obtained by integrating out a heavy colored scalar.

Charm Mass Dependence of the $\CO(α_s^2 n_f)$ Correction to Inclusive $B\rightarrow X_c e\barν_e$ Decay

We compute the $α_s^2 n_f$ perturbative QCD contribution to semileptonic B decay, including the finite mass of the charm quark. This result provides an estimate of the size of the two-loop correction, which is found to be about 50\% of the one-loop correction. We use these results to set the scale for the one-loop correction using the scheme of Brodsky, Lepage and Mackenzie and find a BLM scale of $μ_{\rm BLM} = 0.13\, m_b$, when the inclusive semileptonic rate is expressed in terms of the $b$ and $c$ quark pole masses and the \msbar strong coupling. The two loop correction lies roughly midway between that obtained at $m_c=0$ and that obtained in the Shifman-Voloshin limit $m_b, m_c\gg m_b-m_c\ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$ while the corresponding BLM scale is somewhat closer to that obtained in the former case.

Perturbative Strong Interaction Corrections to the Heavy Quark Semileptonic Decay Rate

We calculate the part of the order $α_s^2$ correction to the semileptonic heavy quark decay rate proportional to the number of light quark flavors, and use our result to set the scale for evaluating the strong coupling in the order $α_s$ term according to the scheme of Brodsky, Lepage and Mackenzie. Expressing the decay rate in terms of the heavy quark pole mass $m_Q$, we find the scale for the $\overline{MS}$ strong coupling to be $0.07\, m_Q$. If the decay rate is expressed in terms of the $\overline{MS}$ heavy quark mass $\overline m_Q(m_Q)$ then the scale is $0.12\, m_Q$. We use these results along with the existing calculations for hadronic $τ$ decay to calculate the BLM scale for the nonleptonic decay width and the semileptonic branching ratio. The implications for the value of $|V_{bc}|$ extracted from the inclusive semileptonic $B$ meson decay rate are discussed.

E2 Strength in the Radiative Charmed Baryon Decay

The radiative decay $Σ_Q^* \rightarrow Λ_Qγ$ can have both magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) components. In the heavy quark limit $M_Q\rightarrow\infty$ the transition arises from the spin of the light degrees of freedom changing from $s_l=1$ to $s_l=0$ and hence the E2 contribution vanishes. We compute the leading contribution to the E2 strength in chiral perturbation theory and find that the amplitude is enhanced by a small energy denominator in the chiral limit. This enhancement essentially compensates for the $1/M_c$ suppression that is present in the charm system. We find a mixing ratio of order a few percent dependent upon the $Σ_c^*--Σ_c$ spin symmetry breaking mass difference. The analogous quantity in the b-baryon sector is smaller by a factor of $\sim M_c/M_b$.

HQET and Inclusive Decays of Heavy Hadrons

We discuss the recent developments in inclusive decays of hadrons containing a heavy quark. The subject is approached in a model independent way using an operator product expansion for the time-ordered product of weak currents. We discuss the extraction of the weak mixing angle $|V_{cb}|$ from inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays and the application of these techniques to the endpoint of the $e^-$ spectrum in $B\rightarrow X_ueν$. We also suggest that the comparison of inclusive semileptonic widths for $D_s$ and $D$ mesons will give an indication of the consistency of this approach in charm decays. \bigskip {\it Invited talk presented at the "Intersections of Particle and Nuclear Physics" conference, St Petersburg, Florida, 31 May to 6 June, 1994.}

Strong $Λπ$ Phase Shifts for CP Violation in Weak $Ξ\rightarrow Λπ$ Decay

Strong interaction $Λπ$ phase shifts relevant for the weak nonleptonic decay $Ξ\rightarrow Λπ$ are calculated using baryon chiral perturbation theory. We find in leading order that the S-wave phase shift vanishes and the $J={1 \over 2}$ P-wave phase shift is $-1.7 ^{\rm o} $. The small phase shifts imply that CP violation in this decay will be difficult to observe. Our results follow from chiral $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry.

$Λ(1405)$ Contribution to Kaon-Nucleon Scattering Lengths In Chiral Perturbation Theory

We examine the role of the $Λ(1405)$ in kaon-nucleon scattering lengths using chiral perturbation theory. The leading nonanalytic SU(3) corrections reduce the coupling of the $Λ(1405)$ to $KN$ compared to $Σπ$. S-wave $K^-p$ scattering is the only channel significantly affected by the $ Λ(1405)$ pole which substantially cancels against the leading term fixed by the vector current. This cancellation and the close proximity of the $Λ(1405)$ pole makes this SU(3) correction to $a(K^-p)$ large and at lowest order leaves the sign of $a(K^-p)$ undetermined. We extract two linear combinations of constants appearing at higher order in the chiral expansion from measurements of $KN$ scattering lengths. These constants are important for the offshell behaviour of $KN$ scattering amplitudes that play a central role in kaon condensation. The recent claims about the calculability of these constants are discussed.

Magnetic Moment of the $Λ_c$, $Ξ_{c1}^+$ and $Ξ_{c1}^0$

The magnetic moment of the $Λ_c$, $Ξ_{c1}^+$ and $Ξ_{c1}^0$ vanish when the charm quark mass is taken to infinity because the light degrees of freedom are in a spin zero configuration. The heavy quark spin-symmetry violating contribution from the light degrees of freedom starts at order $1/m_c$, the same order as the contribution from the heavy charm quark. We compute the leading long-distance contribution to the magnetic moments from the spin-symmetry breaking $Σ_c^*-Σ_c $ mass splitting in chiral perturbation theory. These are nonanalytic in the pion mass and arise from calculable one-loop graphs. Further, the difference between the magnetic moments of the charged charmed baryons is independent of the charm quark mass and of the subleading local counterterm.

Long-Distance Contributions to the $Λ_b\rightarrowΛ_ce^-\overlineν_e$ Isgur-Wise Function

The six independent formfactors describing the weak decay \semi\ are determined in terms of one universal function when both the $b$ and $c$ quarks are treated as heavy. The relations between these formfactors are modified by terms suppressed by inverse powers of the charm quark mass. We compute the formally leading long-distance corrections to these relations in chiral perturbation theory both at and away from zero recoil. They arise from the spin-symmetry breaking $Σ_c^* - Σ_c$ mass splitting and are nonanalytic in the pion mass. The correction at the zero-recoil point is found to be $ - (3.4 \pm 2.0) \times 10^{-4} g_3^2$ for a quark model estimate of $m_{Σ_c^*}-m_{Σ_c}$ and where $g_3\sim 1$ is an axial coupling constant. Further, the formfactors that vanish in the heavy quark limit do not receive such corrections.

Hadronic Event Shapes in $B$ Decay

We compute the differential momentum correlation function for hadrons produced in the decay of $B$-mesons. This measure of hadronic event shapes tests the free $b$-quark decay picture for nonleptonic and semileptonic decays of $B$-mesons. Our results can also be applied to $B_s$ and $Λ_b$ decay.

Extracting $|V_{bc}|$, $m_c$ and $m_b$ from Inclusive $D$ and $B$ Decays

Using recent results for nonperturbative contributions to the $B$ and $D$ meson inclusive semileptonic widths, a model independent extraction of $\vbc$, $m_c$ and $m_b$ is made from the experimentally measured $B$ and $D$ lifetimes and semileptonic branching ratios. Constraining the parameters of the HQET at $\CO(1/m_Q^2)$ by the $D$ semileptonic width, $\vbc$ is found to lie in the range $.040<\vbc< 0.057$. The $c$ and $b$ quark masses are not well constrained due to uncertainty in the relevant scale of $α_s$. These results assume the validity of perturbative QCD at the low scales relevant to semileptonic charm decay. Without making this assumption, somewhat less stringent bounds on $V_{bc}$ from $B$ decay alone may be obtained.

Nonperturbative Contributions to the Inclusive Rare Decays $B\to X_sγ$ and $B\to X_s\ell^+\ell^-$

We discuss nonperturbative contributions to the inclusive rare $B$ decays $B\to X_sγ$ and $B\to X_s\ell^+\ell^-$. We employ an operator product expansion and the heavy quark effective theory to compute the leading corrections to the decay rate found in the free quark decay model, which is exact in the limit $m_b\to\infty$. These corrections are of relative order $1/m_b^2$, and may be parameterised in terms of two low-energy parameters. We also discuss the corrections to other observables, such as the average photon energy in $B\to X_sγ$ and the lepton invariant mass spectrum in $B\to X_s\ell^+\ell^-$.

Heavy Quark Fragmentation to Baryons Containing Two Heavy Quarks

We discuss the fragmentation of a heavy quark to a baryon containing two heavy quarks of mass $m_Q\ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$. In this limit the heavy quarks first combine perturbatively into a compact diquark with a radius small compared to $1/Λ_{\rm QCD}$, which interacts with the light hadronic degrees of freedom exactly as does a heavy antiquark. The subsequent evolution of this $QQ$ diquark to a $QQq$ baryon is identical to the fragmentation of a heavy antiquark to a meson. We apply this analysis to the production of baryons of the form $ccq$, $bbq$, and $bcq$.

Flavour Changing Neutral Currents, Weak-Scale Scalars and Rare Top Decays

We examine the decays $t\rightarrow cγ$ and $c Z^0$ in the Standard Model with an extra scalar doublet and no discrete symmetry preventing tree-level flavour changing neutral currents. The Yukawa couplings of the new scalars are assumed to be proportional to fermion masses, evading bounds on FCNC's from the light quark sector. These rare top decays may be visible at the SSC.

Heavy Quark Fragmentation to Polarised Quarkonium

We calculate the polarisation of $ψ$'s and $Υ$'s produced by the fragmentation of heavy quarks. We find that fragmentation to transversely aligned quarkonium is slightly enhanced relative to longitudinally polarised. This net alignment corresponds to a $\sim 5\%$ asymmetry in the angular distribution of leptons produced in the subsequent decay of the quarkonium. We point out that the leading gluon contribution to $ψ$ and $Υ$ production arises from the evolution of the charm quark fragmentation function, rather than from direct gluon fragmentation.

Probing Hadronic Structure with The Decay $Δ\rightarrow Nl^+l^-$

We compute the branching ratio for $Δ\rightarrow Ne^+e^-$ and $Δ\rightarrow Nμ^+μ^-$ in chiral perturbation theory and find that both decays should be observable at CEBAF. With sufficiently low thresholds on the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass a branching ratio of $\sim 10^{-5}$ may be observed for $Δ\rightarrow Ne^+e^-$. For the $Δ\rightarrow Nμ^+μ^-$ decay mode we predict a branching ratio of $3\times 10^{-7}$. The dependence of the M1 and E2 amplitudes on the momentum transfer will provide a useful test of chiral perturbation theory which predicts $\sim 20\%$ variation over the allowed kinematic range.

A Comment on the Strong Interactions of Color-Neutral Technibaryons

We estimate the cross section for the scattering of a slow, color-neutral technibaryon made of colored constituents with nuclei. We find a cross section of order $A^2\ 10^{-45}$ cm$^2$, where $A$ is the atomic number of the nucleus. Even if technibaryons constitute the dark matter in the galactic halo, this is too small to be detected in future underground detectors.

Weak Radiative Hyperon Decays in Chiral Perturbation Theory

The parity-conserving $a$ and parity-violating $b$ amplitudes for weak radiative hyperon decay are studied using chiral perturbation theory. The imaginary parts of $a$ and $b$ are computed using unitarity. The real part of $b$ is dominated by a one-loop infrared divergent graph which is computed. The real part of $a$ has a large theoretical uncertainty and cannot be calculated reliably. Counterterms for the $a$ and $b$ amplitudes are classified using $CPS$ symmetry. The experimental values for decay widths and asymmetries are consistent with theory, with the exception of the asymmetry parameter for the $Σ^+ \rightarrow p γ$ decay.
