The Weak $ΛΛK^0$ Interaction

We calculate the leading contribution to the weak $ΛΛK$ coupling in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, including the SU(3) breaking terms arising at one-loop. This coupling gives the leading one-boson exchange amplitude for the process $ΛΛ\toΛn$ and is an important component in understanding the decay of $ΛΛ$-hypernuclei. We find the S-wave and P-wave amplitudes to be stable under one-loop corrections, but the associated errors become large. We discuss the theoretical errors and potential effects of higher order terms.

Power Counting in Dimensionally Regularized NRQCD

We present a scheme for calculating in NRQCD with consistent power counting in the heavy quark velocity v. As an example, we perform the systematic matching of an external current onto NRQCD at subleading order in v, a calculation relevant for the process e^+e^- -> hadrons near threshold. Consistent velocity power counting in dimensional regularization is achieved by including two distinct gluon fields, one corresponding to gluon radiation and one corresponding to an instantaneous potential. In this scheme power counting is manifest in any gauge, and also holds for non-gauge interactions. The matching conditions for an external vector current in NRQCD are calculated to O(g^2 v^2) and the cancellation of infrared divergences in the matching conditions is shown to require both gluon fields. Some subtleties arising in the matching conditions at subleading order are addressed.

Non-1/m_b^n Power Suppressed Contributions to Inclusive b->s l+ l- Decays

We compute non-perturbative contributions to b->s l+ l- that are not explicitly suppressed by powers of the b-quark mass. They are proportional to lambda_2 and arise from an interference between the free-quark amplitude and higher order terms in the matrix element of a four-quark operator. This correction is found to be small over most of the dalitz plot except near the charm threshold. Unfortunately, the perturbative computation we have performed is invalid near charm threshold and we do not except to see the structure found at lowest order reproduced in the data. We conclude that these non-perturbative contributions do not significantly modify the previous analysis of b->s l+ l-.

Analyticity, Shapes of Semileptonic Form Factors, and B to pi l nu

We give a pedagogical discussion of the physics underlying dispersion relation-derived parameterizations of form factors describing B -> pi l nu and B -> D l nu. Moments of the dispersion relations are shown to provide substantially tighter constraints on the f_+ (t) form factor describing B -> pi l nu than the unweighted dispersion relation alone. Heavy quark spin symmetry relations between the B -> pi l nu and B^* -> pi l nu form factors enables such constraints to be tightened even further.

A Comment on the Radiative Decays of the $Λ(1405)$

We examine the radiative decays of the Lambda (1405) to octet baryons, Lambda + gamma and Sigma + gamma. In the limit of SU(3) symmetry the decay rates for these two modes are related, and we compute the leading correction to the relation in chiral perturbation theory. Such measurements will allow the sign of the strong coupling $g_{Λ^*}$ to be determined. The SU(3) violating radiative decay to the baryon decuplet Sigma* + gamma dominated by one-loop graphs is also discussed. Experiments planned for the Jefferson Laboratory should be able to measure some, if not all, of the processes considered.

Heavy Baryon Mixing in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We discuss the SU(3) and heavy quark spin-symmetry breaking mixing between the Xi_c and Xi'_c charmed baryons. Chromomagnetic hyperfine interactions are the leading source of spin-symmetry breaking and together with the SU(3) breaking mass differences between the lightest pseudo-Goldstone bosons gives the leading contribution to the mixing. Such contributions are computed in chiral perturbation theory and compared to quark model expectations. We also compute the leading contribution to the semileptonic decay Xi_b -> Xi'_c l nu at zero recoil, and find that it is an order of magnitude smaller than naive power counting would suggest. It appears that Xi_b -> Xi'_c l nu is dominated by incalculable counterterms, and we discuss the implications for quark models based on the essential role of hyperfine interactions.

The Delta-Delta Intermediate State in 1S0 Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering From Effective Field Theory

We examine the role of the Delta-Delta intermediate state in low energy NN scattering using effective field theory. Theories both with and without pions are discussed. They are regulated with dimensional regularization and MSbar subtraction. We find that the leading effects of the Delta-Delta state can be absorbed by a redefinition of the contact terms in a theory with nucleons only. It does not remove the requirement of a higher dimension operator to reproduce data out to moderate momentum. The explicit decoupling of the Delta-Delta state is shown for the theory without pions.

SU(3) Breaking in Neutral Current Axial Matrix Elements and the Spin Content of the Nucleon

We examine the effects of SU(3) breaking in the matrix elements of the flavour-diagonal axial currents between octet baryon states and find that SU(3) breaking may be substantial for some matrix elements. We estimate the strange axial matrix element in the proton to be between -0.35 and 0 and the matrix element of the flavour-singlet current in the proton to be between -0.1 and +0.3 from the E-143 measurement g_1(x) . The up-quark content of the $Ξ^-$ is discussed and its implications for nonleptonic weak processes discussed. We also estimate the matrix element of the axial current coupling to the $Z^0$ between all octet baryon states. This may be important for neutrino interactions in dense nuclear environments, where hyperons may play an important role.

Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering from Effective Field Theory

We perform a nonperturbative calculation of the 1S0 NN scattering amplitude using an effective field theory (EFT) expansion. The expansion we advocate is a modification of what has been used previously; it is no a chiral expansion in powers of the pion mass. We use dimensional regularization throughout and the MS-bar subtraction scheme; our final result depends only on physical observables. We show that the EFT expansion of the quantity |p|cot delta(p) converges at momenta much greater than the scale that characterizes the derivative expansion of the EFT Lagrangian. Our conclusions are optimistic about the applicability of an EFT approach to the quantitative study of nuclear matter.

Higher Order QCD Corrections to $b\to c\overline{c}s$

We calculate the ${\cal O}(α_s^2 β_0 )$ corrections to the decay rate $b\rightarrow c\bar c s$. For reasonable values of $m_c/m_b$ this term is of the same order as both the one-loop and $\CO(α_s^2 \log^2 m_W/m_b)$ corrections to the decay rate. For $m_c/m_b=0.3$ the $\CO(α_s^2β_0)$ corrections enhance the rate by $\sim 18\%$ . We also discuss the $\CO(α_s^2β_0)$ corrections to $R_τ$, the $B$ semileptonic branching fraction and the charm multiplicity.

Phenomenology of the $1/m_Q$ Expansion in Inclusive $B$ and $D$ Meson Decays

We apply a recent theoretical analysis of hadronic observables in inclusive semileptonic heavy hadron decays to the phenomenology of $B$ and $D$ mesons. Correlated bounds on the nonperturbative parameters $\barΛ$ and $λ_1$ are derived by considering data from $B$ decays and, independently, data from $D$ decays. The two sets of bounds are found to be consistent with each other. The data from $B$ decays are then are used to extract a lower limit on the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$. We address the issue of the convergence of the perturbative expansions used in the analysis, and compare our bounds on $\barΛ$ and $λ_1$ to lattice and QCD sum rule results. Finally, we argue that a comparison of the analyses of $D$ and $D_s$ decays provides evidence for the applicability of parton-hadron duality in the semileptonic decay of charmed hadrons.

Hadron Spectra for Semileptonic Heavy Quark Decay

We calculate the leading perturbative and power corrections to the hadronic invariant mass and energy spectra in semileptonic heavy hadron decays. We apply our results to the $B$ system. Moments of the invariant mass spectrum, which vanish in the parton model, probe gluon bremsstrahlung and nonperturbative effects. Combining our results with recent data on $B$ meson branching ratios, we obtain a lower bound $\barΛ>410\,{\rm MeV}$ and an upper bound $m_b^{\rm pole}<4.89\,$GeV. The Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale setting procedure suggests that higher order perturbative corrections are small for bottom decay, and even tractable for charm decay.

The Radiative Charmed Baryon Decay $Ξ_{c2}^{0*} \to Ξ_{c1}^0 γ$

V-spin symmetry ($s \leftrightarrow d$ symmetry) forbids the radiative decay $Ξ_{c2}^{0*} \rightarrow Ξ_{c1}^0 γ$ in the SU(3) limit. The quark mass term breaks V-spin symmetry and the leading nonanalytic contribution to the radiative decay amplitude is computable in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The radiative decay branching ratio is determined by the coupling constant $g_2$ and at leading order in chiral perturbation theory is given by $Br(Ξ_{c2}^{0*} \rightarrow Ξ_{c1}^0 γ) = 1.0\times 10^{-3} g_2^2$. Measurement of this branching fraction will determine $|g_2|$.

The Spin-Flavor Dependence of Nuclear Forces from Large-N QCD

We show that nuclear interactions are SU(4) symmetric at leading order in chiral perturbation theory in the large-N limit of QCD. The nucleons and delta resonances form a 20-dimensional representation of SU(4) and we show how Wigner's supermultiplet symmetry SU(4)_{sm}, under which the nucleons transform as a 4-dimensional representation, follows as an accidental low energy symmetry. Exploiting SU(4) symmetry allows one to express the 18 independent leading nucleon, delta interaction operators invariant under spin and isospin symmetries in terms of only two couplings. The three flavor analogue allows one to express the 28 leading octet, decuplet interactions also in terms of only two couplings, which has implications for hypernuclei and strangeness in ``neutron'' stars.

Charmed Baryon Masses in Chiral Perturbation Theory

The masses of the charmed baryons in the ${\bf 6}$ representation of $SU(3)$ obey an equal spacing rule at lowest order in $SU(3)$ breaking, ${\cal O}(m_s)$. We compute the corrections to this relation at order ${\cal O}(m_s^{3/2})$ arising from meson loops using chiral perturbation theory combined with heavy quark symmetry and find them to be small. We also examine the hyperfine interaction responsible for the splitting between the $J^π={3\over 2}^+$ and $J^π={1\over 2}^+$ baryons in the ß representation. The results also hold in the b-baryon sector.

Hyperon Masses in Nuclear Matter

We analyze hyperon and nucleon mass shifts in nuclear matter using chiral perturbation theory. Expressions for the mass shifts that include strong interaction effects at leading order in the density are derived. Corrections to our results are suppressed by powers of the Fermi momentum divided by either the chiral symmetry breaking scale or the nucleon mass. Our work is relevant for neutron stars and for large hypernuclei.

Final State Interactions and CP Violation in $K_L \to π^+ π^- e^+ e^-$

Using chiral perturbation theory we calculate the imaginary parts of the $K_L \rightarrow π^+ π^- e^+ e^-$ form factors that arise from $ππ\rightarrow π^+ π^-$ and $ππ\rightarrow π^+ π^- γ^*$ rescattering. We discuss their influence on CP violating variables in $K_L \rightarrow π^+ π^- e^+ e^-$.

K_L to π^+ π^- e^+ e^-

We calculate all of the form factors for the one-photon, $K_L \rightarrow π^+ π^- γ^* \rightarrow π^+ π^- e^+e^-$ contribution to the $K_L \rightarrow π^+ π^- e^+e^-$ decay amplitude at leading order in chiral perturbation theory. These form factors depend on one unknown constant that is a linear combination of coefficients of local ${\cal O}(p^4)$ operators in the chiral lagrangian for weak radiative kaon decay. We determine the differential rate for $\K$ and also the magnitude of two CP violating observables.
