Socially-Informed Timeline Generation for Complex Events

Existing timeline generation systems for complex events consider only information from traditional media, ignoring the rich social context provided by user-generated content that reveals representative public interests or insightful opinions. We instead aim to generate socially-informed timelines that contain both news article summaries and selected user comments. We present an optimization framework designed to balance topical cohesion between the article and comment summaries along with their informativeness and coverage of the event. Automatic evaluations on real-world datasets that cover four complex events show that our system produces more informative timelines than state-of-the-art systems. In human evaluation, the associated comment summaries are furthermore rated more insightful than editor's picks and comments ranked highly by users.

Query-Focused Opinion Summarization for User-Generated Content

We present a submodular function-based framework for query-focused opinion summarization. Within our framework, relevance ordering produced by a statistical ranker, and information coverage with respect to topic distribution and diverse viewpoints are both encoded as submodular functions. Dispersion functions are utilized to minimize the redundancy. We are the first to evaluate different metrics of text similarity for submodularity-based summarization methods. By experimenting on community QA and blog summarization, we show that our system outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in both automatic evaluation and human evaluation. A human evaluation task is conducted on Amazon Mechanical Turk with scale, and shows that our systems are able to generate summaries of high overall quality and information diversity.

A Piece of My Mind: A Sentiment Analysis Approach for Online Dispute Detection

We investigate the novel task of online dispute detection and propose a sentiment analysis solution to the problem: we aim to identify the sequence of sentence-level sentiments expressed during a discussion and to use them as features in a classifier that predicts the DISPUTE/NON-DISPUTE label for the discussion as a whole. We evaluate dispute detection approaches on a newly created corpus of Wikipedia Talk page disputes and find that classifiers that rely on our sentiment tagging features outperform those that do not. The best model achieves a very promising F1 score of 0.78 and an accuracy of 0.80.

Improving Agreement and Disagreement Identification in Online Discussions with A Socially-Tuned Sentiment Lexicon

We study the problem of agreement and disagreement detection in online discussions. An isotonic Conditional Random Fields (isotonic CRF) based sequential model is proposed to make predictions on sentence- or segment-level. We automatically construct a socially-tuned lexicon that is bootstrapped from existing general-purpose sentiment lexicons to further improve the performance. We evaluate our agreement and disagreement tagging model on two disparate online discussion corpora -- Wikipedia Talk pages and online debates. Our model is shown to outperform the state-of-the-art approaches in both datasets. For example, the isotonic CRF model achieves F1 scores of 0.74 and 0.67 for agreement and disagreement detection, when a linear chain CRF obtains 0.58 and 0.56 for the discussions on Wikipedia Talk pages.

Neural Network-Based Abstract Generation for Opinions and Arguments

We study the problem of generating abstractive summaries for opinionated text. We propose an attention-based neural network model that is able to absorb information from multiple text units to construct informative, concise, and fluent summaries. An importance-based sampling method is designed to allow the encoder to integrate information from an important subset of input. Automatic evaluation indicates that our system outperforms state-of-the-art abstractive and extractive summarization systems on two newly collected datasets of movie reviews and arguments. Our system summaries are also rated as more informative and grammatical in human evaluation.

Intrinsic rotation drive by collisionless trapped electron mode turbulence

Both the parallel residual stress and parallel turbulent acceleration driven by electrostatic collisionsless trapped electron mode (CTEM) turbulence are calculated analytically using gyrokinetic theory. Quasilinear results show that the parallel residual stress contributes an outward flux of co-current rotation for normal magnetic shear and turbulence intensity profile increasing outward. This may induce intrinsic counter-current rotation or flattening of the co-current rotation profile. The parallel turbulent acceleration driven by CTEM turbulence vanishes, due to the absence of a phase shift between density fluctuation and ion pressure fluctuation. This is different from the case of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence, for which the turbulent acceleration can provide co-current drive for normal magnetic shear and turbulence intensity profile increasing outward. Its order of magnitude is predicted to be the same as that of the divergence of the residual stress [Lu Wang and P.H. Diamond, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 265006 (2013)]. A possible connection of these theoretical results to experimental observations of electron cyclotron heating effects on toroidal rotation is discussed.

Generalized Quantum Master Equations In and Out of Equilibrium: When Can One Win?

Generalized quantum master equations (GQMEs) are an important tool in modeling chemical and physical processes. For a large number of problems it has been shown that exact and approximate quantum dynamics methods can be made dramatically more efficient, and in the latter case more accurate, by proceeding via the GQME formalism. However, there are many situations where utilizing the GQME approach seems to offer no advantage over a direct evaluation of the property of interest. Here we provide a more detailed understanding of the conditions under which these methods will offer benefits. In particular, we derive exact expressions for the memory kernel for systems both in and out of equilibrium, and show the conditions under which these expressions will be guaranteed to return a result identical to that obtained from direct simulation. We also show the conditions which approximate methods must satisfy if they are to offer different results when used in conjunction with the GQME formalism. These exact analytical results thus provide new insights as to when proceeding via the GQME approach can improve the accuracy or efficiency of simulations.

Status Report of the DPHEP Collaboration: A Global Effort for Sustainable Data Preservation in High Energy Physics

Data from High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organizational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP and an extended blueprint paper was published in 2012. In July 2014 the DPHEP collaboration was formed as a result of the signature of the Collaboration Agreement by seven large funding agencies (others have since joined or are in the process of acquisition) and in June 2015 the first DPHEP Collaboration Workshop and Collaboration Board meeting took place. This status report of the DPHEP collaboration details the progress during the period from 2013 to 2015 inclusive.

Variational dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model on the basis of multiple Davydov $\mathrm{D}_1$ states

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model is investigated by employing a multitude of the Davydov D$_1$ trial states, also known as the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz. Accuracy in dynamics simulations is improved significantly over the single D$_1$ Ansatz, especially in the weak system-bath coupling regime. The reliability of the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz for various coupling strengths and initial conditions are also systematically examined, with results compared closely with those of the hierarchy equations of motion and the path integral Monte Carlo approaches. In addition, a coherent-incoherent phase crossover in the nonequilibrium dynamics is studied through the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz. The phase diagram is obtained with a critical point $s_{c}=0.4$. For $s_{c}<s<1$, the coherent-to-incoherent crossover occurs at a certain coupling strength, while the coherent state recurs at a much larger coupling strength. For $s<s_{c}$, only the coherent phase exists.

Modeling and Simulation for Fluid-Rotating Structure Interaction

In this paper, we study a dynamic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model for an elastic structure that is immersed and spinning in the fluid. We develop a linear constitutive model to describe the motion of a rotational elastic structure which is suitable for the application of arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method in FSI simulation. Additionally, a novel ALE mapping method is designed to generate the moving fluid mesh while the deformable structure spins in a non-axisymmetric fluid channel. The structure velocity is adopted as the principle unknown to form a monolithic saddle-point system together with fluid velocity and pressure. We discretize the nonlinear saddle-point system with mixed finite element method and Newton's linearization, and prove that the derived saddle-point problem is well-posed. The developed methodology is applied to a self-defined elastic structure and a realistic hydro-turbine under a prescribed angular velocity. Both illustrate the satisfactory numerical results of an elastic structure that is deforming and rotating while interacting with the fluid. The numerical validation is also conducted to demonstrate the modeling consistency.

Geometry of Two-dimensional Self-shrinkers

We prove a local graphical theorem for two-dimensional self-shrinkers away from the origin. As applications, we study the asymptotic behavior of noncompact self-shrinkers with finite genus. Also, we show uniform boundedness on the second fundamental form of two-dimensional noncompact self-shrinkers with bounded mean curvature and uniform locally finite genus.

Nonlinear parallel momentum transport in strong turbulence

Most existing theoretical studies of momentum transport focus on calculating the Reynolds stress based on quasilinear theory, without considering the \emph{nonlinear} momentum flux-$<\tilde{v}_r \tilde{n} \tilde{u}_{\|} >$. However, a recent experiment on TORPEX found that the nonlinear toroidal momentum flux induced by blobs makes a significant contribution as compared to the Reynolds stress [Labit et al., Phys. Plasmas {\bf 18}, 032308 (2011)]. In this work, the nonlinear parallel momentum flux in strong turbulence is calculated by using three dimensional Hasegawa-Mima equation. It is shown that nonlinear diffusivity is smaller than quasilinear diffusivity from Reynolds stress. However, the leading order nonlinear residual stress can be comparable to the quasilinear residual stress, and so could be important to intrinsic rotation in tokamak edge plasmas. A key difference from the quasilinear residual stress is that parallel fluctuation spectrum asymmetry is not required for nonlinear residual stress.

Quantum delocalization of protons in the hydrogen bond network of an enzyme active site

Enzymes utilize protein architectures to create highly specialized structural motifs that can greatly enhance the rates of complex chemical transformations. Here we use experiments, combined with ab initio simulations that exactly include nuclear quantum effects, to show that a triad of strongly hydrogen bonded tyrosine residues within the active site of the enzyme ketosteroid isomerase (KSI) facilitates quantum proton delocalization. This delocalization dramatically stabilizes the deprotonation of an active site tyrosine residue, resulting in a very large isotope effect on its acidity. When an intermediate analog is docked, it is incorporated into the hydrogen bond network, giving rise to extended quantum proton delocalization in the active site. These results shed light on the role of nuclear quantum effects in the hydrogen bond network that stabilizes the reactive intermediate of KSI, and the behavior of protons in biological systems containing strong hydrogen bonds.

A Nearly Optimal Multigrid Method for General Unstructured Grids

In this paper, we develop a multigrid method on unstructured shape-regular grids. For a general shape-regular unstructured grid of ${\cal O}(N)$ elements, we present a construction of an auxiliary coarse grid hierarchy on which a geometric multigrid method can be applied together with a smoothing on the original grid by using the auxiliary space preconditioning technique. Such a construction is realized by a cluster tree which can be obtained in ${\cal O}(N\log N)$ operations for a grid of $N$ elements. This tree structure in turn is used for the definition of the grid hierarchy from coarse to fine. For the constructed grid hierarchy we prove that the convergence rate of the multigrid preconditioned CG for an elliptic PDE is $1 - {\cal O}({1}/{\log N})$. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical bounds and show that the total complexity is in ${\cal O}(N\log N)$.

Graphdiyne-metal contacts and graphdiyne transistors

Graphdiyne is prepared on metal surface, and making devices out of it also inevitably involves contact with metals. Using density functional theory with dispersion correction, we systematically studied for the first time the interfacial properties of graphdiyne contacting with a series of metals (Al, Ag, Cu, Au, Ir, Pt, Ni, and Pd). Graphdiyne is in an n-type Ohmic or quasi-Ohmic contact with Al, Ag, and Cu, while it is in a Schottky contact with Au (at source/drain interface), Pd, Pt, Ni, and Ir (at source/drain-channel interface), with high Schottky barrier heights of 0.39, 0.21 (n-type), 0.30, 0.41, and 0.45 (p-type) eV, respectively. A graphdiyne field effect transistor (FET) with Al electrodes is simulated by using quantum transport calculations. This device exhibits an on-off ratio up to 104 and a very large on-state current of 1.3 * 104 mA/mm in a 10 nm channel length. Thus, a new prospect is opened up for graphdiyne in high performance nanoscale devices.

Quantum fluctuations and isotope effects in ab initio descriptions of water

Nuclear quantum effects, such as zero-point energy and tunneling, cause significant changes to the structure and dynamics of hydrogen bonded systems such as liquid water. However, due to the current inability to simulate liquid water using an exact description of its electronic structure, the interplay between nuclear and electronic quantum effects remains unclear. Here we use simulations that incorporate the quantum mechanical nature of both the nuclei and electrons to provide a fully ab initio determination of the particle quantum kinetic energies, free energy change upon exchanging hydrogen for deuterium and the isotope fractionation ratio in water. These properties, which selectively probe the quantum nature of the nuclear degrees of freedom, allow us to make direct comparison to recent experiments and elucidate how electronic exchange and correlation and nuclear quantum fluctuations determine the structure of the hydrogen bond in water.

Tuning Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Early Transition Metal Dichalcogenides via Tensile Strain

We have performed a systematic first-principles study of the effect of tensile strains on the electronic properties of early transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers MX2 (M = Sc, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, Cr; X = S, Se, and Te). Our density-functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the tensile strain can significantly affect the electronic properties of many early TMDCs in general and the electronic bandgap in particular. For group IVB TMDCs (TiX2, ZrX2, HfX2), the bandgap increases with the tensile strain, but for ZrX2 and HfX2 (X=S, Se), the bandgap starts to decrease at strain 6% to 8%. For the group-VB TMDCs (TaX2), the tensile strain can either induce the ferromagnetism or enhance the existing ferromagnetism. For the group-VIB TMDCs (CrX2) the direct-to-indirect bandgap transition is seen upon application of the tensile strain, except CrTe2 whose bandgap decreases with the tensile strain even though the direct character of its bandgap is retained. Lastly, for the group-IIIB TMDCs (ScX2) in the T metallic phase, we find that the tensile strain has little effect on their electronic and magnetic properties. Our study suggests that strain engineering is an effective approach to modify electronic and magnetic properties of most early TMDC monolayers, thereby opening an alternative way for future optoelectronic and spintronic applications.

A Remark on a Uniqueness Property of High Multiplicity Tangent Flows in Dimension Three

In this note, we combine the work of Ilmanen and of Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi to observe a uniqueness property for tangent flows at the first singular time of a smooth mean curvature flow of a closed surface in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. Specifically, if, at a fixed singular point, one tangent flow is a positive integer multiple of a shrinking plane, cylinder or sphere, then, modulo rotations, all tangent flows at the point are the same.
