Hybrid Force Motion Control with Estimated Surface Normal for Manufacturing Applications

This paper proposes a hybrid force-motion framework that utilizes real-time surface normal updates. The surface normal is estimated via a novel method that leverages force sensing measurements and velocity commands to compensate the friction bias. This approach is critical for robust execution of precision force-controlled tasks in manufacturing, such as thermoplastic tape replacement that traces surfaces or paths on a workpiece subject to uncertainties deviated from the model. We formulated the proposed method and implemented the framework in ROS2 environment. The approach was validated using kinematic simulations and a hardware platform. Specifically, we demonstrated the approach on a 7-DoF manipulator equipped with a force/torque sensor at the end-effector.

A Bimanual Teleoperation Framework for Light Duty Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator Systems

In an effort to lower the barrier to entry in underwater manipulation, this paper presents an open-source, user-friendly framework for bimanual teleoperation of a light-duty underwater vehicle-manipulator system (UVMS). This framework allows for the control of the vehicle along with two manipulators and their end-effectors using two low-cost haptic devices. The UVMS kinematics are derived in order to create an independent resolved motion rate controller for each manipulator, which optimally controls the joint positions to achieve a desired end-effector pose. This desired pose is computed in real-time using a teleoperation controller developed to process the dual haptic device input from the user. A physics-based simulation environment is used to implement this framework for two example tasks as well as provide data for error analysis of user commands. The first task illustrates the functionality of the framework through motion control of the vehicle and manipulators using only the haptic devices. The second task is to grasp an object using both manipulators simultaneously, demonstrating precision and coordination using the framework. The framework code is available at https://github.com/stevens-armlab/uvms_bimanual_sim.

Where do they come from? Identification of globular cluster escaped stars

Globular clusters (GCs), as old as our Galaxy, constantly lose their members to the field as they cross through the Milky Way (MW). These GC escaped stars (or escapees) are suggested to contribute significantly to the MW halo. If a star has left the host GC a long time ago, chemical finger prints, e.g., N enrichment, may reveal its origin. In this work, we aim to establish dynamical connections between N-rich field stars recently identified by LAMOST and the existing MW GCs. By constructing the full action distribution, and combining with metallicity, we found 29 potential GC progenitors for 15 N-rich field stars. Particularly, some of them may be related to MW accretion events. On the other hand, if a star recently left its host GC via tidal evaporation, it still maintain the kinematic properties of the cluster. Here we identify extra-tidal candidates based on their spatial locations, proper motions (PMs), and their position on color-magnitude-diagrams (CMDs). We successfully identified more than 1600 extra-tidal candidates in the vicinity of six Gaia-Enceladus (GE)-related GCs (i.e., NGC 1851, NGC 1904, NGC 6205, NGC 6341, NGC 6779, NGC 7089). The density map of the extra-tidal candidates is confirmed to be an efficient way to find extra-tidal structures. The possible two density peaks at opposite directions of the inner boundary is a good indicator for long stellar stream. Among 95 extra-tidal candidates with spectroscopic radial velocities and metallicity, 54 of them are confirmed to be GC escaped stars, as they share similar properties as host GCs. These extra-tidal candidates are ideal targets for follow-up spectroscopic observation, as it greatly improves the scientific outcome. Once statistically significant number of spectroscopic radial velocities and metallicities are available, the GC dynamical evolution (e.g., mass loss, rotation) can be carefully investigated.

Mathematics of multi-agent learning systems at the interface of game theory and artificial intelligence

Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are two fields that, at first glance, might seem distinct, but they have notable connections and intersections. The former focuses on the evolution of behaviors (or strategies) in a population, where individuals interact with others and update their strategies based on imitation (or social learning). The more successful a strategy is, the more prevalent it becomes over time. The latter, meanwhile, is centered on machine learning algorithms and (deep) neural networks. It is often from a single-agent perspective but increasingly involves multi-agent environments, in which intelligent agents adjust their strategies based on feedback and experience, somewhat akin to the evolutionary process yet distinct in their self-learning capacities. In light of the key components necessary to address real-world problems, including (i) learning and adaptation, (ii) cooperation and competition, (iii) robustness and stability, and altogether (iv) population dynamics of individual agents whose strategies evolve, the cross-fertilization of ideas between both fields will contribute to the advancement of mathematics of multi-agent learning systems, in particular, to the nascent domain of ``collective cooperative intelligence'' bridging evolutionary dynamics and multi-agent reinforcement learning.

Dual-sided transparent display

In the past decade, display technology has been reimagined to meet the needs of the virtual world. By mapping information onto a scene through a transparent display, users can simultaneously visualize both the real world and layers of virtual elements. However, advances in augmented reality (AR) technology have primarily focused on wearable gear or personal devices. Here we present a single display capable of delivering visual information to observers positioned on either side of the transparent device. This dual-sided display system employs a polymer stabilized liquid crystal waveguide technology to achieve a transparency window of 65% while offering active-matrix control. An early-stage prototype exhibits full-color information via time-sequential processing of a red-green-blue (RGB) light-emitting diode (LED) strip. The dual-sided display provides a perspective on transparent mediums as display devices for human-centric and service-related experiences that can support both enhanced bi-directional user interactions and new media platforms.

Adaptive coordination promotes collective cooperation in repeated social dilemmas

Direct reciprocity based on the repeated prisoner's dilemma has been intensively studied. Most theoretical investigations have concentrated on memory-$1$ strategies, a class of elementary strategies just reacting to the previous-round outcomes. Though the properties of "All-or-None" strategies ($AoN_K$) have been discovered, simulations just confirmed the good performance of $AoN_K$ of very short memory lengths. It remains unclear how $AoN_K$ strategies would fare when players have access to longer rounds of history information. We construct a theoretical model to investigate the performance of the class of $AoN_K$ strategies of varying memory length $K$. We rigorously derive the payoffs and show that $AoN_K$ strategies of intermediate memory length $K$ are most prevalent, while strategies of larger memory lengths are less competent. Larger memory lengths make it hard for $AoN_K$ strategies to coordinate, and thus inhibiting their mutual reciprocity. We then propose the adaptive coordination strategy combining tolerance and $AoN_K$' coordination rule. This strategy behaves like $AoN_K$ strategy when coordination is not sufficient, and tolerates opponents' occasional deviations by still cooperating when coordination is sufficient. We found that the adaptive coordination strategy wins over other classic memory-$1$ strategies in various typical competition environments, and stabilizes the population at high levels of cooperation, suggesting the effectiveness of high level adaptability in resolving social dilemmas. Our work may offer a theoretical framework for exploring complex strategies using history information, which are different from traditional memory-$n$ strategies.

Nef cones of fiber products and an application to the Cone Conjecture

We prove a decomposition theorem for the nef cone of smooth fiber products over curves, subject to the necessary condition that their Néron--Severi space decomposes. We apply it to describe the nef cone of so-called Schoen varieties, which are the higher dimensional analogues of the Calabi--Yau threefolds constructed by Schoen. Schoen varieties give rise to Calabi--Yau pairs, and in each dimension at least three, there exist Schoen varieties with non-polyhedral nef cone. We prove the Kawamata--Morrison--Totaro Cone Conjecture for the nef cones of Schoen varieties, which generalizes the work by Grassi and Morrison.

Stencil Matrixization

Current architectures are now equipped with matrix computation units designed to enhance AI and high-performance computing applications. Within these architectures, two fundamental instruction types are matrix multiplication and vector outer product, with the latter being lighter due to its vector inputs. This characteristic not only allows for the development of flexible algorithms beyond dense linear algebra computations but also offers greater potential for implementation optimization. Stencil computations, commonly found in scientific and engineering applications, involve nested loops. This paper introduces a novel stencil algorithm leveraging vector outer products. Unlike previous approaches, this algorithm emerges from the stencil definition in scatter mode and is initially formulated using vector outer product expressions. The implementation integrates a series of optimizations to enhance memory reference patterns, execution pipeline efficiency, and data reuse. These optimizations consider various algorithmic options and data sharing among input vectors. Evaluation conducted on a simulator demonstrates that our proposed design achieves significant speedup compared to vectorized stencil algorithms.

Online Distributed Optimization with Clipped Stochastic Gradients: High Probability Bound of Regrets

In this paper, the problem of distributed optimization is studied via a network of agents. Each agent only has access to a stochastic gradient of its own objective function in the previous time, and can communicate with its neighbors via a network. To handle this problem, an online distributed clipped stochastic gradient descent algorithm is proposed. Dynamic regrets are used to capture the performance of the algorithm. Particularly, the high probability bounds of regrets are analyzed when the stochastic gradients satisfy the heavy-tailed noise condition. For the convex case, the offline benchmark of the dynamic regret is to seek the minimizer of the objective function each time. Under mild assumptions on the graph connectivity, we prove that the dynamic regret grows sublinearly with high probability under a certain clipping parameter. For the non-convex case, the offline benchmark of the dynamic regret is to find the stationary point of the objective function each time. We show that the dynamic regret grows sublinearly with high probability if the variation of the objective function grows within a certain rate. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

XUAT-Copilot: Multi-Agent Collaborative System for Automated User Acceptance Testing with Large Language Model

In past years, we have been dedicated to automating user acceptance testing (UAT) process of WeChat Pay, one of the most influential mobile payment applications in China. A system titled XUAT has been developed for this purpose. However, there is still a human-labor-intensive stage, i.e, test scripts generation, in the current system. Therefore, in this paper, we concentrate on methods of boosting the automation level of the current system, particularly the stage of test scripts generation. With recent notable successes, large language models (LLMs) demonstrate significant potential in attaining human-like intelligence and there has been a growing research area that employs LLMs as autonomous agents to obtain human-like decision-making capabilities. Inspired by these works, we propose an LLM-powered multi-agent collaborative system, named XUAT-Copilot, for automated UAT. The proposed system mainly consists of three LLM-based agents responsible for action planning, state checking and parameter selecting, respectively, and two additional modules for state sensing and case rewriting. The agents interact with testing device, make human-like decision and generate action command in a collaborative way. The proposed multi-agent system achieves a close effectiveness to human testers in our experimental studies and gains a significant improvement of Pass@1 accuracy compared with single-agent architecture. More importantly, the proposed system has launched in the formal testing environment of WeChat Pay mobile app, which saves a considerable amount of manpower in the daily development work.

Discovery and Timing of Millisecond Pulsars in the Globular Cluster M5 (NGC 5904) with FAST and Arecibo

We report on a comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the pulsars in the globular cluster (GC) M5, including the discovery of M5G, a new compact non-eclipsing "black widow" pulsar. Thanks to the analysis of 34 years of radio data taken with the FAST and Arecibo telescopes, we obtained new phase-connected timing solutions for four pulsars in the clusters and improved those of the other three known pulsars. These have resulted in, among other things: a) much improved proper motions for five pulsars, with transverse velocities that are smaller than their respective escape velocities; b) 3-sigma and 1.5-sigma detections of Shapiro delays in M5F and M5D, respectively; c) greatly improved measurement of the periastron advance in M5B, whose value of 0.01361(6) implies that M5B is still likely to be a heavy neutron star. The binary pulsars M5D, E and F are confirmed to be in low-eccentricity binary systems, the low-mass companions of which are newly identified to be He white dwarfs using Hubble Space Telescope data. Four pulsars are also found to be associated with X-ray sources. Similarly to the eclipsing pulsar M5C, M5G shows little or no non-thermal X-ray emission, indicative of weak synchrotron radiation produced by intra-binary shocks. All the seven pulsars known in M5 have short spin periods and five are in binary systems with low orbital eccentricities. These characteristics differ from the overall GC pulsar population, but confirm the expectations for the pulsar population in a cluster with a small rate of stellar encounters per binary system.

Evolutionary dynamics in repeated optional games

Direct reciprocity facilitates the evolution of cooperation when individuals interact repeatedly. Most previous studies on direct reciprocity implicitly assume compulsory interactions. Yet, interactions are often voluntary in human societies. Here, we consider repeated optional games, where individuals can freely opt out of each interaction and rejoin later. We find that voluntary participation greatly promotes cooperation in repeated interactions, even in harsh situations where repeated compulsory games and one-shot optional games yield low cooperation rates. Moreover, we theoretically characterize all Nash equilibria that support cooperation among reactive strategies, and identify three novel classes of strategies that are error-robust, readily become equilibria, and dominate in the evolutionary dynamics. The success of these strategies hinges on the effect of opt-out: it not only avoids trapping in mutual defection but also poses additional threats to intentional defectors. Our work highlights that voluntary participation is a simple and effective mechanism to enhance cooperation in repeated interactions.

Compact Binary Formation in Open Star Clusters I: High Formation Efficiency of Gaia BHs and Their Multiplicities

Gaia BHs, black hole (BH) binaries discovered from database of an astrometric telescope Gaia, pose a question to the standard binary evolution model. We have assessed if Gaia BHs can be formed through dynamical capture in open clusters rather than through isolated binary evolution. We have performed gravitational $N$-body simulations of $100$ open clusters with $10^5 M_\odot$ in total for each metallicity $Z=0.02$, $0.01$, and $0.005$. We have discovered one Gaia BH-like binary escaping from an open cluster, and found that the formation efficiency of Gaia BHs in open clusters ($\sim 10^{-5} M_\odot^{-1}$) is larger than in isolated binaries ($\sim 10^{-8} M_\odot^{-1}$) by 3 orders of magnitude. The Gaia BH-like binary is the inner binary of a triple star system. Gaia BHs can have tertiary stars frequently, if they are formed in open clusters. Combining additional $N$-body simulations with 8000 open clusters with $8 \times 10^6 M_\odot$, we have estimated the number of Gaia BHs in the Milky Way disk to $10^4 - 10^5$ (depending on the definitions of Gaia BHs), large enough for the number of Gaia BHs discovered so far. Our results indicate that the discoveries of Gaia BHs do not request the reconstruction of the standard binary evolution model, and that Gaia BHs are a probe for the dynamics of open clusters already evaporated.

On the identification of N-rich metal-poor field stars with future China space station telescope

During the long term evolution of globular clusters (GCs), a part of member stars are lost to the field. The recently found nitrogen-rich (N-rich) metal-poor field stars are promising candidates of these GC escapees, since N enhancement is the fingerprint of chemically enhanced populations in GCs. In this work, we discuss the possibility of identifying N-rich metal-poor field stars with the upcoming China space station telescope (CSST). We focus on the main survey camera with NUV, u, g, r, i, z, y filters and slitless spectrograph with a resolution about 200. The combination of UV sensitive equipment and prominent N-related molecular lines in the UV band bodes well for the identification: the color-color diagram of (u-g) versus (g-r) is capable of separating N-rich field stars and normal halo stars, if metallicity can be estimated without using the information of u-band photometry. Besides, the synthetic spectra show that a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 is sufficient to identify N-rich field stars. In the near future, a large sample of N-rich field stars found by CSST, combined with state-of-the-art N-body simulations will be crucial to decipher the GC-Galaxy co-evolution.

CCAE: A Corpus of Chinese-based Asian Englishes

Language models have been foundations in various scenarios of NLP applications, but it has not been well applied in language variety studies, even for the most popular language like English. This paper represents one of the few initial efforts to utilize the NLP technology in the paradigm of World Englishes, specifically in creating a multi-variety corpus for studying Asian Englishes. We present an overview of the CCAE -- Corpus of Chinese-based Asian English, a suite of corpora comprising six Chinese-based Asian English varieties. It is based on 340 million tokens in 448 thousand web documents from six regions. The ontology of data would make the corpus a helpful resource with enormous research potential for Asian Englishes (especially for Chinese Englishes for which there has not been a publicly accessible corpus yet so far) and an ideal source for variety-specific language modeling and downstream tasks, thus setting the stage for NLP-based World Englishes studies. And preliminary experiments on this corpus reveal the practical value of CCAE. Finally, we make CCAE available at \href{https://huggingface.co/datasets/CCAE/CCAE-Corpus}{this https URL}.

Temporal networks provide a unifying understanding of the evolution of cooperation

Understanding the evolution of cooperation in structured populations represented by networks is a problem of long research interest, and a most fundamental and widespread property of social networks related to cooperation phenomena is that the node's degree (i.e., number of edges connected to the node) is heterogeneously distributed. Previous results indicate that static heterogeneous (i.e., degree-heterogeneous) networks promote cooperation in stationarity compared to static regular (i.e., degree-homogeneous) networks if equilibrium dynamics starting from many cooperators and defectors is employed. However, the above conclusion reverses if we employ non-equilibrium stochastic processes to measure the fixation probability for cooperation, i.e., the probability that a single cooperator successfully invades a population. Here we resolve this conundrum by analyzing the fixation of cooperation on temporal (i.e., time-varying) networks. We theoretically prove and numerically confirm that on both synthetic and empirical networks, contrary to the case of static networks, temporal heterogeneous networks can promote cooperation more than temporal regular networks in terms of the fixation probability of cooperation. Given that the same conclusion is known for the equilibrium fraction of cooperators on temporal networks, the present results provide a unified understanding of the effect of temporal degree heterogeneity on promoting cooperation across two main analytical frameworks, i.e., equilibrium and non-equilibrium ones.

Wild automorphisms of compact complex spaces of lower dimensions

An automorphism of a compact complex space is called wild in the sense of Reichstein--Rogalski--Zhang if there is no non-trivial proper invariant analytic subset. We show that a compact complex surface admitting a wild automorphism must be a complex torus or an Inoue surface of certain type, and this wild automorphism has zero entropy. As a by-product of our argument, we obtain new results about the automorphism groups of Inoue surfaces. We also study wild automorphisms of compact Kähler threefolds or fourfolds, and generalise the results of Oguiso--Zhang from the projective case to the Kähler case.

The influence of black holes on the binary population of the globular cluster Palomar 5

The discovery of stellar-mass black holes (BHs) in globular clusters (GCs) raises the possibility of long-term retention of BHs within GCs. These BHs influence various astrophysical processes, including merger-driven gravitational waves and the formation of X-ray binaries. They also impact cluster dynamics by heating and creating low-density cores. Previous N-body models suggested that Palomar 5, a low-density GC with long tidal tails, may contain more than 100 BHs. To test this scenario, we conduct N-body simulations of Palomar 5 with primordial binaries to explore the influence of BHs on binary populations and the stellar mass function. Our results show that primordial binaries have minimal effect on the long-term evolution. In dense clusters with BHs, the fraction of wide binaries with periods >$10^5$ days decreases, and the disruption rate is independent of the initial period distribution. Multi-epoch spectroscopic observations of line-of-sight velocity changes can detect most bright binaries with periods below $10^4$ days, significantly improving velocity dispersion measurements. Four BH-MS binaries in the model with BHs suggests their possible detection through the same observation method. Including primordial binaries leads to a flatter inferred mass function because of spatially unresolved binaries, leading to a better match of the observations than models without binaries, particularly in Palomar 5's inner region. Future observations should focus on the cluster velocity dispersion and binaries with periods of $10^4-10^5$ days in Palomar 5's inner and tail regions to constrain BH existence.
