Higher-order photonic topological states in surface-wave photonic crystals

Photonic topological states have revolutionized our understanding on the propagation and scattering of light. Recent discovery of higher-order photonic topological insulators opens an emergent horizon for zero-dimensional topological corner states. However, the previous realizations of higher-order photonic topological insulators suffer from either a limited operational frequency range due to the lumped components involved or a bulky structure with a large footprint, which are unfavorable for future integrated photonics. To overcome these limitations, we hereby experimentally demonstrate a planar surface-wave photonic crystal realization of two-dimensional higher-order topological insulators. The surface-wave photonic crystals exhibit a very large bulk bandgap (a bandwidth of 28%) due to multiple Bragg scatterings and host one-dimensional gapped edge states described by massive Dirac equations. The topology of those higher-dimensional photonic bands leads to the emergence of zero-dimensional corner states, which provide a route toward robust cavity modes for scalable, integrated photonic chips and an interface for the control of light-matter interaction.

Detailed polarization measurements of the prompt emission of five Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gamma-ray bursts are the strongest explosions in the Universe since the Big Bang, believed to be produced either in forming black holes at the end of massive star evolution or merging of compact objects. Spectral and timing properties of gamma-ray bursts suggest that the observed bright gamma-rays are produced in the most relativistic jets in the Universe; however, the physical properties, especially the structure and magnetic topologies in the jets are still not well known, despite several decades of studies. It is widely believed that precise measurements of the polarization properties of gamma-ray bursts should provide crucial information on the highly relativistic jets. As a result there have been many reports of gamma-ray burst polarization measurements with diverse results, see, however many such measurements suffered from substantial uncertainties, mostly systematic. After the first successful measurements by the GAP and COSI instruments, here we report a statistically meaningful sample of precise polarization measurements, obtained with the dedicated gamma-ray burst polarimeter, POLAR onboard China's Tiangong-2 spacelab. Our results suggest that the gamma-ray emission is at most polarized at a level lower than some popular models have predicted; although our results also show intrapulse evolution of the polarization angle. This indicates that the low polarization degrees could be due to an evolving polarization angle during a gamma-ray burst.

Realization of a three-dimensional photonic topological insulator

Confining photons in a finite volume is in high demand in modern photonic devices. This motivated decades ago the invention of photonic crystals, featured with a photonic bandgap forbidding light propagation in all directions. Recently, inspired by the discoveries of topological insulators (TIs), the confinement of photons with topological protection has been demonstrated in two-dimensional (2D) photonic structures known as photonic TIs, with promising applications in topological lasers and robust optical delay lines. However, a fully three-dimensional (3D) topological photonic bandgap has never before been achieved. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a 3D photonic TI with an extremely wide (> 25% bandwidth) 3D topological bandgap. The sample consists of split-ring resonators (SRRs) with strong magneto-electric coupling and behaves as a 'weak TI', or a stack of 2D quantum spin Hall insulators. Using direct field measurements, we map out both the gapped bulk bandstructure and the Dirac-like dispersion of the photonic surface states, and demonstrate robust photonic propagation along a non-planar surface. Our work extends the family of 3D TIs from fermions to bosons and paves the way for applications in topological photonic cavities, circuits, and lasers in 3D geometries.

Valley-Hall photonic topological insulators with dual-band kink states

Extensive researches have revealed that valley, a binary degree of freedom (DOF), can be an excellent candidate of information carrier. Recently, valley DOF has been introduced into photonic systems, and several valley-Hall photonic topological insulators (PTIs) have been experimentally demonstrated. However, in the previous valley-Hall PTIs, topological kink states only work at a single frequency band, which limits potential applications in multiband waveguides, filters, communications, and so on. To overcome this challenge, here we experimentally demonstrate a valley-Hall PTI, where the topological kink states exist at two separated frequency bands, in a microwave substrate-integrated circuitry. Both the simulated and experimental results demonstrate the dual-band valley-Hall topological kink states are robust against the sharp bends of the internal domain wall with negligible inter-valley scattering. Our work may pave the way for multi-channel substrate-integrated photonic devices with high efficiency and high capacity for information communications and processing.

Superconductivity, Electronic Phase Diagram and Pressure Effect in Sr_{1-x}Pr_{x}FBiS_{2}

Based on a combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transports, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and pressure effect measurements, we report a series of BiS$_{2}$-based Sr$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$FBiS$_{2}$ superconductors with the maximum $T_c$ of 2.7 K for $x =$ 0.5 at ambient pressure. Superconductivity can be only observed at 0.4 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7 while the normal state resistivity shows the semiconducting-like behaviors. $χ(T)$ displays the low superconducting shielding volume fractions and $C(T)$ does not exhibit distinguishable anomaly around $T_c$, suggesting a filamentary superconductivity in the Pr-doped polycrystalline samples. By varying doping concentrations, an electrnoic phase diagram can thus be established. Upon applying pressure on the optimal doping Sr$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2}$ system, $T_c$ is abruptly enhanced, reaches 8.5 K at a critical pressure of $P_c =$ 1.5 GPa and remains a slight increase up to 9.7 K up to 2.5 GPa. Accompanied with the enhancement of superconductivity from the low-$T_c$ phase to the high-$T_c$ phase, the normal state undergoes a semiconductor-to-metal transition under pressure. The scenario can be linked to the enhancement of orbital overlap of Bi-6p and S-p, contributing to the bulk superconductivity above $P_c$. Phase diagram for Sr$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2}$ is also obtained.

ALMA Observations of Ethyl Formate toward Orion KL

Orion KL is one of the prime templates of astrochemical and prebiotic chemical studies. We wish to explore more organic molecules with increasing complexity in this region. In particular, we have searched for one of the most complex organic molecules detected in space so far, ethyl formate (C$_{2}$H$_{5}$OCHO). This species is the next step in chemical complexity after the simplest member of esters (methyl formate, CH$_{3}$OCHO). The mechanisms leading to its formation are still poorly known. We have used high angular resolution ($\sim$ 1.$^{\prime\prime}$5) ALMA observations covering a large bandwidth from 214 to 247 GHz. We have detected 82 unblended lines of C$_{2}$H$_{5}$OCHO (49 and 33 of the trans and gauche conformers, respectively). The line images showed that C$_{2}$H$_{5}$OCHO arises mainly from the compact ridge and the hot core-southwest regions. The derived rotational temperatures and column densities are 122 $\pm$ 34 K, (0.9 $\pm$ 0.3) $\times$ 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the hot core-SW, and 103 $\pm$ 13 K, (0.6 $\pm$ 0.3) $\times$ 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ for the compact ridge. The comparison of spatial distribution and abundance ratios with chemically related molecules (methyl formate, ethanol and formic acid) indicates that C$_{2}$H$_{5}$OCHO is likely formed on the surface of dust grains by addition of CH$_{3}$ to functional-group radicals (CH$_{2}$OCHO) derived from methyl formate (CH$_{3}$OCHO).

Automated segmentaiton and classification of arterioles and venules using Cascading Dilated Convolutional Neural Networks

The change of retinal vasculature is an early sign of many vascular and systematic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. Different behaviors of retinal arterioles and venules form an important metric to measure the disease severity. Therefore, an accurate classification of arterioles and venules is of great necessity. In this work, we propose a novel architecture of deep convolutional neural network for segmenting and classifying arterioles and venules on retinal fundus images. This network takes the original color fundus image as inputs and multi-class labels as outputs. We adopt the encoding-decoding structure (Unet) as the backbone network of our proposed model. To improve the classification accuracy, we develop a special encoding path that couples InceptionV4 modules and Cascading Dilated Convolutions (CDCs) on top of the backbone network. The model is thus able to extract and fuse high-level semantic features from multi-scale receptive fields. The proposed method has outperformed the previous state-of-the-art method on DRIVE dataset with an accuracy of 0.955 $\pm$ 0.002.

Real-time programmable mode-locked fiber laser with a human-like algorithm

Nonlinear polarized evolution-based passively mode-locked fiber lasers with ultrafast and high peak power pulses are a powerful tool for engineering applications and research. However, their sensitivity to polarization limits their widespread application. To address this, automatic mode-locking immune to environmental disturbances is attracting more concerns. An experimental demonstration of the first real-time programmable mode-locked fiber laser is presented, which is enabled by our proposed human-like algorithm. It combines human logic with a machine's speed, computing capability, and precision. The laser automatically locks onto multiple operation regimes such as fundamental mode-locking, harmonic mode-locking, Q-switching, and even Q-switched mode-locking without physically altering its structure. The average initial mode-locking times (with randomly-assigned original polarization states and recover time from detachment under 10 successive experiments) are only 3.1 s and 58.9 ms. We believe this intelligent laser's superior performance can find practical applications in engineering and scientific research.

Vectorial nonlinear optical generation

Nonlinear optical generation has been a well-established way to realize frequency conversion in nonlinear optics, whereas previous studies were just focusing on the scalar light fields. Here we report a concise yet efficient experiment to realize frequency conversion from vector fields to vector fields based on the vectorial nonlinear optical process, e.g., the second-harmonic generation. Our scheme is based on two cascading type-I phase-matching BBO crystals, whose fast axes are configured elaborately to be perpendicular to each other. Without loss of generality, we take the full Poincaré beams as the vectorial light fields in our experiment, and visualize the structured features of vectorial second-harmonic fields by using Stokes polarimetry. The interesting doubling effect of polarization topological index, i.e., a low-order full Poincaré beam is converted to a high-order one are demonstrated. However, polarization singularities of both C-points and L-lines are found to keep invariant during the SHG process. Our scheme can be straightforwardly generalized to other nonlinear optical effects. Our scheme can offer a deeper understanding on the interaction of vectorial light with media and may find important applications in optical imaging, optical communication and quantum information science.

Centralized adaptive traffic control strategy design across multiple intersections based on vehicle path flows: An approximated Lagrangian decomposition approach

In this paper, we first present a centralized traffic control model based on the emerging dynamic path flows. This new model in essence views the whole target network as one integral piece in which traffic propagates based on traffic flow dynamics, vehicle paths, and traffic control. In light of this centralized traffic control concept, most requirements for the existing traffic control coordination will be dropped in the optimal traffic control operations, such as the common cycle length or offsets. Instead, the optimal traffic control strategy across intersections will be highly adaptive over time to minimize the total travel time and it can also prevent any short-term traffic congestions according to the space-time characteristics of vehicle path flows. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is then presented to model the propagations of path flows given a centralized traffic control strategy. Secondly, a new approximated Lagrangian decomposition framework is presented. Solving the proposed MILP model with the traditional Lagrangian decomposition approach faces the leveraging challenge between the problem tractability after decomposition and computing complexity. To address this issue, we propose an approximate Lagrangian decomposition framework in which the target problem is reformulated into an approximated problem by constructing its complicating attributes into the objective function instead of in constraints to reduce the computing complexity. The computing efficiency loss of the objective function can be mitigated via multiple advanced computing techniques. With the proposed approximated approach, the upper bound and tight lower bound can be obtained via two customized dynamic network loading models. In the end, one demonstrative and one real-world example are illustrated to show the validness, robustness, and scalability of the new approach.

Unsupervised Learnable Sinogram Inpainting Network (SIN) for Limited Angle CT reconstruction

In this paper, we propose a sinogram inpainting network (SIN) to solve limited-angle CT reconstruction problem, which is a very challenging ill-posed issue and of great interest for several clinical applications. A common approach to the problem is an iterative reconstruction algorithm with regularization term, which can suppress artifacts and improve image quality, but requires high computational cost. The starting point of this paper is the proof of inpainting function for limited-angle sinogram is continuous, which can be approached by neural networks in a data-driven method, granted by the universal approximation theorem. Based on this, we propose SIN as the fitting function -- a convolutional neural network trained to generate missing sinogram data conditioned on scanned data. Besides CNN module, we design two differentiable and rapid modules, Radon and Inverse Radon Transformer network, to encapsulate the physical model in the training procedure. They enable new joint loss functions to optimize both sinogram and reconstructed image in sync, which improved the image quality significantly. To tackle the labeled data bottleneck in clinical research, we form a sinogram-image-sinogram closed loop, and the difference between sinograms can be used as training loss. In this way, the proposed network can be self-trained, with only limited-angle data for unsupervised domain adaptation. We demonstrate the performance of our proposed network on parallel beam X-ray CT in lung CT datasets from Data Science Bowl 2017 and the ability of unsupervised transfer learning in Zubal's phantom. The proposed method performs better than state-of-art method SART-TV in PSNR and SSIM metrics, with noticeable visual improvements in reconstructions.

Direct Network Transfer: Transfer Learning of Sentence Embeddings for Semantic Similarity

Sentence encoders, which produce sentence embeddings using neural networks, are typically evaluated by how well they transfer to downstream tasks. This includes semantic similarity, an important task in natural language understanding. Although there has been much work dedicated to building sentence encoders, the accompanying transfer learning techniques have received relatively little attention. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning setting specialized for semantic similarity, which we refer to as direct network transfer. Through experiments on several standard text similarity datasets, we show that applying direct network transfer to existing encoders can lead to state-of-the-art performance. Additionally, we compare several approaches to transfer sentence encoders to semantic similarity tasks, showing that the choice of transfer learning setting greatly affects the performance in many cases, and differs by encoder and dataset.

Magnetic Navigation of a Rotating Colloidal Swarm Using Ultrasound Images

Microrobots are considered as promising tools for biomedical applications. However, the imaging of them becomes challenges in order to be further applied on in vivo environments. Here we report the magnetic navigation of a paramagnetic nanoparticle based swarm using ultrasound images. The swarm can be generated using simple rotating magnetic fields, resulting in a region containing particles with a high area density. Ultrasound images of the swarm shows a periodic changing of imaging contrast. The reason for such dynamic contrast has been analyzed and experimental results are presented. Moreover, this swarm exhibits enhanced ultrasound imaging in comparison to that formed by individual nanoparticles with a low area density, and the relationship between imaging contrast and area density is testified. Furthermore, the microrobotic swarm can be navigated near a solid surface at different velocities, and the imaging contrast show negligible changes. This method allows us to localize and navigate a microrobotic swarm with enhanced ultrasound imaging indicating a promising approach for imaging of microrobots.

A Magnetically-Triggered Soft Capsule for On-Demand Mucus Collection

In this work, we present a soft capsule for mucus collection in human intestine for diagnostic purpose, with reduced risk of tissue damage compared with other biopsy methods. The capsule implements passive locomotion and the sampling process is triggered by magnetic field using a permanent magnet, which is placed on the skin above the region of interest (ROI). The capsule contains a soft vacuum chamber which is sealed with wax. When magnetic field and mucus are present simultaneously, the circuit inside the capsule will be closed and nichrome wire will start to generate heat to melt the wax, and mucus will be collected into the vacuum chamber due to air pressure. Experiments on heating capability of nichrome wire, mucus collection and reliability of the capsule are conducted to validate this design.

Statistical analysis on XMM-Newton X-ray flares of Mrk 421: distributions of peak flux and flaring time duration

The energy dissipation mechanism in blazar jet is unknown. Blazar's flares could provide insights on this problem. Here we report statistical results of XMM-Newton X-ray flares of Mrk 421. We analyze all public XMM-Newton X-ray observations for Mrk 421, and construct the light curves. Through fitting light curves, we obtain the parameters of flare-profiles, such as peak flux ($F_{\rm p}$) and flaring time duration ($T_{\rm fl}$). It is found that both the distributions of $F_{\rm p}$ and $T_{\rm fl}$ obey a power-law form, with the same index of $α_{\rm F}=α_{\rm T}\approx1$. The statistical properties are consistent with the predictions by a self-organized criticality (SOC) system with energy dissipation in one-dimensional space. This is similar to solar flare, but with different space dimensions of the energy dissipation domain. This suggests that X-ray flaers of Mrk 421 are possibly driven by a magnetic reconnection mechanism. Moreover, in the analysis, we find that variability on timescale of $\sim1000\ $s frequently appears. Such rapid variability indicates a magnetic field of $\geq 2.1δ_{\rm D}^{-1/3}$ G ($δ_{\rm D}$ is the Doppler factor) in emission region.

Efficient Training on Very Large Corpora via Gramian Estimation

We study the problem of learning similarity functions over very large corpora using neural network embedding models. These models are typically trained using SGD with sampling of random observed and unobserved pairs, with a number of samples that grows quadratically with the corpus size, making it expensive to scale to very large corpora. We propose new efficient methods to train these models without having to sample unobserved pairs. Inspired by matrix factorization, our approach relies on adding a global quadratic penalty to all pairs of examples and expressing this term as the matrix-inner-product of two generalized Gramians. We show that the gradient of this term can be efficiently computed by maintaining estimates of the Gramians, and develop variance reduction schemes to improve the quality of the estimates. We conduct large-scale experiments that show a significant improvement in training time and generalization quality compared to traditional sampling methods.

Development and validation of Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory for Chinese medical college students (CTDI-M)

PURPOSE: Critical thinkers in medical context must be not only "able" but also "willing" to think critically. To develop and conduct psychometric testing of Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory which measure the critical thinking disposition of Chinese medical college students. METHODS: The study was conducted in two stages: (a) item generation and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and (b) testing of psychometric properties (construct validity, split-half reliability and Cronbach's alpha, and test-retest reliability. The subjects were composed of 441 undergraduate medical and nursing students from a medical university in China. Test-retest reliability of the instrument was determined at two-week interval. Data was analyzed with SPSS13.0. RESULTS: Preliminary 264 items were obtained using an open-ended questionnaire; from which 61 items were reviewed through half open-ended questionnaire, and finally 18 items were chosen. Eighteen final items were sorted into 3 factors, which were identified as "Open-mindedness ", "Systematicity/analyticity" and "Truth seeking". The cumulative percent of variance was 57.66%. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.924 and the factors' alphas ranged from 0.824-0.862. Correlational analysis indicated moderate to high correlations between the subscales and total scores of the CTDI-CM. Our results indicated that open-mindedness and systematicity/analyticity were higher for medical students than nursing students. CONCLUSIONS: This study conducted in a Chinese medical college student population demonstrated a reliable and valid instrument for clinical thinking disposition, which measured motivation and cognitive components. The effect of enrollment year and major on the profiles of critical thinking dispositions was identified, emphasizing the importance of applying specialized teaching to students of different majors.

Improving Text-to-SQL Evaluation Methodology

To be informative, an evaluation must measure how well systems generalize to realistic unseen data. We identify limitations of and propose improvements to current evaluations of text-to-SQL systems. First, we compare human-generated and automatically generated questions, characterizing properties of queries necessary for real-world applications. To facilitate evaluation on multiple datasets, we release standardized and improved versions of seven existing datasets and one new text-to-SQL dataset. Second, we show that the current division of data into training and test sets measures robustness to variations in the way questions are asked, but only partially tests how well systems generalize to new queries; therefore, we propose a complementary dataset split for evaluation of future work. Finally, we demonstrate how the common practice of anonymizing variables during evaluation removes an important challenge of the task. Our observations highlight key difficulties, and our methodology enables effective measurement of future development.
