An explicit compact universal space for real flows

The Kakutani-Bebutov Theorem (1968) states that any compact metric real flow whose fixed point set is homeomorphic to a subset of $\mathbb{R}$ embeds into the Bebutov flow, the $\mathbb{R}$-shift on $C(\mathbb{R},[0,1])$. An interesting fact is that this universal space is a function space. However, it is not compact, nor locally compact. We construct an explicit countable product of compact subspaces of the Bebutov flow which is a universal space for all compact metric real flows, with no restriction; namely, into which any compact metric real flow embeds. The result is compared to previously known universal spaces.

Ideal inner nodal chain semimetals in Li2XY (X = Ca, Ba; Y = Si, Ge) materials

The chain-type nodal loops in the reciprocal space can generate exotic nodal chain fermions. Here, we report that Li2XY (X = Ca, Ba; Y = Si, Ge) compounds are ideal inner nodal chain semimetals. Their band structures are composed of two connecting nodal loops with either hybrid or type-I band dispersion. The signatures of the nodal chain, such as the nontrivial surface states, are quite pronounced in these Li2XY compounds since there is only a single inner nodal chain without other extraneous bands near the Fermi level. These compounds are existing materials and ambient-stable, which is available to realize the experimental detection of inner nodal chain fermions or further the practical applications.

Towards a holographic approach to spherical aberration correction in scanning transmission electron microscopy

Recent progress in phase modulation using nanofabricated electron holograms has demonstrated how the phase of an electron beam can be controlled. In this paper, we apply this concept to the correction of spherical aberration in a scanning transmission electron microscope and demonstrate an improvement in spatial resolution. Such a holographic approach to spherical aberration correction is advantageous for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

Spherical aberration correction in a scanning transmission electron microscope using a sculpted foil

Nearly twenty years ago, following a sixty year struggle, scientists succeeded in correcting the bane of electron lenses, spherical aberration, using electromagnetic aberration correction. However, such correctors necessitate re-engineering of the electron column, additional space, a power supply, water cooling, and other requirements. Here, we show how modern nanofabrication techniques can be used to surpass the resolution of an uncorrected scanning transmission electron microscope more simply by sculpting a foil of material into a refractive corrector that negates spherical aberration. This corrector can be fabricated at low cost using a simple process and installed on existing electron microscopes without changing their hardware, thereby providing an immediate upgrade to spatial resolution. Using our corrector, we reveal features of Si and Cu samples that cannot be resolved in the uncorrected microscope.

Mean proximality and mean Li-Yorke chaos

We prove that if a topological dynamical system is mean sensitive and contains a mean proximal pair consisting of a transitive point and a periodic point, then it is mean Li-Yorke chaotic (DC2 chaotic). On the other hand we show that a system is mean proximal if and only if it is uniquely ergodic and the unique measure is supported on one point.

Predicting 3D structure, flexibility and stability of RNA hairpins in monovalent and divalent ion solutions

A full understanding of RNA-mediated biology would require the knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) structures, structural flexibility and stability of RNAs. To predict RNA 3D structures and stability, we have previously proposed a three-bead coarse-grained predictive model with implicit salt/solvent potentials. In this study, we will further develop the model by improving the implicit-salt electrostatic potential and involving a sequence-dependent coaxial stacking potential to enable the model to simulate RNA 3D structure folding in divalent/monovalent ion solutions. As compared with the experimental data, the present model can predict 3D structures of RNA hairpins with bulge/internal loops (<77nt) from their sequences at the corresponding experimental ion conditions with an overall improved accuracy, and the model also makes reliable predictions for the flexibility of RNA hairpins with bulge loops of different length at extensive divalent/monovalent ion conditions. In addition, the model successfully predicts the stability of RNA hairpins with various loops/stems in divalent/monovalent ion solutions.

Flexibility of nucleic acids: from DNA to RNA

The structural flexibility of nucleic acids plays a key role in many fundamental life processes, such as gene replication and expression, DNA-protein recognition, and gene regulation. To obtain a thorough understanding of nucleic acid flexibility, extensive studies have been performed using various experimental methods and theoretical models. In this review, we will introduce the progress that has been made in understanding the flexibility of nucleic acids including DNAs and RNAs, and will emphasize the experimental findings and the effects of salt, temperature, and sequence. Finally, we will discuss the major unanswered questions in understanding the flexibility of nucleic acids.

A Friendship Privacy Attack on Friends and 2-Distant Neighbors in Social Networks

In an undirected social graph, a friendship link involves two users and the friendship is visible in both the users' friend lists. Such a dual visibility of the friendship may raise privacy threats. This is because both users can separately control the visibility of a friendship link to other users and their privacy policies for the link may not be consistent. Even if one of them conceals the link from a third user, the third user may find such a friendship link from another user's friend list. In addition, as most users allow their friends to see their friend lists in most social network systems, an adversary can exploit the inconsistent policies to launch privacy attacks to identify and infer many of a targeted user's friends. In this paper, we propose, analyze and evaluate such an attack which is called Friendship Identification and Inference (FII) attack. In a FII attack scenario, we assume that an adversary can only see his friend list and the friend lists of his friends who do not hide the friend lists from him. Then, a FII attack contains two attack steps: 1) friend identification and 2) friend inference. In the friend identification step, the adversary tries to identify a target's friends based on his friend list and those of his friends. In the friend inference step, the adversary attempts to infer the target's friends by using the proposed random walk with restart approach. We present experimental results using three real social network datasets and show that FII attacks are generally efficient and effective when adversaries and targets are friends or 2-distant neighbors. We also comprehensively analyze the attack results in order to find what values of parameters and network features could promote FII attacks. Currently, most popular social network systems with an undirected friendship graph, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare, are susceptible to FII attacks.

Stochastic evolution equations in portfolio credit modelling with applications to exotic credit products

We consider a structural credit model for a large portfolio of credit risky assets where the correlation is due to a market factor. By considering the large portfolio limit of this system we show the existence of a density process for the asset values. This density evolves according to a stochastic partial differential equation and we establish existence and uniqueness for the solution taking values in a suitable function space. The loss function of the portfolio is then a function of the evolution of this density at the default boundary. We develop numerical methods for pricing and calibration of the model to credit indices and consider its performance pre and post credit crunch. Finally, we give further examples illustrating the valuation of exotic credit products, specifically forward starting CDOs.
