Topological Nodal Line Electrides: Realization of Ideal Nodal Line State Nearly Immune from Spin-Orbit Coupling

Nodal line semimetals (NLSs) have attracted broad interest in current research. In most of existing NLSs, the intrinsic properties of nodal lines are greatly destroyed because nodal lines usually suffer sizable gaps induced by non-negligible spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In this work,we propose the topological nodal line electrides (TNLEs), which achieve electronic structures of nodal lines and electrides simultaneously, provide new insight on designing excellent NLSs nearly immune from SOC. Since the states near the Fermi level are most contributed by nonnucleus-bounded interstitial electrons, nodal lines in TNLEs manifest extremely small SOCinduced gap even possessing heavy elements. Especially, we propose the family of A2B (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; B= As, Sb, Bi) materials are realistic TNLEs with negligible SOC-induced gaps, which can play as excellent platforms to study the intrinsic properties of TNLEs

Two-dimensional Weyl nodal line semimetal in high Curie temperature d0 ferromagnet K2N monolayer

Nodal line semimetals in two-dimensional (2-D) materials have attracted intense attention currently. From fundamental physics and spintronic applications points of view, high Curie temperature ferromagnetic (FM) ones with nodal lines robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are significantly in desirable. Here, we propose that FM K2N monolayer is such Weyl nodal line semimetal. We show that K2N monolayer is dynamically stable, and has a FM ground magnetic state with the out-of-plane [001] magnetization. It shows two nodal lines in the low-energy band structures. Both nodal lines are robust against SOC, under the protection of mirror symmetry. We construct an effective Hamiltonian, which can well characterize the nodal lines in the system. Remarkably, the nodal line semimetal proposed here is distinct from the previously studied ones in that K2N monolayer is 2-D d0-type ferromagnet with the magnetism arising from the partially filled N-p orbitals, which can bring special advantages in spintronic applications. Besides, the Curie temperature in K2N monolayer is estimated to be 942K, being significantly higher than previous FM nodal lines materials. We also find that, specific tensile strains can transform the nodal line from type-I to a type-II one, making its nodal line characteristics even more interesting.

Mean dimension and an embedding theorem for real flows

We develop mean dimension theory for $\mathbb{R}$-flows. We obtain fundamental properties and examples and prove an embedding theorem: Any real flow $(X,\mathbb{R})$ of mean dimension strictly less than $r$ admits an extension $(Y,\mathbb{R})$ whose mean dimension is equal to that of $(X,\mathbb{R})$ and such that $(Y,\mathbb{R})$ can be embedded in the $\mathbb{R}$-shift on the compact function space $\{f\in C(\mathbb{R},[-1,1])|\;\mathrm{supp}(\hat{f})\subset [-r,r]\}$, where $\hat{f}$ is the Fourier transform of $f$ considered as a tempered distribution. These canonical embedding spaces appeared previously as a tool in embedding results for $\mathbb{Z}$-actions.

Passively mode-locked thulium-doped all-fiber laser based on low V number fiber bending

This paper describes a mode locking technique based on enhanced polarization dependent loss (PDL). The method utilizes a bent single mode fiber (SMF28) coil to induce sufficient PDL at 2 \(μ\)m wavelength region. Significant PDL in SMF28 coils is enabled since the light is much more weakly guided. A passively mode-locked thulium doped all-fiber laser is demonstrated using this simple device with polarization controllers as mode locker. The results indicate a moderate amount of 1 dB is sufficient to initiate and sustain stable mode-locking operation. We believe, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of mode-locked fiber laser fully based on polarization dependent property of bent fiber section.

Short length Lyot filter utilized in dual-wavelength and wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser generation

Dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser and wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser have emerged as a promising light source. However, there is few reports on generating these two output from just one laser cavity. In this report, we demonstrate a dual-wavelength and wavelength tunable mode-locked fiber laser output from one laser cavity by utilizing short length Lyot filter. The central wavelengths of dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser are 1540 nm and 1564 nm and the tunable laser range is about 32 nm. We believe it could provide a simple set-up for generating dual-wavelength and wavelength tunable mode-locked output from one laser cavity.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Cumulative Pregnancy Rate Prediction from Basic Patient Characteristics

Tens of millions of women suffer from infertility worldwide each year. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the best choice for many such patients. However, IVF is expensive, time-consuming, and both physically and emotionally demanding. The first question that a patient usually asks before the IVF is how likely she will conceive, given her basic medical examination information. This paper proposes three approaches to predict the cumulative pregnancy rate after multiple oocyte pickup cycles. Experiments on 11,190 patients showed that first clustering the patients into different groups and then building a support vector machine model for each group can achieve the best overall performance. Our model could be a quick and economic approach for reliably estimating the cumulative pregnancy rate for a patient, given only her basic medical examination information, well before starting the actual IVF procedure. The predictions can help the patient make optimal decisions on whether to use her own oocyte or donor oocyte, how many oocyte pickup cycles she may need, whether to use embryo frozen, etc. They will also reduce the patient's cost and time to pregnancy, and improve her quality of life.

All-fiber dual-wavelength mode-locked laser using a bend-induced-birefringence Lyot-filter as gain-tilt equalizer

Multi-wavelength fiber lasers have emerged as a promising light source for the application in wavelength division multiplexing communication, terahertz wave generation and optical sensing due to high efficiency and robustness. Lyot-filter emerges as a potential device for multi-wavelength generation application. However, because of the high birefringence of polarization maintaining fiber in Lyot-filter, it is difficult to generate broadband dual-wavelength or multi-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser by using common Lyot-filter. In this paper, for the first time, we propose an idea of using the low birefringence induced by bending the single-mode fiber to form a Lyot-filter for dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser generation. The dual-wavelength output centers at 1532 and 1556 nm and it may simplify the set-up for dual-wavelength mode-locked laser.

Superconducting properties in a candidate topological nodal line semimetal SnTaS$_2$ with a centrosymmetric crystal structure

We report the magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat measurements and band structure calculations of layered superconductor SnTaS$_2$. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown by chemical vapor transport method. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a type-II superconductor with transition temperature $T_c = 3$ K. The upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) shows large anisotropy for magnetic field parallel to $ab$ plane ($H//ab$) and $c$ axis ($H//c$), and the temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ for $H//ab$ shows obvious unconventional upward feature at low temperature. Band structure of SnTaS$_2$ shows several band crossings near the Fermi level, which form three nodal lines in the k$_z$ = 0 plane resulting in drumhead-like surface states when spin-orbit coupling is not considered. These results indicate that SnTaS$_2$ is a superconductor with possible topological nodal line semimetal character.

Multi-Task Deep Learning with Dynamic Programming for Embryo Early Development Stage Classification from Time-Lapse Videos

Time-lapse is a technology used to record the development of embryos during in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Accurate classification of embryo early development stages can provide embryologists valuable information for assessing the embryo quality, and hence is critical to the success of IVF. This paper proposes a multi-task deep learning with dynamic programming (MTDL-DP) approach for this purpose. It first uses MTDL to pre-classify each frame in the time-lapse video to an embryo development stage, and then DP to optimize the stage sequence so that the stage number is monotonically non-decreasing, which usually holds in practice. Different MTDL frameworks, e.g., one-to-many, many-to-one, and many-to-many, are investigated. It is shown that the one-to-many MTDL framework achieved the best compromise between performance and computational cost. To our knowledge, this is the first study that applies MTDL to embryo early development stage classification from time-lapse videos.

Predicting 3D structure and stability of RNA pseudoknots in monovalent and divalent ion solutions

RNA pseudoknots are a kind of minimal RNA tertiary structural motifs, and their three-dimensional (3D) structures and stability play essential roles in a variety of biological functions. Therefore, to predict 3D structures and stability of RNA pseudoknots is essential for understanding their functions. In the work, we employed our previously developed coarse-grained model with implicit salt to make extensive predictions and comprehensive analyses on the 3D structures and stability for RNA pseudoknots in monovalent/divalent ion solutions. The comparisons with available experimental data show that our model can successfully predict the 3D structures of RNA pseudoknots from their sequences, and can also make reliable predictions for the stability of RNA pseudoknots with different lengths and sequences over a wide range of monovalent/divalent ion concentrations. Furthermore, we made comprehensive analyses on the unfolding pathway for various RNA pseudoknots in ion solutions. Our analyses for extensive pseudokonts and the wide range of monovalent/divalent ion concentrations verify that the unfolding pathway of RNA pseudoknots is mainly dependent on the relative stability of unfolded intermediate states, and show that the unfolding pathway of RNA pseudoknots can be significantly modulated by their sequences and solution ion conditions.

Mn2C monolayer: hydrogenation/oxygenation induced strong room-temperature ferromagnetism and potential applications

Two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials with strong ferromagnetism and high Curie temperature are significantly desired for the applications of nanoscale devices. Here, based on first-principles computations, we report hydrogenated/oxygenated Mn2C monolayer is a such material with strong room-temperature ferromagnetism. The bare Mn2C monolayer is an antiferromagnetic metal with the local magnetic moment of Mn ~ 3μB. However, the antiferromagnetic coupling of Mn atoms can transform into the ferromagnetic order under hydrogenation/oxygenation. Especially, the magnetic moments in hydrogenated/oxygenated Mn2C monolayer can be as large as 6 μB per unit cell, and the Curie temperatures are above 290K. Beside the potential applications in spintronic devices, our work suggests that Mn2C monolayer is also promising to be used in hydrogen/oxygen detection and removal devices.

Two-Dimensional GaN: An Excellent Electrode Material Providing Fast Ion Diffusion and High Storage Capacity for Li-Ion and Na-Ion Batteries

Identifying applicable anode materials is a significant task for Li- and Na-ion battery (LIB and NIB) technologies. We propose the GaN monolayer (2D GaN) can be a good anode candidate. The GaN monolayer manifests stable Li/Na adsorption and inherently low theoretical voltages. Most excitingly, both high storage capacity and extremely fast Li/Na diffusion can be simultaneously realized in the GaN monolayer. For Li, the storage capacity and diffusion barrier is 938 mA h g-1 and 80 meV , respectively. And the values for Na are 625 mA h g-1 and 22 meV. Comparing with known 2D anode materials with similar scale of ion diffusion barriers, the GaN monolayer almost possesses the highest Li/Na storage capacity discovered to date. Our work suggests that the 2D GaN is a prospective anode material offering fast ion diffusion and high storage capacity.

Topological Phase with Critical-Type Nodal Line State in Intermetallic CaPd

In recent years, realizing new topological phase of matter has been a hot topic in the fields of physics and materials science. Topological semimetals and metals can conventionally be classified into two types: type-I and type-II according to the tilting degree of the fermion cone. Here, it is the first time to report a new topological metal phase with the critical-type nodal line between type-I and type-II nodal line. The critical-type nodal line shows a unique nontrivial band crossing which is composed of a at band and a dispersive band and leads to a new fermionic state. We propose intermetallic CaPd can be an existing topological metal for the new fermionic state, characterized with critical-type nodal line in the bulk and drumhead band structure on the surface. Our work not only promotes the concept of critical-type nodal line, but also provides the material realization to study its exotic properties in future experiments.

Spontaneous laser line sweeping in bi-directional ring thulium fiber laser

We report a phenomenon of self-sweeping in a bi-directional ring thulium-doped fiber laser, for the first time. The laser is spontaneously sweeping in both directions at a rate up to 0.2 nm/s with 15 nm sweeping range in 1.95 μm wavelength region. The laser output is switchable between two different working modes: periodical spontaneous laser line sweeping with generation of microsecond pulses in time domain; or static central wavelength with amplitude modulated temporally.

The centrosymmetric Li2NaN material: an ideal topological semimetal with critical-type triply degenerate nodal points

Triply degenerate band crossing can generate novel triply degenerate nodal point (TDNP) fermions. For the TDNP character to the best manifest in physical properties, it desires that the TDNPs are near the Fermi level, far away with each other in the reciprocal space, and not coexisting with other quasiparticles or extraneous bands. Here we predict that the centrosymmetic material Li2NaN is a realistic TDNP semimetal that meets all these requirements. Li2NaN features only a single pair of TDNPs at the Fermi level, under the protection of the C6v symmetry. Interestingly, the TDNPs identified here show the critical-type band crossing, which is different from those in previously reported TDNP semimetals. The Fermi arc surface states for the TDNPs have been identified. Under lattice strain, we show that the position of the TDNPs can be tuned, and the TDNPs can even be annihilated. The centrosymmetry in Li2NaN makes the TDNP transform into a critical type Dirac point under the spin-orbit coupling, which is drastically distinct from those in noncentrosymmetric systems. Such centrosymmetic TDNP semimetal has been rarely identified in realistic materials.

Zero-dimensional isomorphic dynamical models

By an \emph{assignment} we mean a mapping from a Choquet simplex $K$ to probability measure-preserving systems, obeying some natural restrictions. We prove that if $Φ$ is an aperiodic assignment on a Choquet simplex $K$ such that the set of extreme points $\mathsf{ex}K$ is a countable union $\bigcup_n E_n$, where each set $E_n$ is compact, zero-dimensional, and the restriction of $Φ$ to the Bauer simplex $K_n$ spanned by $E_n$ can be `embedded' in some topological dynamical system, then $Φ$ can be `realized' in a zero-dimensional system.

A new universal real flow of the Hilbert-cubical type

We provide a new universal real flow of the Hilbert-cubical type. We prove that any real flow can be equivariantly embedded in the translation on $L(\mathbb{R})^\mathbb{N}$, where $L(\mathbb{R})$ denotes the space of $1$-Lipschitz functions $f:\mathbb{R}\to[0,1]$. Furthermore, all those functions in $L(\mathbb{R})^\mathbb{N}$ that are images of such embeddings can be chosen as $C^1$-functions.
