Conflating point of interest (POI) data: A systematic review of matching methods

Point of interest (POI) data provide digital representations of places in the real world, and have been increasingly used to understand human-place interactions, support urban management, and build smart cities. Many POI datasets have been developed, which often have different geographic coverages, attribute focuses, and data quality. From time to time, researchers may need to conflate two or more POI datasets in order to build a better representation of the places in the study areas. While various POI conflation methods have been developed, there lacks a systematic review, and consequently, it is difficult for researchers new to POI conflation to quickly grasp and use these existing methods. This paper fills such a gap. Following the protocol of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), we conduct a systematic review by searching through three bibliographic databases using reproducible syntax to identify related studies. We then focus on a main step of POI conflation, i.e., POI matching, and systematically summarize and categorize the identified methods. Current limitations and future opportunities are discussed afterwards. We hope that this review can provide some guidance for researchers interested in conflating POI datasets for their research.

Nearly flat Chern band in periodically strained monolayer and bilayer graphene

The flat band is a key ingredient for the realization of interesting quantum states for novel functionalities. In this work, we investigate the conditions for the flat band in both monolayer and bilayer graphene under periodic strain. We find topological nearly flat bands with homogeneous distribution of Berry curvature in both systems. The quantum metric of the nearly flat band closely resembles that for Landau levels. For monolayer graphene, the strain field can be regarded as an effective gauge field, while for Bernal-stacked (AB-stacked) bilayer graphene, its role is beyond the description of gauge field. We also provide an understanding of the origin of the nearly flat band in monolayer graphene in terms of the Jackiw-Rebbi model for Dirac fermions with sign-changing mass. Our work suggests strained graphene as a promising platform for strongly correlated quantum states.

Symmetry-based classification of exact flat bands in single and bilayer moiré systems

We study the influence of spatial symmetries on the appearance and the number of exact flat bands (FBs) in single and bilayer systems with Dirac or quadratic band crossing points, and systematically classify all possible number of exact flat bands in systems with different point group symmetries. We find that a maximum of 6 FBs can be protected by symmetries, and show an example of 6 FBs in a system with QBCP under periodic strain field of $\mathcal{C}_{6v}$ point group symmetry. All known examples of exact FBs in single and bilayer systems fall under this classification, including chiral twisted bilayer graphene, and new examples of exact FBs are found. We show the construction of wavefunctions for the highly degenerate FBs, and prove that any such set of FBs are $\mathds{Z}_2$ nontrivial, where all WFs polarized on one sublattice together have Chern number $C = 1$ and WFs polarized on the other sublattice together have $C = -1$. These bands also satisfy ideal non-Abelian quantum geometry condition. We further show that, just like in TBG, topological heavy fermion description of the FBs with higher degeneracy is possible as long as the Berry curvature distribution is peaked around a point in the BZ.

"Extraordinary" Phase Transition Revealed in a van der Waals Antiferromagnet

While the surface-bulk correspondence has been ubiquitously shown in topological phases, the relationship between surface and bulk in Landau-like phases is much less explored. Theoretical investigations since 1970s for semi-infinite systems have predicted the possibility of the surface order emerging at a higher temperature than the bulk, clearly illustrating a counterintuitive situation and greatly enriching phase transitions. But experimental realizations of this prediction remain missing. Here, we demonstrate the higher-temperature surface and lower-temperature bulk phase transitions in CrSBr, a van der Waals (vdW) layered antiferromagnet. We leverage the surface sensitivity of electric dipole second harmonic generation (SHG) to resolve surface magnetism, the bulk nature of electric quadrupole SHG to probe bulk spin correlations, and their interference to capture the two magnetic domain states. Our density functional theory calculations show the suppression of ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition at the surface responsible for this enhanced surface magnetism. Our results not only show unexpected, richer phase transitions in vdW magnets, but also provide viable ways to enhance magnetism in their 2D form.

Polariton-Induced Unconventional Superconductivity and Emergent SU(2) Symmetry in Moire flat bands

We propose a polariton-moiré coupled system to realize an exact solvable model of strongly correlated superconductors. The polariton condensate induces intervalley attraction between moiré electrons in quasi-flat topological bands, leading to emergent SU(2) symmetry and exactly solutions of the many-body ground state. This system expands the condensate-induced superconductivity to the strong-correlation regime, enabling superconductivity at elevated temperatures and allowing the study of non-Fermi liquid states with a solvable, predictive model. It is promising as a versatile platform for emulating unconventional superconductivity and other strongly correlated phenomena in complex, correlated materials.

Mirror-symmetry protected higher-order topological zero-frequency boundary and corner modes in Maxwell lattices

Maxwell lattices, where the number of degrees of freedom equals the number of constraints, are known to host topologically-protected zero-frequency modes and states of self stress, characterized by a topological index called topological polarization. In this letter, we show that in addition to these known topological modes, with the help of a mirror symmetry, the inherent chiral symmetry of Maxwell lattices creates another topological index, the mirror-graded winding number (MGWN). This MGWN is a higher order topological index, which gives rise to topological zero modes and states of self stress at mirror-invariant domain walls and corners between two systems with different MGWNs. We further show that two systems with same topological polarization can have different MGWNs, indicating that these two topological indices are fundamentally distinct.

Ubiquitous nematic Dirac semimetal emerging from interacting quadratic band touching system

Quadratic band touching (QBT) points are widely observed in 2D and 3D materials, including bilayer graphene and Luttinger semimetals, and attract significant attention from theory to experiment. However, even in its simplest form, the 2D checkerboard lattice QBT model, the phase diagram characterized by temperature and interaction strength still remains unknown beyond the weak-coupling regime. Intense debates persist regarding the existence of various interaction-driven insulating states in this system. To address these uncertainties, we employ thermal tensor network simulations, specifically exponential tensor renormalization group and tangent space tensor renormalization group, along with density matrix renormalization group calculations to provide a comprehensive finite-temperature phase diagram for this model and shed light on previous ambiguities. Notably, our findings reveal the emergence of a robust bond-nematic Dirac semimetal phase with distinct thermodynamic properties that set it part from the nematic insulating state and other symmetry broken states. This previously overlooked feature is found to be ubiquitous in interacting QBT systems. We also discuss the implications of these results for experimental systems such as bilayer graphene and iridate compounds.

Intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect and gate-switchable Berry curvature sliding in twisted bilayer graphene

Though the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and nonlocal transport response reveals nontrivial band topology governed by the Berry curvature in twisted bilayer graphene, some recent works reported nonlinear Hall signals in graphene superlattices that are caused by the extrinsic disorder scattering rather than the intrinsic Berry curvature dipole moment. In this work, we report a Berry curvature dipole induced intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect in high-quality twisted bilayer graphene devices. We also find that the application of the displacement field substantially changes the direction and amplitude of the nonlinear Hall voltages, as a result of a field-induced sliding of the Berry curvature hotspots. Our work not only proves that the Berry curvature dipole could play a dominant role in generating the intrinsic nonlinear Hall signal in graphene superlattices with low disorder densities, but also demonstrates twisted bilayer graphene to be a sensitive and fine-tunable platform for second harmonic generation and rectification.

The Potential and Pitfalls of using a Large Language Model such as ChatGPT or GPT-4 as a Clinical Assistant

Recent studies have demonstrated promising performance of ChatGPT and GPT-4 on several medical domain tasks. However, none have assessed its performance using a large-scale real-world electronic health record database, nor have evaluated its utility in providing clinical diagnostic assistance for patients across a full range of disease presentation. We performed two analyses using ChatGPT and GPT-4, one to identify patients with specific medical diagnoses using a real-world large electronic health record database and the other, in providing diagnostic assistance to healthcare workers in the prospective evaluation of hypothetical patients. Our results show that GPT-4 across disease classification tasks with chain of thought and few-shot prompting can achieve performance as high as 96% F1 scores. For patient assessment, GPT-4 can accurately diagnose three out of four times. However, there were mentions of factually incorrect statements, overlooking crucial medical findings, recommendations for unnecessary investigations and overtreatment. These issues coupled with privacy concerns, make these models currently inadequate for real world clinical use. However, limited data and time needed for prompt engineering in comparison to configuration of conventional machine learning workflows highlight their potential for scalability across healthcare applications.

Endotaxial Stabilization of 2D Charge Density Waves with Long-range Order

Charge density waves are emergent quantum states that spontaneously reduce crystal symmetry, drive metal-insulator transitions, and precede superconductivity. In low-dimensions, distinct quantum states arise, however, thermal fluctuations and external disorder destroy long-range order. Here we stabilize ordered two-dimensional (2D) charge density waves through endotaxial synthesis of confined monolayers of 1T-TaS$_2$. Specifically, an ordered incommensurate charge density wave (oIC-CDW) is realized in 2D with dramatically enhanced amplitude and resistivity. By enhancing CDW order, the hexatic nature of charge density waves becomes observable. Upon heating via in-situ TEM, the CDW continuously melts in a reversible hexatic process wherein topological defects form in the charge density wave. From these results, new regimes of the CDW phase diagram for 1T-TaS$_2$ are derived and consistent with the predicted emergence of vestigial quantum order.

Variation of Critical Crystallization Pressure for the Formation of Square Ice in Graphene Nanocapillaries

Two-dimensional square ice in graphene nanocapillaries at room temperature is a fascinating phenomenon and has been confirmed experimentally. Instead of temperature for bulk ice, the high van der Waals pressure becomes an all-important factor to induce the formation of square ice and needs to be studied further. By all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of water confined between two parallel graphene sheets, which are changed in size (the length and the width of the graphene sheets) over a wide range, we find that the critical crystallization pressure for the formation of square ice in nanocapillary strongly depends on the size of the graphene sheet. The critical crystallization pressure slowly decreases as the graphene size increases, converging to approximately macroscopic crystallization pressure. The unfreezable threshold for graphene size is obtained by estimating the actual pressure and it is difficult to form the square ice spontaneously in practice when the graphene sheet is smaller than the threshold. Moreover, the critical crystallization pressure fluctuates when the graphene size is minuscule, and the range of oscillation narrows as the sheet size increases, converging to the macroscopic behavior of a single critical icing pressure for large sheets. The graphene size also affects the stability and crystallization time of square ice.

Fermion disorder operator at Gross-Neveu and deconfined quantum criticalities

The fermion disorder operator has been shown to reveal the entanglement information in 1D Luttinger liquids and 2D free and interacting Fermi and non-Fermi liquids emerging at quantum critical points(QCP). Here we study, by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, the scaling behavior of disorder operator in correlated Dirac systems. We first demonstrate the logarithmic scaling behavior of the disorder operator at the Gross-Neveu (GN) chiral Ising and Heisenberg QCPs, where consistent conformal field theory (CFT) content of the GN-QCP in its coefficient is found. Then we study a 2D monopole free deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) realized between a quantum-spin Hall insulator and a superconductor. Our data point to negative values of the logarithmic coefficients such that the DQCP does not correspond to a unitary CFT. Density matrix renormalization group calculations of the disorder operator on a 1D DQCP model also detect emergent continuous symmetries.

A conceptual design of TOF based on MRPC technology for the future electron-positron Higgs factory

Future electron-positron Higgs factories could provide excellent opportunities to examine the Standard Model and search for new physics with much higher precision than the LHC. A precise particle identification is crucial for the physics program at these future colliders and can be achieved via precise time-of-flight (TOF) measurements of the final state particles. In this paper, we propose a conceptual design of TOF system based on the multigap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) technology for future electron-positron Higgs factories. This TOF system has a time resolution of < 35 ps, a total active area of 77m2, and a construction budget of the order of 5 million USD. Keywords: MRPC, TOF, PID, CEPC

Backscattering-free edge states below all bands in two-dimensional auxetic media

Unidirectional and backscattering-free propagation of sound waves is of fundamental interest in physics, and highly sought-after in engineering. Current strategies utilize topologically protected chiral edge modes in bandgaps, or complex mechanisms involving active constituents or nonlinearity. Here we propose a new class of passive, linear, one-way edge states based on spin-momentum locking of Rayleigh waves in two-dimensional media in the limit of vanishing bulk modulus, which provides $100\%$ unidirectional and backscattering-free edge propagation at a broad range of frequencies instead of residing in gaps between bulk bands. We further show that such modes are characterized by a new topological winding number that is analogous to discrete angular momentum eigenvalues in quantum mechanics. These passive and backscattering-free edge waves have the potential to enable a new class of phononic devices in the form of lattices or continua that work in previously inaccessible frequency ranges.

Many versus one: the disorder operator and entanglement entropy in fermionic quantum matter

Motivated by recent development of the concept of the disorder operator and its relation with entanglement entropy in bosonic systems, here we show the disorder operator successfully probes many aspects of quantum entanglement in fermionic many-body systems. From both analytical and numerical computations in free and interacting fermion systems in 1D and 2D, we find the disorder operator and the entanglement entropy exhibit similar universal scaling behavior, as a function of the boundary length of the subsystem, but with subtle yet important differences. In 1D they both follow the $\log{L}$ scaling behavior with the coefficient determined by the Luttinger parameter for disorder operator, and the conformal central charge for entanglement entropy. In 2D they both show the universal $L\log L$ scaling behavior in free and interacting Fermi liquid states, with the coefficients depending on the geometry of the Fermi surfaces. However at a 2D quantum critical point with non-Fermi-liquid state, extra symmetry information is needed in the design of the disorder operator, so as to reveal the critical fluctuations as does the entanglement entropy. Our results demonstrate the fermion disorder operator can be used to probe quantum many-body entanglement related to global symmetry, and provides new tools to explore the still largely unknown territory of highly entangled fermion quantum matter in 2 or higher dimensions.

Geometrically frustrated self-assembly of hyperbolic crystals from icosahedral nanoparticles

Geometric frustration is a fundamental concept in various areas of physics, and its role in self-assembly processes has recently been recognized as a source of intricate self-limited structures. Here we present an analytic theory of the geometrically frustrated self-assembly of regular icosahedral nanoparticle based on the non-Euclidean crystal {3, 5, 3} formed by icosahedra in hyperbolic space. By considering the minimization of elastic and repulsion energies, we characterize prestressed morphologies in this self-assembly system. Notably, the morphology exhibits a transition that is controlled by the size of the assembled cluster, leading to the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry.

Topological exact flat bands in two dimensional materials under periodic strain

We study flat bands and their topology in 2D materials with quadratic band crossing points (QBCPs) under periodic strain. In contrast to Dirac points in graphene, where strain acts as a vector potential, strain for QBCPs serves as a director potential with angular momentum $\ell=2$. We prove that when the strengths of the strain fields hit certain ``magic" values, exact flat bands with $C=\pm 1$ emerge at charge neutrality point in the chiral limit, in strong analogy to magic angle twisted bilayer graphene. These flat bands have ideal quantum geometry for the realization of fractional Chern insulators, and they are always fragile topological. The number of flat bands can be doubled for certain point group, and the interacting Hamiltonian is exactly solvable at integer fillings. We further demonstrate the stability of these flat bands against deviations from the chiral limit, and discuss possible realization in 2D materials.

Trading Syntax Trees for Wordpieces: Target-oriented Opinion Words Extraction with Wordpieces and Aspect Enhancement

State-of-the-art target-oriented opinion word extraction (TOWE) models typically use BERT-based text encoders that operate on the word level, along with graph convolutional networks (GCNs) that incorporate syntactic information extracted from syntax trees. These methods achieve limited gains with GCNs and have difficulty using BERT wordpieces. Meanwhile, BERT wordpieces are known to be effective at representing rare words or words with insufficient context information. To address this issue, this work trades syntax trees for BERT wordpieces by entirely removing the GCN component from the methods' architectures. To enhance TOWE performance, we tackle the issue of aspect representation loss during encoding. Instead of solely utilizing a sentence as the input, we use a sentence-aspect pair. Our relatively simple approach achieves state-of-the-art results on benchmark datasets and should serve as a strong baseline for further research.
