Thickness-dependent magnetic order in CrI$_3$ single crystals

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic ferromagnetism provide unique opportunity to engineer new functionalities in nano-spintronics. One such material is CrI$_3$, showing long-range magnetic order in monolayer with the Curie temperature ($T_c$) of 45 K. Here we study detailed evolution of magnetic transition and magnetic critical properties in response to systematic reduction in crystal thickness down to 50 nm. Bulk $T_c$ of 61 K is gradually suppressed to 57 K, however, the satellite transition at $T^*$ = 45 K is observed layer-independent at fixed magnetic field of 1 kOe. The origin of $T^*$ is proposed to be a crossover from pinning to depinning of magnetic domain walls. The reduction of thickness facilitates a field-driven metamagnetic transition around 20 kOe with out-of-plane field, in contrast to the continuous changes with in-plane field. The critical analysis around $T_c$ elucidates the mean-field type interactions in microscale-thick CrI$_3$.

The theory of N-Mixed-Spin-P fields

This is the first part of the project toward proving the BCOV's Feymann graph sum formula of all genera Gromov-Witten invariants of quintic Calabi-Yau threefolds. In this paper, we introduce the notion of N-Mixed-Spin-P fields, construct their moduli spaces, their virtual cycles, their virtual localization formulas, and a vanishing result associated with irregular graphs.

Formation of Graphene atop a Si adlayer on the C-face of SiC

The structure of the SiC(000-1) surface, the C-face of the {0001} SiC surfaces, is studied as a function of temperature and of pressure in a gaseous environment of disilane (Si2H6). Various surface reconstructions are observed, both with and without the presence of an overlying graphene layer (which spontaneously forms at sufficiently high temperatures). Based on cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements, the interface structure that forms in the presence of the graphene is found to contain 1.4 - 1.7 monolayers (ML) of Si, a somewhat counter-intuitive result since, when the graphene forms, the system is actually under C-rich conditions. Using ab initio thermodynamics, it is demonstrated that there exists a class of Si-rich surfaces containing about 1.3 ML of Si that are stable on the surface (even under C-rich conditions) at temperatures above about 400 K. The structures that thus form consist of Si adatoms atop a Si adlayer on the C-face of SiC, with or without the presence of overlying graphene.

Cost-Driven Offloading for DNN-based Applications over Cloud, Edge and End Devices

Currently, deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved a great success in various applications. Traditional deployment for DNNs in the cloud may incur a prohibitively serious delay in transferring input data from the end devices to the cloud. To address this problem, the hybrid computing environments, consisting of the cloud, edge and end devices, are adopted to offload DNN layers by combining the larger layers (more amount of data) in the cloud and the smaller layers (less amount of data) at the edge and end devices. A key issue in hybrid computing environments is how to minimize the system cost while accomplishing the offloaded layers with their deadline constraints. In this paper, a self-adaptive discrete particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm using the genetic algorithm (GA) operators was proposed to reduce the system cost caused by data transmission and layer execution. This approach considers the characteristics of DNNs partitioning and layers offloading over the cloud, edge and end devices. The mutation operator and crossover operator of GA were adopted to avert the premature convergence of PSO, which distinctly reduces the system cost through enhanced population diversity of PSO. The proposed offloading strategy is compared with benchmark solutions, and the results show that our strategy can effectively reduce the cost of offloading for DNN-based applications over the cloud, edge and end devices relative to the benchmarks.

Measuring the tilt of primordial gravitational-wave power spectrum from observations

Primordial gravitational waves generated during inflation lead to the B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background and a stochastic gravitational wave background in the Universe. We will explore the current constraint on the tilt of primordial gravitational-wave spectrum, and forecast how the future observations can improve the current constraint.

Generative Steganography by Sampling

In this paper, a novel data-driven information hiding scheme called generative steganography by sampling (GSS) is proposed. Unlike in traditional modification-based steganography, in our method the stego image is directly sampled by a powerful generator: no explicit cover is used. Both parties share a secret key used for message embedding and extraction. The Jensen-Shannon divergence is introduced as a new criterion for evaluating the security of generative steganography. Based on these principles, we propose a simple practical generative steganography method that uses semantic image inpainting. The message is written in advance to an uncorrupted region that needs to be retained in the corrupted image. Then, the corrupted image with the secret message is fed into a Generator trained by a generative adversarial network (GAN) for semantic completion. Message loss and prior loss terms are proposed for penalizing message extraction error and unrealistic stego image. In our design, we first train a generator whose training target is the generation of new data samples from the same distribution as that of existing training data. Next, for the trained generator, backpropagation to the message and prior loss are introduced to optimize the coding of the input noise data for the generator. The presented experiments demonstrate the potential of the proposed framework based on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the generated stego images.

Preliminary study on the modal decomposition of Hermite Gaussian beams via deep learning

The Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes make up a complete and orthonormal basis, which have been extensively used to describe optical fields. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, deep learning-based modal decomposition (MD) of HG beams. This method offers a fast, economical and robust way to acquire both the power content and phase information through a single-shot beam intensity image, which will be beneficial for the beam shaping, beam quality assessment, studies of resonator perturbations, and other further research on the HG beams.

On the mathematics and physics of Mixed Spin P-Fields

We outline various developments of affine and general Landau Ginzburg models in physics. We then describe the A-twisting and coupling to gravity in terms of Algebraic Geometry. We describe constructions of various path integral measures (virtual fundamental class) using the algebro-geometric technique of cosection localization, culminating in the theory of ``Mixed Spin P (MSP) fields" developed by the authors.

Deep learning enabled superfast and accurate M^2 evaluation for fiber beams

We introduce deep learning technique to predict the beam propagation factor M^2 of the laser beams emitting from few-mode fiber for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The deep convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained with paired data of simulated near-field beam patterns and their calculated M^2 value, aiming at learning a fast and accurate mapping from the former to the latter. The trained deep CNN can then be utilized to evaluate M^2 of the fiber beams from single beam patterns. The results of simulated testing samples have shown that our scheme can achieve an averaged prediction error smaller than 2% even when up to 10 eigenmodes are involved in the fiber. The error becomes slightly larger when heavy noises are added into the input beam patterns but still smaller than 2.5%, which further proves the accuracy and robustness of our method. Furthermore, the M^2 estimation takes only about 5 ms for a prepared beam pattern with one forward pass, which can be adopted for real-time M^2 determination with only one supporting Charge-Coupled Device (CCD). The experimental results further prove the feasibility of our scheme. Moreover, the method we proposed can be confidently extended to other kinds of beams provided that adequate training samples are accessible. Deep learning paves the way to superfast and accurate M^2 evaluation with very low experimental efforts.

Network analysis of synonymous codon usage

Most amino acids are encoded by multiple synonymous codons. For an amino acid, some of its synonymous codons are used much more rarely than others. Analyses of positions of such rare codons in protein sequences revealed that rare codons can impact co-translational protein folding and that positions of some rare codons are evolutionary conserved. Analyses of positions of rare codons in proteins' 3-dimensional structures, which are richer in biochemical information than sequences alone, might further explain the role of rare codons in protein folding. We analyze a protein set recently annotated with codon usage information, considering non-redundant proteins with sufficient structural information. We model the proteins' structures as networks and study potential differences between network positions of amino acids encoded by evolutionary conserved rare, evolutionary non-conserved rare, and commonly used codons. In 84% of the proteins, at least one of the three codon categories occupies significantly more or less network-central positions than the other codon categories. Different protein groups showing different codon centrality trends (i.e., different types of relationships between network positions of the three codon categories) are enriched in different biological functions, implying the existence of a link between codon usage, protein folding, and protein function.

A Deep-learning-based Joint Inference for Secure Spatial Modulation Receiver

As a green and secure wireless transmission way, secure spatial modulation (SM) is becoming a hot research area. Its basic idea is to exploit both the index of activated transmit antenna and amplitude phase modulation (APM) signal to carry messages, improve security, and save energy. In this paper, we reviewed its crucial techniques: transmit antenna selection (TAS), artificial noise (AN) projection, power allocation (PA), and joint detection at desired receiver. To achieve the optimal performance of maximum likelihood (ML) detector, a deep-neural-network (DNN) joint detector is proposed to jointly infer the index of transmit antenna and signal constellation point with a lower-complexity. Here, each layer of DNN is redesigned to optimize the joint inference performance of two distinct types of information: transmit antenna index and signal constellation point. Simulation results show that the proposed DNN method performs 3dB better than the conventional DNN structure and is close to ML detection in the low and medium signal-to-noise ratio regions in terms of the bit error rate (BER) performance, but its complexity is far lower-complexity compared to ML. Finally, three key techniques TAS, PA, and AN projection at transmitter can be combined to make SM a true secure modulation.

Joint Optimization of a UAV's Trajectory and Transmit Power for Covert Communications

This work considers covert communications in the context of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks, aiming to hide a UAV for transmitting critical information out of a scenario that is monitored and where communication is not allowed. Specifically, the UAV as a transmitter intends to transmit information to a legitimate receiver (Bob) covertly in order to avoid being detected by a warden (Willie) with location uncertainties at Bob and/or Willie. In order to enhance the considered covert communication performance, we prefer to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory and transmit power in terms of maximizing the average covert transmission rate from the UAV to Bob subject to transmission outage constraint and covertness constraint. The formulated optimization problem is difficult to tackle directly due to the intractable constraints. As such, we first employ conservative approximation to transform a constraint into a deterministic form and then apply the first-order restrictive approximation to transform the optimization problem into a convex form. By applying the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique, an efficient iterative algorithm is developed to solve the optimization problem. Our examination shows that the developed joint trajectory and transmit power optimization scheme achieves significantly better covert communication performance as compared to a benchmark scheme.

Quantum Simulation of the Non-Fermi-Liquid State of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model incorporates rich physics, ranging from exotic non-Fermi liquid states without quasiparticle excitations, to holographic duality and quantum chaos. However, its experimental realization remains a daunting challenge due to various unnatural ingredients of the SYK Hamiltonian such as its strong randomness and fully nonlocal fermion interaction. At present, constructing such a nonlocal Hamiltonian and exploring its dynamics is best through digital quantum simulation, where state-of-the-art techniques can already handle a moderate number of qubits. Here we demonstrate a first step towards simulation of the SYK model on a nuclear-spin-chain simulator. We observed the fermion paring instability of the non-Fermi liquid state and the chaotic-nonchaotic transition at simulated temperatures, as was predicted by previous theories. As the realization of the SYK model in practice, our experiment opens a new avenue towards investigating the key features of non-Fermi liquid states, as well as the quantum chaotic systems and the AdS/CFT duality.

UAV-Enabled Covert Wireless Data Collection

This work considers unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks for collecting data covertly from ground users. The full-duplex UAV intends to gather critical information from a scheduled user (SU) through wireless communication and generate artificial noise (AN) with random transmit power in order to ensure a negligible probability of the SU's transmission being detected by the unscheduled users (USUs). To enhance the system performance, we jointly design the UAV's trajectory and its maximum AN transmit power together with the user scheduling strategy subject to practical constraints, e.g., a covertness constraint, which is explicitly determined by analyzing each USU's detection performance, and a binary constraint induced by user scheduling. The formulated design problem is a mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem, which is challenging to solve directly, but tackled by our developed penalty successive convex approximation (P-SCA) scheme. An efficient UAV trajectory initialization is also presented based on the Successive Hover-and-Fly (SHAF) trajectory, which also serves as a benchmark scheme. Our examination shows the developed P-SCA scheme significantly outperforms the benchmark scheme in terms of achieving a higher max-min average transmission rate from all the SUs to the UAV.

Image steganography is dedicated to hiding secret messages in digital images, and has achieved the purpose of covert communication. Recently, research on image steganography has demonstrated great potential for using GAN and neural networks. In this paper we review different strategies for steganography such as cover modification, cover selection and cover synthesis by GANs, and discuss the characteristics of these methods as well as evaluation metrics and provide some possible future research directions in image steganography.

An Efficient Strategy to Generate Atom Connecting Positions

Atom connecting positions(ACPs) are positions where an atom is connecting to another one or a few atoms, which is needed when constructing final state used in chain-of-state(CoS) methods for transition state(TS) locating and minimum energy path(MEP) searching, especially with bond formation. However, ACPs are generated with chemical insight and experience, which is not only low efficient and time wasting, but the manually generated structure may be far from the optimized one. A efficient method is presented here for generating ACPs which is based on spherical optimization and VSEPR theory without manual interfering. Several examples are testified to prove the efficiency and robustness of the method.

Inflation model selection revisited

We update the constraints on the power spectra of primordial curvature perturbation and tensor perturbation including Planck data 2015 (P15) and recently released BICEP2/Keck data (BK15), Baryon Acoustic Oscillation data and the Type Ia supernovae data. We find that the upper limits of tensor-to-scalar ratio are $0.061$, $0.064$ and $0.072$ at $95\%$ confidence level (CL) in the $Λ$CDM+$r$, $Λ$CDM+$r$+$α_s$ and $Λ$CDM+$r$+$α_s$+$β_s$ models respectively, where $α_s$ and $β_s$ are the running of scalar spectral index and running of running. The inflation model with a concave potential is favored at more than $95\%$ CL. In addition, parametrizing the slow-roll parameter $ε\sim 1/N^p$, where $N$ is the e-folding number before the end of inflation and taken in the range of $[50,60]$ and $[14,75]$ respectively, we conclude that the inflation model with a monomial potential $V(ϕ)\sim ϕ^n$ is disfavored at more than $95\%$ CL, and both the Starobinsky inflation model and brane inflation model are still consistent with the data.

A Distributed Approach towards Discriminative Distance Metric Learning

Distance metric learning is successful in discovering intrinsic relations in data. However, most algorithms are computationally demanding when the problem size becomes large. In this paper, we propose a discriminative metric learning algorithm, and develop a distributed scheme learning metrics on moderate-sized subsets of data, and aggregating the results into a global solution. The technique leverages the power of parallel computation. The algorithm of the aggregated distance metric learning (ADML) scales well with the data size and can be controlled by the partition. We theoretically analyse and provide bounds for the error induced by the distributed treatment. We have conducted experimental evaluation of ADML, both on specially designed tests and on practical image annotation tasks. Those tests have shown that ADML achieves the state-of-the-art performance at only a fraction of the cost incurred by most existing methods.
