Beyond intensity modulation: new approaches to pump-probe microscopy

Pump-probe microscopy is an emerging nonlinear imaging technique based on high repetition rate lasers and fast intensity modulation. Here we present new methods for pump-probe microscopy that keep the beam intensity constant and instead modulate the inter-pulse time delay, the relative polarization, or the pulse length. These techniques can improve image quality for samples that have poor heat dissipation or long-lived radiative states, and can selectively address nonlinear interactions in the sample. We experimentally demonstrate this approach and point out the advantages over conventional intensity modulation.

Hom-Lie Algebras and Hom-Lie Groups, Integration and Differentiation

In this paper, we introduce the notion of a (regular) Hom-Lie group. We associate a Hom-Lie algebra to a Hom-Lie group and show that every regular Hom-Lie algebra is integrable. Then, we define a Hom-exponential (Hexp) map from the Hom-Lie algebra of a Hom-Lie group to the Hom-Lie group and discuss the universality of this Hexp map. We also describe a Hom-Lie group action on a smooth manifold. Subsequently, we give the notion of an adjoint representation of a Hom-Lie group on its Hom-Lie algebra. At last, we integrate the Hom-Lie algebra $(\mathfrak{gl}(V),[\cdot,\cdot],\mathsf{Ad})$, and the derivation Hom-Lie algebra of a Hom-Lie algebra.

AIM 2020 Challenge on Learned Image Signal Processing Pipeline

This paper reviews the second AIM learned ISP challenge and provides the description of the proposed solutions and results. The participating teams were solving a real-world RAW-to-RGB mapping problem, where to goal was to map the original low-quality RAW images captured by the Huawei P20 device to the same photos obtained with the Canon 5D DSLR camera. The considered task embraced a number of complex computer vision subtasks, such as image demosaicing, denoising, white balancing, color and contrast correction, demoireing, etc. The target metric used in this challenge combined fidelity scores (PSNR and SSIM) with solutions' perceptual results measured in a user study. The proposed solutions significantly improved the baseline results, defining the state-of-the-art for practical image signal processing pipeline modeling.

Tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms

The static and dynamic electric-dipole polarizabilities and tune-out wavelengths for the ground state of Cs atoms are calculated by using a semiempirical relativistic configuration interaction plus core polarization approach. By considering the hyperfine splittings, the static and dynamic polarizabilities, hyperfine Stark shifts, and tune-out wavelengths of the hyperfine components of the ground level of $^{133}$Cs atoms are determined. It is found that the hyperfine shifts of the first primary tune-out wavelengths are about $-$0.0135 nm and 0.0106 nm, which are very close to the hyperfine interaction energies. Additionally, the contribution of the tensor polarizability to the tune-out wavelengths is determined to be about $10^{-5} \sim 10^{-6}$ nm.

Galilean-Invariant XEFT at Next-to-Leading Order

XEFT is a low-energy effective field theory for charm mesons and pions that provides a systematically improvable description of the $X(3872)$ resonance. To simplify calculations beyond leading order, we introduce a new formulation of XEFT with a dynamical field for a pair of charm mesons in the resonant channel. We simplify the renormalization of XEFT by introducing a new renormalization scheme that involves the subtraction of amplitudes at the complex $D^{*0} \bar D^0$ threshold. The new formulation and the new renormalization scheme are illustrated by calculating the complex pole energy of $X$ and the $D^{*0} \bar D^0$ scattering amplitude to next-to-leading order using Galilean-invariant XEFT.

Synthetic high-order PT symmetry in a single coil resonator

The exploration of non-Hermitian systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry has witnessed immense research interest both fundamentally and technologically in a wide range of subject areas in physics and engineering. One significant example of the principal emerging fields in this context is the PT symmetric wireless applications using multiple coils that are spatially separated but mutually coupled with position-dependent coupling strength. Such a spatial PT configuration limits the flexibility and miniaturization of the PT symmetric designs. As far as this is concerned, inspired by scattering induced two opposite whispering-gallery (WG) modes in an optical resonator, analogously here we experimentally demonstrate a specially constructed second-order (2-nd order) PT symmetry in a single coil resonator, whose currents with two different directions are excited by internal bypass capacitor. Our proposed structure has the following peculiar feature: First, the bypass capacitor induces coupling in spectral resonances allow us to observe a 2-nd order phase transition between symmetry regimes, without the need of a second coil in the spatial PT case. Under this circumstance, this specially constructed PT symmetry can be regarded as synthetic PT symmetry, which is enabled by coupling modes with different directions. Second, by introducing two or more internal bypass capacitors, the synthetic high-order PT symmetric system bearing such as third-order exceptional point in a single coil resonator can be realized. These results will provide a new paradigm to realize higher-order PT symmetry towards the investigation of non-Hermitian physics in a synthetic perspective, which can be extended to other physical platforms such as optics and acoustics.

Digital pathology-based study of cell- and tissue-level morphologic features in serous borderline ovarian tumor and high-grade serous ovarian cancer

Serous borderline ovarian tumor (SBOT) and high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) are two distinct subtypes of epithelial ovarian tumors, with markedly different biologic background, behavior, prognosis, and treatment. However, the histologic diagnosis of serous ovarian tumors can be subjectively variable and labor-intensive as multiple tumor slides/blocks need to be thoroughly examined to search for these features. In this study, we aimed to evaluate technical feasibility of using digital pathological approaches to facilitate objective and scalable diagnosis screening for SBOT and HGSOC. Based on Groovy scripts and QuPath, a novel informatics system was developed to facilitate interactive annotation and imaging data exchange for machine learning purposes. Through this developed system, cellular boundaries were detected and expanded set of cellular features were extracted to represent cell- and tissue-level characteristics. According to our evaluation, cell-level classification was accurately achieved for both tumor and stroma cells with greater than 90% accuracy. Upon further re-examinations, 44.2% of the misclassified cells were due to over-/under-segmentations or low-quality of imaging areas. For a total number of 6,485 imaging patches with sufficient tumor and stroma cells (ten of each at least), we achieved 91-95% accuracy to differentiate HGSOC v. SBOT. When all the patches were considered for a WSI to make consensus prediction, 97% accuracy was achieved for accurately classifying all patients, indicating that cellular features digitally extracted from pathological images can be used for cell classification and SBOT v. HGSOC differentiation. Introducing digital pathology into ovarian cancer research could be beneficial to discover potential clinical implications.

Defending Against Adversarial Attacks in Transmission- and Distribution-level PMU Data

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) provide high-fidelity data that improve situation awareness of electric power grid operations. PMU datastreams inform wide-area state estimation, monitor area control error, and facilitate event detection in real time. As PMU data become more available and increasingly reliable, these devices are found in new roles within control systems, such as remedial action schemes and early warning detection systems. As with other cyber physical systems, maintaining data integrity and security pose a significant challenge for power system operators. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of multiple machine learning techniques to detect malicious data injection within PMU data streams. The two datasets used in this study come from two PMU networks: an inter-university, research-grade distribution network spanning three institutions in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and a utility transmission network from the Bonneville Power Administration. We implement the detection algorithms with TensorFlow, an open-source software library for machine learning, and the results demonstrate potential for distributing the training workload and achieving higher performance, while maintaining effectiveness in the detection of spoofed data.

Efficient and Accurate Simulations of Vibrational and Electronic Spectra with Symmetry-Preserving Neural Network Models for Tensorial Properties

Machine learning has revolutionized the high-dimensional representations for molecular properties such as potential energy. However, there are scarce machine learning models targeting tensorial properties, which are rotationally covariant. Here, we propose tensorial neural network (NN) models to learn both tensorial response and transition properties, in which atomic coordinate vectors are multiplied with scalar NN outputs or their derivatives to preserve the rotationally covariant symmetry. This strategy keeps structural descriptors symmetry invariant so that the resulting tensorial NN models are as efficient as their scalar counterparts. We validate the performance and universality of this approach by learning response properties of water oligomers and liquid water, and transition dipole moment of a model structural unit of proteins. Machine learned tensorial models have enabled efficient simulations of vibrational spectra of liquid water and ultraviolet spectra of realistic proteins, promising feasible and accurate spectroscopic simulations for biomolecules and materials.

Atomic origin for hydrogenation promoted bulk oxygen vacancies removal in vanadium dioxide

Oxygen vacancies (VO), a common type of point defects in metal oxides materials, play important roles on the physical and chemical properties. To obtain stoichiometric oxide crystal, the pre-existing VO is always removed via careful post-annealing treatment at high temperature in air or oxygen atmosphere. However, the annealing conditions is difficult to control and the removal of VO in bulk phase is restrained due to high energy barrier of VO migration. Here, we selected VO2 crystal film as the model system and developed an alternative annealing treatment aided by controllable hydrogen doping, which can realizes effective removal of VO defects in VO2-δ crystal at lower temperature. This finding is attributed to the hydrogenation accelerated oxygen vacancies recovery in VO2-δ crystal. Theoretical calculations revealed that the H-doping induced electrons are prone to accumulate around the oxygen defects in VO2-δ film, which facilitates the diffusion of VO and thus makes it easier to be removed. The methodology is expected to be applied to other metal oxides for oxygen-related point defects control.

Three Jahn-Teller states of matter in the spin-crossover system Mn(taa)

Three high-spin phases recently discovered in the spin-crossover system Mn(taa) are identified through analysis by a combination of first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulation as a low-temperature Jahn-Teller ordered (solid) phase, an intermediate-temperature dynamically correlated (liquid) phase, and an uncorrelated (gas) phase. In particular, the Jahn-Teller liquid phase arises from competition between mixing with low-spin impurities, which drive the disorder, and inter-molecular strain interactions. The latter are a key factor in both the spin-crossover phase transition and the magnetoelectric coupling. Jahn-Teller liquids may exist in other spin-crossover materials and materials that have multiple equivalent Jahn-Teller axes.

Charm-meson Triangle Singularity in ${e^+e^-}$ Annihilation into ${ D^{*0} \bar{D}^0 + γ}$

We calculate the cross section for $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into $D^{*0} \bar D^0 +γ$ at center-of-mass energies near the $D^{*0} \bar D^{*0}$ threshold under the assumption that $X(3872)$ is a weakly bound charm meson molecule. The Dalitz plot has a $\bar D^{*0}$ resonance band in the squared invariant mass $t$ of $\bar D^0 γ$. In the limit as the decay width of the $D^{*0}$ goes to 0, the Dalitz plot also has a narrow band in the squared invariant mass $u$ of $D^{*0} \bar D^0$ from a charm-meson triangle singularity. At the physical value of the $D^{*0}$ width, the narrow band reduces to a shoulder. Thus the triangle singularity cannot be observed directly as a peak in a differential cross section as a function of $u$. It may however be observed indirectly as a local minimum in the $t$ distribution for events with $u$ below the triangle singularity. The minimum is produced by the Schmid cancellation between triangle loop diagrams and a tree diagram. The observation of this minimum would support the identification of $X(3872)$ as a weakly bound charm meson molecule.

Crossed-beam pump-probe microscopy

We present a new imaging method for pump-probe microscopy that explores non-collinear excitation. This method (crossed-beam pump-probe microscopy, or CBPM) can significantly improve the axial resolution when imaging through low-NA lenses, providing an alternative way for depth resolved, large field-of-view imaging. We performed a proof-of-concept demonstration, characterized CBPM's resolution using different imaging lenses, and measured an enhanced axial resolution for certain types of low-NA lenses.

Production and constraints for a massive dark photon at electron-positron colliders

Dark sector may couple to the Standard Model via one or more mediator particles. We discuss two types of mediators: the dark photon $A^{\prime}$ and the dark scalar mediator $ϕ$. The total cross-sections and various differential distributions of the processes $e^{+} e^{-} \rightarrow q \bar{q} A^{\prime}$ and $e^{+} e^{-} \rightarrow q \bar{q} ϕ$ ($q=u,~d,~c,~s$ and $b$ quarks) are discussed. We focus on the study of the invisible $A^{\prime}$ due to the cleaner background at future $e^{+} e^{-}$ colliders. It is found that the kinematic distributions of the two-jet system could be used to identify (or exclude) the dark photon and the dark scalar mediator, as well as to distinguish between them. We further study the possibility of a search for dark photons at a future CEPC experiment with $\sqrt{s}=$ 91.2 GeV and 240 GeV. With CEPC running at $\sqrt{s}=$ 91.2 GeV, it would be possible to perform a decisive measurement of the dark photon (20 GeV $< m_{A^{\prime}} <$ 60 GeV) in less than one operating year. The lower limits of the integrated luminosity for the significance $S/\sqrt{B}=$ 2$σ$, 3$σ$ and 5$σ$ are presented.

Revisiting and Evaluating Software Side-channel Vulnerabilities and Countermeasures in Cryptographic Applications

We systematize software side-channel attacks with a focus on vulnerabilities and countermeasures in the cryptographic implementations. Particularly, we survey past research literature to categorize vulnerable implementations, and identify common strategies to eliminate them. We then evaluate popular libraries and applications, quantitatively measuring and comparing the vulnerability severity, response time and coverage. Based on these characterizations and evaluations, we offer some insights for side-channel researchers, cryptographic software developers and users. We hope our study can inspire the side-channel research community to discover new vulnerabilities, and more importantly, to fortify applications against them.

Electron-proton Co-doping Induced Metal-insulator Transition in VO2 Film via Surface Self-assembled Ascorbic Acid Molecules

Charge doping is an effective way to induce metal-insulate transition (MIT) in correlated materials for many important utilizations, which is however practically limited by problem of low stability. In this study, we have achieved pronounced phase modulation and stabilized the metallic state of monoclinic vanadium dioxide (VO2) at room temperature, via a novel electron-proton co-doping mechanism driven by surface absorption of self-assembled L-ascorbic acid (AA) molecules. The ionized AA- species in solution donate effective electrons to the adsorbed VO2 surface, which then electrostatically attract surrounding protons to penetrate, and eventually results in stable hydrogen-doped metallic VO2. The variations of phase and electronic structures as well as the electron occupancy of V-3d/O-2p hybrid orbitals were examined by synchrotron characterizations and first-principle theoretical simulations, which explain the formation of stable metallic state. Importantly, the adsorbed molecules protect hydrogen dopants from escaping out of lattice and thereby stabilize the metallic phase for VO2. Such an electron-proton co-doping mechanism driven by suitable molecules absorption would open a new door for engineering properties of correlated oxide materials.

Excited heavy quarkonium production in Higgs boson decays

The rare decay channels of Higgs boson to heavy quarkonium offer vital opportunities to explore the coupling of Higgs to heavy quarks. We study the semi-exclusive decay channels of Higgs boson to heavy quarkonia, i.e., $H^0\to |(Q\bar{Q^{\prime}})[n]\rangle+\bar{Q}Q^{\prime}$ ($Q^{(\prime)}=c~\text{or}~b$ quark) within the NRQCD framework. In addition to the lower-level Fock states $|(Q\bar{Q'})[1S]\rangle$ continent, contributions of high excited states $|(Q\bar{Q'})[2S]\rangle$, $|(Q\bar{Q'})[3S]\rangle$, $|(Q\bar{Q'})[4S]\rangle$, $|(Q\bar{Q'})[1P]\rangle$, $|(Q\bar{Q'})[2P]\rangle$, $|(Q\bar{Q'})[3P]\rangle$ and $|(Q\bar{Q'})[4P]\rangle$ are also studied. According to our study, the contributions of high excited Fock states should be considered seriously. Differential distributions of total decay width with respect to invariant-mass and angles, as well as uncertainties caused by non-perturbative hadronic non-perturbative matrix elements are discussed. If all excited heavy quarkonium states decay to the ground spin-singlet state through electromagnetic or hadronic interactions, we obtain the decay widths for $|(Q\bar{Q'})\rangle$ quarkonium production through $H^0$ semi-exclusive decays: $25.10^{+11.6\%}_{-51.6\%}$ keV for $|(b\bar{c})[n]\rangle$ meson, $3.23^{+0\%}_{-62.2\%}$ keV for $|(c\bar{c})[n]\rangle$ and $2.36^{+0\%}_{-57.1\%}$ keV for $|(b\bar{b})[n]\rangle$, where uncertainties are caused by adopting different non-perturbative potential models. At future high energy LHC ($\sqrt{s}=27$ TeV), numerical results show that sizable amounts of events for those high excited states can be produced, which implies that one could also consider exploring the coupling properties of Higgs to heavy quarks in these high excited states channels, especially for the charmonium and bottomonium.

Cross-lingual Data Transformation and Combination for Text Classification

Text classification is a fundamental task for text data mining. In order to train a generalizable model, a large volume of text must be collected. To address data insufficiency, cross-lingual data may occasionally be necessary. Cross-lingual data sources may however suffer from data incompatibility, as text written in different languages can hold distinct word sequences and semantic patterns. Machine translation and word embedding alignment provide an effective way to transform and combine data for cross-lingual data training. To the best of our knowledge, there has been little work done on evaluating how the methodology used to conduct semantic space transformation and data combination affects the performance of classification models trained from cross-lingual resources. In this paper, we systematically evaluated the performance of two commonly used CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) and RNN (Recurrent Neural Network) text classifiers with differing data transformation and combination strategies. Monolingual models were trained from English and French alongside their translated and aligned embeddings. Our results suggested that semantic space transformation may conditionally promote the performance of monolingual models. Bilingual models were trained from a combination of both English and French. Our results indicate that a cross-lingual classification model can significantly benefit from cross-lingual data by learning from translated or aligned embedding spaces.
