Lie theory and cohomology of relative Rota-Baxter operators

In this paper, we establish a local Lie theory for relative Rota-Baxter operators of weight $1$. First we recall the category of relative Rota-Baxter operators of weight $1$ on Lie algebras and construct a cohomology theory for them. We use the second cohomology group to study infinitesimal deformations of relative Rota-Baxter operators and modified $r$-matrices. Then we introduce a cohomology theory of relative Rota-Baxter operators on a Lie group. We construct the differentiation functor from the category of relative Rota-Baxter operators on Lie groups to that on Lie algebras, and extend it to the cohomology level by proving the Van Est theorem between the two cohomology theories. We integrate a relative Rota-Baxter operator of weight 1 on a Lie algebra to a local relative Rota-Baxter operator on the corresponding Lie group, and show that the local integration and differentiation are adjoint to each other. Finally, we give two applications of our integration of Rota-Baxter operators: one is to give an explicit formula for the factorization problem, and the other is to provide an integration for matched pairs.

Thickness-dependent spin bistable transitions in single-crystalline molecular 2D material

The advent of two-dimensional (2D) crystals has led to numerous scientific breakthroughs. Conventional 2D systems have in-plane covalent bonds and a weak out-of-plane van-der-Waals bond. Here we report a new type of 2D material composed of discrete magnetic molecules, where anisotropic van-der-Waals interactions bond the molecules into a 2D packing. Through mechanical exfoliation, we can obtain single-crystalline molecular monolayers, which can be readily integrated into other 2D systems. Optical spectroscopy suggests the few-layered molecules preserve the temperature-induced spin-crossover switching observed in the bulk form but show a drastic increase in thermal hysteresis unique to these thin 2D molecule assemblies. The trapping of spin bistability with decreasing layer number can arise from domain wall dynamics in reduced dimensions. Our results establish molecular solids with strong anisotropy of intermolecular interactions as precursors to a novel class of 2D materials, affording new possibilities to control functionalities through substrate and interlayer interactions.

Diabatic valence-hole states in the C$_2$ molecule: "Putting Humpty Dumpty together again"

Despite the long history of spectroscopic studies of the C$_2$ molecule, fundamental questions about its chemical bonding are still being hotly debated. The complex electronic structure of C$_2$ is a consequence of its dense manifold of near-degenerate, low-lying electronic states. A global multi-state diabatic model is proposed here to disentangle the numerous configuration interactions within four symmetry manifolds of C$_2$ ($^{1}Π_g$, $^{3}Π_g$, $^{1}Σ_u^+$, and $^{3}Σ_u^+$). The key concept of our model is the existence of two "valence-hole" configurations, $2σ_g^22σ_u^11π_{u}^33σ_g^2$ for $^{1,3}Π_g$ states and $2σ_g^22σ_u^11π_{u}^43σ_g^1$ for $^{1,3}Σ_u^+$ states that derive from $3σ_g\leftarrow2σ_u$ electron promotion. The lowest-energy state from each of the four C$_2$ symmetry species is dominated by this type of valence-hole configuration at its equilibrium internuclear separation. As a result of their large binding energy (nominal bond order of 3) and correlation with the 2s$^2$2p$^2$+2s2p$^3$ separated-atom configurations, the presence of these valence-hole configurations has a profound impact on the $global$ electronic structure and unimolecular dynamics of C$_2$.

Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search under Neural Similarity Metric for Large-Scale Recommendation

Model-based methods for recommender systems have been studied extensively for years. Modern recommender systems usually resort to 1) representation learning models which define user-item preference as the distance between their embedding representations, and 2) embedding-based Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) search to tackle the efficiency problem introduced by large-scale corpus. While providing efficient retrieval, the embedding-based retrieval pattern also limits the model capacity since the form of user-item preference measure is restricted to the distance between their embedding representations. However, for other more precise user-item preference measures, e.g., preference scores directly derived from a deep neural network, they are computationally intractable because of the lack of an efficient retrieval method, and an exhaustive search for all user-item pairs is impractical. In this paper, we propose a novel method to extend ANN search to arbitrary matching functions, e.g., a deep neural network. Our main idea is to perform a greedy walk with a matching function in a similarity graph constructed from all items. To solve the problem that the similarity measures of graph construction and user-item matching function are heterogeneous, we propose a pluggable adversarial training task to ensure the graph search with arbitrary matching function can achieve fairly high precision. Experimental results in both open source and industry datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The proposed method has been fully deployed in the Taobao display advertising platform and brings a considerable advertising revenue increase. We also summarize our detailed experiences in deployment in this paper.

Secure IoT Routing: Selective Forwarding Attacks and Trust-based Defenses in RPL Network

IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is an essential routing protocol to enable communications for IoT networks with low power devices. RPL uses an objective function and routing constraints to find an optimized routing path for each node in the network. However, recent research has shown that topological attacks, such as selective forwarding attacks, pose great challenges to the secure routing of IoT networks. Many conventional secure routing solutions, on the other hand, are computationally heavy to be directly applied in resource-constrained IoT networks. There is an urgent need to develop lightweight secure routing solutions for IoT networks. In this paper, we first design and implement a series of advanced selective forwarding attacks from the attack perspective, which can flexibly select the type and percentage of forwarding packets in an energy efficient way, and even bad-mouth other innocent nodes in the network. Experiment results show that the proposed attacks can maximize the attack consequences (i.e. number of dropped packets) while maintaining undetected. Moreover, we propose a lightweight trust-based defense solution to detect and eliminate malicious selective forwarding nodes from the network. The results show that the proposed defense solution can achieve high detection accuracy with very limited extra energy usage (i.e. 3.4%).

Deformations, cohomologies and integrations of relative difference Lie algebras

In this paper, first using the higher derived brackets, we give the controlling algebra of relative difference Lie algebras, which are also called crossed homomorphisms or differential Lie algebras of weight 1 when the action is the adjoint action. Then using Getzler's twisted $L_\infty$-algebra, we define the cohomology of relative difference Lie algebras. In particular, we define the regular cohomology of difference Lie algebras by which infinitesimal deformations of difference Lie algebras are classified. We also define the cohomology of difference Lie algebras with coefficients in arbitrary representations, and using the second cohomology group to classify abelian extensions of difference Lie algebras. Finally, we show that any relative difference Lie algebra can be integrated to a relative difference Lie group in a functorial way.

Long-range model of vibrational autoionization in core-nonpenetrating Rydberg states of NO

In high orbital angular momentum ($\ell \geq 3$) Rydberg states, the centrifugal barrier hinders close approach of the Rydberg electron to the ion-core. As a result, these core-nonpenetrating Rydberg states can be well described by a simplified model in which the Rydberg electron is only weakly perturbed by the long-range electric properties (i.e., multipole moments and polarizabilities) of the ion-core. We have used a long-range model to describe the vibrational autoionization dynamics of high-$\ell$ Rydberg states of nitric oxide (NO). In particular, our model explains the extensive angular momentum exchange between the ion-core and Rydberg electron that had been previously observed in vibrational autoionization of $f$ ($\ell=3$) Rydberg states. These results shed light on a long-standing mechanistic question around these previous observations, and support a direct, vibrational mechanism of autoionization over an indirect, predissociation-mediated mechanism. In addition, our model correctly predicts newly measured total decay rates of $g$ ($\ell=4$) Rydberg states because, for $\ell\geq4$, the non-radiative decay is dominated by autoionization rather than predissociation. We examine the predicted NO$^+$ ion rotational state distributions generated by vibrational autoionization of $g$ states and discuss applications of our model to achieve quantum state selection in the production of molecular ions.

Production of excited heavy quarkonia in $e^+e^- \to γ^*/Z^0 \to |(Q\bar{Q})[n]\rangle +γ$ at super $Z$ factory

Within the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics framework, we make a comprehensive study on the exclusive production of excited charmonium and bottomonium in $e^+e^-\to γ^*/Z^0 \to|(Q\bar{Q})[n]\rangle +γ$ ($Q=c$ or $b$ quarks) at future $Z$ factory, where the $[n]$ represents the color-singlet $n^1S_0,~n^3S_1,~n^1P_0$ and $n^3P_J$ ($n=1,2,3,4; J=0,1,2$) Fock states. The "improved trace technology" is adopted to derive the analytic expressions at the amplitude level, which is useful for calculating the complicated $nP$-wave channels. Total cross sections, differential distributions, and uncertainties are discussed in system. According to our study, production rates of heavy quarkonia of high excited Fock states are considerable at future $Z$ factory. The cross sections of charmonium for $2S$, $3S$, $4S$, $1P$, $2P$, $3P$ and $4P$-wave states are about $53.5\%$, $30.4\%$, $23.7\%$, $13.7\%$, $6.8\%$, $9.2\%$, and $9.2\%$ of that of the $1S$ state, respectively. And cross sections of bottomonium for $2S$, $3S$, $4S$, $1P$, $2P$, $3P$ and $4P$-wave states are about $39.3\%$, $12.3\%$, $14.3\%$, $7.1\%$, $3.1\%$, $2.7\%$, and $3.1\%$ of that of the $1S$ state, respectively. The main uncertainties come from the radial wave functions at the origin and their derivatives at the origin under different potential models. Then, such super $Z$ factory should be a good platform to study the properties of the high excited charmonium and bottomonium states.

Learning Dipole Moments and Polarizabilities

Machine learning of scalar molecular properties such as potential energy has enabled widespread applications. However, there are relatively few machine learning models targeting directional properties, including permanent and transition dipole (multipole) moments, as well as polarizability. These properties are essential to determine intermolecular forces and molecular spectra. In this chapter, we review machine learning models for these tensorial properties, with special focus on how to encode the rotational equivariance into these models by taking a similar form as the physical definition of these properties. You will then learn how to use an embedded atom neural network model to train dipole moments and polarizabilities of a representative molecule. The methodology discussed in this chapter can be extended to learn similar or higher-rank tensorial properties, such as magnetic dipole moments, non-adiabatic coupling vectors, and hyperpolarizabilities.

Low-Light Image and Video Enhancement Using Deep Learning: A Survey

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims at improving the perception or interpretability of an image captured in an environment with poor illumination. Recent advances in this area are dominated by deep learning-based solutions, where many learning strategies, network structures, loss functions, training data, etc. have been employed. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey to cover various aspects ranging from algorithm taxonomy to open issues. To examine the generalization of existing methods, we propose a low-light image and video dataset, in which the images and videos are taken by different mobile phones' cameras under diverse illumination conditions. Besides, for the first time, we provide a unified online platform that covers many popular LLIE methods, of which the results can be produced through a user-friendly web interface. In addition to qualitative and quantitative evaluation of existing methods on publicly available and our proposed datasets, we also validate their performance in face detection in the dark. This survey together with the proposed dataset and online platform could serve as a reference source for future study and promote the development of this research field. The proposed platform and dataset as well as the collected methods, datasets, and evaluation metrics are publicly available and will be regularly updated.

Representations and cohomologies of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and applications

In this paper, first we give the notion of a representation of a relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebra and introduce the cohomologies of a relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebra with coefficients in a representation. Then we classify abelian extensions of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras using the second cohomology group, and classify skeletal relative Rota-Baxter Lie 2-algebras using the third cohomology group as applications. At last, using the established general framework of representations and cohomologies of relative Rota-Baxter Lie algebras, we give the notion of representations of Rota-Baxter Lie algebras, which is consistent with representations of Rota-Baxter associative algebras in the literature, and introduce the cohomologies of Rota-Baxter Lie algebras with coefficients in a representation. Applications are also given to classify abelian extensions of Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and skeletal Rota-Baxter Lie 2-algebras.

Attention-guided Chained Context Aggregation for Semantic Segmentation

The way features propagate in Fully Convolutional Networks is of momentous importance to capture multi-scale contexts for obtaining precise segmentation masks. This paper proposes a novel series-parallel hybrid paradigm called the Chained Context Aggregation Module (CAM) to diversify feature propagation. CAM gains features of various spatial scales through chain-connected ladder-style information flows and fuses them in a two-stage process, namely pre-fusion and re-fusion. The serial flow continuously increases receptive fields of output neurons and those in parallel encode different region-based contexts. Each information flow is a shallow encoder-decoder with appropriate down-sampling scales to sufficiently capture contextual information. We further adopt an attention model in CAM to guide feature re-fusion. Based on these developments, we construct the Chained Context Aggregation Network (CANet), which employs an asymmetric decoder to recover precise spatial details of prediction maps. We conduct extensive experiments on six challenging datasets, including Pascal VOC 2012, Pascal Context, Cityscapes, CamVid, SUN-RGBD and GATECH. Results evidence that CANet achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Spatially-resolved insulator-metal transition for rewritable optical gratings

Doping is an effective way to tune the property of metal oxides1-5, for achieving functional oxide electronics6-8. Previously we developed a controllable hydrogen doping technology at ambient conditions by use of electron-proton synergistic doping strategy, which enables one to get rid of high-temperature/pressure treatments required by traditional technologies9. Here, based on this facile doping route, we achieve a visual and reversible insulator-metal transition (MIT) for tungsten trioxide (WO3) film. Its outstanding spatial selection is comparable to standard UV lithography, which shows the potential of becoming a viable way for rewritable WO3 grating device fabrication. Furthermore, the period of the obtained WO3 structural grating can also be easily changed for requirement by doping area selection. This advanced doping technology opens up alternative approaches for developing not only optical devices, but also rewritable ions devices and integrated circuits for various oxide electronics.

A Survey of Microarchitectural Side-channel Vulnerabilities, Attacks and Defenses in Cryptography

Side-channel attacks have become a severe threat to the confidentiality of computer applications and systems. One popular type of such attacks is the microarchitectural attack, where the adversary exploits the hardware features to break the protection enforced by the operating system and steal the secrets from the program. In this paper, we systematize microarchitectural side channels with a focus on attacks and defenses in cryptographic applications. We make three contributions. (1) We survey past research literature to categorize microarchitectural side-channel attacks. Since these are hardware attacks targeting software, we summarize the vulnerable implementations in software, as well as flawed designs in hardware. (2) We identify common strategies to mitigate microarchitectural attacks, from the application, OS and hardware levels. (3) We conduct a large-scale evaluation on popular cryptographic applications in the real world, and analyze the severity, practicality and impact of side-channel vulnerabilities. This survey is expected to inspire side-channel research community to discover new attacks, and more importantly, propose new defense solutions against them.

HDR Video Reconstruction with Tri-Exposure Quad-Bayer Sensors

We propose a novel high dynamic range (HDR) video reconstruction method with new tri-exposure quad-bayer sensors. Thanks to the larger number of exposure sets and their spatially uniform deployment over a frame, they are more robust to noise and spatial artifacts than previous spatially varying exposure (SVE) HDR video methods. Nonetheless, the motion blur from longer exposures, the noise from short exposures, and inherent spatial artifacts of the SVE methods remain huge obstacles. Additionally, temporal coherence must be taken into account for the stability of video reconstruction. To tackle these challenges, we introduce a novel network architecture that divides-and-conquers these problems. In order to better adapt the network to the large dynamic range, we also propose LDR-reconstruction loss that takes equal contributions from both the highlighted and the shaded pixels of HDR frames. Through a series of comparisons and ablation studies, we show that the tri-exposure quad-bayer with our solution is more optimal to capture than previous reconstruction methods, particularly for the scenes with larger dynamic range and objects with motion.

Production of $X(3872)$ at High Multiplicity

The dependence of the production of the $X(3872)$ meson on the hadron multiplicity in $pp$ collisions has been used as evidence against $X$ being a charm-meson molecule. The argument is based in part on the incorrect assumption that the cross section for the breakup of $X$ by scattering with comovers can be approximated by a geometric cross section inversely proportional to the binding energy of $X$. The breakup cross section should instead be approximated by the probability-weighted sum of the cross sections for the scattering of comoving pions from the charm-meson constituents of $X$, which is insensitive to the binding energy. A simple modification of the comover interaction model gives excellent fits to the data from the LHCb collaboration on the multiplicity dependence of the production of $X$ and $ψ(2S)$ using parameters compatible with $X$ being a loosely bound charm-meson molecule.

Robust Alignment of Multi-Exposed Images with Saturated Regions

It is challenging to align multi-exposed images due to large illumination variations, especially in presence of saturated regions. In this paper, a novel image alignment algorithm is proposed to cope with the multi-exposed images with saturated regions. Specifically, the multi-exposed images are first normalized by using intensity mapping functions (IMFs) in consideration of saturated pixels. Then, the normalized images are coded by using the local binary pattern (LBP). Finally, the coded images are aligned by formulating an optimization problem by using a differentiable Hamming distance. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art alignment methods for multi-exposed images in terms of alignment accuracy and robustness to exposure values.

Wireless power transfer via topological modes in dimer chains

The topological characteristics, including invariant topological orders, band inversion, and the topological edge mode (TEM) in the photonic insulators, have been widely studied. Whether people can take advantage of intriguing topological modes in simple one-dimensional systems to implement some practical applications is an issue which people are increasingly concerned about. In this work, based on a photonic dimer chain composed of ultra-subwavelength resonators, we verify experimentally that the TEM in the effective second-order parity-time (PT) system is immune to the inner disorder perturbation, and can be used to realize the long-range wireless power transfer (WPT) with high transmission efficiency. To intuitively show the TEM can be used for WPT, a power signal source is used to excite the TEM. It can be clearly seen that two LED lamps with 0.5-W at both ends of the structure are lighted up with the aid of TEMs. In addition, in order to solve the special technical problems of standby power loss and frequency tracking, we further propose that a WPT system with effective third-order PT symmetry can be constructed by using one topological interface mode and two TEMs. Inspired by the long-range WPT with TEMs in this work, it is expected to use more complex topological structures to achieve energy transmission with more functions, such as the WPT devices whose direction can be selected flexibly in the quasiperiodic or trimer topological chains.
