Algebraic Soft-Decision Decoding of Reed-Solomon Codes Using Bit-level Soft Information

The performance of algebraic soft-decision decoding of Reed-Solomon codes using bit-level soft information is investigated. Optimal multiplicity assignment strategies of algebraic soft-decision decoding with infinite cost are first studied over erasure channels and the binary symmetric channel. The corresponding decoding radii are calculated in closed forms and tight bounds on the error probability are derived. The multiplicity assignment strategy and the corresponding performance analysis are then generalized to characterize the decoding region of algebraic softdecision decoding over a mixed error and bit-level erasure channel. The bit-level decoding region of the proposed multiplicity assignment strategy is shown to be significantly larger than that of conventional Berlekamp-Massey decoding. As an application, a bit-level generalized minimum distance decoding algorithm is proposed. The proposed decoding compares favorably with many other Reed-Solomon soft-decision decoding algorithms over various channels. Moreover, owing to the simplicity of the proposed bit-level generalized minimum distance decoding, its performance can be tightly bounded using order statistics.

Top Hypercharge

We propose a top hypercharge model with gauge symmetry SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_1 x U(1)_2 where the first two families of the Standard Model (SM) fermions are charged under U(1)_1 while the third family is charged under U(1)_2. The U(1)_1 x U(1)_2 gauge symmetry is broken down to the U(1)_Y gauge symmetry, when a SM singlet Higgs field acquires a vacuum expectation value. We consider the electroweak constraints, and compare the fit to experimental observables to that of the SM. We study the quark CKM mixing between the first two families and the third family, the neutrino masses and mixing, the flavour changing neutral current effects in meson mixing and decays, the Z' discovery potential at the Large Hadron Collider, the dark matter with a gauged Z_2 symmetry, and the Higgs boson masses.

Long range forces and limits on unparticle interactions

Couplings between standard model particles and unparticles from a nontrivial scale invariant sector can lead to long range forces. If the forces couple to quantities such as baryon or lepton (electron) number, stringent limits result from tests of the gravitational inverse square law. These limits are much stronger than from collider phenomenology and astrophysics.

Supersymmetric Unparticle Effects on Higgs Boson Mass and Dark Matter

We propose a model that introduces a supersymmetric unparticle operator in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. We analyze the lowest dimension operator involving an unparticle. This operator behaves as a Standard Model gauge singlet and it introduces a new parameter into the Higgs potential which can provide an alternative way to relax the upper limit on the lightest Higgs boson mass. This operator also introduces several unparticle interactions which can induce a neutral Higgsino to decay into a spinor unparticle. It also induces violation of scale invariance around the electroweak scale. It is necessary for the scale of this violation to be larger than the lightest supersymmetric particle mass to maintain the latter as the usual weakly interacting massive particle dark matter candidate. An alternative is to have unparticle state as dark matter candidate. We also comment on some collider implications.

Spontaneous CP Violating Phase as The CKM Matrix Phase

We propose that the CP violating phase in the CKM mixing matrix is identical to the CP phases responsible for the spontaneous CP violation in the Higgs potential. A specific multi-Higgs model with Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is constructed to realize this idea. The CP violating phase does not vanish when all Higgs masses become large. There are flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions mediated by neutral Higgs bosons at the tree level. However, unlike general multi-Higgs models, the FCNC Yukawa couplings are fixed in terms of the quark masses and CKM mixing angles. Implications for meson-anti-meson mixing, including recent data on $D-\bar D$ mixing, and neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) are studied. We find that the neutral Higgs boson masses can be at the order of one hundred GeV. The neutron EDM can be close to the present experimental upper bound.

Testable Flipped SU(5) x U(1)_X Models

The little hierarchy between the GUT scale and the string scale may give us some hints that can be tested at the LHC. To achieve string-scale gauge coupling unification, we introduce additional vector-like particles. We require that these vector-like particles be standard, form complete GUT multiplets, and have masses around the TeV scale or close to the string scale. Interestingly, only the flipped SU(5) x U(1)_X models can work elegantly. We consider all possible sets of vector-like particles with masses around the TeV scale. And we introduce vector-like particles with masses close to the string scale which can mimic the string-scale threshold corrections. We emphasize that all of these vector-like particles can be obtained in the interesting flipped SU(5) x U(1)_X string models from the four-dimensional free fermionic string construction. Assuming the low-energy supersymmetry, high-scale supersymmetry, and split supersymmetry, we show that the string-scale gauge coupling unification can indeed be achieved in the flipped SU(5) x U(1)_X models. These models can be tested at the LHC by observing simple sets of vector-like particles at the TeV scale. Moreover, we discuss a simple flipped SU(5) x U(1)_X model with string-scale gauge coupling unification and high-scale supersymmetry by introducing only one pair of the vector-like particles at the TeV scale, and we predict the corresponding Higgs boson masses. Also, we briefly comment on the string-scale gauge coupling unification in the model with low-energy supersymmetry by introducing only one pair of the vector-like particles at the intermediate scale. And we briefly comment on the mixings among the SM fermions and the corresponding extra vector-like particles.

Implications of Canonical Gauge Coupling Unification in High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

We systematically construct two kinds of models with canonical gauge coupling unification and universal high-scale supersymmetry breaking. In the first we introduce standard vector-like particles while in the second we also include non-standard vector-like particles. We require that the gauge coupling unification scale is from 5 x 10^{15} GeV to the Planck scale, that the universal supersymmetry breaking scale is from 10 TeV to the unification scale, and that the masses of the vector-like particles (M_V) are universal and in the range from 200 GeV to 1 TeV. Using two-loop renormalization group equation (RGE) running for the gauge couplings and one-loop RGE running for Yukawa couplings and the Higgs quartic coupling, we calculate the supersymmetry breaking scales, the gauge coupling unification scales, and the corresponding Higgs mass ranges. When the vector-like particle masses are less than 1 TeV, these models can be tested at the LHC.

String Scale Gauge Coupling Unification with Vector-like Exotics and Non-Canonical U(1)_Y Normalization

We use a new approach to study string scale gauge coupling unification systematically, allowing both the possibility of non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization and the existence of vector-like particles whose quantum numbers are the same as those of the Standard Model (SM) fermions and their Hermitian conjugates and the SM adjoint particles. We first give all the independent sets (Yi) of particles that can be employed to achieve SU(3)_C and SU(2)_L string scale gauge coupling unification and calculate their masses. Second, for a non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization, we obtain string scale SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge coupling unification by choosing suitable U(1)_Y normalizations for each of the Yi sets. Alternatively, for the canonical U(1)_Y normalization, we achieve string scale gauge coupling unification by considering suitable combinations of the Yi sets or by introducing additional independent sets (Zi), that do not affect the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L unification at tree level, and then choosing suitable combinations, one from the Yi sets and one from the Zi sets. We also briefly discuss string scale gauge coupling unification in models with higher Kac-Moody levels for SU(2)_L or SU(3)_C.

Majorana neutrinos and lepton-number-violating signals in top-quark and W-boson rare decays

We discuss rare lepton-number-violating top-quark and W-boson four-body decays to final states containing a same-charge lepton pair, of the same or of different flavors: t -> b W- li^+ lj^+ and W+ -> J J' li^+ lj^+, where i \ne j or i=j and J J' stands for two light jets originating from a (u-bar d) or a (c-bar s) pair. These ΔL=2 decays are forbidden in the Standard Model and may be mediated by exchanges of Majorana neutrinos. We adopt a model independent approach for the Majorana neutrinos mixing pattern and calculate the branching ratios (BR) for these decays. We find, for example, that for O(1) mixings between heavy and light Majorana neutrinos (not likely but not ruled out) and if at least one of the heavy Majorana neutrinos has a mass of ~100 GeV, then the BR's for these decays are: BR(t -> b li^+ lj^+ W-) ~ 10^{-4} and BR(W+ -> li^+ lj^+ J J') ~ 10^{-7} if m_N ~ 100 GeV and BR(t -> b li^+ lj^+ J J') ~ BR(W+ -> li^+ lj^+ J J') ~ 0.01 if m_N < 50 GeV. Taking into account the present limits on the neutrino mixing parameters, we obtain more realistic values for these BR's: BR(t -> b li^+ lj^+ W-) ~ 10^{-6} and BR(W+ -> li^+ lj^+ J J') ~ 10^{-10} for m_N ~ 100 GeV and BR(t -> b li^+ lj^+ J J') ~ BR(W+ -> li^+ lj^+ J J') ~ 10^{-6} for m_N < 50 GeV.

Iterative Soft Input Soft Output Decoding of Reed-Solomon Codes by Adapting the Parity Check Matrix

An iterative algorithm is presented for soft-input-soft-output (SISO) decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. The proposed iterative algorithm uses the sum product algorithm (SPA) in conjunction with a binary parity check matrix of the RS code. The novelty is in reducing a submatrix of the binary parity check matrix that corresponds to less reliable bits to a sparse nature before the SPA is applied at each iteration. The proposed algorithm can be geometrically interpreted as a two-stage gradient descent with an adaptive potential function. This adaptive procedure is crucial to the convergence behavior of the gradient descent algorithm and, therefore, significantly improves the performance. Simulation results show that the proposed decoding algorithm and its variations provide significant gain over hard decision decoding (HDD) and compare favorably with other popular soft decision decoding methods.

Multilevel Coding for Channels with Non-uniform Inputs and Rateless Transmission over the BSC

We consider coding schemes for channels with non-uniform inputs (NUI), where standard linear block codes can not be applied directly. We show that multilevel coding (MLC) with a set of linear codes and a deterministic mapper can achieve the information rate of the channel with NUI. The mapper, however, does not have to be one-to-one. As an application of the proposed MLC scheme, we present a rateless transmission scheme over the binary symmetric channel (BSC).

Associated Production of a Top Quark and a Charged Higgs Boson

We compute the inclusive and differential cross sections for the associated production of a top quark along with a charged Higgs boson at hadron colliders to next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and in supersymmetric QCD. For small Higgs boson masses we include top quark pair production diagrams with subsequent top quark decay into a bottom quark and a charged Higgs boson. We compare the NLO differential cross sections obtained in the bottom parton picture with those for the gluon-initiated production process and find good agreement. The effects of supersymmetric loop contributions are explored. Only the corrections to the Yukawa coupling are sizable in the potential discovery region at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). All expressions and numerical results are fully differential, permitting selections on the momenta of both the top quark and the charged Higgs boson.

Performance Analysis of Algebraic Soft Decoding of Reed-Solomon Codes over Binary Symmetric and Erasure Channels

In this paper, we characterize the decoding region of algebraic soft decoding (ASD) of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes over erasure channels and binary symmetric channel (BSC). Optimal multiplicity assignment strategies (MAS) are investigated and tight bounds are derived to show the ASD can significantly outperform conventional Berlekamp Massey (BM) decoding over these channels for a wide code rate range. The analysis technique can also be extended to other channel models, e.g., RS coded modulation over erasure channels.

Non-Canonical Gauge Coupling Unification in High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

The string landscape suggests that the supersymmetry breaking scale can be high, and then the simplest low energy effective theory is the Standard Model (SM). Considering grand unification scale supersymmetry breaking, we show that gauge coupling unification can be achieved at about 10^{16-17} GeV in the SM with suitable normalizations of the U(1)_Y, and we predict that the Higgs mass range is 127 GeV to 165 GeV, with the precise value strongly correlated with the top quark mass m_t and SU(3)_C gauge coupling. For example, if m_t=178\pm1 GeV, the Higgs boson mass is predicted to be between 141 GeV and 154 GeV. We also point out that gauge coupling unification in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) does not imply the canonical U(1)_Y normalization. In addition, we present 7-dimensional orbifold grand unified theories (GUTs) in which such normalizations for the U(1)_Y and charge quantization can be realized. The supersymmetry can be broken at the grand unification scale by the Scherk--Schwarz mechanism. We briefly comment on a non-canonical U(1)_Y normalization due to the brane localized gauge kinetic terms in orbifold GUTs.

Axion Models with High-Scale Supersymmetry Breaking

Inspired by the possibility of high-scale supersymmetry breaking in the string landscape where the cosmological constant problem and the gauge hierarchy problem can be solved while the strong CP problem is still a challenge for naturalness, we propose a supersymmetric KSVZ axion model with an approximate universal intermediate-scale ($\sim 10^{11}$ GeV) supersymmetry breaking. To protect the global Peccei--Quinn (PQ) symmetry against quantum gravitational violation, we consider the gauged discrete $Z_N$ PQ symmetry. In our model the axion can be a cold dark matter candidate, and the intermediate supersymmetry breaking scale is directly related to the PQ symmetry breaking scale. Gauge coupling unification can be achieved at about $2.7\times 10^{16}$ GeV. The Higgs mass range is 130 GeV to 160 GeV. We briefly discuss other axion models with high-scale supersymmetry breaking where the stabilization of the axion solution is similar.

Supersymmetric SO(10) Models Inspired by Deconstruction

We consider 4-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric SO(10) models inspired by deconstruction of 5-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric orbifold SO(10) models and high dimensional non-supersymmetric SO(10) models with Wilson line gauge symmetry breaking. We discuss the $SO(10) \times SO(10)$ models with bi-fundamental link fields where the gauge symmetry can be broken down to the Pati-Salam, $SU(5) \times U(1)$, flipped $SU(5) \times U(1)'$ or the standard model like gauge symmetry. We also propose an $SO(10) \times SO(6) \times SO(4)$ model with bi-fundamental link fields where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the Pati-Salam gauge symmetry, and an $SO(10) \times SO(10)$ model with bi-spinor link fields where the gauge symmetry is broken down to the flipped $SU(5) \times U(1)'$ gauge symmetry. In these two models, the Pati-Salam and flipped $SU(5) \times U(1)'$ gauge symmetry can be further broken down to the standard model gauge symmetry, the doublet-triplet splittings can be obtained by the missing partner mechanism, and the proton decay problem can be solved. We also study the gauge coupling unification. We briefly comment on the interesting variation models with gauge groups $SO(10) \times SO(6)$ and $SO(10) \times flipped SU(5) \times U(1)'$ in which the proton decay problem can be solved.

B_s-anti-B_s Mixing in Z' Models with Flavor-Changing Neutral Currents

In models with an extra U(1)' gauge boson family non-universal couplings to the weak eigenstates of the standard model fermions generally induce flavor-changing neutral currents. This phenomenon leads to interesting results in various B meson decays, for which recent data indicate hints of new physics involving significant contributions from b -> s transitions. We analyze the B_s system, emphasizing the effects of a Z' on the mass difference and CP asymmetries.
