A close look at antiferromagnetism in multidimensional phase diagram of electron-doped copper oxide

Emergency of superconductivity at the instabilities of antiferromagnetism (AFM), spin/charge density waves has been widely recognized in unconventional superconductors. In copper-oxide superconductors, spin fluctuations play a predominant role in electron pairing with electron dopants yet composite orders veil the nature of superconductivity for hole-doped family. However, in electron-doped ones the ending point of AFM is still in controversy for different probes or its sensitivity to oxygen content. Here, by carefully tuning the oxygen content, a systematic study of Hall signal and magnetoresistivity up to 58 Tesla on optimally doped La2-xCexCuO4+-δ (x = 0.10) thin films identifies two characteristic temperatures at 62.5+-7.5 K and 25+-5 K. The former is quite robust whereas the latter becomes flexible with increasing magnetic field, thereby linked to two- and three-dimensional AFM, evident from the multidimensional phase diagram as a function of oxygen as well as Ce dopants. Consequently, the observation of extended AFM phase in contrast to μSR probe corroborates an elevated critical doping in field, providing an unambiguous picture to understand the interactions between AFM and superconductivity.

Evolution of electronic states in n-type copper oxide superconductor via electric double layer gating

Since the discovery of n-type copper oxide superconductors, the evolution of electron- and hole-bands and its relation to the superconductivity have been seen as a key factor in unveiling the mechanism of high-Tc superconductors. So far, the occurrence of electrons and holes in n-type copper oxides has been achieved by chemical doping, pressure, and/or deoxygenation. However, the observed electronic properties are blurred by the concomitant effects such as change of lattice structure, disorder, etc. Here, we report on successful tuning the electronic band structure of n-type Pr2-xCexCuO4 (x = 0.15) ultrathin films, via the electric double layer transistor technique. Abnormal transport properties, such as multiple sign reversals of Hall resistivity in normal and mixed states, have been revealed within an electrostatic field in range of -2 V to +2 V, as well as varying the temperature and magnetic field. In the mixed state, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity invokes the contribution of both electron and hole-bands as well as the energy dependent density of states near the Fermi level. The two-band model can also describe the normal state transport properties well, whereas the carrier concentrations of electrons and holes are always enhanced or depressed simultaneously in electric fields. This is in contrast to the scenario of Fermi surface reconstruction by antiferromagnetism, where an anti-correlation between electrons and holes is commonly expected. Our findings paint the picture where Coulomb repulsion plays an important role in the evolution of the electronic states in n-type cuprate superconductors.

(Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFe0.98Se superconductor: Ion-exchange synthesis of large single crystal and highly two-dimensional electron properties

A large and high-quality single crystal (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFe0.98Se, the optimal superconductor of newly reported (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe system, has been successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal ion-exchange technique. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 42 K is determined by magnetic susceptibility and electric resistivity measurements, and the zero-temperature upper critical magnetic fields are evaluated as 79 and 313 Tesla for the field along the c-axis and the ab-plane, respectively. The ratio of out-of-plane to in-plane electric resistivity,\r{ho}c/\r{ho}ab, is found to increases with decreasing temperature and to reach a high value of 2500 at 50 K, with an evident kink occurring at a characteristic temperature T*=120 K. The negative in-plane Hall coefficient indicates that electron carriers dominate in the charge transport, and the hole contribution is significantly reduced as the temperature is lowered to approach T*. From T* down to Tc, we observe the linear temperature dependences of the in-plane electric resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility for the FeSe layers. Our findings thus reveal that the normal state of (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFe0.98Se becomes highly two-dimensional and anomalous prior to the superconducting transition, providing a new insight into the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity.

Triplet pairing driven by Hund's coupling in doped monolayer MoS$_2$

We investigate superconducting pairing driven by electron-electron interactions in a theoretical model for monolayer MoS$_2$ with the temperature-flow functional renormalization group(fRG). At low doping, the dominant instability is toward odd-parity pairing with $f$-wave Mo-nearest-neighbor structure. We compute the fRG phase diagram versus electron doping below the van Hove filling of the conduction band. In the superconducting regime, the critical temperature grows with doping, comparable to the experiments. Near van Hove filling the system favors a ferromagnetic state. We demonstrate that the triplet pairing is driven by ferromagnetic fluctuations and that the multiorbital nature of the conduction band as well as the Hund's coupling appear crucial in making the physics of MoS$_2$ different from e.g. doped graphene.

Phase diagram of (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe: a bridge between iron selenide and arsenide superconductors

Previous experimental results have shown important differences between iron selenide and arsenide superconductors, which seem to suggest that the high temperature superconductivity in these two subgroups of iron-based family may arise from different electronic ground states. Here, we report the complete phase diagram of a newly synthesized superconducting (SC) system (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe with a similar structure to FeAs-based superconductors. In the non-SC samples, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-density-wave (SDW) transition occurs at ~127 K. This is the first example to demonstrate such an SDW phase in FeSe-based superconductor system. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that a well-known sqrr(5) x sqrr(5) iron vacancy ordered state, resulting in an AFM order at ~ 500K in AyFe2-xSe2 (A = metal ions) superconductor system, is absent in both non-SC and SC samples, but a unique superstructure with a modulation wave vector q=1/2(1, 1, 0), identical to that seen in SC phase of KyFe2-xSe2, is dominant in the optimal SC sample (with an SC transition temperature Tc = 40 K). Hence, we conclude that the high-Tc superconductivity in (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe stems from the similarly weak AFM fluctuations as FeAs-based superconductors, suggesting a universal physical picture for both iron selenide and arsenide superconductors.

Half Metallic Bilayer Graphene

Charge neutral bilayer graphene has a gapped ground state as transport experiments demonstrate. One of the plausible such ground states is layered antiferromagnetic spin density wave (LAF) state, where the spins in top and bottom layers have same magnitude with opposite directions. We propose that lightly charged bilayer graphene in an electric field perpendicular to the graphene plane may be a half metal as a consequence of the inversion and particle-hole symmetry broken in the LAF state. We show this explicitly by using a mean field theory on a 2-layer Hubbard model for the bilayer graphene.

Stacking order, interaction and weak surface magnetism in layered graphene sheets

Recent transport experiments have demonstrated that the rhombohedral stacking trilayer graphene is an insulator with an intrinsic gap of 6meV and the Bernal stacking trilayer one is a metal. We propose a Hubbard model with a moderate $U$ for layered graphene sheets, and show that the model well explains the experiments of the stacking dependent energy gap. The on-site Coulomb repulsion drives the metallic phase of the non-interacting system to a weak surface antiferromagnetic insulator for the rhombohedral stacking layers, but does not alter the metallic phase for the Bernal stacking layers.

Superconductivity suppression of Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 single crystals by substitution of transition-metal (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn)

We investigated the doping effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities on the single-crystalline p-type Ba0.5K0.5Fe2-2xM2xAs2 (M = Mn, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) superconductors. The superconductivity indicates robustly against impurity of Ru, while weakly against the impurities of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. However, the present Tc suppression rate of both magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities remains much lower than what was expected for the s\pm-wave model. The temperature dependence of resistivity data is observed an obvious low-T upturn for the crystals doped with high-level impurity, which is due to the occurrence of localization. Thus, the relatively weak Tc suppression effect from Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are considered as a result of localization rather than pair-breaking effect in s\pm-wave model.

Giant mesoscopic spin Hall effect on surface of topological insulator

We study mesoscopic spin Hall effect on the surface of topological insulator with a step-function potential. The giant spin polarization induced by a transverse electric current is derived analytically by using McMillan method in the ballistic transport limit, which oscillates across the potential boundary with no confinement from the potential barrier due to the Klein paradox, and should be observable in spin resolved scanning tunneling microscope.
