Anomalies of upper critical field in the spinel superconductor LiTi$_2$O$_{4-δ}$

High-field electrical transport and point-contact tunneling spectroscopy were used to investigate superconducting properties of the unique spinel oxide, LiTi$_2$O$_{4-δ}$ films with various oxygen content. We find that the upper critical field $B_\mathrm{c2}$ gradually increases as more oxygen impurities are brought into the samples by carefully tuning the deposition atmosphere. It is striking that although the superconducting transition temperature and energy gap are almost unchanged, an astonishing isotropic $B_\mathrm{c2}$ up to $\sim$ 26 Tesla is observed in oxygen-rich sample, which is doubled compared to the anoxic sample and breaks the Pauli limit. Such anomalies of $B_\mathrm{c2}$ were rarely reported in other three dimensional superconductors. Combined with all the anomalies, three dimensional spin-orbit interaction induced by tiny oxygen impurities is naturally proposed to account for the remarkable enhancement of $B_\mathrm{c2}$ in oxygen-rich LiTi$_2$O$_{4-δ}$ films. Such mechanism could be general and therefore provides ideas for optimizing practical superconductors with higher $B_\mathrm{c2}$.

Item Recommendation with Variational Autoencoders and Heterogenous Priors

In recent years, Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) have been shown to be highly effective in both standard collaborative filtering applications and extensions such as incorporation of implicit feedback. We extend VAEs to collaborative filtering with side information, for instance when ratings are combined with explicit text feedback from the user. Instead of using a user-agnostic standard Gaussian prior, we incorporate user-dependent priors in the latent VAE space to encode users' preferences as functions of the review text. Taking into account both the rating and the text information to represent users in this multimodal latent space is promising to improve recommendation quality. Our proposed model is shown to outperform the existing VAE models for collaborative filtering (up to 29.41% relative improvement in ranking metric) along with other baselines that incorporate both user ratings and text for item recommendation.

Tunable superconductivity in parent cuprate Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ thin films

In this article, we studied the role of oxygen in Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ thin films fabricated by polymer assisted deposition method. The magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity of Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ samples were systematically investigated. It is found that with decreasing the oxygen content, the low-temperature Hall coefficient ($R_H$) and magnetoresistance change from negative to positive, similar to those with the increase of Ce-doped concentration in R$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (R= La, Nd, Pr, Sm, Eu). In addition, $T_c$ versus $R_H$ for both Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ and Pr$_{2}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ samples can coincide with each other. We conclude that the doped electrons induced by the oxygen removal are responsible for the superconductivity of $T^\prime$-phase parent compounds.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: Model Predictive Control With Conditional Integral Control Using A General Purpose Optimal Control Problem Solver - RIOTS

This paper presents a multi-variable Model Predictive Control (MPC) based controller for the one-staged refrigeration cycle model described in the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge. This model represents a two-input, two-output system with strong nonlinearities and high coupling between its variables. A general purpose optimal control problem (OCP) solver Matlab toolbox called RIOTS is used as the OCP solver for the proposed MPC scheme which allows for straightforward implementation of the method and for solving a wide range of constrained linear and nonlinear optimal control problems. A conditional integral (CI) compensator is embedded in the controller to compensate for the small steady state errors. This method shows significant improvements in performance compared to both discrete decentralized control (C1) and multi-variable PID controller (C2) originally given in PID2018 Benchmark Challenge as a baseline. Our solution is introduced in detail in this paper and our final results using the overall relative index, $J$, are 0.2 over C1 and 0.3 over C2, respectively. In other words, we achieved 80% improvement over C1 and 70% improvement over C2. We expect to achieve further improvements when some optimized searching efforts are used for MPC and CI parameter tuning.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge:Multi-Objective Stochastic Optimization Algorithm

This paper presents a multi-objective stochastic optimization method for tuning of the controller parameters of Refrigeration Systems based on Vapour Compression. Stochastic Multi Parameter Divergence Optimization (SMDO) algorithm is modified for minimization of the Multi Objective function for optimization process. System control performance is improved by tuning of the PI controller parameters according to discrete time model of the refrigeration system with multi objective function by adding conditional integral structure that is preferred to reduce the steady state error of the system. Simulations are compared with existing results via many graphical and numerical solutions.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: Model-based Feedforward Compensator with A Conditional Integrator

Since proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers absolutely dominate the control engineering, numbers of different control structures and theories have been developed to enhance the efficiency of PID controllers. Thus, it is essential and inspiring to operate different PID control strategies to the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge. In this paper, a novel control strategy is designed for this refrigeration system, where a feedforward compensator and a conditional integrator are utilized to compensate the disturbances and remove the steady-state error in the benchmark problem, respectively. The simulation results given in the benchmark problem show the straightforward effectiveness of the proposed control structure compared with the existing control methods.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: learning feedforward control

The design and application of learning feedforward controllers (LFFC) for the one-staged refrigeration cycle model described in the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge is presented, and its effectiveness is evaluated. The control system consists of two components: 1) a preset PID component and 2) a learning feedforward component which is a function approximator that is adapted on the basis of the feedback signal. A B-spline network based LFFC and a low-pass filter based LFFC are designed to track the desired outlet temperature of evaporator secondary flux and the superheating degree of refrigerant at evaporator outlet. Encouraging simulation results are included. Qualitative and quantitative comparison results evaluations show that, with little effort, a high-performance control system can be obtained with this approach. Our initial simple attempt of low-pass filter based LFFC and B-spline network based LFFC give J=0.4902 and J=0.6536 relative to the decentralized PID controller, respectively. Besides, the initial attempt of a combination controller of our optimized PI controller and low-pass filter LFFC gives J=0.6947 relative to the multi-variable PID controller.

Electronic phase separation in iron selenide (Li, Fe)OHFeSe superconductor system

The phenomenon of phase separation into antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) or normal-state regions has great implication for the origin of high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity. However, the occurrence of an intrinsic antiferromagnetism above the Tc of (Li, Fe)OHFeSe superconductor is questioned. Here we report a systematic study on a series of (Li, Fe)OHFeSe single crystal samples with Tc up to ~41 K. We observe an evident drop in the static magnetization at Tafm ~125 K, in some of the SC (Tc < ~38 K, cell parameter c < ~9.27 Å) and non-SC samples. We verify that this AFM signal is intrinsic to (Li, Fe)OHFeSe. Thus, our observations indicate mesoscopic-to-macroscopic coexistence of an AFM state with the normal (below Tafm) or SC (below Tc) state in (Li, Fe)OHFeSe. We explain such coexistence by electronic phase separation, similar to that in high-Tc cuprates and iron arsenides. However, such an AFM signal can be absent in some other samples of (Li, Fe)OHFeSe, particularly it is never observed in the SC samples of Tc > ~38 K, owing to a spatial scale of the phase separation too small for the macroscopic magnetic probe. For this case, we propose a microscopic electronic phase separation. It is suggested that the microscopic static phase separation reaches vanishing point in high-Tc (Li, Fe)OHFeSe, by the occurrence of two-dimensional AFM spin fluctuations below nearly the same temperature as Tafm reported previously for a (Li, Fe)OHFeSe (Tc ~42 K) single crystal. A complete phase diagram is thus established. Our study provides key information of the underlying physics for high-Tc superconductivity.

Nematic superconducting state in iron pnictide superconductors

Nematic order often breaks the tetragonal symmetry of iron-based superconductors. It arises from regular structural transition or electronic instability in the normal phase. Here, we report the observation of a nematic superconducting state, by measuring the angular dependence of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistivity of Ba0.5K0.5Fe2As2 single crystals. We find large twofold oscillations in the vicinity of the superconducting transition, when the direction of applied magnetic field is rotated within the basal plane. To avoid the influences from sample geometry or current flow direction, the sample was designed as Corbino-shape for in-plane and mesa-shape for out-of-plane measurements. Theoretical analysis shows that the nematic superconductivity arises from the weak mixture of the quasi-degenerate s-wave and d-wave components of the superconducting condensate, most probably induced by a weak anisotropy of stresses inherent to single crystals.

The effects of oxygen in spinel oxide Li1+xTi2-xO4-delta thin films

The evolution from superconducting LiTi2O4-delta to insulating Li4Ti5O12 thin films has been studied by precisely adjusting the oxygen pressure during the sample fabrication process. In the superconducting LiTi2O4-delta films, with the increase of oxygen pressure, the oxygen vacancies are filled, and the c-axis lattice constant decreases gradually. With the increase of the oxygen pressure to a certain critical value, the c-axis lattice constant becomes stable, which implies that the Li4Ti5O12 phase comes into being. The process of oxygen filling is manifested by the angular bright-field images of the scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques. The temperature of magnetoresistance changed from positive and negative shows a non-monotonous behavior with the increase of oxygen pressure. The theoretical explanation of the oxygen effects on the structure and superconductivity of LiTi2O4-delta has also been discussed in this work.

Superconducting (Li, Fe)OHFeSe film of high quality and high critical parameters

The superconducting film of (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe is reported for the first time. The thin film exhibits a small in-plane crystal mosaic of 0.22 deg, in terms of the FWHM (full-width-at-half-maximum) of x-ray rocking curve, and an excellent out-of-plane orientation by x-ray phi-scan. Its bulk superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 42.4 K is characterized by both zero electrical resistance and diamagnetization measurements. The upper critical field (Hc2) is estimated to be 79.5 T and 443 T, respectively, for the magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the ab plane. Moreover, a large critical current density (Jc) of a value over 0.5 MA/cm2 is achieved at ~20 K. Such a (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe film is therefore not only important to the fundamental research for understanding the high-Tc mechanism, but also promising in the field of high-Tc superconductivity application, especially in high-performance electronic devices and large scientific facilities such as superconducting accelerator.

Promoting superconductivity in FeSe films via fine manipulation of crystal lattice

Stabilized FeSe thin films in ambient pressure with tunable superconductivity would be a promising candidate for superconducting electronic devices yet its superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is below 10 K in bulk materials. By carefully controlling the depositions on twelve kinds of substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique, high quality single crystalline FeSe samples were fabricated with full width of half maximum 0.515? in the rocking curve and clear four-fold symmetry in phi-scan from x-ray diractions. The films have a maximum Tc 15 K on the CaF2 substrate and do not show obvious decay in the air for more than half a year. Slightly tuning the stoichiometry of the FeSe targets, the Tc becomes adjustable from 15 to < 2 K with quite narrow transition widths less than 2 K, and shows a positive relation with the out-of-plane (c-axis) lattice parameter of the films. However, there is no clear relation between the Tc and the surface atomic distance of the substrates. By reducing the thickness of the films, the Tc decreases and fades away in samples of less than 10 nm, suggesting that the strain effect is not responsible for the enhancement of Tc in our experiments.

Manipulating composition gradient in cuprate superconducting thin films

The techniques of growing films with different parameters in single process make it possible to build up a sample library promptly. In this work, with a precisely controlled moving mask, we synthetized superconducting La2-xCexCuO4+/-δ combinatorial films on one SrTiO3 substrate with the doping levels from x = 0.1 to 0.19. The monotonicity in doping along the designed direction is verified by micro-region x-ray diffraction and electric transport measurements. More importantly, by means of numerical simulation, the real change of doping levels is in accordance with a linear gradient variation of doping levels in the La2-xCexCuO4+/-δ combinatorial films. Our results indicate that it is promising to accurately investigate materials with critical composition by combinatorial film technique.

Doping Mn into (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe superconducting crystals via ion-exchange and ion-release/introduction syntheses

We report the success in introducing Mn into (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe superconducting crystals by applying two different hydrothermal routes, ion exchange (1-Step) and ion release/introduction (2-Step). The micro-region x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analyses indicate that the Mn has been doped into the lattice, and its content in the 1-Step fabricated sample is higher than that in the 2-Step one. Magnetic susceptibility and electric transport properties reveal that Mn doping influences little on the superconducting transition, regardless of 1-Step or 2-Step routes. By contrast, the characteristic temperature, T*, where the negative Hall coefficient reaches its minimum, is significantly reduced by Mn doping. This implies that the reduction of the hole carriers contribution is obviously modified, and hence the hole band might have no direct relationship with the superconductivity in (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe superconductors. Our present hydrothermal methods of ion exchange and ion release/introduction provide an efficient way for elements substitution/doping into (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe superconductors, which will promote the in-depth investigations on the role of multiple electron and hole bands and their interplay with the high-temperature superconductivity in the FeSe-based superconductors.

Normal State Gap in Parent Cuprate Pr2CuO4+/-δ

We present a tunneling study on single crystalline parent cuprate thin films, i.e. a series of Pr2CuO4+/-δ(PCO) with tunable superconducting transition temperature. The zero-bias anomaly of differential conductance, well reported in the normal state of R2-xCexCuO4 (R = Pr, Nd, La) and named as normal state gap (NSG), is observed in the Ce-free samples. This NSG behaves quite robust against the magnetic field up to 16 T, but fades away with increasing the temperature. Most importantly, we find that the magnitude of the NSG becomes larger with increasing point-contact junction resistance on the superconducting films, which is further enhanced in the non-superconducting samples of more oxygen disorders. The origination of NSG can be understood in the framework of Altshuler-Aronov-Lee (AAL) theory, where the disorder-induced electron-electron interactions suppress the density of states and thereby result in a soft Coulomb gap.

Anisotropic electron-phonon coupling in the spinel oxide superconductor

Among hundreds of spinel oxides, LiTi2O4 (LTO) is the only one that exhibits superconductivity (Tc ~13 K). Although the general electron-phonon coupling is still the main mechanism for electron pairing in LTO, unconventional behaviors such as the anomalous magnetoresistance, anisotropic orbital/spin susceptibilities, etc. reveal that both the spin and the orbital interactions should also be considered for understanding the superconductivity. Here, we investigate tunneling spectra of [111]-, [110]- and [001]-oriented high quality LTO thin films. Several bosonic modes in tunneling spectra are observed in the [111]- and [110]-oriented films but not in [001]-oriented ones, and these modes still exist at T = 2Tc and beyond the upper critical field, which are confirmed as stemming from electron-phonon interaction by DFT calculations. These modes only appear in special surface orientations, indicating that the electron-phonon coupling in LTO system is highly anisotropic and may be enhanced by orbital-related state. The anisotropic electron-phonon coupling should be taken seriously in understanding the nature of LTO superconductivity.

Crystallographic dependent transport properties and oxygen issue in superconducting LiTi2O4 thin films

A systematic study is performed on the spinel oxide, i.e. LiTi2O4 thin films oriented along [111]-, [110]-, and [001]-directions, to reveal the crystallographic dependence of transport properties. With decreasing temperature, the LiTi2O4 displays roughly identical onset temperatures of twofold symmetry of in-plane angular dependent magnetoresistivity (AMR) (at ~ 100 K), crossover from negative- to positive- magnetoresistance (at ~ 50 K), and coherence length in the superconducting state. While, the twofold symmetry in AMR itself suggests anisotropic electron scattering. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) seems insensitive to the lattice parameter. Moreover, the spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) discloses that oxygen vacancies exist in the LiTi2O4 films. These oxygen vacancies cause the change of lattice but show little influence on superconductivity, differing from high-Tc cuprates where subtle variation of oxygen way lead to a significant change in superconductivity.

Transport anomalies and quantum criticality in electron-doped cuprate superconductors

Superconductivity research is like running a marathon. Three decades after the discovery of high-Tc cuprates, there have been mass data generated from transport measurements, which bring fruitful information. In this review, we give a brief summary of the intriguing phenomena reported in electron-doped cuprates from the aspect of electrical transport as well as the complementary thermal transport. We attempt to sort out common features of the electron-doped family, e.g. the strange metal, negative magnetoresistance, multiple sign reversals of Hall in mixed state, abnormal Nernst signal, complex quantum criticality. Most of them have been challenging the existing theories, nevertheless, a unified diagram certainly helps to approach the nature of electron-doped cuprates.
