Exact correlators in the Gaussian Hermitian matrix model

We present the $W_{1+\infty}$ constraints for the Gaussian Hermitian matrix model, where the constructed constraint operators yield the $W_{1+\infty}$ $n$-algebra. For the Virasoro constraints, we note that the constraint operators give the null 3-algebra. With the help of our Virasoro constraints, we derive a new effective formula for correlators in the Gaussian Hermitian matrix model.

SDM-NET: Deep Generative Network for Structured Deformable Mesh

We introduce SDM-NET, a deep generative neural network which produces structured deformable meshes. Specifically, the network is trained to generate a spatial arrangement of closed, deformable mesh parts, which respect the global part structure of a shape collection, e.g., chairs, airplanes, etc. Our key observation is that while the overall structure of a 3D shape can be complex, the shape can usually be decomposed into a set of parts, each homeomorphic to a box, and the finer-scale geometry of the part can be recovered by deforming the box. The architecture of SDM-NET is that of a two-level variational autoencoder (VAE). At the part level, a PartVAE learns a deformable model of part geometries. At the structural level, we train a Structured Parts VAE (SP-VAE), which jointly learns the part structure of a shape collection and the part geometries, ensuring a coherence between global shape structure and surface details. Through extensive experiments and comparisons with the state-of-the-art deep generative models of shapes, we demonstrate the superiority of SDM-NET in generating meshes with visual quality, flexible topology, and meaningful structures, which benefit shape interpolation and other subsequently modeling tasks.

Dynamic Curriculum Learning for Imbalanced Data Classification

Human attribute analysis is a challenging task in the field of computer vision, since the data is largely imbalance-distributed. Common techniques such as re-sampling and cost-sensitive learning require prior-knowledge to train the system. To address this problem, we propose a unified framework called Dynamic Curriculum Learning (DCL) to online adaptively adjust the sampling strategy and loss learning in single batch, which resulting in better generalization and discrimination. Inspired by the curriculum learning, DCL consists of two level curriculum schedulers: (1) sampling scheduler not only manages the data distribution from imbalanced to balanced but also from easy to hard; (2) loss scheduler controls the learning importance between classification and metric learning loss. Learning from these two schedulers, we demonstrate our DCL framework with the new state-of-the-art performance on the widely used face attribute dataset CelebA and pedestrian attribute dataset RAP.

3-D Positioning and Environment Mapping for mmWave Communication Systems

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) cloud radio access networks (CRANs) provide new opportunities for accurate cooperative localization, in which large bandwidths, large antenna arrays, and increased densities of base stations allow for their unparalleled delay and angular resolution. Combining localization into communications and designing simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms are challenging problems. This study considers the joint position and velocity estimation and environment mapping problem in a three-dimensional mmWave CRAN architecture. We first embed cooperative localization into communications and establish the joint estimation and mapping model with hybrid delay and angle measurements. Then, we propose a closed-form weighted least square (WLS) solution for the joint estimation and mapping problems. The proposed WLS estimator is proven asymptotically unbiased and confirmed by simulations as effective in achieving the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and the desired decimeter-level accuracy. Furthermore, we propose a WLS-Net-based SLAM algorithm by embedding neural networks into the proposed WLS estimators to replace the linear approximations. The solution possesses both powerful learning ability of the neural network and robustness of the proposed geometric model, and the ensemble learning is applied to further improve positioning accuracy. A public ray-tracing dataset is used in the simulations to test the performance of the WLS-Net-based SLAM algorithm, which is proven fast and effective in attaining the centimeter-level accuracy.

Mesh Variational Autoencoders with Edge Contraction Pooling

3D shape analysis is an important research topic in computer vision and graphics. While existing methods have generalized image-based deep learning to meshes using graph-based convolutions, the lack of an effective pooling operation restricts the learning capability of their networks. In this paper, we propose a novel pooling operation for mesh datasets with the same connectivity but different geometry, by building a mesh hierarchy using mesh simplification. For this purpose, we develop a modified mesh simplification method to avoid generating highly irregularly sized triangles. Our pooling operation effectively encodes the correspondence between coarser and finer meshes in the hierarchy. We then present a variational auto-encoder structure with the edge contraction pooling and graph-based convolutions, to explore probability latent spaces of 3D surfaces. Our network requires far fewer parameters than the original mesh VAE and thus can handle denser models thanks to our new pooling operation and convolutional kernels. Our evaluation also shows that our method has better generalization ability and is more reliable in various applications, including shape generation, shape interpolation and shape embedding.

Diffractive imaging of dissociation and ground state dynamics in a complex molecule

We have investigated the structural dynamics in photoexcited 1,2-diiodotetrafluoroethane molecules (C2F4I2) in the gas phase experimentally using ultrafast electron diffraction and theoretically using FOMO-CASCI excited state dynamics simulations. The molecules are excited by an ultra-violet femtosecond laser pulse to a state characterized by a transition from the iodine 5p orbital to a mixed 5p|| hole and CF2 antibonding orbital, which results in the cleavage of one of the carbon-iodine bonds. We have observed, with sub-Angstrom resolution, the motion of the nuclear wavepacket of the dissociating iodine atom followed by coherent vibrations in the electronic ground state of the C2F4I radical. The radical reaches a stable classical (non-bridged) structure in less than 200 fs.

Adversarial Attack Type I: Cheat Classifiers by Significant Changes

Despite the great success of deep neural networks, the adversarial attack can cheat some well-trained classifiers by small permutations. In this paper, we propose another type of adversarial attack that can cheat classifiers by significant changes. For example, we can significantly change a face but well-trained neural networks still recognize the adversarial and the original example as the same person. Statistically, the existing adversarial attack increases Type II error and the proposed one aims at Type I error, which are hence named as Type II and Type I adversarial attack, respectively. The two types of attack are equally important but are essentially different, which are intuitively explained and numerically evaluated. To implement the proposed attack, a supervised variation autoencoder is designed and then the classifier is attacked by updating the latent variables using gradient information. {Besides, with pre-trained generative models, Type I attack on latent spaces is investigated as well.} Experimental results show that our method is practical and effective to generate Type I adversarial examples on large-scale image datasets. Most of these generated examples can pass detectors designed for defending Type II attack and the strengthening strategy is only efficient with a specific type attack, both implying that the underlying reasons for Type I and Type II attack are different.

AirwayNet: A Voxel-Connectivity Aware Approach for Accurate Airway Segmentation Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Airway segmentation on CT scans is critical for pulmonary disease diagnosis and endobronchial navigation. Manual extraction of airway requires strenuous efforts due to the complicated structure and various appearance of airway. For automatic airway extraction, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) based methods have recently become the state-of-the-art approach. However, there still remains a challenge for CNNs to perceive the tree-like pattern and comprehend the connectivity of airway. To address this, we propose a voxel-connectivity aware approach named AirwayNet for accurate airway segmentation. By connectivity modeling, conventional binary segmentation task is transformed into 26 tasks of connectivity prediction. Thus, our AirwayNet learns both airway structure and relationship between neighboring voxels. To take advantage of context knowledge, lung distance map and voxel coordinates are fed into AirwayNet as additional semantic information. Compared to existing approaches, AirwayNet achieved superior performance, demonstrating the effectiveness of the network's awareness of voxel connectivity.

Electronic Transport Evidence for Topological Nodal-Line Semimetals of ZrGeSe single crystals

Although the band topology of ZrGeSe has been studied via magnetic torque technique, the electronic transport behaviors related to the relativistic Fermions in ZrGeSe are still unknown. Here, we first report systematic electronic transport properties of high-quality ZrGeSe single crystals under magnetic fields up to 14 T. Resistivity plateaus of temperature dependent resistivity curves both in the presence and absence of magnetic fields as well as large, non-saturating magnetoresistance in low-temperature region were observed. By analyzing the temperature- and angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and fitting it via the Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) formula with the Berry phase being taken into account, we proved that Dirac fermions dominate the electronic transport behaviors of ZrGeSe and the presence of non-trivial Berry phase. First principles calculations demonstrate that ZrGeSe possesses Dirac bands and normal bands near Fermi surface, resulting in the observed magnetotransport phenomena. These results demonstrate that ZrGeSe is a topological nodal-line semimetal, which provides a fundamentally important platform to study the quantum physics of topological semimetals.

Estimating brain age based on a healthy population with deep learning and structural MRI

Numerous studies have established that estimated brain age, as derived from statistical models trained on healthy populations, constitutes a valuable biomarker that is predictive of cognitive decline and various neurological diseases. In this work, we curate a large-scale heterogeneous dataset (N = 10,158, age range 18 - 97) of structural brain MRIs in a healthy population from multiple publicly-available sources, upon which we train a deep learning model for brain age estimation. The availability of the large-scale dataset enables a more uniform age distribution across adult life-span for effective age estimation with no bias toward certain age groups. We demonstrate that the age estimation accuracy, evaluated with mean absolute error (MAE) and correlation coefficient (r), outperforms previously reported methods in both a hold-out test set reflective of the custom population (MAE = 4.06 years, r = 0.970) and an independent life-span evaluation dataset (MAE = 4.21 years, r = 0.960) on which a previous study has evaluated. We further demonstrate the utility of the estimated age in life-span aging analysis of cognitive functions. Furthermore, we conduct extensive ablation tests and employ feature-attribution techniques to analyze which regions contribute the most predictive value, demonstrating the prominence of the frontal lobe as well as pattern shift across life-span. In summary, we achieve superior age estimation performance confirming the efficacy of deep learning and the added utility of training with data both in larger number and more uniformly distributed than in previous studies. We demonstrate the regional contribution to our brain age predictions through multiple routes and confirm the association of divergence between estimated and chronological brain age with neuropsychological measures.

Geodesics and periodic orbits in Kehagias-Sfetsos black holes in deformed Hourava-Lifshitz gravity

The motion of a massive test particle around a Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in deformed Hourava-Lifshitz gravity is studied. Employing the effective potential, the marginally bound orbits and the innermost stable circular orbits are analyzed. For the marginally bound orbits, their radius and angular momentum decrease with the parameter $ω$ of the gravity. For the innermost stable circular orbits, the energy and angular momentum also decrease with $ω$. Based on these results, we investigate the periodic orbits in the Kehagias-Sfetsos black holes. It is found that the apsidal angle parameter increases with the particle energy, while decreases with the angular momentum. Moreover, compared to the Schwarzschild black hole, the periodic orbits in Kehagias-Sfetsos black holes always have lower energy. These results provide us a possible way to distinguish the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in deformed Hourava-Lifshitz gravity from the Schwarzschild black hole.

A Review of Semi Supervised Learning Theories and Recent Advances

Semi-supervised learning, which has emerged from the beginning of this century, is a new type of learning method between traditional supervised learning and unsupervised learning. The main idea of semi-supervised learning is to introduce unlabeled samples into the model training process to avoid performance (or model) degeneration due to insufficiency of labeled samples. Semi-supervised learning has been applied successfully in many fields. This paper reviews the development process and main theories of semi-supervised learning, as well as its recent advances and importance in solving real-world problems demonstrated by typical application examples.

Experimental investigation of nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence

Nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) based on coherence complementarity relations is generally viewed as a stronger nonclassical correlation than Bell nonlocality. An arbitrary two-qubit state with NAQC must be an entangled state, which demonstrates that the criterion of NAQC can also be regarded as an entanglement witness. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the NAQC for Bell-diagonal states with high fidelity in an optics-based platform. We perform local measurements on a subsystem in three mutually unbiased bases and reconstruct the density matrices of the measured states by quantum state tomography process. By analyzing characteristic of the $l_1$ norm, relative entropy and skew information of coherence with parameters of quantum states, NAQC for the quantum states is accurately captured, and it shows that our experimental results are well compatible with the theoretical predictions. It is worth mentioning that quantum states with NAQC would have higher entanglement, and thus NAQC could be expected to be a kind of useful physical resource for quantum information processing.

Exploring the Structure of Misconceptions in the Force Concept Inventory with Modified Module Analysis

Module Analysis for Multiple-Choice Responses (MAMCR) was applied to a large sample of Force Concept Inventory (FCI) pretest and post-test responses ($N_{pre}=4509$ and $N_{post}=4716$) to replicate the results of the original MAMCR study and to understand the origins of the gender differences reported in a previous study of this data set. When the results of MAMCR could not be replicated, a modification of the method was introduced, Modified Module Analysis (MMA). MMA was productive in understanding the structure of the incorrect answers in the FCI, identifying 9 groups of incorrect answers on the pretest and 11 groups on the post-test. These groups, in most cases, could be mapped on to common misconceptions used by the authors of the FCI to create distactors for the instrument. Of these incorrect answer groups, 6 of the pretest groups and 8 of the post-test groups were the same for men and women. Two of the male-only pretest groups disappeared with instruction while the third male-only pretest group was identified for both men and women post-instruction. Three of the groups identified for both men and women on the post-test were not present for either on the pretest. The rest of the identified incorrect answer groups did not represent misconceptions, but were rather related to the the blocked structure of some FCI items where multiple items are related to a common stem. The groups identified had little relation to the gender unfair items previously identified for this data set, and therefore, differences in the structure of student misconceptions between men and women cannot explain the gender differences reported for the FCI.

Secure Beamforming Design in Relay-Assisted Internet of Things

A secure downlink transmission system which is exposed to multiple eavesdroppers and is appropriate for Internet of Things (IoT) applications is considered. A worst case scenario is assumed, in the sense that, in order to enhance their interception ability all eavesdroppers are located close to each other, near the controller and collude to form joint receive beamforming. For such a system, a novel cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) secure transmission scheme for which an IoT device with a stronger channel condition acts as an energy harvesting relay in order to assist a second IoT device operating under weaker channel conditions, is proposed and its performance is analyzed and evaluated. A secrecy sum rate (SSR) maximization problem is formulated and solved under three constraints: i) Transmit power; ii) Successive interference cancellation; iii) Quality of Service. By considering both passive and active eavesdroppers scenarios, two optimization schemes are proposed to improve the overall system SSR. On the one hand, for the passive eavesdropper scenario, an artificial noise-aided secure beamforming scheme is proposed. Since this optimization problem is nonconvex, instead of using traditional but highly complex, bruteforce two-dimensional search, it is conveniently transformed into a convex one by using an epigraph reformulation. On the other hand, for the active multi-antennas eavesdroppers' scenario, the orthogonal-projection-based beamforming scheme is considered, and by employing the successive convex approximation method, a suboptimal solution is proposed. Furthermore, since for single antenna transmission the orthogonal-projection-based scheme may not be applicable a simple power control scheme is proposed.

High Speed Continuous Variable Source-Independent Quantum Random Number Generation

As a fundamental phenomenon in nature, randomness has a wide range of applications in the fields of science and engineering. Among different types of random number generators (RNG), quantum random number generator (QRNG) is a kind of promising RNG as it can provide provable true random numbers based on the inherent randomness of fundamental quantum processes. Nevertheless, the randomness from a QRNG can be diminished (or even destroyed) if the devices (especially the entropy source devices) are not perfect or ill-characterized. To eliminate the practical security loopholes from the source, source-independent QRNGs, which allow the source to have arbitrary and unknown dimensions, have been introduced and become one of the most important semi-device-independent QRNGs. Herein a method that enables ultra-fast unpredictable quantum random number generation from quadrature fluctuations of quantum optical field without any assumptions on the input states is proposed. Particularly, to estimate a lower bound on the extractable randomness that is independent from side information held by an eavesdropper, a new security analysis framework is established based on the extremality of Gaussian states, which can be easily extended to design and analyze new semi-device-independent continuous variable QRNG protocols. Moreover, the practical imperfections of the QRNG including the effects of excess noise, finite sampling range, finite resolution and asymmetric conjugate quadratures are taken into account and quantitatively analyzed. Finally, the proposed method is experimentally demonstrated to obtain high secure random number generation rates of 15.07 Gbits/s in off-line configuration and can potentially achieve 6 Gbits/s by real-time post-processing.

Light-Induced Charge Density Wave in LaTe$_3$

When electrons in a solid are excited with light, they can alter the free energy landscape and access phases of matter that are beyond reach in thermal equilibrium. This accessibility becomes of vast importance in the presence of phase competition, when one state of matter is preferred over another by only a small energy scale that, in principle, is surmountable by light. Here, we study a layered compound, LaTe$_3$, where a small in-plane (a-c plane) lattice anisotropy results in a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) along the c-axis. Using ultrafast electron diffraction, we find that after photoexcitation, the CDW along the c-axis is weakened and subsequently, a different competing CDW along the a-axis emerges. The timescales characterizing the relaxation of this new CDW and the reestablishment of the original CDW are nearly identical, which points towards a strong competition between the two orders. The new density wave represents a transient non-equilibrium phase of matter with no equilibrium counterpart, and this study thus provides a framework for unleashing similar states of matter that are "trapped" under equilibrium conditions.

Robust Visual Tracking Revisited: From Correlation Filter to Template Matching

In this paper, we propose a novel matching based tracker by investigating the relationship between template matching and the recent popular correlation filter based trackers (CFTs). Compared to the correlation operation in CFTs, a sophisticated similarity metric termed "mutual buddies similarity" (MBS) is proposed to exploit the relationship of multiple reciprocal nearest neighbors for target matching. By doing so, our tracker obtains powerful discriminative ability on distinguishing target and background as demonstrated by both empirical and theoretical analyses. Besides, instead of utilizing single template with the improper updating scheme in CFTs, we design a novel online template updating strategy named "memory filtering" (MF), which aims to select a certain amount of representative and reliable tracking results in history to construct the current stable and expressive template set. This scheme is beneficial for the proposed tracker to comprehensively "understand" the target appearance variations, "recall" some stable results. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations on two benchmarks suggest that the proposed tracking method performs favorably against some recently developed CFTs and other competitive trackers.
