Asymmetric Correlation Quantization Hashing for Cross-modal Retrieval

Due to the superiority in similarity computation and database storage for large-scale multiple modalities data, cross-modal hashing methods have attracted extensive attention in similarity retrieval across the heterogeneous modalities. However, there are still some limitations to be further taken into account: (1) most current CMH methods transform real-valued data points into discrete compact binary codes under the binary constraints, limiting the capability of representation for original data on account of abundant loss of information and producing suboptimal hash codes; (2) the discrete binary constraint learning model is hard to solve, where the retrieval performance may greatly reduce by relaxing the binary constraints for large quantization error; (3) handling the learning problem of CMH in a symmetric framework, leading to difficult and complex optimization objective. To address above challenges, in this paper, a novel Asymmetric Correlation Quantization Hashing (ACQH) method is proposed. Specifically, ACQH learns the projection matrixs of heterogeneous modalities data points for transforming query into a low-dimensional real-valued vector in latent semantic space and constructs the stacked compositional quantization embedding in a coarse-to-fine manner for indicating database points by a series of learnt real-valued codeword in the codebook with the help of pointwise label information regression simultaneously. Besides, the unified hash codes across modalities can be directly obtained by the discrete iterative optimization framework devised in the paper. Comprehensive experiments on diverse three benchmark datasets have shown the effectiveness and rationality of ACQH.

Experimental observation the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering based on the detection of entanglement

The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an intermediate quantum nonlocality between entanglement and Bell nonlocality, which plays an important role in quantum information processing tasks. In the past few years, the investigations concerning EPR steering have been demonstrated in a series of experiments. However, these studies rely on the relevant steering inequalities and the choices of measurement settings. Here, we experimentally verify the EPR steering via entanglement detection without using any steering inequality and measurement setting. By constructing two new states from a two-qubit target state, we observe the EPR steering by detecting the entanglement of these new states. The results show that the entanglement of the newly constructed states can be regarded as a new kind of steering witness for target states. Compared to the results of Xiao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 140404 (2017)], we find that the ability of detecting EPR steering in our scenario is stronger than two-setting projective measurements, which can observe more steerable states. Hence, our demonstrations can deepen the understanding of the connection between the EPR steering and entanglement.

Cluster-wise Unsupervised Hashing for Cross-Modal Similarity Search

Large-scale cross-modal hashing similarity retrieval has attracted more and more attention in modern search applications such as search engines and autopilot, showing great superiority in computation and storage. However, current unsupervised cross-modal hashing methods still have some limitations: (1)many methods relax the discrete constraints to solve the optimization objective which may significantly degrade the retrieval performance;(2)most existing hashing model project heterogenous data into a common latent space, which may always lose sight of diversity in heterogenous data;(3)transforming real-valued data point to binary codes always results in abundant loss of information, producing the suboptimal continuous latent space. To overcome above problems, in this paper, a novel Cluster-wise Unsupervised Hashing (CUH) method is proposed. Specifically, CUH jointly performs the multi-view clustering that projects the original data points from different modalities into its own low-dimensional latent semantic space and finds the cluster centroid points and the common clustering indicators in its own low-dimensional space, and learns the compact hash codes and the corresponding linear hash functions. An discrete optimization framework is developed to learn the unified binary codes across modalities under the guidance cluster-wise code-prototypes. The reasonableness and effectiveness of CUH is well demonstrated by comprehensive experiments on diverse benchmark datasets.

Mixed-Precision Quantized Neural Network with Progressively Decreasing Bitwidth For Image Classification and Object Detection

Efficient model inference is an important and practical issue in the deployment of deep neural network on resource constraint platforms. Network quantization addresses this problem effectively by leveraging low-bit representation and arithmetic that could be conducted on dedicated embedded systems. In the previous works, the parameter bitwidth is set homogeneously and there is a trade-off between superior performance and aggressive compression. Actually the stacked network layers, which are generally regarded as hierarchical feature extractors, contribute diversely to the overall performance. For a well-trained neural network, the feature distributions of different categories differentiate gradually as the network propagates forward. Hence the capability requirement on the subsequent feature extractors is reduced. It indicates that the neurons in posterior layers could be assigned with lower bitwidth for quantized neural networks. Based on this observation, a simple but effective mixed-precision quantized neural network with progressively ecreasing bitwidth is proposed to improve the trade-off between accuracy and compression. Extensive experiments on typical network architectures and benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed method could achieve better or comparable results while reducing the memory space for quantized parameters by more than 30\% in comparison with the homogeneous counterparts. In addition, the results also demonstrate that the higher-precision bottom layers could boost the 1-bit network performance appreciably due to a better preservation of the original image information while the lower-precision posterior layers contribute to the regularization of $k-$bit networks.

Fermion Localization and Degenerate Resonances on Brane Array

In this work, we consider the multi-wall braneworld arisen from multi-scalar fields, and investigate the localization and resonances of spin-1/2 fermion on the multi-walls. We build two analytic multi-wall solutions with a polynomial superpotential and a modified sine-Gordon superpotential respectively. The massless fermion is the only bound state and localized between the two outermost sub-branes. The factors affecting the number of massive resonant fermions are analyzed. What interesting is that all the fermion resonant states are non-degenerate for the cases of single- and two-walls, however, doubly-degenerate fermion resonant states emerge for the cases of three- and four-walls. This novel phenomenon could be potentially interesting in phenomenology.

Semi-Supervised Deep Learning Using Improved Unsupervised Discriminant Projection

Deep learning demands a huge amount of well-labeled data to train the network parameters. How to use the least amount of labeled data to obtain the desired classification accuracy is of great practical significance, because for many real-world applications (such as medical diagnosis), it is difficult to obtain so many labeled samples. In this paper, modify the unsupervised discriminant projection algorithm from dimension reduction and apply it as a regularization term to propose a new semi-supervised deep learning algorithm, which is able to utilize both the local and nonlocal distribution of abundant unlabeled samples to improve classification performance. Experiments show that given dozens of labeled samples, the proposed algorithm can train a deep network to attain satisfactory classification results.

Experimental investigation of entropic uncertainty relations and coherence uncertainty relations

Uncertainty relation usually is one of the most important features in quantum mechanics, and is the backbone of quantum theory, which distinguishes from the rule in classical counterpart. Specifically, entropy-based uncertainty relations are of fundamental importance in the region of quantum information theory, offering one nontrivial bound of key rate towards quantum key distribution. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the entropic uncertainty relations and coherence-based uncertainty relations in an all-optics platform. By means of preparing two kinds of bipartite initial states with high fidelity, i.e., Bell-like states and Bell-like diagonal states, we carry on local projective measurements over a complete set of mutually unbiased bases on the measured subsystem. In terms of quantum tomography, the density matrices of the initial states and the post-measurement states are reconstructed. It shows that our experimental results coincide with the theoretical predictions very well. Additionally, we also verify that the lower bounds of both the entropy-based and coherence-based uncertainty can be tightened by imposing the Holevo quantity and mutual information, and the entropic uncertainty is inversely correlated with the coherence. Our demonstrations might offer an insight into their uncertainty relations and their connection to quantum coherence in quantum information science, which might be applicable to the security analysis of quantum key distributions.

CNN-Based Invertible Wavelet Scattering for the Investigation of Diffusion Properties of the In Vivo Human Heart in Diffusion Tensor Imaging

In vivo diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a promising technique to investigate noninvasively the fiber structures of the in vivo human heart. However, signal loss due to motions remains a persistent problem in in vivo cardiac DTI. We propose a novel motion-compensation method for investigating in vivo myocardium structures in DTI with free-breathing acquisitions. The method is based on an invertible Wavelet Scattering achieved by means of Convolutional Neural Network (WSCNN). It consists of first extracting translation-invariant wavelet scattering features from DW images acquired at different trigger delays and then mapping the fused scattering features into motion-compensated spatial DW images by performing an inverse wavelet scattering transform achieved using CNN. The results on both simulated and acquired in vivo cardiac DW images showed that the proposed WSCNN method effectively compensates for motion-induced signal loss and produces in vivo cardiac DW images with better quality and more coherent fiber structures with respect to existing methods, which makes it an interesting method for measuring correctly the diffusion properties of the in vivo human heart in DTI under free breathing.

A Human-AI Loop Approach for Joint Keyword Discovery and Expectation Estimation in Micropost Event Detection

Microblogging platforms such as Twitter are increasingly being used in event detection. Existing approaches mainly use machine learning models and rely on event-related keywords to collect the data for model training. These approaches make strong assumptions on the distribution of the relevant micro-posts containing the keyword -- referred to as the expectation of the distribution -- and use it as a posterior regularization parameter during model training. Such approaches are, however, limited as they fail to reliably estimate the informativeness of a keyword and its expectation for model training. This paper introduces a Human-AI loop approach to jointly discover informative keywords for model training while estimating their expectation. Our approach iteratively leverages the crowd to estimate both keyword specific expectation and the disagreement between the crowd and the model in order to discover new keywords that are most beneficial for model training. These keywords and their expectation not only improve the resulting performance but also make the model training process more transparent. We empirically demonstrate the merits of our approach, both in terms of accuracy and interpretability, on multiple real-world datasets and show that our approach improves the state of the art by 24.3%.

A Generalized Framework for Edge-preserving and Structure-preserving Image Smoothing

Image smoothing is a fundamental procedure in applications of both computer vision and graphics. The required smoothing properties can be different or even contradictive among different tasks. Nevertheless, the inherent smoothing nature of one smoothing operator is usually fixed and thus cannot meet the various requirements of different applications. In this paper, a non-convex non-smooth optimization framework is proposed to achieve diverse smoothing natures where even contradictive smoothing behaviors can be achieved. To this end, we first introduce the truncated Huber penalty function which has seldom been used in image smoothing. A robust framework is then proposed. When combined with the strong flexibility of the truncated Huber penalty function, our framework is capable of a range of applications and can outperform the state-of-the-art approaches in several tasks. In addition, an efficient numerical solution is provided and its convergence is theoretically guaranteed even the optimization framework is non-convex and non-smooth. The effectiveness and superior performance of our approach are validated through comprehensive experimental results in a range of applications.

Adaptive Initialization Method for K-means Algorithm

The K-means algorithm is a widely used clustering algorithm that offers simplicity and efficiency. However, the traditional K-means algorithm uses the random method to determine the initial cluster centers, which make clustering results prone to local optima and then result in worse clustering performance. Many initialization methods have been proposed, but none of them can dynamically adapt to datasets with various characteristics. In our previous research, an initialization method for K-means based on hybrid distance was proposed, and this algorithm can adapt to datasets with different characteristics. However, it has the following drawbacks: (a) When calculating density, the threshold cannot be uniquely determined, resulting in unstable results. (b) Heavily depending on adjusting the parameter, the parameter must be adjusted five times to obtain better clustering results. (c) The time complexity of the algorithm is quadratic, which is difficult to apply to large datasets. In the current paper, we proposed an adaptive initialization method for the K-means algorithm (AIMK) to improve our previous work. AIMK can not only adapt to datasets with various characteristics but also obtain better clustering results within two interactions. In addition, we then leverage random sampling in AIMK, which is named as AIMK-RS, to reduce the time complexity. AIMK-RS is easily applied to large and high-dimensional datasets. We compared AIMK and AIMK-RS with 10 different algorithms on 16 normal and six extra-large datasets. The experimental results show that AIMK and AIMK-RS outperform the current initialization methods and several well-known clustering algorithms. Furthermore, AIMK-RS can significantly reduce the complexity of applying it to extra-large datasets with high dimensions. The time complexity of AIMK-RS is O(n).

Random Fourier Features via Fast Surrogate Leverage Weighted Sampling

In this paper, we propose a fast surrogate leverage weighted sampling strategy to generate refined random Fourier features for kernel approximation. Compared to the current state-of-the-art method that uses the leverage weighted scheme [Li-ICML2019], our new strategy is simpler and more effective. It uses kernel alignment to guide the sampling process and it can avoid the matrix inversion operator when we compute the leverage function. Given n observations and s random features, our strategy can reduce the time complexity from O(ns^2+s^3) to O(ns^2), while achieving comparable (or even slightly better) prediction performance when applied to kernel ridge regression (KRR). In addition, we provide theoretical guarantees on the generalization performance of our approach, and in particular characterize the number of random features required to achieve statistical guarantees in KRR. Experiments on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that our algorithm achieves comparable prediction performance and takes less time cost when compared to [Li-ICML2019].

Motion deviation of test body induced by spin and cosmological constant in extreme mass ratio inspiral binary system

The future space-borne detectors will provide the possibility to detect gravitational waves emitted from extreme mass ratio inspirals of stellar-mass compact objects into supermassive black holes. It is natural to expect that the spin of the compact object and cosmological constant will affect the orbit of the inspiral process and hence lead to the considerable phase shift of the corresponding gravitational waves. In this paper, we investigate the motion of a spinning test particle in the spinning black hole background with a cosmological constant and give the order of motion deviation induced by the particle's spin and the cosmological constant by considering the corresponding innermost stable circular orbit. By taking the neutron star or kerr black hole as the small body, the deviations of the innermost stable circular orbit parameters induced by the particle's spin and cosmological constant are given. Our results show that the deviation induced by particle's spin is much larger than that induced by cosmological constant when the test particle locates not very far away from the black hole, the accumulation of phase shift during the inspiral from the cosmological constant can be ignored when compared to the one induced by the particle's spin. However when the test particle locates very far away from the black hole, the impact from the cosmological constant will increase dramatically. Therefore the accumulation of phase shift for the whole process of inspiral induced by the cosmological constant and the particle's spin should be handled with caution.

Research Commentary on Recommendations with Side Information: A Survey and Research Directions

Recommender systems have become an essential tool to help resolve the information overload problem in recent decades. Traditional recommender systems, however, suffer from data sparsity and cold start problems. To address these issues, a great number of recommendation algorithms have been proposed to leverage side information of users or items (e.g., social network and item category), demonstrating a high degree of effectiveness in improving recommendation performance. This Research Commentary aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic survey of the recent research on recommender systems with side information. Specifically, we provide an overview of state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms with side information from two orthogonal perspectives. One involves the different methodologies of recommendation: the memory-based methods, latent factor, representation learning, and deep learning models. The others cover different representations of side information, including structural data (flat, network, and hierarchical features, and knowledge graphs); and non-structural data (text, image and video features). Finally, we discuss challenges and provide new potential directions in recommendation, along with the conclusion of this survey.

LaplacianNet: Learning on 3D Meshes with Laplacian Encoding and Pooling

3D models are commonly used in computer vision and graphics. With the wider availability of mesh data, an efficient and intrinsic deep learning approach to processing 3D meshes is in great need. Unlike images, 3D meshes have irregular connectivity, requiring careful design to capture relations in the data. To utilize the topology information while staying robust under different triangulation, we propose to encode mesh connectivity using Laplacian spectral analysis, along with Mesh Pooling Blocks (MPBs) that can split the surface domain into local pooling patches and aggregate global information among them. We build a mesh hierarchy from fine to coarse using Laplacian spectral clustering, which is flexible under isometric transformation. Inside the MPBs there are pooling layers to collect local information and multi-layer perceptrons to compute vertex features with increasing complexity. To obtain the relationships among different clusters, we introduce a Correlation Net to compute a correlation matrix, which can aggregate the features globally by matrix multiplication with cluster features. Our network architecture is flexible enough to be used on meshes with different numbers of vertices. We conduct several experiments including shape segmentation and classification, and our LaplacianNet outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms for these tasks on ShapeNet and COSEG datasets.

Band-edge Exciton Fine Structure and Exciton Recombination Dynamics in Single crystals of Layered Hybrid Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) perovskite materials have recently re-attracted intense research interest for applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. As a consequence of the dielectric and quantum confinement effect, they show strongly bound and stable excitons at room temperature. In this report, the band-edge exciton fine structure and in particular its exciton and biexciton dynamics in high quality crystals of (PEA)2PbI4 are investigated. A comparison of bulk and surface exciton lifetimes yields a room temperature surface recombination velocity of 2x10^3cm/s and an intrinsic lifetime of 185ns. Biexciton emission is evidenced at room temperature, with binding energy of about 45meV and a lifetime of 80ps. At low temperature, exciton state splitting is observed, which is caused by the electron-hole exchange interaction. Transient photoluminescence resolves the low-lying dark exciton state, with a bright/dark splitting energy estimated to be 10meV. This work contributes to understand the complex scenario of the elementary photoexcitations in 2D perovskites.

Experimental certification of steering criterion based on general entropic uncertainty relation

Quantum steering describes the phenomenon that one system can be immediately influenced by another with local measurements. It can be detected by the violation of a powerful and useful steering criterion from general entropic uncertainty relation. This criterion, in principle, can be evaluated straightforwardly and achieved by only probability distributions from a finite set of measurement settings. Herein, we experimentally verify the steering criterion by means of the two-photon Werner-like states and three Pauli measurements. The results indicate that quantum steering can be verified by the criterion in a convenient way. In particular, it is no need to perform the usual quantum state tomography in experiment, which reduces the required experimental resources greatly. Moreover, we demonstrate that the criterion is stronger than the linear one for the detecting quantum steering of the Werner-like states.

An Effective Two-Branch Model-Based Deep Network for Single Image Deraining

Removing rain effects from an image is of importance for various applications such as autonomous driving, drone piloting, and photo editing. Conventional methods rely on some heuristics to handcraft various priors to remove or separate the rain effects from an image. Recent deep learning models are proposed to learn end-to-end methods to complete this task. However, they often fail to obtain satisfactory results in many realistic scenarios, especially when the observed images suffer from heavy rain. Heavy rain brings not only rain streaks but also haze-like effect caused by the accumulation of tiny raindrops. Different from the existing deep learning deraining methods that mainly focus on handling the rain streaks, we design a deep neural network by incorporating a physical raining image model. Specifically, in the proposed model, two branches are designed to handle both the rain streaks and haze-like effects. An additional submodule is jointly trained to finally refine the results, which give the model flexibility to control the strength of removing the mist. Extensive experiments on several datasets show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art in both objective assessments and visual quality.
