Acoustic-based Object Detection for Pedestrian Using Smartphone

Walking while using a smartphone is becoming a major pedestrian safety concern as people may unknowingly bump into various obstacles that could lead to severe injuries. In this paper, we propose ObstacleWatch, an acoustic-based obstacle collision detection system to improve the safety of pedestrians who are engaged in smartphone usage while walking. ObstacleWatch leverages the advanced audio hardware of the smartphone to sense the surrounding obstacles and infers fine-grained information about the frontal obstacle for collision detection. In particular, our system emits well-designed inaudible beep signals from the smartphone built-in speaker and listens to the reflections with the stereo recording of the smartphone. By analyzing the reflected signals received at two microphones, ObstacleWatch is able to extract fine-grained information of the frontal obstacle including the distance, angle, and size for detecting the possible collisions and to alert users. Our experimental evaluation under two real-world environments with different types of phones and obstacles shows that ObstacleWatch achieves over 92% accuracy in predicting obstacle collisions with distance estimation errors at about 2 cm. Results also show that ObstacleWatch is robust to different sizes of objects and is compatible with different phone models with low energy consumption.

A Continuous Liveness Detection System for Text-independent Speaker Verification

Voice authentication is drawing increasing attention and becomes an attractive alternative to passwords for mobile authentication. Recent advances in mobile technology further accelerate the adoption of voice biometrics in an array of diverse mobile applications. However, recent studies show that voice authentication is vulnerable to replay attacks, where an adversary can spoof a voice authentication system using a pre-recorded voice sample collected from the victim. In this paper, we propose VoiceLive, a liveness detection system for both text-dependent and text-independent voice authentication on smartphones. VoiceLive detects a live user by leveraging the user's unique vocal system and the stereo recording of smartphones. In particular, utilizing the built-in gyroscope, loudspeaker, and microphone, VoiceLive first measures the smartphone's distance and angle from the user, then it captures the position-specific time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) changes in a sequence of phoneme sounds to the two microphones of the phone, and uses such unique TDoA dynamic which doesn't exist under replay attacks for liveness detection. VoiceLive is practical as it doesn't require additional hardware but two-channel stereo recording that is supported by virtually all smartphones. Our experimental evaluation with 12 participants and different types of phones shows that VoiceLive achieves over 99% detection accuracy at around 1% Equal Error Rate (EER) on the text-dependent system and around 99% accuracy and 2% EER on the text-independent one. Results also show that VoiceLive is robust to different phone positions, i.e. the user is free to hold the smartphone with distinct distances and angles.

Fine-grained Finger Gesture Recognition Using WiFi Signals

Gesture recognition has become increasingly important in human-computer interaction and can support different applications such as smart home, VR, and gaming. Traditional approaches usually rely on dedicated sensors that are worn by the user or cameras that require line of sight. In this paper, we present fine-grained finger gesture recognition by using commodity WiFi without requiring user to wear any sensors. Our system takes advantages of the fine-grained Channel State Information available from commodity WiFi devices and the prevalence of WiFi network infrastructures. It senses and identifies subtle movements of finger gestures by examining the unique patterns exhibited in the detailed CSI. We devise environmental noise removal mechanism to mitigate the effect of signal dynamic due to the environment changes. Moreover, we propose to capture the intrinsic gesture behavior to deal with individual diversity and gesture inconsistency. Lastly, we utilize multiple WiFi links and larger bandwidth at 5GHz to achieve finger gesture recognition under multi-user scenario. Our experimental evaluation in different environments demonstrates that our system can achieve over 90% recognition accuracy and is robust to both environment changes and individual diversity. Results also show that our system can provide accurate gesture recognition under different scenarios.

A Continuous Liveness Detection for Voice Authentication on Smart Devices

Voice biometrics is drawing increasing attention as it is a promising alternative to legacy passwords for user authentication. Recently, a growing body of work shows that voice biometrics is vulnerable to spoofing through replay attacks, where an adversary tries to spoof voice authentication systems by using a pre-recorded voice sample collected from a genuine user. To this end, we propose VoiceGesture, a liveness detection solution for voice authentication on smart devices such as smartphones and smart speakers. VoiceGesture detects a live user by leveraging both the unique articulatory gesture of the user when speaking a passphrase and the audio hardware advances on these smart devices. Specifically, our system re-uses a pair of built-in speaker and microphone on a smart device as a Doppler radar, which transmits a high-frequency acoustic sound from the speaker and listens to the reflections at the microphone when a user speaks a passphrase. Then we extract Doppler shifts resulted from the user's articulatory gestures for liveness detection. VoiceGesture is practical as it requires neither cumbersome operations nor additional hardware but a speaker and a microphone commonly available on smart devices that support voice input. Our experimental evaluation with 21 participants and different smart devices shows that VoiceGesture achieves over 99% and around 98% detection accuracy for text-dependent and text-independent liveness detection, respectively. Results also show that VoiceGesture is robust to different device placements, low audio sampling frequency, and supports medium range liveness detection on smart speakers in various use scenarios like smart homes and smart vehicles.

Object Sensing for Fruit Ripeness Detection Using WiFi Signals

This paper presents FruitSense, a novel fruit ripeness sensing system that leverages wireless signals to enable non-destructive and low-cost detection of fruit ripeness. Such a system can reuse existing WiFi devices in homes without the need for additional sensors. It uses WiFi signals to sense the physiological changes associated with fruit ripening for detecting the ripeness of fruit. FruitSense leverages the larger bandwidth at 5GHz (i.e., over 600MHz) to extract the multipath-independent signal components to characterize the physiological compounds of the fruit. It then measures the similarity between the extracted features and the ones in ripeness profiles for identifying the ripeness level. We evaluate FruitSense in different multipath environments with two types of fruits (i.e, kiwi and avocado) under four levels of ripeness. Experimental results show that FruitSense can detect the ripeness levels of fruits with an accuracy of over 90%.

W-representation of Rainbow tensor model

We analyze the rainbow tensor model and present the Virasoro constraints, where the constraint operators obey the Witt algebra and null 3-algebra. We generalize the method of W-representation in matrix model to the rainbow tensor model, where the operators preserving and increasing the grading play a crucial role. It is shown that the rainbow tensor model can be realized by acting on elementary function with exponent of the operator increasing the grading. We derive the compact expression of correlators and apply it to several models, i.e., the red tensor model, Aristotelian tensor model and r=4 rainbow tensor model. Furthermore, we discuss the case of the non-Gaussian red tensor model and present a dual expression for partition function through differentiation.

Integrated Sensing and Communication with Multi-Domain Cooperation

With the continuous increase of the spectrum and antennas, endogenous sensing is now possible in the fifth generation and future wireless communication systems. However, sensing is a highly complex task for a heterogeneous communication network with massive connections. Seeking multi-domain cooperation is necessary. In this article, we present an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system that performs active, passive, and interactive sensing in different stages of communication through hardware and software. We also propose different methods about how multi-user and multi-frequency band cooperate to further enhance the ISAC system's performance. Finally, we elaborate on the advantages of multi-domain cooperation from the physical layer to the network layer for the ISAC system.

A Novel Multi-scale Dilated 3D CNN for Epileptic Seizure Prediction

Accurate prediction of epileptic seizures allows patients to take preventive measures in advance to avoid possible injuries. In this work, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to analyze time, frequency, and channel information of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. The model uses three-dimensional (3D) kernels to facilitate the feature extraction over the three dimensions. The application of multiscale dilated convolution enables the 3D kernel to have more flexible receptive fields. The proposed CNN model is evaluated with the CHB-MIT EEG database, the experimental results indicate that our model outperforms the existing state-of-the-art, achieves 80.5% accuracy, 85.8% sensitivity and 75.1% specificity.

UniGNN: a Unified Framework for Graph and Hypergraph Neural Networks

Hypergraph, an expressive structure with flexibility to model the higher-order correlations among entities, has recently attracted increasing attention from various research domains. Despite the success of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for graph representation learning, how to adapt the powerful GNN-variants directly into hypergraphs remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose UniGNN, a unified framework for interpreting the message passing process in graph and hypergraph neural networks, which can generalize general GNN models into hypergraphs. In this framework, meticulously-designed architectures aiming to deepen GNNs can also be incorporated into hypergraphs with the least effort. Extensive experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of UniGNN on multiple real-world datasets, which outperform the state-of-the-art approaches with a large margin. Especially for the DBLP dataset, we increase the accuracy from 77.4\% to 88.8\% in the semi-supervised hypernode classification task. We further prove that the proposed message-passing based UniGNN models are at most as powerful as the 1-dimensional Generalized Weisfeiler-Leman (1-GWL) algorithm in terms of distinguishing non-isomorphic hypergraphs. Residual Enhanced Multi-Hypergraph Neural Network

Hypergraphs are a generalized data structure of graphs to model higher-order correlations among entities, which have been successfully adopted into various research domains. Meanwhile, HyperGraph Neural Network (HGNN) is currently the de-facto method for hypergraph representation learning. However, HGNN aims at single hypergraph learning and uses a pre-concatenation approach when confronting multi-modal datasets, which leads to sub-optimal exploitation of the inter-correlations of multi-modal hypergraphs. HGNN also suffers the over-smoothing issue, that is, its performance drops significantly when layers are stacked up. To resolve these issues, we propose the Residual enhanced Multi-Hypergraph Neural Network, which can not only fuse multi-modal information from each hypergraph effectively, but also circumvent the over-smoothing issue associated with HGNN. We conduct experiments on two 3D benchmarks, the NTU and the ModelNet40 datasets, and compare against multiple state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results demonstrate that both the residual hypergraph convolutions and the multi-fusion architecture can improve the performance of the base model and the combined model achieves a new state-of-the-art. Alleviating Class-wise Gradient Imbalance for Pulmonary Airway Segmentation

Automated airway segmentation is a prerequisite for pre-operative diagnosis and intra-operative navigation for pulmonary intervention. Due to the small size and scattered spatial distribution of peripheral bronchi, this is hampered by severe class imbalance between foreground and background regions, which makes it challenging for CNN-based methods to parse distal small airways. In this paper, we demonstrate that this problem is arisen by gradient erosion and dilation of the neighborhood voxels. During back-propagation, if the ratio of the foreground gradient to background gradient is small while the class imbalance is local, the foreground gradients can be eroded by their neighborhoods. This process cumulatively increases the noise information included in the gradient flow from top layers to the bottom ones, limiting the learning of small structures in CNNs. To alleviate this problem, we use group supervision and the corresponding WingsNet to provide complementary gradient flows to enhance the training of shallow layers. To further address the intra-class imbalance between large and small airways, we design a General Union loss function which obviates the impact of airway size by distance-based weights and adaptively tunes the gradient ratio based on the learning process. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can predict the airway structures with higher accuracy and better morphological completeness than the baselines.

One-shot Distibuted Algorithm for PCA with RBF Kernels

This letter proposes a one-shot algorithm for feature-distributed kernel PCA. Our algorithm is inspired by the dual relationship between sample-distributed and feature-distributed scenario. This interesting relationship makes it possible to establish distributed kernel PCA for feature-distributed cases from ideas in distributed PCA in sample-distributed scenario. In theoretical part, we analyze the approximation error for both linear and RBF kernels. The result suggests that when eigenvalues decay fast, the proposed algorithm gives high quality results with low communication cost. This result is also verified by numerical experiments, showing the effectiveness of our algorithm in practice.

Computing the Local Ion Concentration Variations for Electric-Double-Layer-Modulation Microscopy

Modulating the electric potential on a conducting electrode is presented to generate an optical contrast for scattering microscopy that is sensitive to both surface charge and local topography. We dub this method Electric-Double-Layer-Modulation microscopy. We numerically compute the change in the local ion concentration that is the origin of this optical contrast for three experimentally relevant geometries: nanosphere, nanowire, and nanohole. In absence of plasmonic effects and physical absorption, the observable optical contrast is proportional to the derivative of the ion concentration with respect to the modulated potential. We demonstrate that this derivative depends on the size of the object and, less intuitively, also on its surface charge. This dependence is key to measuring the surface charge, in an absolute way, using this method. Our results help to identify the experimental conditions such as dynamic range and sensitivity that will be necessary for detecting the elementary charge jumps. We conclude that the nanohole is the most suitable geometry among these three for achieving elementary charge sensitivity.

Towards Unbiased Random Features with Lower Variance For Stationary Indefinite Kernels

Random Fourier Features (RFF) demonstrate wellappreciated performance in kernel approximation for largescale situations but restrict kernels to be stationary and positive definite. And for non-stationary kernels, the corresponding RFF could be converted to that for stationary indefinite kernels when the inputs are restricted to the unit sphere. Numerous methods provide accessible ways to approximate stationary but indefinite kernels. However, they are either biased or possess large variance. In this article, we propose the generalized orthogonal random features, an unbiased estimation with lower variance.Experimental results on various datasets and kernels verify that our algorithm achieves lower variance and approximation error compared with the existing kernel approximation methods. With better approximation to the originally selected kernels, improved classification accuracy and regression ability is obtained with our approximation algorithm in the framework of support vector machine and regression.

Normalized solutions to the fractional Kirchhoff equations with combined nonlinearities

In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of solutions to the following fractional Kirchhoff equation \begin{equation*} \left(a+b\int_{\mathbb{R}^{3}}|(-Δ)^{\frac{s}{2}}u|^{2}dx\right)(-Δ)^{s}u=λu+μ|u|^{q-2}u+|u|^{p-2}u \quad \hbox{in $\mathbb{R}^3$,} \end{equation*} with a prescribed mass \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R}^{3}}|u|^{2}dx=c^{2}, \end{equation*} where $s\in(0, 1)$, $a, b, c>0$, $2 0$ and $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ as a Lagrange multiplier. Under different assumptions on $q 0$ and $μ>0$, we prove some existence results about the normalized solutions. Our results extend the results of Luo and Zhang (Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 59, 1-35, 2020) to the fractional Kirchhoff equations. Moreover, we give some results about the behavior of the normalized solutions obtained above as $μ\rightarrow0^{+}$.

FastFlowNet: A Lightweight Network for Fast Optical Flow Estimation

Dense optical flow estimation plays a key role in many robotic vision tasks. In the past few years, with the advent of deep learning, we have witnessed great progress in optical flow estimation. However, current networks often consist of a large number of parameters and require heavy computation costs, largely hindering its application on low power-consumption devices such as mobile phones. In this paper, we tackle this challenge and design a lightweight model for fast and accurate optical flow prediction. Our proposed FastFlowNet follows the widely-used coarse-to-fine paradigm with following innovations. First, a new head enhanced pooling pyramid (HEPP) feature extractor is employed to intensify high-resolution pyramid features while reducing parameters. Second, we introduce a new center dense dilated correlation (CDDC) layer for constructing compact cost volume that can keep large search radius with reduced computation burden. Third, an efficient shuffle block decoder (SBD) is implanted into each pyramid level to accelerate flow estimation with marginal drops in accuracy. Experiments on both synthetic Sintel data and real-world KITTI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which needs only 1/10 computation of comparable networks to achieve on par accuracy. In particular, FastFlowNet only contains 1.37M parameters; and can execute at 90 FPS (with a single GTX 1080Ti) or 5.7 FPS (embedded Jetson TX2 GPU) on a pair of Sintel images of resolution 1024x436.

Model-based Learning Network for 3-D Localization in mmWave Communications

This study considers the joint location and velocity estimation of UE and scatterers in a three-dimensional mmWave CRAN architecture. Several existing works have achieved satisfactory results with neural networks (NNs) for localization. However, the black box NN localization method has limited performance and relies on a prohibitive amount of training data. Thus, we propose a model-based learning network for localization by combining NNs with geometric models. Specifically, we first develop an unbiased WLS estimator by utilizing hybrid delay/angular measurements, which determine the location and velocity of the UE in only one estimator, and can obtain the location and velocity of scatterers further. The proposed estimator can achieve the CRLB and outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Second, we establish a NN-assisted localization method (NN-WLS) by replacing the linear approximations in the proposed WLS localization model with NNs to learn higher-order error components, thereby enhancing the performance of the estimator. The solution possesses the powerful learning ability of the NN and the robustness of the proposed geometric model. Moreover, the ensemble learning is applied to improve the localization accuracy further. Comprehensive simulations show that the proposed NN-WLS is superior to the benchmark methods in terms of localization accuracy, robustness, and required time resources.

Unsupervised Motion Representation Enhanced Network for Action Recognition

Learning reliable motion representation between consecutive frames, such as optical flow, has proven to have great promotion to video understanding. However, the TV-L1 method, an effective optical flow solver, is time-consuming and expensive in storage for caching the extracted optical flow. To fill the gap, we propose UF-TSN, a novel end-to-end action recognition approach enhanced with an embedded lightweight unsupervised optical flow estimator. UF-TSN estimates motion cues from adjacent frames in a coarse-to-fine manner and focuses on small displacement for each level by extracting pyramid of feature and warping one to the other according to the estimated flow of the last level. Due to the lack of labeled motion for action datasets, we constrain the flow prediction with multi-scale photometric consistency and edge-aware smoothness. Compared with state-of-the-art unsupervised motion representation learning methods, our model achieves better accuracy while maintaining efficiency, which is competitive with some supervised or more complicated approaches.
