Demographic Biases of Crowd Workers in Key Opinion Leaders Finding

Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) are people that have a strong influence and their opinions are listened to by people when making important decisions. Crowdsourcing provides an efficient and cost-effective means to gather data for the KOL finding task. However, data collected through crowdsourcing is affected by the inherent demographic biases of crowd workers. To avoid such demographic biases, we need to measure how biased each crowd worker is. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach based on demographic information of candidate KOLs and their counterfactual value. We argue that it is effectiveness because of the extra information that we can consider together with labeled data to curate a less biased dataset.

Osteoporosis Prescreening using Panoramic Radiographs through a Deep Convolutional Neural Network with Attention Mechanism

Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) with an attention module can detect osteoporosis on panoramic radiographs. Study Design. A dataset of 70 panoramic radiographs (PRs) from 70 different subjects of age between 49 to 60 was used, including 49 subjects with osteoporosis and 21 normal subjects. We utilized the leave-one-out cross-validation approach to generate 70 training and test splits. Specifically, for each split, one image was used for testing and the remaining 69 images were used for training. A deep convolutional neural network (CNN) using the Siamese architecture was implemented through a fine-tuning process to classify an PR image using patches extracted from eight representative trabecula bone areas (Figure 1). In order to automatically learn the importance of different PR patches, an attention module was integrated into the deep CNN. Three metrics, including osteoporosis accuracy (OPA), non-osteoporosis accuracy (NOPA) and overall accuracy (OA), were utilized for performance evaluation. Results. The proposed baseline CNN approach achieved the OPA, NOPA and OA scores of 0.667, 0.878 and 0.814, respectively. With the help of the attention module, the OPA, NOPA and OA scores were further improved to 0.714, 0.939 and 0.871, respectively. Conclusions. The proposed method obtained promising results using deep CNN with an attention module, which might be applied to osteoporosis prescreening.

AEFE: Automatic Embedded Feature Engineering for Categorical Features

The challenge of solving data mining problems in e-commerce applications such as recommendation system (RS) and click-through rate (CTR) prediction is how to make inferences by constructing combinatorial features from a large number of categorical features while preserving the interpretability of the method. In this paper, we propose Automatic Embedded Feature Engineering(AEFE), an automatic feature engineering framework for representing categorical features, which consists of various components including custom paradigm feature construction and multiple feature selection. By selecting the potential field pairs intelligently and generating a series of interpretable combinatorial features, our framework can provide a set of unseen generated features for enhancing model performance and then assist data analysts in discovering the feature importance for particular data mining tasks. Furthermore, AEFE is distributed implemented by task-parallelism, data sampling, and searching schema based on Matrix Factorization field combination, to optimize the performance and enhance the efficiency and scalability of the framework. Experiments conducted on some typical e-commerce datasets indicate that our method outperforms the classical machine learning models and state-of-the-art deep learning models.

3D Human Pose Estimation for Free-form Activity Using WiFi Signals

WiFi human sensing has become increasingly attractive in enabling emerging human-computer interaction applications. The corresponding technique has gradually evolved from the classification of multiple activity types to more fine-grained tracking of 3D human poses. However, existing WiFi-based 3D human pose tracking is limited to a set of predefined activities. In this work, we present Winect, a 3D human pose tracking system for free-form activity using commodity WiFi devices. Our system tracks free-form activity by estimating a 3D skeleton pose that consists of a set of joints of the human body. In particular, we combine signal separation and joint movement modeling to achieve free-form activity tracking. Our system first identifies the moving limbs by leveraging the two-dimensional angle of arrival of the signals reflected off the human body and separates the entangled signals for each limb. Then, it tracks each limb and constructs a 3D skeleton of the body by modeling the inherent relationship between the movements of the limb and the corresponding joints. Our evaluation results show that Winect is environment-independent and achieves centimeter-level accuracy for free-form activity tracking under various challenging environments including the none-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios.

Role of equilibrium fluctuations in light-induced order

Engineering novel states of matter with light is at the forefront of materials research. An intensely studied direction is to realize broken-symmetry phases that are "hidden" under equilibrium conditions but can be unleashed by an ultrashort laser pulse. Despite a plethora of experimental discoveries, the nature of these orders and how they transiently appear remain unclear. To this end, we investigate a nonequilibrium charge density wave (CDW) in rare-earth tritellurides, which is suppressed in equilibrium but emerges after photoexcitation. Using a pump-pump-probe protocol implemented in ultrafast electron diffraction, we demonstrate that the light-induced CDW consists solely of order parameter fluctuations, which bear striking similarities to critical fluctuations in equilibrium despite differences in the length scale. By calculating the dynamics of CDW fluctuations in a nonperturbative model, we further show that the strength of the light-induced order is governed by the amplitude of equilibrium fluctuations. These findings highlight photoinduced fluctuations as an important ingredient for the emergence of transient orders out of equilibrium. Our results further suggest that materials with strong fluctuations in equilibrium are promising platforms to host "hidden" orders after laser excitation.

Context-guided Triple Matching for Multiple Choice Question Answering

The task of multiple choice question answering (MCQA) refers to identifying a suitable answer from multiple candidates, by estimating the matching score among the triple of the passage, question and answer. Despite the general research interest in this regard, existing methods decouple the process into several pair-wise or dual matching steps, that limited the ability of assessing cases with multiple evidence sentences. To alleviate this issue, this paper introduces a novel Context-guided Triple Matching algorithm, which is achieved by integrating a Triple Matching (TM) module and a Contrastive Regularization (CR). The former is designed to enumerate one component from the triple as the background context, and estimate its semantic matching with the other two. Additionally, the contrastive term is further proposed to capture the dissimilarity between the correct answer and distractive ones. We validate the proposed algorithm on several benchmarking MCQA datasets, which exhibits competitive performances against state-of-the-arts.

Phase Noise Model for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Using a Local Local Oscillator

The value of residual phase noise, after phase compensation, is one of the key limitations of performance improvement for continuous-variable quantum key distribution using a local local oscillator (LLO CV-QKD) system, since it is the major excess noise. However, due to the non-ideality of the realistic devices implemented in practice, for example, imperfect lasers, detectors and unbalanced interferometers, the value of residual phase noise in current system is still relatively large. Here, we develop a phase noise model to improve the phase noise tolerance of the LLO CV-QKD schemes. In our model, part of the phase-reference measurement noise associated with detection efficiency and electronic noise of Bob's detector as well as a real-time monitored phasereference intensity at Bob's side is considered trusted because it can be locally calibrated by Bob. We show that using our phase noise model can significantly improve the secure key rate and transmission distance of the LLO CV-QKD system. We further conduct an experiment to substantiate the superiority of the phase noise model. Based on experimental data of a LLO CV-QKD system in the 25 km optical fiber channel, we demonstrate that the secure key rate under our phase noise model is approximately 40% higher than that under the conventional phase noise model.

Rotation Equivariant Feature Image Pyramid Network for Object Detection in Optical Remote Sensing Imagery

Detection of objects is extremely important in various aerial vision-based applications. Over the last few years, the methods based on convolution neural networks have made substantial progress. However, because of the large variety of object scales, densities, and arbitrary orientations, the current detectors struggle with the extraction of semantically strong features for small-scale objects by a predefined convolution kernel. To address this problem, we propose the rotation equivariant feature image pyramid network (REFIPN), an image pyramid network based on rotation equivariance convolution. The proposed model adopts single-shot detector in parallel with a lightweight image pyramid module to extract representative features and generate regions of interest in an optimization approach. The proposed network extracts feature in a wide range of scales and orientations by using novel convolution filters. These features are used to generate vector fields and determine the weight and angle of the highest-scoring orientation for all spatial locations on an image. By this approach, the performance for small-sized object detection is enhanced without sacrificing the performance for large-sized object detection. The performance of the proposed model is validated on two commonly used aerial benchmarks and the results show our proposed model can achieve state-of-the-art performance with satisfactory efficiency.

Multi-patch Feature Pyramid Network for Weakly Supervised Object Detection in Optical Remote Sensing Images

Object detection is a challenging task in remote sensing because objects only occupy a few pixels in the images, and the models are required to simultaneously learn object locations and detection. Even though the established approaches well perform for the objects of regular sizes, they achieve weak performance when analyzing small ones or getting stuck in the local minima (e.g. false object parts). Two possible issues stand in their way. First, the existing methods struggle to perform stably on the detection of small objects because of the complicated background. Second, most of the standard methods used hand-crafted features, and do not work well on the detection of objects parts of which are missing. We here address the above issues and propose a new architecture with a multiple patch feature pyramid network (MPFP-Net). Different from the current models that during training only pursue the most discriminative patches, in MPFPNet the patches are divided into class-affiliated subsets, in which the patches are related and based on the primary loss function, a sequence of smooth loss functions are determined for the subsets to improve the model for collecting small object parts. To enhance the feature representation for patch selection, we introduce an effective method to regularize the residual values and make the fusion transition layers strictly norm-preserving. The network contains bottom-up and crosswise connections to fuse the features of different scales to achieve better accuracy, compared to several state-of-the-art object detection models. Also, the developed architecture is more efficient than the baselines.

An End-to-End Deep Learning Approach for Epileptic Seizure Prediction

An accurate seizure prediction system enables early warnings before seizure onset of epileptic patients. It is extremely important for drug-refractory patients. Conventional seizure prediction works usually rely on features extracted from Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings and classification algorithms such as regression or support vector machine (SVM) to locate the short time before seizure onset. However, such methods cannot achieve high-accuracy prediction due to information loss of the hand-crafted features and the limited classification ability of regression and SVM algorithms. We propose an end-to-end deep learning solution using a convolutional neural network (CNN) in this paper. One and two dimensional kernels are adopted in the early- and late-stage convolution and max-pooling layers, respectively. The proposed CNN model is evaluated on Kaggle intracranial and CHB-MIT scalp EEG datasets. Overall sensitivity, false prediction rate, and area under receiver operating characteristic curve reaches 93.5%, 0.063/h, 0.981 and 98.8%, 0.074/h, 0.988 on two datasets respectively. Comparison with state-of-the-art works indicates that the proposed model achieves exceeding prediction performance.

An Ear Canal Deformation Based User Authentication Using Ear Wearable Devices

Biometric-based authentication is gaining increasing attention for wearables and mobile applications. Meanwhile, the growing adoption of sensors in wearables also provides opportunities to capture novel wearable biometrics. In this work, we propose EarDynamic, an ear canal deformation-based user authentication using in-ear wearables. EarDynamic provides continuous and passive user authentication and is transparent to users. It leverages ear canal deformation that combines the unique static geometry and dynamic motions of the ear canal when the user is speaking for authentication. It utilizes an acoustic sensing approach to capture the ear canal deformation with the built-in microphone and speaker of the in-ear wearable. Specifically, it first emits well-designed inaudible beep signals and records the reflected signals from the ear canal. It then analyzes the reflected signals and extracts fine-grained acoustic features that correspond to the ear canal deformation for user authentication. Our extensive experimental evaluation shows that EarDynamic can achieve a recall of 97.38% and an F1 score of 96.84%. Results also show that our system works well under different noisy environments with various daily activities.

Enabling Plug-and-Play and Crowdsourcing SLAM in Wireless Communication Systems

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) during communication is emerging. This technology promises to provide information on propagation environments and transceivers' location, thus creating several new services and applications for the Internet of Things and environment-aware communication. Using crowdsourcing data collected by multiple agents appears to be much potential for enhancing SLAM performance. However, the measurement uncertainties in practice and biased estimations from multiple agents may result in serious errors. This study develops a robust SLAM method with measurement plug-and-play and crowdsourcing mechanisms to address the above problems. First, we divide measurements into different categories according to their unknown biases and realize a measurement plug-and-play mechanism by extending the classic belief propagation (BP)-based SLAM method. The proposed mechanism can obtain the time-varying agent location, radio features, and corresponding measurement biases (such as clock bias, orientation bias, and received signal strength model parameters), with high accuracy and robustness in challenging scenarios without any prior information on anchors and agents. Next, we establish a probabilistic crowdsourcing-based SLAM mechanism, in which multiple agents cooperate to construct and refine the radio map in a decentralized manner. Our study presents the first BP-based crowdsourcing that resolves the "double count" and "data reliability" problems through the flexible application of probabilistic data association methods. Numerical results reveal that the crowdsourcing mechanism can further improve the accuracy of the mapping result, which, in turn, ensures the decimeter-level localization accuracy of each agent in a challenging propagation environment.

A Generalized Framework for Edge-preserving and Structure-preserving Image Smoothing

Image smoothing is a fundamental procedure in applications of both computer vision and graphics. The required smoothing properties can be different or even contradictive among different tasks. Nevertheless, the inherent smoothing nature of one smoothing operator is usually fixed and thus cannot meet the various requirements of different applications. In this paper, we first introduce the truncated Huber penalty function which shows strong flexibility under different parameter settings. A generalized framework is then proposed with the introduced truncated Huber penalty function. When combined with its strong flexibility, our framework is able to achieve diverse smoothing natures where contradictive smoothing behaviors can even be achieved. It can also yield the smoothing behavior that can seldom be achieved by previous methods, and superior performance is thus achieved in challenging cases. These together enable our framework capable of a range of applications and able to outperform the state-of-the-art approaches in several tasks, such as image detail enhancement, clip-art compression artifacts removal, guided depth map restoration, image texture removal, etc. In addition, an efficient numerical solution is provided and its convergence is theoretically guaranteed even the optimization framework is non-convex and non-smooth. A simple yet effective approach is further proposed to reduce the computational cost of our method while maintaining its performance. The effectiveness and superior performance of our approach are validated through comprehensive experiments in a range of applications. Our code is available at https://github.com/wliusjtu/Generalized-Smoothing-Framework.

An extended watershed-based zonal statistical AHP model for flood risk estimation: Constraining runoff converging related indicators by sub-watersheds

Floods are highly uncertain events, occurring in different regions, with varying prerequisites and intensities. A highly reliable flood disaster risk map can help reduce the impact of floods for flood management, disaster decreasing, and urbanization resilience. In flood risk estimation, the widely used analytic hierarchy process (AHP) usually adopts pixel as a basic unit, it cannot capture the similar threaten caused by neighborhood source flooding cells at sub-watershed scale. Thus, an extended watershed-based zonal statistical AHP model constraining runoff converging related indicators by sub-watersheds (WZSAHP-Slope & Stream) is proposed to fill this gap. Taking the Chaohu basin as test case, we validated the proposed method with a real-flood area extracted in July 2020. The results indicate that the WZSAHP-Slope & Stream model using multiple flow direction division watersheds to calculate statistics of distance from stream and slope by maximum statistic method outperformed other tested methods. Compering with pixel-based AHP method, the proposed method can improve the correct ratio by 16% (from 67% to 83%) and fit ratio by 1% (from 13% to 14%) as in validation 1, and improve the correct ratio by 37% (from 23% to 60%) and fit ratio by 6% (from 12% to 18%) as in validation 2.

Liquid Sensing Using WiFi Signals

The popularity of Internet-of-Things (IoT) has provided us with unprecedented opportunities to enable a variety of emerging services in a smart home environment. Among those services, sensing the liquid level in a container is critical to building many smart home and mobile healthcare applications that improve the quality of life. This paper presents LiquidSense, a liquid-level sensing system that is low-cost, high accuracy, widely applicable to different daily liquids and containers, and can be easily integrated with existing smart home networks. LiquidSense uses an existing home WiFi network and a low-cost transducer that attached to the container to sense the resonance of the container for liquid level detection. In particular, our system mounts a low-cost transducer on the surface of the container and emits a well-designed chirp signal to make the container resonant, which introduces subtle changes to the home WiFi signals. By analyzing the subtle phase changes of the WiFi signals, LiquidSense extracts the resonance frequency as a feature for liquid level detection. Our system constructs prediction models for both continuous and discrete predictions using curve fitting and SVM respectively. We evaluate LiquidSense in home environments with containers of three different materials and six types of liquids. Results show that LiquidSense achieves an overall accuracy of 97% for continuous prediction and an overall F-score of 0.968 for discrete prediction. Results also show that our system has a large coverage in a home environment and works well under non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios.

supervised adptive threshold network for instance segmentation

Currently, instance segmentation is attracting more and more attention in machine learning region. However, there exists some defects on the information propagation in previous Mask R-CNN and other network models. In this paper, we propose supervised adaptive threshold network for instance segmentation. Specifically, we adopt the Mask R-CNN method based on adaptive threshold, and by establishing a layered adaptive network structure, it performs adaptive binarization on the probability graph generated by Mask RCNN to obtain better segmentation effect and reduce the error rate. At the same time, an adaptive feature pool is designed to make the transmission between different layers of the network more accurate and effective, reduce the loss in the process of feature transmission, and further improve the mask method. Experiments on benchmark data sets indicate that the effectiveness of the proposed model

Multi-User Activity Recognition and Tracking Using Commodity WiFi

This paper presents MultiTrack, a commodity WiFi-based human sensing system that can track multiple users and recognize the activities of multiple users performing them simultaneously. Such a system can enable easy and large-scale deployment for multi-user tracking and sensing without the need for additional sensors through the use of existing WiFi devices (e.g., desktops, laptops, and smart appliances). The basic idea is to identify and extract the signal reflection corresponding to each individual user with the help of multiple WiFi links and all the available WiFi channels at 5GHz. Given the extracted signal reflection of each user, MultiTrack examines the path of the reflected signals at multiple links to simultaneously track multiple users. It further reconstructs the signal profile of each user as if only a single user has performed activity in the environment to facilitate multi-user activity recognition. We evaluate MultiTrack in different multipath environments with up to 4 users for multi-user tracking and up to 3 users for activity recognition. Experimental results show that our system can achieve decimeter localization accuracy and over 92% activity recognition accuracy under multi-user scenarios.
