Comparing Biases and the Impact of Multilingual Training across Multiple Languages

Studies in bias and fairness in natural language processing have primarily examined social biases within a single language and/or across few attributes (e.g. gender, race). However, biases can manifest differently across various languages for individual attributes. As a result, it is critical to examine biases within each language and attribute. Of equal importance is to study how these biases compare across languages and how the biases are affected when training a model on multilingual data versus monolingual data. We present a bias analysis across Italian, Chinese, English, Hebrew, and Spanish on the downstream sentiment analysis task to observe whether specific demographics are viewed more positively. We study bias similarities and differences across these languages and investigate the impact of multilingual vs. monolingual training data. We adapt existing sentiment bias templates in English to Italian, Chinese, Hebrew, and Spanish for four attributes: race, religion, nationality, and gender. Our results reveal similarities in bias expression such as favoritism of groups that are dominant in each language's culture (e.g. majority religions and nationalities). Additionally, we find an increased variation in predictions across protected groups, indicating bias amplification, after multilingual finetuning in comparison to multilingual pretraining.

Observation of Large-Number Corner Modes in $\mathbb{Z}$-class Higher-Order Topolectrical Circuits

Topological corner states are exotic topological boundary states that are bounded to zero-dimensional geometry even the dimension of systems is large than one. As an elegant physical correspondence, their numbers are dictated by the bulk topological invariants. So far, all previous realizations of HOTIs are hallmarked by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariants and therefore have only one corner state at each corner. Here we report an experimental demonstration of $\mathbb{Z}$-class HOTI phases in electric circuits, hosting $N$ corner modes at each single corner structure. By measuring the impedance spectra and distributions, we clearly demonstrate the $\mathbb{Z}$-class HOTI phases, including the zero-energy corner modes and their density distributions. Moreover, we reveal that the local density of states (LDOS) at each corner for $N=4$ are equally distributed at four corner unit cells, prominently differing from $\mathbb{Z}_2$-class case where the LDOS only dominates over one corner unit cell. Our results extend the observation of HOTIs from $\mathbb{Z}_2$ class to $\mathbb{Z}$ class and the coexistence of spatially overlapped large number of corner modes which may enable exotic topological devices that require high degeneracy boundary states.

Weakly-supervised ROI extraction method based on contrastive learning for remote sensing images

ROI extraction is an active but challenging task in remote sensing because of the complicated landform, the complex boundaries and the requirement of annotations. Weakly supervised learning (WSL) aims at learning a mapping from input image to pixel-wise prediction under image-wise labels, which can dramatically decrease the labor cost. However, due to the imprecision of labels, the accuracy and time consumption of WSL methods are relatively unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose a two-step ROI extraction based on contractive learning. Firstly, we present to integrate multiscale Grad-CAM to obtain pseudo pixelwise annotations with well boundaries. Then, to reduce the compact of misjudgments in pseudo annotations, we construct a contrastive learning strategy to encourage the features inside ROI as close as possible and separate background features from foreground features. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposal. Code is available at https://github.com/HE-Lingfeng/ROI-Extraction

A property on monochromatic copies of graphs containing a triangle

A graph $H$ is called common and respectively, strongly common if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-coloring $ϕ$ of a large clique is asymptotically minimised by the random coloring with an equal proportion of each color and respectively, by the random coloring with the same proportion of each color as in $ϕ$. A well-known theorem of Jagger, {\v S}t'ov{\' i}{\v c}ek and Thomason states that every graph containing a $K_4$ is not common. Here we prove an analogous result that every graph containing a $K_3$ and with at least four edges is not strongly common.

Simple Yet Effective Synthetic Dataset Construction for Unsupervised Opinion Summarization

Opinion summarization provides an important solution for summarizing opinions expressed among a large number of reviews. However, generating aspect-specific and general summaries is challenging due to the lack of annotated data. In this work, we propose two simple yet effective unsupervised approaches to generate both aspect-specific and general opinion summaries by training on synthetic datasets constructed with aspect-related review contents. Our first approach, Seed Words Based Leave-One-Out (SW-LOO), identifies aspect-related portions of reviews simply by exact-matching aspect seed words and outperforms existing methods by 3.4 ROUGE-L points on SPACE and 0.5 ROUGE-1 point on OPOSUM+ for aspect-specific opinion summarization. Our second approach, Natural Language Inference Based Leave-One-Out (NLI-LOO) identifies aspect-related sentences utilizing an NLI model in a more general setting without using seed words and outperforms existing approaches by 1.2 ROUGE-L points on SPACE for aspect-specific opinion summarization and remains competitive on other metrics.

Giant phonon softening and avoided crossing in aliovalence-doped heavy-band thermoelectrics

Aliovalent doping has been adopted to optimize the electrical properties of semiconductors, while its impact on the phonon structure and propagation is seldom paid proper attention to. This work reveals that aliovalent doping can be much more effective in reducing the lattice thermal conductivity of thermoelectric semiconductors than the commonly employed isoelectronic alloying strategy. As demonstrated in the heavy-band NbFeSb system, a large reduction of 65% in the lattice thermal conductivity is achieved through only 10% aliovalent Hf-doping, compared to the 4 times higher isoelectronic Ta-alloying. It is elucidated that aliovalent doping introduces free charge carriers and enhances the screening, leading to the giant softening and deceleration of optical phonons. Moreover, the heavy dopant can induce the avoided-crossing of acoustic and optical phonon branches, further decelerating the acoustic phonons. These results highlight the significant role of aliovalent dopants in regulating the phonon structure and suppressing the phonon propagation of semiconductors.

Health Monitoring of Movement Disorder Subject based on Diamond Stacked Sparse Autoencoder Ensemble Model

The health monitoring of chronic diseases is very important for people with movement disorders because of their limited mobility and long duration of chronic diseases. Machine learning-based processing of data collected from the human with movement disorders using wearable sensors is an effective method currently available for health monitoring. However, wearable sensor systems are difficult to obtain high-quality and large amounts of data, which cannot meet the requirement for diagnostic accuracy. Moreover, existing machine learning methods do not handle this problem well. Feature learning is key to machine learning. To solve this problem, a health monitoring of movement disorder subject based on diamond stacked sparse autoencoder ensemble model (DsaeEM) is proposed in this paper. This algorithm has two major components. First, feature expansion is designed using feature-embedded stacked sparse autoencoder (FSSAE). Second, a feature reduction mechanism is designed to remove the redundancy among the expanded features. This mechanism includes L1 regularized feature-reduction algorithm and the improved manifold dimensionality reduction algorithm. This paper refers to the combined feature expansion and feature reduction mechanism as the diamond-like feature learning mechanism. The method is experimentally verified with several state of art algorithms and on two datasets. The results show that the proposed algorithm has higher accuracy apparently. In conclusion, this study developed an effective and feasible feature-learning algorithm for the recognition of chronic diseases.

On local Turán density problems of hypergraphs

For integers $q\ge p\ge r\ge2$, we say that an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ has property $(q,p)$, if for any $q$-vertex subset $Q$ of $V(H)$, there exists a $p$-vertex subset $P$ of $Q$ spanning a clique in $H$. Let $T_{r}(n,q,p)=\min\{ e(H): H\subset \binom{[n]}{r}, H \text{~has property~} (q,p)\}$. The local Turán density about property $(q,p)$ in $r$-uniform hypergraphs is defined as $t_{r}(q,p)=\lim_{n\to \infty}T_{r}(n,q,p)/\binom{n}{r}$. Frankl, Huang and Rödl [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 177 (2021)] showed that $\lim_{p\to\infty}t_{r}(ap+1,p+1)=\frac{1}{a^{r-1}}$ for positive integer $a$ and $t_{3}(2p+1,p+1)=\frac{1}{4}$ for all $p\ge 3$ and asked the question that determining the value of $\lim_{p\to\infty}t_{r}(γp+1,p+1)$, where $γ\ge 1$ is a real number. Based on the study of hypergraph Turán densities, we determine some exact values of local Turán densities and answer their question partially; in particular, our results imply that the equality in their question about exact values does not hold in general.

Optimal bisections of directed graphs

In this paper, motivated by a problem of Scott and a conjecture of Lee, Loh and Sudakov we consider bisections of directed graphs. We prove that every directed graph with $m$ arcs and minimum semidegree at least $d$ admits a bisection in which at least $\left(\frac{d}{2(2d+1)}+o(1)\right)m$ arcs cross in each direction. This provides an optimal bound as well as a positive answer to a question of Hou and Wu in a stronger form.

Magnetic field effects on the quantum spin liquid behaviors of NaYbS$_2$

Spin-orbit coupling is an important ingredient to regulate the many-body physics, especially for many spin liquid candidate materials such as rare-earth magnets and Kitaev materials. The rare-earth chalcogenides NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch = O, S, Se) is a congenital frustrating system to exhibit the intrinsic landmark of spin liquid by eliminating both the site disorders between Na$^{+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions with the big ionic size difference and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with the perfect triangular lattice of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions. The temperature versus magnetic-field phase diagram is established by the magnetization, specific heat, and neutron-scattering measurements. Notably, the neutron diffraction spectra and the magnetization curve might provide microscopic evidence for a series of spin configuration for in-plane fields, which include the disordered spin liquid state, 120$^{o}$ antiferromagnet, and one-half magnetization state. Furthermore, the ground state is suggested to be a gapless spin liquid from inelastic neutron scattering, and the magnetic field adjusts the spin orbit coupling. Therefore, the strong spin-orbit coupling in the frustrated quantum magnet substantially enriches low-energy spin physics. This rare-earth family could offer a good platform for exploring the quantum spin liquid ground state and quantum magnetic transitions.

Negligible obstructions and Turán exponents

We show that for every rational number $r \in (1,2)$ of the form $2 - a/b$, where $a, b \in \mathbb{N}^+$ satisfy $\lfloor b/a \rfloor^3 \le a \le b / (\lfloor b/a \rfloor +1) + 1$, there exists a graph $F_r$ such that the Turán number $\operatorname{ex}(n, F_r) = Θ(n^r)$. Our result in particular generates infinitely many new Turán exponents. As a byproduct, we formulate a framework that is taking shape in recent work on the Bukh--Conlon conjecture.

Bipartite-ness under smooth conditions

Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs, the {\it Zarankiewicz number} $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $m$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph (such $G$ is called {\it $\mathcal{F}$-free}). For $1\leq β<α<2$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs is $(α,β)$-{\it smooth} if for some $ρ>0$ and every $m\leq n$, $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})=ρm n^{α-1}+O(n^β)$. Motivated by their work on a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits on compactness and a classic result of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, in \cite{AKSV} Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte proved that for any $(α,β)$-smooth family $\mathcal{F}$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $ρ(\frac{2n}{5}+o(n))^{α-1}$ is bipartite. In this paper, we strengthen their result by showing that for every real $δ>0$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $δn^{α-1}$ is bipartite. Furthermore, our result holds under a more relaxed notion of smoothness, which include the families $\mathcal{F}$ consisting of the single graph $K_{s,t}$ when $t\gg s$. We also prove an analogous result for $C_{2\ell}$-free graphs for every $\ell\geq 2$, which complements a result of Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte in \cite{KSV}.

On the maximum number of edges in k-critical graphs

A graph is called $k$-critical if its chromatic number is $k$ but any proper subgraph has chromatic number less than $k$. An old and important problem in graph theory asks to determine the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical graph. This is widely open for any integer $k\geq 4$. Using a structural characterization of Greenwell and Lovász and an extremal result of Simonovits, Stiebitz proved in 1987 that for $k\geq 4$ and sufficiently large $n$, this maximum number is less than the number of edges in the $n$-vertex balanced complete $(k-2)$-partite graph. In this paper we obtain the first improvement on the above result in the past 35 years. Our proofs combine arguments from extremal graph theory as well as some structural analysis. A key lemma we use indicates a partial structure in dense $k$-critical graphs, which may be of independent interest.

On extremal numbers of the triangle plus the four-cycle

For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, let $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which contains none of the members of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. A longstanding problem in extremal graph theory asks to determine the function $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$. Here we give a new construction for dense graphs of girth at least five with arbitrary number of vertices, providing the first improvement on the lower bound of $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$ since 1976. As a corollary, this yields a negative answer to a problem in Chung-Graham [3].

Context-Aware Data Augmentation for LIDAR 3D Object Detection

For 3D object detection, labeling lidar point cloud is difficult, so data augmentation is an important module to make full use of precious annotated data. As a widely used data augmentation method, GT-sample effectively improves detection performance by inserting groundtruths into the lidar frame during training. However, these samples are often placed in unreasonable areas, which misleads model to learn the wrong context information between targets and backgrounds. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a context-aware data augmentation method (CA-aug) , which ensures the reasonable placement of inserted objects by calculating the "Validspace" of the lidar point cloud. CA-aug is lightweight and compatible with other augmentation methods. Compared with the GT-sample and the similar method in Lidar-aug(SOTA), it brings higher accuracy to the existing detectors. We also present an in-depth study of augmentation methods for the range-view-based(RV-based) models and find that CA-aug can fully exploit the potential of RV-based networks. The experiment on KITTI val split shows that CA-aug can improve the mAP of the test model by 8%.

A new Stack Autoencoder: Neighbouring Sample Envelope Embedded Stack Autoencoder Ensemble Model

Stack autoencoder (SAE), as a representative deep network, has unique and excellent performance in feature learning, and has received extensive attention from researchers. However, existing deep SAEs focus on original samples without considering the hierarchical structural information between samples. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a new SAE model-neighbouring envelope embedded stack autoencoder ensemble (NE_ESAE). Firstly, the neighbouring sample envelope learning mechanism (NSELM) is proposed for preprocessing of input of SAE. NSELM constructs sample pairs by combining neighbouring samples. Besides, the NSELM constructs a multilayer sample spaces by multilayer iterative mean clustering, which considers the similar samples and generates layers of envelope samples with hierarchical structural information. Second, an embedded stack autoencoder (ESAE) is proposed and trained in each layer of sample space to consider the original samples during training and in the network structure, thereby better finding the relationship between original feature samples and deep feature samples. Third, feature reduction and base classifiers are conducted on the layers of envelope samples respectively, and output classification results of every layer of samples. Finally, the classification results of the layers of envelope sample space are fused through the ensemble mechanism. In the experimental section, the proposed algorithm is validated with over ten representative public datasets. The results show that our method significantly has better performance than existing traditional feature learning methods and the representative deep autoencoders.

Tight bounds towards a conjecture of Gallai

We prove that for $n>k\geq 3$, if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with chromatic number $k$ but any its proper subgraph has smaller chromatic number, then $G$ contains at most $n-k+3$ copies of cliques of size $k-1$. This answers a problem of Abbott and Zhou and provides a tight bound on a conjecture of Gallai.

On two cycles of consecutive even lengths

Bondy and Vince showed that every graph with minimum degree at least three contains two cycles of lengths differing by one or two.We prove the following average degree counterpart that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with at least $\frac52(n-1)$ edges, unless $4|(n-1)$ and every block of $G$ is a clique $K_5$, contains two cycles of consecutive even lengths. Our proof is mainly based on structural analysis, and a crucial step which may be of independent interest shows that the same conclusion holds for every 3-connected graph with at least 6 vertices. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Verstraëte. The quantitative bound is tight and also provides the optimal extremal number for cycles of length two modulo four.
