Adaptive loose optimization for robust question answering

Question answering methods are well-known for leveraging data bias, such as the language prior in visual question answering and the position bias in machine reading comprehension (extractive question answering). Current debiasing methods often come at the cost of significant in-distribution performance to achieve favorable out-of-distribution generalizability, while non-debiasing methods sacrifice a considerable amount of out-of-distribution performance in order to obtain high in-distribution performance. Therefore, it is challenging for them to deal with the complicated changing real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective novel loss function with adaptive loose optimization, which seeks to make the best of both worlds for question answering. Our main technical contribution is to reduce the loss adaptively according to the ratio between the previous and current optimization state on mini-batch training data. This loose optimization can be used to prevent non-debiasing methods from overlearning data bias while enabling debiasing methods to maintain slight bias learning. Experiments on the visual question answering datasets, including VQA v2, VQA-CP v1, VQA-CP v2, GQA-OOD, and the extractive question answering dataset SQuAD demonstrate that our approach enables QA methods to obtain state-of-the-art in- and out-of-distribution performance in most cases. Supersaturation beyond color-critical graphs

The supersaturation problem for a given graph $F$ asks for the minimum number $h_F(n,q)$ of copies of $F$ in an $n$-vertex graph with $ex(n,F)+q$ edges. Subsequent works by Rademacher, Erdős, and Lovász and Simonovits determine the optimal range of $q$ (which is linear in $n$) for cliques $F$ such that $h_F(n,q)$ equals the minimum number $t_F(n,q)$ of copies of $F$ obtained from a maximum $F$-free $n$-vertex graph by adding $q$ new edges. A breakthrough result of Mubayi extends this line of research from cliques to color-critical graphs $F$, and this was further strengthened by Pikhurko and Yilma who established the equality $h_F(n,q)=t_F(n,q)$ for $1\leq q\leq ε_F n$ and sufficiently large $n$. In this paper, we present several results on the supersaturation problem that extend beyond the existing framework. Firstly, we explicitly construct infinitely many graphs $F$ with restricted properties for which $h_F(n,q)<q\cdot t_F(n,1)$ holds when $n\gg q\geq 4$, thus refuting a conjecture of Mubayi. Secondly, we extend the result of Pikhurko-Yilma by showing the equality $h_F(n,q)=t_F(n,q)$ in the range $1\leq q\leq ε_F n$ for any member $F$ in a diverse and abundant graph family (which includes color-critical graphs, disjoint unions of cliques $K_r$, and the Petersen graph). Lastly, we prove the existence of a graph $F$ for any positive integer $s$ such that $h_F(n,q)=t_F(n,q)$ holds when $1\leq q\leq ε_F n^{1-1/s}$, and $h_F(n,q)<t_F(n,q)$ when $n^{1-1/s}/ε_F\leq q\leq ε_F n$, indicating that $q=Θ(n^{1-1/s})$ serves as the threshold for the equality $h_F(n,q)=t_F(n,q)$. We also discuss some additional remarks and related open problems.

Non-linear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of delafossite proximate quantum spin liquids

Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular lattice resonating valence bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$. We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe$_2$ heat capacity using high temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe$_2$ fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg $J_2/J_1$ to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$ shows that smaller $A$-site Na$^+$ ion has a larger $J_2/J_1$ ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe$_2$ increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases $J_2/J_1$. These results show how periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the $A$YbSe$_2$ materials in a controlled way.

Static and dynamical properties of the spin-5/2 nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba3MnSb2O9

We study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba3MnSb2O9, an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane 120o state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba3MnSb2O9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasi-classical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z2-vortex excitations.

Direct observation of topological surface states in the layered kagome lattice with broken time-reversal symmetry

Magnetic topological quantum materials display a diverse range of fascinating physical properties which arise from their intrinsic magnetism and the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. However, so far, few examples of intrinsic magnetic topological materials have been confirmed experimentally, which significantly hinder our comprehensive understanding of the abundant physical properties in this system. The kagome lattices, which host diversity of electronic structure signatures such as Dirac nodes, flat bands, and saddle points, provide an alternative and promising platform for in-depth investigations into correlations and band topology. In this article, drawing inspiration from the stacking configuration of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, we conceive and then synthesize a high-quality single crystal EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$, which is a unique natural heterostructure consisting of both topological kagome layers and magnetic interlayers. We investigate the electronic structure of EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$ and uncover distinct features of anisotropic multiple Van Hove singularitie (VHS) that might prevent Fermi surface nesting, leading to the absence of a charge density wave (CDW). In addition, we identify the topological nontrivial surface states that serve as connections between different saddle bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Combined with calculations, we establish that, the effective time-reversal symmetry S=$θ$$τ_{1/2}$ play a crucial role in the antiferromagnetic ground state of EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$, which ensures the stability of the topological surface states and gives rise to their intriguing topological nature. Therefore, EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$ offers the rare opportunity to investigate correlated topological states in magnetic kagome materials.

White-Box Adversarial Attacks on Deep Learning-Based Radio Frequency Fingerprint Identification

Radio frequency fingerprint identification (RFFI) is an emerging technique for the lightweight authentication of wireless Internet of things (IoT) devices. RFFI exploits unique hardware impairments as device identifiers, and deep learning is widely deployed as the feature extractor and classifier for RFFI. However, deep learning is vulnerable to adversarial attacks, where adversarial examples are generated by adding perturbation to clean data for causing the classifier to make wrong predictions. Deep learning-based RFFI has been shown to be vulnerable to such attacks, however, there is currently no exploration of effective adversarial attacks against a diversity of RFFI classifiers. In this paper, we report on investigations into white-box attacks (non-targeted and targeted) using two approaches, namely the fast gradient sign method (FGSM) and projected gradient descent (PGD). A LoRa testbed was built and real datasets were collected. These adversarial examples have been experimentally demonstrated to be effective against convolutional neural networks (CNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, and gated recurrent units (GRU).

Few-Shot Data-to-Text Generation via Unified Representation and Multi-Source Learning

We present a novel approach for structured data-to-text generation that addresses the limitations of existing methods that primarily focus on specific types of structured data. Our proposed method aims to improve performance in multi-task training, zero-shot and few-shot scenarios by providing a unified representation that can handle various forms of structured data such as tables, knowledge graph triples, and meaning representations. We demonstrate that our proposed approach can effectively adapt to new structured forms, and can improve performance in comparison to current methods. For example, our method resulted in a 66% improvement in zero-shot BLEU scores when transferring models trained on table inputs to a knowledge graph dataset. Our proposed method is an important step towards a more general data-to-text generation framework.

Spin dynamics of the $E_8$ particles

In this article, we report on inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a quasi-1D antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ under a transverse magnetic field applied along the (0,1,0) direction. Combining results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments, analytical analysis, and numerical simulations, we precisely studied the $E_8$ excitations appearing in the whole Brillouin zone at $B_c^{1D}\approx 4.7$ T. The energy scan at $Q=(0,0,2)$ reveals a match between the data and the theoretical prediction of energies of multiple $E_8$ excitations. Furthermore, dispersions of the lightest three $E_8$ particles have been clearly observed, confirming the existence of the $E_8$ particles in BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$. Our results lay down a concrete ground to systematically study the physics of the exotic $E_8$ particles.

XTQA: Span-Level Explanations of the Textbook Question Answering

Textbook Question Answering (TQA) is a task that one should answer a diagram/non-diagram question given a large multi-modal context consisting of abundant essays and diagrams. We argue that the explainability of this task should place students as a key aspect to be considered. To address this issue, we devise a novel architecture towards span-level eXplanations of the TQA (XTQA) based on our proposed coarse-to-fine grained algorithm, which can provide not only the answers but also the span-level evidences to choose them for students. This algorithm first coarsely chooses top $M$ paragraphs relevant to questions using the TF-IDF method, and then chooses top $K$ evidence spans finely from all candidate spans within these paragraphs by computing the information gain of each span to questions. Experimental results shows that XTQA significantly improves the state-of-the-art performance compared with baselines. The source code is available at https://github.com/keep-smile-001/opentqa

Phase Transitions of Structured Codes of Graphs

We consider the symmetric difference of two graphs on the same vertex set $[n]$, which is the graph on $[n]$ whose edge set consists of all edges that belong to exactly one of the two graphs. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a class of graphs, and let $M_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ denote the maximum possible cardinality of a family $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs on $[n]$ such that the symmetric difference of any two members in $\mathcal{G}$ belongs to $\mathcal{F}$. These concepts are recently investigated by Alon, Gujgiczer, Körner, Milojević, and Simonyi, with the aim of providing a new graphic approach to coding theory. In particular, $M_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ denotes the maximum possible size of this code. Existing results show that as the graph class $\mathcal{F}$ changes, $M_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ can vary from $n$ to $2^{(1+o(1))\binom{n}{2}}$. We study several phase transition problems related to $M_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ in general settings and present a partial solution to a recent problem posed by Alon et. al.

Discovery of the high-entropy carbide ceramic topological superconductor candidate (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2)C

High-entropy ceramics (HECs) are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with one or more Wyckoff sites shared by equal or near-equal atomic ratios of multi-principal elements. Material design and property tailoring possibilities emerge from this new class of materials. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity around 2.35 K and topological properties in the (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2)C high-entropy carbide ceramic (HECC), which has not been observed before in any of the investigated HECC. Density functional theory calculations showed that six type-II Dirac points exist in (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Hf0.2Ta0.2)C, which mainly contributed from the t2g orbitals of transition metals and the p orbitals of C. Due to the stability of the structure, we also observed robust superconductivity under pressure in this HEC superconductor. This study expands the physical properties of HECs, which may become a new material platform for superconductivity research, especially for studying the coupling between superconductivity and topological physics.

On Two problems of defective choosability

Given positive integers $p \ge k$, and a non-negative integer $d$, we say a graph $G$ is $(k,d,p)$-choosable if for every list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)|\geq k$ for each $v \in V(G)$ and $|\bigcup_{v\in V(G)}L(v)| \leq p$, there exists an $L$-coloring of $G$ such that each monochromatic subgraph has maximum degree at most $d$. In particular, $(k,0,k)$-choosable means $k$-colorable, $(k,0,+\infty)$-choosable means $k$-choosable and $(k,d,+\infty)$-choosable means $d$-defective $k$-choosable. This paper proves that there are 1-defective 3-choosable graphs that are not 4-choosable, and for any positive integers $\ell \geq k \geq 3$, and non-negative integer $d$, there are $(k,d, \ell)$-choosable graphs that are not $(k,d , \ell+1)$-choosable. These results answer questions asked by Wang and Xu [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 27, 4(2013), 2020-2037], and Kang [J. Graph Theory 73, 3(2013), 342-353], respectively. Our construction of $(k,d, \ell)$-choosable but not $(k,d , \ell+1)$-choosable graphs generalizes the construction of Král' and Sgall in [J. Graph Theory 49, 3(2005), 177-186] for the case $d=0$.

Quantitative polarimetry for the transition disk in RX J1604.3-213010

The bright disk of RX J1604 has a very simple axisymmetric structure and is well suited as a benchmark object for accurate photo-polarimetric measurements. We used archival data of RX J1604 from the ESO archive and carefully corrected the polarization signal for instrumental effects, also taking the interstellar polarization into account. We derive accurate radial disk profiles for the intrinsic polarized intensity, ${\hat{Q}}_φ(r)/I_{\star}$, and measure different profile peak radii for different bands because of the wavelength dependence of the dust opacity. The disk-integrated polarization is $\hat{Q}_φ/I_{\star} = 0.92 \pm 0.04\%$ for the R band and $1.51 \pm 0.11\%$ for the J band, indicating a red color for the polarized reflectivity of the disk. The intensity of the disk is $I_{\rm disk}/I_{\star} = 3.9 \pm 0.5 \%$ in the J band, and the fractional polarization is $\hat{p}_φ = 38 \pm 4\%$ for the J band and $42 \pm 2\%$ for the H band. The comparison with the IR excess for RX J1604 yields an apparent disk albedo of about $Λ_{I} \approx 0.16 \pm 0.08$. We also find that previously described shadows seen in the R band data are likely affected by calibration errors. Using dust scattering models for transition disks, We derive approximate J band values for the scattering albedo $ω\approx 0.5$, scattering asymmetry $g \approx 0.5$, and scattering polarization $p_{\rm max} \approx 0.7$ for the dust. The positive R to J band color for the polarized reflectivity is mainly a result of the wavelength dependence of dust parameters because the scattering geometry is expected to be very similar for different colors. This work demonstrates the potential of accurate photo-polarimetric measurements of the circumstellar disk RX J1604 for the determination of dust scattering parameters that strongly constrain the physical properties of the dust.

Partitioning graphs with linear minimum degree

We prove that there exists an absolute constant $C>0$ such that, for any positive integer $k$, every graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $Ck$ admits a vertex-partition $V(G)=S\cup T$, where both $G[S]$ and $G[T]$ have minimum degree at least $k$, and every vertex in $S$ has at least $k$ neighbors in $T$. This confirms a question posted by Kühn and Osthus and is tight up to a constant factor. Our proof combines probabilistic methods with structural arguments based on Ore's Theorem on $f$-factors of bipartite graphs.

Benchmarking Diverse-Modal Entity Linking with Generative Models

Entities can be expressed in diverse formats, such as texts, images, or column names and cell values in tables. While existing entity linking (EL) models work well on per modality configuration, such as text-only EL, visual grounding, or schema linking, it is more challenging to design a unified model for diverse modality configurations. To bring various modality configurations together, we constructed a benchmark for diverse-modal EL (DMEL) from existing EL datasets, covering all three modalities including text, image, and table. To approach the DMEL task, we proposed a generative diverse-modal model (GDMM) following a multimodal-encoder-decoder paradigm. Pre-training \Model with rich corpora builds a solid foundation for DMEL without storing the entire KB for inference. Fine-tuning GDMM builds a stronger DMEL baseline, outperforming state-of-the-art task-specific EL models by 8.51 F1 score on average. Additionally, extensive error analyses are conducted to highlight the challenges of DMEL, facilitating future research on this task.

Taxonomy Expansion for Named Entity Recognition

Training a Named Entity Recognition (NER) model often involves fixing a taxonomy of entity types. However, requirements evolve and we might need the NER model to recognize additional entity types. A simple approach is to re-annotate entire dataset with both existing and additional entity types and then train the model on the re-annotated dataset. However, this is an extremely laborious task. To remedy this, we propose a novel approach called Partial Label Model (PLM) that uses only partially annotated datasets. We experiment with 6 diverse datasets and show that PLM consistently performs better than most other approaches (0.5 - 2.5 F1), including in novel settings for taxonomy expansion not considered in prior work. The gap between PLM and all other approaches is especially large in settings where there is limited data available for the additional entity types (as much as 11 F1), thus suggesting a more cost effective approaches to taxonomy expansion.

Dual-Diffusion: Dual Conditional Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models for Blind Super-Resolution Reconstruction in RSIs

Previous super-resolution reconstruction (SR) works are always designed on the assumption that the degradation operation is fixed, such as bicubic downsampling. However, as for remote sensing images, some unexpected factors can cause the blurred visual performance, like weather factors, orbit altitude, etc. Blind SR methods are proposed to deal with various degradations. There are two main challenges of blind SR in RSIs: 1) the accu-rate estimation of degradation kernels; 2) the realistic image generation in the ill-posed problem. To rise to the challenge, we propose a novel blind SR framework based on dual conditional denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDSR). In our work, we introduce conditional denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPM) from two aspects: kernel estimation progress and re-construction progress, named as the dual-diffusion. As for kernel estimation progress, conditioned on low-resolution (LR) images, a new DDPM-based kernel predictor is constructed by studying the invertible mapping between the kernel distribution and the latent distribution. As for reconstruction progress, regarding the predicted degradation kernels and LR images as conditional information, we construct a DDPM-based reconstructor to learning the mapping from the LR images to HR images. Com-prehensive experiments show the priority of our proposal com-pared with SOTA blind SR methods. Source Code is available at https://github.com/Lincoln20030413/DDSR

Scribble-Supervised Target Extraction Method Based on Inner Structure-Constraint for Remote Sensing Images

Weakly supervised learning based on scribble annotations in target extraction of remote sensing images has drawn much interest due to scribbles' flexibility in denoting winding objects and low cost of manually labeling. However, scribbles are too sparse to identify object structure and detailed information, bringing great challenges in target localization and boundary description. To alleviate these problems, in this paper, we construct two inner structure-constraints, a deformation consistency loss and a trainable active contour loss, together with a scribble-constraint to supervise the optimization of the encoder-decoder network without introducing any auxiliary module or extra operation based on prior cues. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate our method's superiority over five state-of-the-art algorithms in this field. Source code is available at https://github.com/yitongli123/ISC-TE.
