FedDWA: Personalized Federated Learning with Dynamic Weight Adjustment

Different from conventional federated learning, personalized federated learning (PFL) is able to train a customized model for each individual client according to its unique requirement. The mainstream approach is to adopt a kind of weighted aggregation method to generate personalized models, in which weights are determined by the loss value or model parameters among different clients. However, such kinds of methods require clients to download others' models. It not only sheer increases communication traffic but also potentially infringes data privacy. In this paper, we propose a new PFL algorithm called \emph{FedDWA (Federated Learning with Dynamic Weight Adjustment)} to address the above problem, which leverages the parameter server (PS) to compute personalized aggregation weights based on collected models from clients. In this way, FedDWA can capture similarities between clients with much less communication overhead. More specifically, we formulate the PFL problem as an optimization problem by minimizing the distance between personalized models and guidance models, so as to customize aggregation weights for each client. Guidance models are obtained by the local one-step ahead adaptation on individual clients. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments using five real datasets and the results demonstrate that FedDWA can significantly reduce the communication traffic and achieve much higher model accuracy than the state-of-the-art approaches.

SimPer: Simple Self-Supervised Learning of Periodic Targets

From human physiology to environmental evolution, important processes in nature often exhibit meaningful and strong periodic or quasi-periodic changes. Due to their inherent label scarcity, learning useful representations for periodic tasks with limited or no supervision is of great benefit. Yet, existing self-supervised learning (SSL) methods overlook the intrinsic periodicity in data, and fail to learn representations that capture periodic or frequency attributes. In this paper, we present SimPer, a simple contrastive SSL regime for learning periodic information in data. To exploit the periodic inductive bias, SimPer introduces customized augmentations, feature similarity measures, and a generalized contrastive loss for learning efficient and robust periodic representations. Extensive experiments on common real-world tasks in human behavior analysis, environmental sensing, and healthcare domains verify the superior performance of SimPer compared to state-of-the-art SSL methods, highlighting its intriguing properties including better data efficiency, robustness to spurious correlations, and generalization to distribution shifts. Code and data are available at: https://github.com/YyzHarry/SimPer.

Direct Linearly-Polarised Electroluminescence from Perovskite Nanoplatelet Superlattices

Polarised light is critical for a wide range of applications, but is usually generated by filtering unpolarised light, which leads to significant energy losses and requires additional optics. Herein, the direct emission of linearly-polarised light is achieved from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) made of CsPbI3 perovskite nanoplatelet superlattices. Through use of solvents with different vapour pressures, the self-assembly of perovskite nanoplatelets is achieved to enable fine control over the orientation (either face-up or edge-up) and therefore the transition dipole moment. As a result of the highly-uniform alignment of the nanoplatelets, as well as their strong quantum and dielectric confinement, large exciton fine-structure splitting is achieved at the film level, leading to pure-red LEDs exhibiting a high degree of linear polarisation of 74.4% without any photonic structures. This work unveils the possibilities of perovskite nanoplatelets as a highly promising source of linearly-polarised electroluminescence, opening up the development of next-generation 3D displays and optical communications from this highly versatile, solution-processable system.

Detecting Building Changes with Off-Nadir Aerial Images

The tilted viewing nature of the off-nadir aerial images brings severe challenges to the building change detection (BCD) problem: the mismatch of the nearby buildings and the semantic ambiguity of the building facades. To tackle these challenges, we present a multi-task guided change detection network model, named as MTGCD-Net. The proposed model approaches the specific BCD problem by designing three auxiliary tasks, including: (1) a pixel-wise classification task to predict the roofs and facades of buildings; (2) an auxiliary task for learning the roof-to-footprint offsets of each building to account for the misalignment between building roof instances; and (3) an auxiliary task for learning the identical roof matching flow between bi-temporal aerial images to tackle the building roof mismatch problem. These auxiliary tasks provide indispensable and complementary building parsing and matching information. The predictions of the auxiliary tasks are finally fused to the main building change detection branch with a multi-modal distillation module. To train and test models for the BCD problem with off-nadir aerial images, we create a new benchmark dataset, named BANDON. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model achieves superior performance over the previous state-of-the-art competitors.

RASIPAM: Interactive Pattern Mining of Multivariate Event Sequences in Racket Sports

Experts in racket sports like tennis and badminton use tactical analysis to gain insight into competitors' playing styles. Many data-driven methods apply pattern mining to racket sports data -- which is often recorded as multivariate event sequences -- to uncover sports tactics. However, tactics obtained in this way are often inconsistent with those deduced by experts through their domain knowledge, which can be confusing to those experts. This work introduces RASIPAM, a RAcket-Sports Interactive PAttern Mining system, which allows experts to incorporate their knowledge into data mining algorithms to discover meaningful tactics interactively. RASIPAM consists of a constraint-based pattern mining algorithm that responds to the analysis demands of experts: Experts provide suggestions for finding tactics in intuitive written language, and these suggestions are translated into constraints to run the algorithm. RASIPAM further introduces a tailored visual interface that allows experts to compare the new tactics with the original ones and decide whether to apply a given adjustment. This interactive workflow iteratively progresses until experts are satisfied with all tactics. We conduct a quantitative experiment to show that our algorithm supports real-time interaction. Two case studies in tennis and in badminton respectively, each involving two domain experts, are conducted to show the effectiveness and usefulness of the system.

Rethinking the Detection Head Configuration for Traffic Object Detection

Multi-scale detection plays an important role in object detection models. However, researchers usually feel blank on how to reasonably configure detection heads combining multi-scale features at different input resolutions. We find that there are different matching relationships between the object distribution and the detection head at different input resolutions. Based on the instructive findings, we propose a lightweight traffic object detection network based on matching between detection head and object distribution, termed as MHD-Net. It consists of three main parts. The first is the detection head and object distribution matching strategy, which guides the rational configuration of detection head, so as to leverage multi-scale features to effectively detect objects at vastly different scales. The second is the cross-scale detection head configuration guideline, which instructs to replace multiple detection heads with only two detection heads possessing of rich feature representations to achieve an excellent balance between detection accuracy, model parameters, FLOPs and detection speed. The third is the receptive field enlargement method, which combines the dilated convolution module with shallow features of backbone to further improve the detection accuracy at the cost of increasing model parameters very slightly. The proposed model achieves more competitive performance than other models on BDD100K dataset and our proposed ETFOD-v2 dataset. The code will be available.

Mapping mechanism between density of states and ultraviolet-visible light absorption spectra

This paper constructs the mapping relation from density of states (DOS) to UV-vis spectra by using an ab initio perspective. Taking BiOIO3 semiconductor photocatalyst as an example, the experimental verification was also carried out. The optical response of the material considers the superposition benefits of all possible transitions. Directly using the difference between valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) will lead to an underestimate of the energy band gap. This paper provides a new idea of linking the density functional theory (DFT) data with experiment phenomenon.

VisImages: A Fine-Grained Expert-Annotated Visualization Dataset

Images in visualization publications contain rich information, e.g., novel visualization designs and implicit design patterns of visualizations. A systematic collection of these images can contribute to the community in many aspects, such as literature analysis and automated tasks for visualization. In this paper, we build and make public a dataset, VisImages, which collects 12,267 images with captions from 1,397 papers in IEEE InfoVis and VAST. Built upon a comprehensive visualization taxonomy, the dataset includes 35,096 visualizations and their bounding boxes in the images. We demonstrate the usefulness of VisImages through three use cases: 1) investigating the use of visualizations in the publications with VisImages Explorer, 2) training and benchmarking models for visualization classification, and 3) localizing visualizations in the visual analytics systems automatically.

Uncertainty Set Prediction of Aggregated Wind Power Generation based on Bayesian LSTM and Spatio-Temporal Analysis

Aggregated stochastic characteristics of geographically distributed wind generation will provide valuable information for secured and economical system operation in electricity markets. This paper focuses on the uncertainty set prediction of the aggregated generation of geographically distributed wind farms. A Spatio-temporal model is proposed to learn the dynamic features from partial observation in near-surface wind fields of neighboring wind farms. We use Bayesian LSTM, a probabilistic prediction model, to obtain the uncertainty set of the generation in individual wind farms. Then, spatial correlation between different wind farms is presented to correct the output results. Numerical testing results based on the actual data with 6 wind farms in northwest China show that the uncertainty set of aggregated wind generation of distributed wind farms is less volatile than that of a single wind farm.

Greenplum: A Hybrid Database for Transactional and Analytical Workloads

Demand for enterprise data warehouse solutions to support real-time Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) queries as well as long-running Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) workloads is growing. Greenplum database is traditionally known as an OLAP data warehouse system with limited ability to process OLTP workloads. In this paper, we augment Greenplum into a hybrid system to serve both OLTP and OLAP workloads. The challenge we address here is to achieve this goal while maintaining the ACID properties with minimal performance overhead. In this effort, we identify the engineering and performance bottlenecks such as the under-performing restrictive locking and the two-phase commit protocol. Next we solve the resource contention issues between transactional and analytical queries. We propose a global deadlock detector to increase the concurrency of query processing. When transactions that update data are guaranteed to reside on exactly one segment we introduce one-phase commit to speed up query processing. Our resource group model introduces the capability to separate OLAP and OLTP workloads into more suitable query processing mode. Our experimental evaluation on the TPC-B and CH-benCHmark benchmarks demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach in boosting the OLTP performance without sacrificing the OLAP performance.

EventAnchor: Reducing Human Interactions in Event Annotation of Racket Sports Videos

The popularity of racket sports (e.g., tennis and table tennis) leads to high demands for data analysis, such as notational analysis, on player performance. While sports videos offer many benefits for such analysis, retrieving accurate information from sports videos could be challenging. In this paper, we propose EventAnchor, a data analysis framework to facilitate interactive annotation of racket sports video with the support of computer vision algorithms. Our approach uses machine learning models in computer vision to help users acquire essential events from videos (e.g., serve, the ball bouncing on the court) and offers users a set of interactive tools for data annotation. An evaluation study on a table tennis annotation system built on this framework shows significant improvement of user performances in simple annotation tasks on objects of interest and complex annotation tasks requiring domain knowledge.

Robust Protection of III-V Nanowires in Water Splitting by a Thin Compact TiO$_2$ Layer

Narrow-bandgap III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) with a suitable band structure and strong light-trapping ability are ideal for high-efficiency low-cost solar water-splitting systems. However, due to their nanoscale dimension, they suffer more severe corrosion by the electrolyte solution than the thin-film counterparts. Thus, short-term durability is the major obstacle for using these NWs for practical water splitting applications. Here, we demonstrated for the first time that a thin layer (~7 nm thick) of compact TiO$_2$ deposited by atomic layer deposition can provide robust protection to III-V NWs. The protected GaAs NWs maintain 91.4% of its photoluminescence intensity after 14 months of storage in ambient atmosphere, which suggests the TiO$_2$ layer is pinhole-free. Working as a photocathode for water splitting, they exhibited a 45% larger photocurrent density compared with un-protected counterparts and a high Faraday efficiency of 91%, and can also maintain a record-long highly-stable performance among narrow-bandgap III-V NW photoelectrodes; after 67 hours photoelectrochemical stability test reaction in strong acid electrolyte solution (pH = 1), they show no apparent indication of corrosion, which is in stark contrast to the un-protected NWs that are fully failed after 35-hours. These findings provide an effective way to enhance both stability and performance of III-V NW based photoelectrodes, which are highly important for practical applications in solar-energy-based water splitting systems.

Data Based Linearization: Least-Squares Based Approximation

Linearization of power flow is an important topic in power system analysis. The computational burden can be greatly reduced under the linear power flow model while the model error is the main concern. Therefore, various linear power flow models have been proposed in literature and dedicated to seek the optimal approximation. Most linear power flow models are based on some kind of transformation/simplification/Taylor expansion of AC power flow equations and fail to be accurate under cold-start mode. It is surprising that data-based linearization methods have not yet been fully investigated. In this paper, the performance of a data-based least-squares approximation method is investigated. The resulted cold-start sensitive factors are named as least-squares distribution factors (LSDF). Compared with the traditional power transfer distribution factors (PTDF), it is found that the LSDF can work very well for systems with large load variation, and the average error of LSDF is only about 1% of the average error of PTDF. Comprehensive numerical testing is performed and the results show that LSDF has attractive performance in all studied cases and has great application potential in occasions requiring only cold-start linear power flow models.

When Do Drivers Concentrate? Attention-based Driver Behavior Modeling With Deep Reinforcement Learning

Driver distraction a significant risk to driving safety. Apart from spatial domain, research on temporal inattention is also necessary. This paper aims to figure out the pattern of drivers' temporal attention allocation. In this paper, we propose an actor-critic method - Attention-based Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic policy gradient (ATD3) algorithm to approximate a driver' s action according to observations and measure the driver' s attention allocation for consecutive time steps in car-following model. Considering reaction time, we construct the attention mechanism in the actor network to capture temporal dependencies of consecutive observations. In the critic network, we employ Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic policy gradient algorithm (TD3) to address overestimated value estimates persisting in the actor-critic algorithm. We conduct experiments on real-world vehicle trajectory datasets and show that the accuracy of our proposed approach outperforms seven baseline algorithms. Moreover, the results reveal that the attention of the drivers in smooth vehicles is uniformly distributed in previous observations while they keep their attention to recent observations when sudden decreases of relative speeds occur. This study is the first contribution to drivers' temporal attention and provides scientific support for safety measures in transportation systems from the perspective of data mining.

Characterizing Research Leadership on Geographical Weighted Collaboration Network

Research collaborations, especially long-distance and cross-border collaborations, have become increasingly prevalent worldwide. Recent studies highlighted the significant role of research leadership in collaborations. However, existing measures of the research leadership do not take into account the intensity of leadership in the co-authorship network. More importantly, the spatial features, which influence the collaboration patterns and research outcomes, have not been incorporated in measuring the research leadership. To fill the gap, we construct an institution-level weighted co-authorship network that has two types of weight on the edges: the intensity of collaborations and the spatial score (the geographic distance adjusted by the cross-border nature). Based on this network, we propose a novel metric, namely the spatial research leadership rank (SpatialLeaderRank), to identify the leading institutions while considering both the collaboration intensity and the spatial features. Harnessing a dataset of 323,146 journal publications in pharmaceutical sciences during 2010-2018, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the geographical distribution and dynamic patterns of research leadership flows at the institution level. The results demonstrate that the SpatialLeaderRank outperforms baseline metrics in predicting the scholarly impact of institutions. And the result remains robust in the field of Information Science & Library Science.

Assessment of GaPSb/Si tandem material association properties for photoelectrochemical cells

Here, the structural, electronic and optical properties of the GaP1-xSbx/Si tandem materials association are determined in view of its use for solar water splitting applications. The GaPSb crystalline layer is grown on Si by Molecular Beam Epitaxy with different Sb contents. The bandgap value and bandgap type of GaPSb alloy are determined on the whole Sb range, by combining experimental absorption measurements with tight binding (TB) theoretical calculations. The indirect (X-band) to direct (Γ-band) cross-over is found to occur at 30% Sb content. Especially, at a Sb content of 32%, the GaP1-xSbx alloy reaches the desired 1.7eV direct bandgap, enabling efficient sunlight absorption, that can be ideally combined with the Si 1.1 eV bandgap. Moreover, the band alignment of GaP1-xSbx alloys and Si with respect to water redox potential levels has been analyzed, which shows the GaPSb/Si association is an interesting combination both for the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions. These results open new routes for the development of III-V/Si low-cost high-efficiency photoelectrochemical cells.

Spatiotemporal Attention Networks for Wind Power Forecasting

Wind power is one of the most important renewable energy sources and accurate wind power forecasting is very significant for reliable and economic power system operation and control strategies. This paper proposes a novel framework with spatiotemporal attention networks (STAN) for wind power forecasting. This model captures spatial correlations among wind farms and temporal dependencies of wind power time series. First of all, we employ a multi-head self-attention mechanism to extract spatial correlations among wind farms. Then, temporal dependencies are captured by the Sequence-to-Sequence (Seq2Seq) model with a global attention mechanism. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves better performance than other baseline approaches. Our work provides useful insights to capture non-Euclidean spatial correlations.

High performance waveguide uni-travelling carrier photodiode grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy

The first waveguide coupled phosphide-based UTC photodiodes grown by Solid Source Molecular Beam Epitaxy (SSMBE) are reported in this paper. Metal Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) and Gas Source MBE (GSMBE) have long been the predominant growth techniques for the production of high quality InGaAsP materials. The use of SSMBE overcomes the major issue associated with the unintentional diffusion of zinc in MOVPE and gives the benefit of the superior control provided by MBE growth techniques without the costs and the risks of handling toxic gases of GSMBE. The UTC epitaxial structure contains a 300 nm n-InP collection layer and a 300 nm n++-InGaAsP waveguide layer. UTC-PDs integrated with Coplanar Waveguides (CPW) exhibit 3 dB bandwidth greater than 65 GHz and output RF power of 1.1 dBm at 100 GHz. We also demonstrate accurate prediction of the absolute level of power radiated by our antenna integrated UTCs, between 200 GHz and 260 GHz, using 3d full-wave modelling and taking the UTC-to-antenna impedance match into account. Further, we present the first optical 3d full-wave modelling of waveguide UTCs, which provides a detailed insight into the coupling between a lensed optical fibre and the UTC chip.
