Insight-HXMT, NICER and NuSTAR views to the newly discovered black hole X-ray binary Swift J151857.0--572147

The systematic properties are largely unknown for the black hole X-ray binary Swift J151857.0--572147 newly discovered in the 2024 outburst. The nature of a black hole can be completely defined by specifying the mass and dimensionless spin parameter. Therefore, accurate measurement of the two fundamental parameters is important for understanding the nature of black holes. The joint spectral fitting of a reflection component with simultaneous observations from Insight-HXMT, NICER and NuSTAR reveals for the first time a black hole dimensionless spin of $0.84^{+0.17}_{-0.26}$ and an inclination angle of $21.1^{+4.5}_{-3.6}$ degree for this system. Monitoring of the soft state by NICER results in disk flux and temperature following $F_{\rm disk} \propto T_{\rm in}^{3.83\pm 0.17}$. For the standard thin disk, $L_{\rm disk}\approx 4πR_{\rm in}^{2}σT_{\rm in}^{4}$, so the relationship between the flux and temperature of the disk we measured indicates that the inner radius of the disk is stable and the disk is in the Innermost Stable Circular Orbit. With an empirical relation built previously between the black hole outburst profile and the intrinsic power output, the source distance is estimated as $5.8\pm 2.5$ kpc according to the outburst profile and peak flux observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER. Finally, a black hole mass of $3.67\pm1.79-8.07\pm 4.20 M_\odot$ can be inferred from a joint diagnostic of the aforementioned parameters measured for this system. This system is also consistent with most black hole X-ray binaries with high spin and a mass in the range of 5--20 $M_\odot$

Back to business: SLX 1746--331 after 13 years of silence

The black hole candidate system SLX 1746--331 was back to business in 2023, after a long silence of roughly 13 years. An outburst was observed thoroughly by \textit{Insight}-HXMT and \textit{NICER}. The outburst is characterized by spectral dominance of the soft state, where the joint \textit{Insight}-HXMT and \textit{NICER} spectral analysis shows the temperature dependence of the disk flux follows $T_{\rm in}^{3.98}$, and thus suggests that the inner disk reaches to ISCO during almost the entire outburst. By assuming 0.3 $L_{\rm Edd}$ for the peak flux and an inclination angle of zero degrees, the lower limit of the compact object hosted in this system is estimated as 3.28$\pm 2.14 M_\odot$. We also look into the relation of the disk temperature and disk flux for a sample of black hole systems, and by taking the disk temperature derived in the outburst of SLX 1746--331, such a relation results in a mass estimation of $5.2 \pm 4.5M_\odot$. Finally, the spin of the compact object is constrained to larger than 0.8 with a spectral model of kerrbb.

NICER, NuSTAR and Insight-HXMT views to the newly discovered black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8--1613

Swift J1727.8--1613 is a black hole X-ray binary newly discovered in 2023. We perform spectral analysis with simultaneous Insight-HXMT, NICER and NuSTAR observations when the source was approaching to the hard intermediate state. Such a joint view reveals an additional hard component apart from the normally observed hard component with reflection in the spectrum, to be distinguished from the usual black hole X-ray binary systems. By including this extra component in the spectrum, we have measured a high spin of $0.98^{+0.02}_{-0.07}$ and an inclination of around $40^{+1.2}_{-0.8}$ degrees, which is consistent with NICER results reported before. However, we find that the additional spectral component can not be exclusively determined due to the model degeneracy. Accordingly, a possible jet/corona configuration is adjusted to account for the spectral fitting with different model trials. The extra component may originate either from a relativistic jet or a jet base/corona underneath a slow jet.

NICER, NuSTAR and Insight-HXMT views to black hole X-ray binary SLX 1746--331

We study the spectral and temporal properties of the black hole X-ray transient binary SLX 1746--331 during the 2023 outburst with NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT observations. Through the joint fitting of the spectra from NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT, the spin and inclination angles are measured for the first time as $0.85 \pm 0.03$ and $53\pm 0.5$\textdegree, respectively. Accordingly, the mass of the compact star is updated from the previous lower limit of 3.3$\pm 2.1 M_\odot$ to $5.5\pm 3.6 M_\odot$, which is consistent with $5.2 \pm 4.5M_\odot$ measured with an empirical mass-luminosity correlation of BH samples. With more NICER observations covering the later decay of the outburst, we confirm that the entire outburst was dominated by the disk emissions, and the thermal spectrum follows $F \propto T_{\rm in}^{3.974\pm 0.003}$, till a luminosity of over than two magnitudes lower than the maximum of the outburst.

Distributionally chaotic $C_0$-semigroups on complex sectors

We explore distributional chaos for $C_0$-semigroups of linear operators on Banach spaces whose index set is a sector in the complex plane. We establish the relationship between distributional sensitivity and distributional chaos by characterizing them in terms of distributionally (semi-)irregular vectors. Additionally, we provide conditions under which a $C_0$-semigroup admits a linear manifold of distributionally irregular vectors. Furthermore, we delve into the study of distributional chaos for the translation $C_0$-semigroup on weighted $L_p$-spaces with a complex sector as the index set. We obtain a sufficient condition for dense distributional chaos, expressed in terms of the weight. In particular, we construct an example of a translation $C_0$-semigroup with a complex sector index set that is Devaney chaotic but not distributionally chaotic.

Feature Averaging: An Implicit Bias of Gradient Descent Leading to Non-Robustness in Neural Networks

In this work, we investigate a particular implicit bias in gradient descent training, which we term "Feature Averaging," and argue that it is one of the principal factors contributing to the non-robustness of deep neural networks. We show that, even when multiple discriminative features are present in the input data, neural networks trained by gradient descent tend to rely on an average (or a certain combination) of these features for classification, rather than distinguishing and leveraging each feature individually. Specifically, we provide a detailed theoretical analysis of the training dynamics of two-layer ReLU networks on a binary classification task, where the data distribution consists of multiple clusters with mutually orthogonal centers. We rigorously prove that gradient descent biases the network towards feature averaging, where the weights of each hidden neuron represent an average of the cluster centers (each corresponding to a distinct feature), thereby making the network vulnerable to input perturbations aligned with the negative direction of the averaged features. On the positive side, we demonstrate that this vulnerability can be mitigated through more granular supervision. In particular, we prove that a two-layer ReLU network can achieve optimal robustness when trained to classify individual features rather than merely the original binary classes. Finally, we validate our theoretical findings with experiments on synthetic datasets, MNIST, and CIFAR-10, and confirm the prevalence of feature averaging and its impact on adversarial robustness. We hope these theoretical and empirical insights deepen the understanding of how gradient descent shapes feature learning and adversarial robustness, and how more detailed supervision can enhance robustness.

AoECR: AI-ization of Elderly Care Robot

Autonomous interaction is crucial for the effective use of elderly care robots. However, developing universal AI architectures is extremely challenging due to the diversity in robot configurations and a lack of dataset. We proposed a universal architecture for the AI-ization of elderly care robots, called AoECR. Specifically, based on a nursing bed, we developed a patient-nurse interaction dataset tailored for elderly care scenarios and fine-tuned a large language model to enable it to perform nursing manipulations. Additionally, the inference process included a self-check chain to ensure the security of control commands. An expert optimization process further enhanced the humanization and personalization of the interactive responses. The physical experiment demonstrated that the AoECR exhibited zero-shot generalization capabilities across diverse scenarios, understood patients' instructions, implemented secure control commands, and delivered humanized and personalized interactive responses. In general, our research provides a valuable dataset reference and AI-ization solutions for elderly care robots.

Insight-HXMT observations on thermonuclear X-ray bursts from 4U~1608--52 in 2022: the accretion rate dependent anisotropy of burst emission

Thermonuclear X-ray bursts occur on the surface of an accreting neutron star (NS), and their characteristics and interplay with the surrounding circumstance could be a clue to understand the nature of the NS and accretion process. For this purpose, Insight-HXMT has performed high cadence observations on the bright thermonuclear X-ray burster--4U~1608--52 during its outburst in July and August 2022; nine bursts were detected, including seven bursts with the photospheric radius expansion (PRE). Time-resolved spectroscopy of the bright PRE bursts reveals that an enhancement of accretion rate or the Comptonization of the burst emission by the corona could reduce the residuals when fitting their spectra with the conventional model--blackbody. The inferred energy increment rate of the burst photon gained from the corona is up to $\sim$40\%, even though the bursts have different peak fluxes and locate at different accretion rates. Moreover, the flux shortage of the rising PRE is observed in the bursts at a high mass accretion rate, but not for the burst with a faint persistent emission, which has been predicted theoretically but first observed in this work. If the flux shortage is due to the disk obscuration, i.e., the burst emission is anisotropic, the phenomenon above could indicate that the anisotropy of the burst emission is accretion rate dependent, which could also be evidence of the truncated disk in the low/hard state.

MMAD: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Multimodal Large Language Models in Industrial Anomaly Detection

In the field of industrial inspection, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have a high potential to renew the paradigms in practical applications due to their robust language capabilities and generalization abilities. However, despite their impressive problem-solving skills in many domains, MLLMs' ability in industrial anomaly detection has not been systematically studied. To bridge this gap, we present MMAD, the first-ever full-spectrum MLLMs benchmark in industrial Anomaly Detection. We defined seven key subtasks of MLLMs in industrial inspection and designed a novel pipeline to generate the MMAD dataset with 39,672 questions for 8,366 industrial images. With MMAD, we have conducted a comprehensive, quantitative evaluation of various state-of-the-art MLLMs. The commercial models performed the best, with the average accuracy of GPT-4o models reaching 74.9%. However, this result falls far short of industrial requirements. Our analysis reveals that current MLLMs still have significant room for improvement in answering questions related to industrial anomalies and defects. We further explore two training-free performance enhancement strategies to help models improve in industrial scenarios, highlighting their promising potential for future research.

Return of 4U~1730--22 after 49 years silence: the spectral properties of the 2021/2022 outbursts observed by NICER and Insight-HXMT and the soft-to-hard state transition caused by the propeller effect

After in quiescence for 49 years, 4U~1730--22 became active and had two outbursts in 2021 \& 2022, the onset and tail of the outbursts were observed by NICER, which give us a peerless opportunity to study the state transition and its underlying mechanism. In this work, we take both the NS surface and accretion disk emission as the seed photons of the Comptonization and derive their spectral evolution in a bolometric luminosity range of 1\%--15\%$L_{\rm Edd}$. In the high/soft state, the inferred inner disk radius and the NS radius are consistent well, which implies that the accretion disk is close to the NS surface. For the decay stage, we report a steep change of the accretion disk emission within one day, i.e., the soft-to-hard transition, which could be due to the propeller effect and the corresponding neutron star surface magnetic field is 1.8--2.2$\times10^{8}$ G. Moreover, the inner disk radius is truncated at the corotation radius, which is similar to the propeller effect detected from 4U~1608--52. The absence of the propeller effect in the hard-to-soft state transition implies that the transition between the magnetospheric accretion and the disk accretion is not the sole cause of the state transitions.

On-demand storing time-bin qubit states with optical quantum memory

Quantum memory, serving as a crucial device for storing and releasing quantum states, holds significant importance in long-distance quantum communications. Up to date, quantum memories have been realized in many different systems. However, most of them have complex structures and high costs. Besides, it is not easy to simultaneously achieve both high storage efficiency and fidelity. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a low-cost optical quantum memory with high efficiency and high fidelity, by utilizing a butterfly shaped cavity consisting of one polarization beam splitter, two reflecting mirrors and one pockels cell crystal. In order to quantify the quality of the quantum memory, we carry out tomography measurements on the time-bin qubits encoded with weak coherent states after storage for N rounds. The storage efficiency per round can reach up to 95.0\%, and the overall state fidelity can exceed 99.1\%. It thus seems very promising for practical implementation in quantum communication and networks.

Understanding Generalization in Transformers: Error Bounds and Training Dynamics Under Benign and Harmful Overfitting

Transformers serve as the foundational architecture for many successful large-scale models, demonstrating the ability to overfit the training data while maintaining strong generalization on unseen data, a phenomenon known as benign overfitting. However, research on how the training dynamics influence error bounds within the context of benign overfitting has been limited. This paper addresses this gap by developing a generalization theory for a two-layer transformer with labeled flip noise. Specifically, we present generalization error bounds for both benign and harmful overfitting under varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), where the training dynamics are categorized into three distinct stages, each with its corresponding error bounds. Additionally, we conduct extensive experiments to identify key factors that influence test errors in transformers. Our experimental results align closely with the theoretical predictions, validating our findings.

Reasoning-Enhanced Object-Centric Learning for Videos

Object-centric learning aims to break down complex visual scenes into more manageable object representations, enhancing the understanding and reasoning abilities of machine learning systems toward the physical world. Recently, slot-based video models have demonstrated remarkable proficiency in segmenting and tracking objects, but they overlook the importance of the effective reasoning module. In the real world, reasoning and predictive abilities play a crucial role in human perception and object tracking; in particular, these abilities are closely related to human intuitive physics. Inspired by this, we designed a novel reasoning module called the Slot-based Time-Space Transformer with Memory buffer (STATM) to enhance the model's perception ability in complex scenes. The memory buffer primarily serves as storage for slot information from upstream modules, the Slot-based Time-Space Transformer makes predictions through slot-based spatiotemporal attention computations and fusion. Our experimental results on various datasets indicate that the STATM module can significantly enhance the capabilities of multiple state-of-the-art object-centric learning models for video. Moreover, as a predictive model, the STATM module also performs well in downstream prediction and Visual Question Answering (VQA) tasks. We will release our codes and data at https://github.com/intell-sci-comput/STATM.

Finding Quasars Behind the Galactic Plane: Spectroscopic Identifications of ~1300 New Quasars at |b|<=20 degree from LAMOST DR10

Quasars behind the Galactic plane (GPQs) are excellent tracers to probe the chemistry and kinematics of the interstellar/intergalactic medium (ISM/IGM) of the Milky Way along sight lines via absorption line spectroscopy. Moreover, the quasars located at low Galactic latitudes will fill the gap in the spatial distribution of known quasars near the Galactic plane, and can be used to construct an astrometric reference frame for accurate measurements of proper motions (PMs) of stars, and substructures of the Milky Way. We started a survey of background quasars in the low Galactic latitude region since the LAMOST phase II survey in 2017. Quasar candidates have been selected from the optical and infrared photometric data of Pan-STARRS1 and WISE surveys based on their variability and color properties. In this paper, we present a sample of 1982 spectroscopically confirmed GPQs with |b| <= 20 degree based on LAMOST Data Release 10 (DR10). Among them, 1338 are newly discovered. Most GPQs are located around 240<l<90 degree, and the spatial distributions are non-uniform. These GPQs have a magnitude distribution with a peak at i-mag 19.0, and mostly around 18.0-19.5mag. The peak of redshift distributions is around ~1.5, and most GPQs have redshifts between 0.3 and 2.5. Our finding demonstrates the potential discovery space for the GPQs from the spectroscopic surveys and the promising applications for future research.

Dynamic Frequency-Adaptive Knowledge Distillation for Speech Enhancement

Deep learning-based speech enhancement (SE) models have recently outperformed traditional techniques, yet their deployment on resource-constrained devices remains challenging due to high computational and memory demands. This paper introduces a novel dynamic frequency-adaptive knowledge distillation (DFKD) approach to effectively compress SE models. Our method dynamically assesses the model's output, distinguishing between high and low-frequency components, and adapts the learning objectives to meet the unique requirements of different frequency bands, capitalizing on the SE task's inherent characteristics. To evaluate the DFKD's efficacy, we conducted experiments on three state-of-the-art models: DCCRN, ConTasNet, and DPTNet. The results demonstrate that our method not only significantly enhances the performance of the compressed model (student model) but also surpasses other logit-based knowledge distillation methods specifically for SE tasks.

FactorGCL: A Hypergraph-Based Factor Model with Temporal Residual Contrastive Learning for Stock Returns Prediction

As a fundamental method in economics and finance, the factor model has been extensively utilized in quantitative investment. In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift from traditional linear models with expert-designed factors to more flexible nonlinear machine learning-based models with data-driven factors, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of these factor models. However, due to the low signal-to-noise ratio in market data, mining effective factors in data-driven models remains challenging. In this work, we propose a hypergraph-based factor model with temporal residual contrastive learning (FactorGCL) that employs a hypergraph structure to better capture high-order nonlinear relationships among stock returns and factors. To mine hidden factors that supplement human-designed prior factors for predicting stock returns, we design a cascading residual hypergraph architecture, in which the hidden factors are extracted from the residual information after removing the influence of prior factors. Additionally, we propose a temporal residual contrastive learning method to guide the extraction of effective and comprehensive hidden factors by contrasting stock-specific residual information over different time periods. Our extensive experiments on real stock market data demonstrate that FactorGCL not only outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods but also mines effective hidden factors for predicting stock returns.

Dense uniform Li-Yorke chaos for linear operators on a Banach space

This paper focuses on the dense uniform Li-Yorke chaos for linear operators on a Banach space. Some sufficient conditions and equivalent conditions are established under which the dynamical system is densely uniformly Li-Yorke chaotic. It is shown that there are plenty of densely uniformly Li-Yorke chaotic operators. For unilateral backward weighted shifts and bilateral backward weighted shifts on $\ell^p$, it is shown that Li-Yorke chaos is equivalent to dense uniform Li-Yorke chaos.

Decentralized Federated Learning with Model Caching on Mobile Agents

Federated Learning (FL) trains a shared model using data and computation power on distributed agents coordinated by a central server. Decentralized FL (DFL) utilizes local model exchange and aggregation between agents to reduce the communication and computation overheads on the central server. However, when agents are mobile, the communication opportunity between agents can be sporadic, largely hindering the convergence and accuracy of DFL. In this paper, we propose Cached Decentralized Federated Learning (Cached-DFL) to investigate delay-tolerant model spreading and aggregation enabled by model caching on mobile agents. Each agent stores not only its own model, but also models of agents encountered in the recent past. When two agents meet, they exchange their own models as well as the cached models. Local model aggregation utilizes all models stored in the cache. We theoretically analyze the convergence of Cached-DFL, explicitly taking into account the model staleness introduced by caching. We design and compare different model caching algorithms for different DFL and mobility scenarios. We conduct detailed case studies in a vehicular network to systematically investigate the interplay between agent mobility, cache staleness, and model convergence. In our experiments, Cached-DFL converges quickly, and significantly outperforms DFL without caching.
