Provably Efficient Exploration in Inverse Constrained Reinforcement Learning

Optimizing objective functions subject to constraints is fundamental in many real-world applications. However, these constraints are often not readily defined and must be inferred from expert agent behaviors, a problem known as Inverse Constraint Inference. Inverse Constrained Reinforcement Learning (ICRL) is a common solver for recovering feasible constraints in complex environments, relying on training samples collected from interactive environments. However, the efficacy and efficiency of current sampling strategies remain unclear. We propose a strategic exploration framework for sampling with guaranteed efficiency to bridge this gap. By defining the feasible cost set for ICRL problems, we analyze how estimation errors in transition dynamics and the expert policy influence the feasibility of inferred constraints. Based on this analysis, we introduce two exploratory algorithms to achieve efficient constraint inference via 1) dynamically reducing the bounded aggregate error of cost estimations or 2) strategically constraining the exploration policy around plausibly optimal ones. Both algorithms are theoretically grounded with tractable sample complexity, and their performance is validated empirically across various environments.

The coexistence of possible magnetic and chiral rotation in $^{129}\mathrm{Cs}$ and $^{131}\mathrm{La}$: a microscopic investigation

A microscopic investigation of the rotational properties in $^{129}\mathrm{Cs}$ and $^{131}\mathrm{La}$ was carried out using the three-dimensional tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory (3DTAC-CDFT). The calculations reveal the coexistence of magnetic and chiral rotation built on identical qusiparticle configurations $π{h}_{11/2}^{1}\otimes ν{h}_{11/2}^{-2}$ in $^{129}\mathrm{Cs}$ and $^{131}\mathrm{La}$, establishing a new type of shape coexistence. The calculations predict the deformation parameters for magnetic rotation in $^{129}\mathrm{Cs}$ ($β\approx0.23$, $γ\approx41^\circ$) and $^{131}\mathrm{La}$ ($β\approx0.25,$ $γ\approx42^\circ$), along with those for possible chiral rotation in $^{129}\mathrm{Cs}$ ($β\approx0.20,$ $γ\approx29^\circ$) and in $^{131}\mathrm{La}$ ($β\approx0.20,$ $γ\approx27^\circ$). The energy spectra, the relation between the spin and the rotational frequency, and the reduced $M1$ and $E2$ transition probabilities are obtained with the various configurations. The experimental characteristics of band B8 in $^{129}\mathrm{Cs}$ and band 13 in $^{131}\mathrm{La}$ are well reproduced. Moreover, a distinctive rotational mode transition is uncovered in this work, progressing from the principal-axis rotation to the planar rotation and finally to the chiral rotation, as the rotational frequency evolves through different regimes.

Generative Discovery of Partial Differential Equations by Learning from Math Handbooks

Data driven discovery of partial differential equations (PDEs) is a promising approach for uncovering the underlying laws governing complex systems. However, purely data driven techniques face the dilemma of balancing search space with optimization efficiency. This study introduces a knowledge guided approach that incorporates existing PDEs documented in a mathematical handbook to facilitate the discovery process. These PDEs are encoded as sentence like structures composed of operators and basic terms, and used to train a generative model, called EqGPT, which enables the generation of free form PDEs. A loop of generation evaluation optimization is constructed to autonomously identify the most suitable PDE. Experimental results demonstrate that this framework can recover a variety of PDE forms with high accuracy and computational efficiency, particularly in cases involving complex temporal derivatives or intricate spatial terms, which are often beyond the reach of conventional methods. The approach also exhibits generalizability to irregular spatial domains and higher dimensional settings. Notably, it succeeds in discovering a previously unreported PDE governing strongly nonlinear surface gravity waves propagating toward breaking, based on real world experimental data, highlighting its applicability to practical scenarios and its potential to support scientific discovery.

New Results on a General Class of Minimum Norm Optimization Problems

We study the general norm optimization for combinatorial problems, initiated by Chakrabarty and Swamy (STOC 2019). We propose a general formulation that captures a large class of combinatorial structures: we are given a set $U$ of $n$ weighted elements and a family of feasible subsets $F$. Each subset $S\in F$ is called a feasible solution/set of the problem. We denote the value vector by $v=\{v_i\}_{i\in [n]}$, where $v_i\geq 0$ is the value of element $i$. For any subset $S\subseteq U$, we use $v[S]$ to denote the $n$-dimensional vector $\{v_e\cdot \mathbf{1}[e\in S]\}_{e\in U}$. Let $f: \mathbb{R}^n\rightarrow\mathbb{R}_+$ be a symmetric monotone norm function. Our goal is to minimize the norm objective $f(v[S])$ over feasible subset $S\in F$. We present a general equivalent reduction of the norm minimization problem to a multi-criteria optimization problem with logarithmic budget constraints, up to a constant approximation factor. Leveraging this reduction, we obtain constant factor approximation algorithms for the norm minimization versions of several covering problems, such as interval cover, multi-dimensional knapsack cover, and logarithmic factor approximation for set cover. We also study the norm minimization versions for perfect matching, $s$-$t$ path and $s$-$t$ cut. We show the natural linear programming relaxations for these problems have a large integrality gap. To complement the negative result, we show that, for perfect matching, there is a bi-criteria result: for any constant $ε,δ>0$, we can find in polynomial time a nearly perfect matching (i.e., a matching that matches at least $1-ε$ proportion of vertices) and its cost is at most $(8+δ)$ times of the optimum for perfect matching. Moreover, we establish the existence of a polynomial-time $O(\log\log n)$-approximation algorithm for the norm minimization variant of the $s$-$t$ path problem.

Efficient hybrid variational quantum algorithm for solving graph coloring problem

In the era of Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) computing, available quantum resources are limited. Many NP-hard problems can be efficiently addressed using hybrid classical and quantum computational methods. This paper proposes a hybrid variational quantum algorithm designed to solve the $k$-coloring problem of graph vertices. The hybrid classical and quantum algorithms primarily partition the graph into multiple subgraphs through hierarchical techniques. The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) is employed to determine the coloring within the subgraphs, while a classical greedy algorithm is utilized to find the coloring of the interaction graph. Fixed coloring is applied to the interaction graph, and feedback is provided to correct any conflicting colorings within the subgraphs. The merging process into the original graph is iteratively optimized to resolve any arising conflicts. We employ a hierarchical framework that integrates feedback correction and conflict resolution to achieve $k$-coloring of arbitrary graph vertices. Through experimental analysis, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm, highlighting the rapid convergence of conflict evolution and the fact that iterative optimization allows the classical algorithm to approximate the number of colorings. Finally, we apply the proposed algorithm to optimize the scheduling of a subway transportation network, demonstrating a high degree of fairness.

A Machine Learning Approach for Denoising and Upsampling HRTFs

The demand for realistic virtual immersive audio continues to grow, with Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) playing a key role. HRTFs capture how sound reaches our ears, reflecting unique anatomical features and enhancing spatial perception. It has been shown that personalized HRTFs improve localization accuracy, but their measurement remains time-consuming and requires a noise-free environment. Although machine learning has been shown to reduce the required measurement points and, thus, the measurement time, a controlled environment is still necessary. This paper proposes a method to address this constraint by presenting a novel technique that can upsample sparse, noisy HRTF measurements. The proposed approach combines an HRTF Denoisy U-Net for denoising and an Autoencoding Generative Adversarial Network (AE-GAN) for upsampling from three measurement points. The proposed method achieves a log-spectral distortion (LSD) error of 5.41 dB and a cosine similarity loss of 0.0070, demonstrating the method's effectiveness in HRTF upsampling.

Fermi-LAT and FAST observation of the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057

Using 15 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), we performed a comprehensive analysis on the gamma-ray binary HESS J0632+057. Its spectrum in 0.1-300 GeV band is well described by a power law model with an index of $2.40\pm0.16$, leading to an energy flux of (5.5$\pm$1.6$)\times$ 10$^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The GeV Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of HESS J0632+057 hints for a spectral turn-over between $\sim$10-100 GeV. Orbital analysis reveals a flux enhancement during the phase range of 0.2-0.4, consistent with the X-ray and TeV light curves, indicating an origin of a common particle population. We carried out six deep radio observations on HESS J0632+057 with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), evenly distributed across its orbit, reaching a detection sensitivity of 2$μ$Jy. However, no radio pulsation was detected within these observations. The absence of radio pulsation may be attributed to the dense stellar wind environment of HESS J0632+057.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Decentralized Reservoir Management via Murmuration Intelligence

Conventional centralized water management systems face critical limitations from computational complexity and uncertainty propagation. We present MurmuRL, a novel decentralized framework inspired by starling murmurations intelligence, integrating bio-inspired alignment, separation, and cohesion rules with multi-agent reinforcement learning. MurmuRL enables individual reservoirs to make autonomous local decisions while achieving emergent global coordination. Experiments on grid networks demonstrate that MurmuRL achieves 8.8% higher final performance while using 27% less computing overhead compared to centralized approaches. Notably, strategic diversity scales super-linearly with system size, exhibiting sophisticated coordination patterns and enhanced resilience during extreme events. MurmuRL offers a scalable solution for managing complex water systems by leveraging principles of natural collective behavior.

The electronic structure of intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 quantum wires

The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic nanostructure are crucial for fundamental spintronics devices, motivated by its potential application in spintronics, we theoretically investigate the electronic structure of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of the cylindrical intrinsically magnetic topological insulator $\mathrm{MnBi_{2}Te_{4}}$ quantum wires for both cases. We demonstrate that a few surface states exist between the bulk band gap in the ferromagnetic phase, with only one spin branch. In the antiferromagnetic phase, we show that three coexistent states exist between the energy gaps of the quantum wires.

Spider: Any-to-Many Multimodal LLM

Multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) have emerged as an extension of Large Language Models (LLMs), enabling the integration of various modalities. However, Any-to-Any MLLMs are limited to generating pairwise modalities 'Text + X' within a single response, such as Text + {Image or Audio or Video}. To address this limitation, we introduce Spider, a novel efficient Any-to-Many Modalities Generation (AMMG) framework, which can generate an arbitrary combination of modalities 'Text + Xs', such as Text + {Image and Audio and Video}. To achieve efficient AMMG, our Spider integrates three core components: a Base Model for basic X-to-X (i.e., Any-to-Any) modality processing, an Any-to-Many Instruction Template designed for producing Xs signal prompts, and a novel Efficient Decoders-Controller for controlling multimodal Decoders to generate Xs (many-modal) contents. To train Spider, we constructed a novel Text-formatted Many-Modal (TMM) dataset, which facilitates learning the X-to-Xs (i.e., Any-to-Many) capability necessary for AMMG. Ultimately, the well-trained Spider generates a pseudo X-to-Xs dataset, the first-ever X-to-Xs many-modal dataset, enhancing the potential for AMMG tasks in future research. Overall, this work not only pushes the boundary of multimodal interaction but also provides rich data support for advancing the field. Code: https://github.com/Layjins/Spider

BoxSeg: Quality-Aware and Peer-Assisted Learning for Box-supervised Instance Segmentation

Box-supervised instance segmentation methods aim to achieve instance segmentation with only box annotations. Recent methods have demonstrated the effectiveness of acquiring high-quality pseudo masks under the teacher-student framework. Building upon this foundation, we propose a BoxSeg framework involving two novel and general modules named the Quality-Aware Module (QAM) and the Peer-assisted Copy-paste (PC). The QAM obtains high-quality pseudo masks and better measures the mask quality to help reduce the effect of noisy masks, by leveraging the quality-aware multi-mask complementation mechanism. The PC imitates Peer-Assisted Learning to further improve the quality of the low-quality masks with the guidance of the obtained high-quality pseudo masks. Theoretical and experimental analyses demonstrate the proposed QAM and PC are effective. Extensive experimental results show the superiority of our BoxSeg over the state-of-the-art methods, and illustrate the QAM and PC can be applied to improve other models.

Upper limits on the gamma-ray emission from the microquasar V4641 Sgr

Following a recent detection of TeV radiation by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC), coincident with the direction of the microquasar V4641 Sgr, we search for possible GeV emission from this source. We explored the morphology and temporal features of the source as well as two nearby unassociated point sources which could be a part of extended structure of V4641 Sgr, and compared results with corresponding X-ray and TeV emissions. The 95% confidence level upper limits for the flux from the source, assuming both point and extended source models were 5.38$\times$ 10$^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and 1.12$\times$ 10$^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, respectively. Additionally, no correlation between gamma-ray light curve and X-ray outbursts was observed.

Unveiling the Ignorance of MLLMs: Seeing Clearly, Answering Incorrectly

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have displayed remarkable performance in multi-modal tasks, particularly in visual comprehension. However, we reveal that MLLMs often generate incorrect answers even when they understand the visual content. To this end, we manually construct a benchmark with 12 categories and design evaluation metrics that assess the degree of error in MLLM responses even when the visual content is seemingly understood. Based on this benchmark, we test 15 leading MLLMs and analyze the distribution of attention maps and logits of some MLLMs. Our investigation identifies two primary issues: 1) most instruction tuning datasets predominantly feature questions that 'directly' relate to the visual content, leading to a bias in MLLMs' responses to other indirect questions, and 2) MLLMs' attention to visual tokens is notably lower than to system and question tokens. We further observe that attention scores between questions and visual tokens as well as the model's confidence in the answers are lower in response to misleading questions than to straightforward ones. To address the first challenge, we introduce a paired positive and negative data construction pipeline to diversify the dataset. For the second challenge, we propose to enhance the model's focus on visual content during decoding by refining the text and visual prompt. For the text prompt, we propose a content guided refinement strategy that performs preliminary visual content analysis to generate structured information before answering the question. Additionally, we employ a visual attention refinement strategy that highlights question-relevant visual tokens to increase the model's attention to visual content that aligns with the question. Extensive experiments demonstrate that these challenges can be significantly mitigated with our proposed dataset and techniques.

From Zero to Detail: Deconstructing Ultra-High-Definition Image Restoration from Progressive Spectral Perspective

Ultra-high-definition (UHD) image restoration faces significant challenges due to its high resolution, complex content, and intricate details. To cope with these challenges, we analyze the restoration process in depth through a progressive spectral perspective, and deconstruct the complex UHD restoration problem into three progressive stages: zero-frequency enhancement, low-frequency restoration, and high-frequency refinement. Building on this insight, we propose a novel framework, ERR, which comprises three collaborative sub-networks: the zero-frequency enhancer (ZFE), the low-frequency restorer (LFR), and the high-frequency refiner (HFR). Specifically, the ZFE integrates global priors to learn global mapping, while the LFR restores low-frequency information, emphasizing reconstruction of coarse-grained content. Finally, the HFR employs our designed frequency-windowed kolmogorov-arnold networks (FW-KAN) to refine textures and details, producing high-quality image restoration. Our approach significantly outperforms previous UHD methods across various tasks, with extensive ablation studies validating the effectiveness of each component. The code is available at \href{https://github.com/NJU-PCALab/ERR}{here}.

Hybrid Implementation for Untrusted-node-based Quantum Key Distribution Network

Quantum key distribution (QKD) serves as a cornerstone of secure quantum communication, providing unconditional security grounded in quantum mechanics. While trusted-node networks have facilitated early QKD deployment, their vulnerability to node compromise underscores the need for untrusted-node architectures. Measurement-device-independent QKD (MDI-QKD) and twin-field QKD (TF-QKD) have emerged as leading candidates, addressing security vulnerabilities and extending transmission distances. Despite the wide adoptions in various fiber scaling, no integrated implementation of these two protocols has been demonstrated to date. Here, we present a hybrid system that seamlessly integrates TF-QKD and MDI-QKD into one untrusted-node-based architecture. Utilizing an efficient phase estimation method based on asymmetric interferometers, we convert twin-field global phase tracking to relative phase calibration, allowing near continuous running of both protocols. Experiments demonstrate secure finite-size key rates for sending-or-not-sending QKD and MDI-QKD over fiber distances of 150 to 431 km. The results align with theoretical simulations and show the ability to surpass the absolute repeaterless key capacity. Our work offers an unified framework for deploying multi-protocol QKD networks, laying the foundation for adaptable and scalable quantum infrastructures that can meet a wide range of security and performance needs.

The peculiar disk evolution of 4U 1630--472 observed by Insight-HXMT during the 2022 and 2023 outbursts

We study the spectral properties of the black hole X-ray transient binary 4U 1630--472 during the 2022 and 2023 outbursts with Insight-HXMT observations. We find that the outbursts are in peculiar soft states. The effect of the hardening factor on the disk temperature is taken into account by kerrbb, and the flux and temperature of the disk are found to follow $F \propto T_{\rm eff}^{3.92\pm 0.13}$ and $F \propto T_{\rm eff}^{4.91\pm 1.00}$, for the two outbursts respectively. The flux-temperature relation is roughly consistent with holding a standard disk, By fitting with the p-free model, the p-value is found to have anti-correlation with disk temperature. Combined a joint diagnostic in a diagram of the relation between the non-thermal fraction and luminosity, by enclosing as well the previous outbursts, reveals a possible pattern for the disk evolution toward a slim one, and such an evolution may depend on the fraction of the non-thermal emission in the high soft state.

Insight-HXMT, NICER and NuSTAR views to the newly discovered black hole X-ray binary Swift J151857.0--572147

The systematic properties are largely unknown for the black hole X-ray binary Swift J151857.0--572147 newly discovered in the 2024 outburst. The nature of a black hole can be completely defined by specifying the mass and dimensionless spin parameter. Therefore, accurate measurement of the two fundamental parameters is important for understanding the nature of black holes. The joint spectral fitting of a reflection component with simultaneous observations from Insight-HXMT, NICER and NuSTAR reveals for the first time a black hole dimensionless spin of $0.84^{+0.17}_{-0.26}$ and an inclination angle of $21.1^{+4.5}_{-3.6}$ degree for this system. Monitoring of the soft state by NICER results in disk flux and temperature following $F_{\rm disk} \propto T_{\rm in}^{3.83\pm 0.17}$. For the standard thin disk, $L_{\rm disk}\approx 4πR_{\rm in}^{2}σT_{\rm in}^{4}$, so the relationship between the flux and temperature of the disk we measured indicates that the inner radius of the disk is stable and the disk is in the Innermost Stable Circular Orbit. With an empirical relation built previously between the black hole outburst profile and the intrinsic power output, the source distance is estimated as $5.8\pm 2.5$ kpc according to the outburst profile and peak flux observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER. Finally, a black hole mass of $3.67\pm1.79-8.07\pm 4.20 M_\odot$ can be inferred from a joint diagnostic of the aforementioned parameters measured for this system. This system is also consistent with most black hole X-ray binaries with high spin and a mass in the range of 5--20 $M_\odot$
