Super Fermi polaron and Nagaoka ferromagnetism in a two-dimesnional square lattice

We consider the Fermi polaron problem of an impurity hopping around a two-dimensional square lattice and interacting with a sea of fermions at given filling factor. When the interaction is attractive, we find standard Fermi polaron quasiparticles, categorized as attractive polarons and repulsive polarons. When the interaction becomes repulsive, interestingly, we observe an unconventional highly-excited polaron quasiparticle, sharply peaked at the corner of the first Brillouin zone with momentum \mathbf{k}=(\pmπ,\pmπ). This super Fermi polaron branch arises from the dressing of the impurity's motion with holes, instead of particles of fermions. We show that super Fermi polarons become increasingly well-defined with increasing impurity-fermion repulsions and might be considered as a precursor of Nagaoka ferromagnetism, which would appear at sufficiently large repulsions and at large filling factors. We also investigate the temperature-dependence of super Fermi polarons and find that they are thermally robust against the significant increase in temperature.

Thermally stable p-wave repulsive Fermi polaron without a two-body bound state

We theoretically investigate the polaron physics of an impurity immersed in a two-dimensional Fermi sea, interacting via a p-wave interaction at finite temperature. In the unitary limit with a divergent scattering area, we find a well-defined repulsive Fermi polaron at short interaction range, which shows a remarkable thermal stability with increasing temperature. The appearance of such a stable repulsive Fermi polaron in the resonantly interacting limit can be attributed to the existence of a quasi-bound dressed molecule state hidden in the two-particle continuum, although there is no bound state in the two-particle limit. We show that the repulsive Fermi polaron disappears when the interaction range increases or when the scattering area is tuned to the weakly-interacting regime. The large interaction range and small scattering area instead stabilize attractive Fermi polarons.

Beam test of a 180 nm CMOS Pixel Sensor for the CEPC vertex detector

The proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) imposes new challenges for the vertex detector in terms of pixel size and material budget. A Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) prototype called TaichuPix, based on a column drain readout architecture, has been developed to address the need for high spatial resolution. In order to evaluate the performance of the TaichuPix-3 chips, a beam test was carried out at DESY II TB21 in December 2022. Meanwhile, the Data Acquisition (DAQ) for a muti-plane configuration was tested during the beam test. This work presents the characterization of the TaichuPix-3 chips with two different processes, including cluster size, spatial resolution, and detection efficiency. The analysis results indicate the spatial resolution better than 5 $μm$ and the detection efficiency exceeds 99.5 % for both TaichuPix-3 chips with the two different processes.

Discrete Time Crystals with Absolute Stability

We show that interacting bosons on a ring which are driven periodically by a rotating potential can support discrete time crystals whose absolute stability can be proven. The absolute stability is demonstrated by an exact mapping of discrete time crystal states to low-lying eigenstates of a time-independent model that reveals spontaneous breaking of space translation symmetry. The mapping ensures that there are no residual time-dependent terms that could lead to heating of the system and destruction of discrete time crystals. We also analyze periodically kicked bosons where the mapping is approximate only and cannot guarantee the absolute stability of discrete time crystals. Besides illustrating potential sources of instability, the kicked bosons model demonstrates a rich field for investigating the interplay between different time and space symmetry breaking, as well as the stability of time crystal behavior in contact with a thermal reservoir.

Dynamic Fair Federated Learning Based on Reinforcement Learning

Federated learning enables a collaborative training and optimization of global models among a group of devices without sharing local data samples. However, the heterogeneity of data in federated learning can lead to unfair representation of the global model across different devices. To address the fairness issue in federated learning, we propose a dynamic q fairness federated learning algorithm with reinforcement learning, called DQFFL. DQFFL aims to mitigate the discrepancies in device aggregation and enhance the fairness of treatment for all groups involved in federated learning. To quantify fairness, DQFFL leverages the performance of the global federated model on each device and incorporates α-fairness to transform the preservation of fairness during federated aggregation into the distribution of client weights in the aggregation process. Considering the sensitivity of parameters in measuring fairness, we propose to utilize reinforcement learning for dynamic parameters during aggregation. Experimental results demonstrate that our DQFFL outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of overall performance, fairness and convergence speed.

Long-coherence pairing of low-mass conduction electrons in copper-substituted lead apatite

Two entangled qubits emerge as an essential resource for quantum control, which are normally quantum confined with atomic precision. It seems inhibitive that in the macroscopic scope collective qubit pairs manifest long coherence and quantum entanglement, especially at high temperature. Here, we report this exotic ensemble effect in solid-state sintering lead apatite samples with copper substitution, which have been repeatedly duplicated with superior stability and low cost. An extraordinarily low-field absorption signal of cw electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy stems from low-mass conduction electrons implying the coherence of cuprate radicals can be long-termly protected. The pulsed EPR experiments exhibit triplet Rabi oscillation from paired cuprate diradicals with the coherence time exceeding 1 microsecond at 85K. We believe these appealing effects are sufficiently promising to be applied for scalable quantum control and computation.

Interface-tuning of ferroelectricity and quadruple-well state in CuInP$_2$S$_6$ via ferroelectric oxide

Ferroelectric van der Waals CuInP$_2$S$_6$ possesses intriguing quadruple-well states and negative piezoelectricity. Its technological implementation has been impeded by the relatively low Curie temperature (bulk $T_C$ ~42 °C) and the lack of precise domain control. Here we show that CuInP$_2$S$_6$ can be immune to the finite size effect and exhibits enhanced ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, and polar alignment in the ultrathin limit when interfaced with ferroelectric oxide PbZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_3$ films. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies reveal that the polar domains in thin CuInP$_2$S$_6$ fully conform to those of underlying PbZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_3$, where the piezoelectric coefficient changes sign and increases sharply with reducing thickness. High temperature $in$ $situ$ domain imaging points to a significantly enhanced $T_C$ exceeding 200 °C for 13 nm CuInP$_2$S$_6$ on PbZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_3$. Density functional theory modeling and Monte Carlo simulations show that the enhanced polar alignment and $T_C$ can be attributed to interface-mediated structure distortion in CuInP$_2$S$_6$. Our study provides an effective material strategy to engineer the polar properties of CuInP$_2$S$_6$ for flexible nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, and mechanical applications.

RAWIW: RAW Image Watermarking Robust to ISP Pipeline

Invisible image watermarking is essential for image copyright protection. Compared to RGB images, RAW format images use a higher dynamic range to capture the radiometric characteristics of the camera sensor, providing greater flexibility in post-processing and retouching. Similar to the master recording in the music industry, RAW images are considered the original format for distribution and image production, thus requiring copyright protection. Existing watermarking methods typically target RGB images, leaving a gap for RAW images. To address this issue, we propose the first deep learning-based RAW Image Watermarking (RAWIW) framework for copyright protection. Unlike RGB image watermarking, our method achieves cross-domain copyright protection. We directly embed copyright information into RAW images, which can be later extracted from the corresponding RGB images generated by different post-processing methods. To achieve end-to-end training of the framework, we integrate a neural network that simulates the ISP pipeline to handle the RAW-to-RGB conversion process. To further validate the generalization of our framework to traditional ISP pipelines and its robustness to transmission distortion, we adopt a distortion network. This network simulates various types of noises introduced during the traditional ISP pipeline and transmission. Furthermore, we employ a three-stage training strategy to strike a balance between robustness and concealment of watermarking. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that RAWIW successfully achieves cross-domain copyright protection for RAW images while maintaining their visual quality and robustness to ISP pipeline distortions.

Emulating Reader Behaviors for Fake News Detection

The wide dissemination of fake news has affected our lives in many aspects, making fake news detection important and attracting increasing attention. Existing approaches make substantial contributions in this field by modeling news from a single-modal or multi-modal perspective. However, these modal-based methods can result in sub-optimal outcomes as they ignore reader behaviors in news consumption and authenticity verification. For instance, they haven't taken into consideration the component-by-component reading process: from the headline, images, comments, to the body, which is essential for modeling news with more granularity. To this end, we propose an approach of Emulating the behaviors of readers (Ember) for fake news detection on social media, incorporating readers' reading and verificating process to model news from the component perspective thoroughly. Specifically, we first construct intra-component feature extractors to emulate the behaviors of semantic analyzing on each component. Then, we design a module that comprises inter-component feature extractors and a sequence-based aggregator. This module mimics the process of verifying the correlation between components and the overall reading and verification sequence. Thus, Ember can handle the news with various components by emulating corresponding sequences. We conduct extensive experiments on nine real-world datasets, and the results demonstrate the superiority of Ember.

Entanglement Dynamics of Two V-type Atoms with Dipole-Dipole Interaction in Dissipative Cavity

In this work, we study a coupled system of two V-type atoms with dipole-dipole interaction in a dissipative single-mode cavity, which couples with an external environment. We obtain the analytical solution of this model by solving the time dependent Schrodinger equation after we diagonalize Hamiltonian of dissipative cavity by introducing a set of new creation and annihilation operators according to Fano theorem. We also detailedly discuss the influences of cavity-environment coupling, spontaneously generated interference (SGI) parameter and dipole-dipole interaction between two atoms on entanglement dynamics under different initial states. The results show that the SGI parameter has different effects on entanglement dynamics under different initial states. Namely, the SGI parameter will increase the decay rate of the initially maximal entangled state and reduce that of the initially partial entangled state. For the initially product state, the larger SGI parameter corresponds to the more entanglement generated. The entanglement monotonically decreases under the weak cavity-environment coupling, while the oscillation of entanglement will occur under the strong cavity-environment coupling. The larger the dipole-dipole interaction is, the slower the entanglement decays and the more the entanglement will be generated. So the dipole-dipole interaction can not only protect and generate entanglement very effectively, but also enhance the regulation effect of the SGI parameter on entanglement.

Deep learning radiomics for assessment of gastroesophageal varices in people with compensated advanced chronic liver disease

Objective: Bleeding from gastroesophageal varices (GEV) is a medical emergency associated with high mortality. We aim to construct an artificial intelligence-based model of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) of the liver and spleen to precisely assess the risk of GEV and high-risk gastroesophageal varices (HRV). Design: A prospective multicenter study was conducted in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease. 305 patients were enrolled from 12 hospitals, and finally 265 patients were included, with 1136 liver stiffness measurement (LSM) images and 1042 spleen stiffness measurement (SSM) images generated by 2D-SWE. We leveraged deep learning methods to uncover associations between image features and patient risk, and thus conducted models to predict GEV and HRV. Results: A multi-modality Deep Learning Risk Prediction model (DLRP) was constructed to assess GEV and HRV, based on LSM and SSM images, and clinical information. Validation analysis revealed that the AUCs of DLRP were 0.91 for GEV (95% CI 0.90 to 0.93, p < 0.05) and 0.88 for HRV (95% CI 0.86 to 0.89, p < 0.01), which were significantly and robustly better than canonical risk indicators, including the value of LSM and SSM. Moreover, DLPR was better than the model using individual parameters, including LSM and SSM images. In HRV prediction, the 2D-SWE images of SSM outperform LSM (p < 0.01). Conclusion: DLRP shows excellent performance in predicting GEV and HRV over canonical risk indicators LSM and SSM. Additionally, the 2D-SWE images of SSM provided more information for better accuracy in predicting HRV than the LSM.

The Dark Side of Explanations: Poisoning Recommender Systems with Counterfactual Examples

Deep learning-based recommender systems have become an integral part of several online platforms. However, their black-box nature emphasizes the need for explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approaches to provide human-understandable reasons why a specific item gets recommended to a given user. One such method is counterfactual explanation (CF). While CFs can be highly beneficial for users and system designers, malicious actors may also exploit these explanations to undermine the system's security. In this work, we propose H-CARS, a novel strategy to poison recommender systems via CFs. Specifically, we first train a logical-reasoning-based surrogate model on training data derived from counterfactual explanations. By reversing the learning process of the recommendation model, we thus develop a proficient greedy algorithm to generate fabricated user profiles and their associated interaction records for the aforementioned surrogate model. Our experiments, which employ a well-known CF generation method and are conducted on two distinct datasets, show that H-CARS yields significant and successful attack performance.

High quality beam produced by tightly focused laser driven wakefield accelerators

We propose to use tightly focused lasers to generate high quality electron beams in laser wakefield accelerators. In this scheme, the expansion of the laser beam after the focal position enlarges the size of wakefield bubble, which reduces the effective phase velocity of the wake and triggers injection of plasma electrons. This scheme injects a relatively long beam with high charge. The energy spread of the injected beam can be minimized if an optimal acceleration distance is chosen so that the beam chirp is suppressed. Particle-in-cell simulations indicate that electron beams with the charge in the order of nanocoulomb, the energy spread of $\sim 1\%$, and the normalized emittance of $\rm \sim 0.1\ mm\cdot mrad$ can be generated in uniform plasma using $\sim 100\ \rm TW$ laser pulses. An empirical formula is also given for predicting the beam charge. This injection scheme, with a very simple setup, paves the way towards practical high-quality laser wakefield accelerators for table-top electron and radiation sources.

AMGC: Adaptive match-based genomic compression algorithm

Motivation: Despite significant advances in Third-Generation Sequencing (TGS) technologies, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies remain dominant in the current sequencing market. This is due to the lower error rates and richer analytical software of NGS than that of TGS. NGS technologies generate vast amounts of genomic data including short reads, quality values and read identifiers. As a result, efficient compression of such data has become a pressing need, leading to extensive research efforts focused on designing FASTQ compressors. Previous researches show that lossless compression of quality values seems to reach its limits. But there remain lots of room for the compression of the reads part. Results: By investigating the characters of the sequencing process, we present a new algorithm for compressing reads in FASTQ files, which can be integrated into various genomic compression tools. We first reviewed the pipeline of reference-based algorithms and identified three key components that heavily impact storage: the matching positions of reads on the reference sequence(refpos), the mismatched positions of bases on reads(mispos) and the matching failed reads(unmapseq). To reduce their sizes, we conducted a detailed analysis of the distribution of matching positions and sequencing errors and then developed the three modules of AMGC. According to the experiment results, AMGC outperformed the current state-of-the-art methods, achieving an 81.23% gain in compression ratio on average compared with the second-best-performing compressor.

Accelerating Wireless Federated Learning via Nesterov's Momentum and Distributed Principle Component Analysis

A wireless federated learning system is investigated by allowing a server and workers to exchange uncoded information via orthogonal wireless channels. Since the workers frequently upload local gradients to the server via bandwidth-limited channels, the uplink transmission from the workers to the server becomes a communication bottleneck. Therefore, a one-shot distributed principle component analysis (PCA) is leveraged to reduce the dimension of uploaded gradients such that the communication bottleneck is relieved. A PCA-based wireless federated learning (PCA-WFL) algorithm and its accelerated version (i.e., PCA-AWFL) are proposed based on the low-dimensional gradients and the Nesterov's momentum. For the non-convex loss functions, a finite-time analysis is performed to quantify the impacts of system hyper-parameters on the convergence of the PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms. The PCA-AWFL algorithm is theoretically certified to converge faster than the PCA-WFL algorithm. Besides, the convergence rates of PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms quantitatively reveal the linear speedup with respect to the number of workers over the vanilla gradient descent algorithm. Numerical results are used to demonstrate the improved convergence rates of the proposed PCA-WFL and PCA-AWFL algorithms over the benchmarks.

Masked Autoencoders as Image Processors

Transformers have shown significant effectiveness for various vision tasks including both high-level vision and low-level vision. Recently, masked autoencoders (MAE) for feature pre-training have further unleashed the potential of Transformers, leading to state-of-the-art performances on various high-level vision tasks. However, the significance of MAE pre-training on low-level vision tasks has not been sufficiently explored. In this paper, we show that masked autoencoders are also scalable self-supervised learners for image processing tasks. We first present an efficient Transformer model considering both channel attention and shifted-window-based self-attention termed CSformer. Then we develop an effective MAE architecture for image processing (MAEIP) tasks. Extensive experimental results show that with the help of MAEIP pre-training, our proposed CSformer achieves state-of-the-art performance on various image processing tasks, including Gaussian denoising, real image denoising, single-image motion deblurring, defocus deblurring, and image deraining.

Conformational and state-specific effects in reactions of 2,3-dibromobutadiene with Coulomb-crystallized calcium ions

Recent advances in experimental methodology enabled studies of the quantum-state and conformational dependence of chemical reactions under precisely controlled conditions in the gas phase. Here, we generated samples of selected gauche and s-trans 2,3-dibromobutadiene (DBB) by electrostatic deflection in a molecular beam and studied their reaction with Coulomb crystals of laser-cooled $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$ ions in an ion trap. The rate coefficients for the total reaction were found to strongly depend on both the conformation of DBB and the electronic state of $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$. In the $\mathrm{(4p)~^{2}P_{1/2}}$ and $\mathrm{(3d)~^{2}D_{3/2}}$ excited states of $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$, the reaction is capture-limited and faster for the gauche conformer due to long-range ion-dipole interactions. In the $\mathrm{(4s)~^{2}S_{1/2}}$ ground state of $\mathrm{Ca^{+}}$, the reaction rate for s-trans DBB still conforms with the capture limit, while that for gauche DBB is strongly suppressed. The experimental observations were analysed with the help of adiabatic capture theory, ab-initio calculations and reactive molecular dynamics simulations on a machine-learned full-dimensional potential energy surface of the system. The theory yields near-quantitative agreement for s-trans-DBB, but overestimates the reactivity of the gauche-conformer compared to the experiment. The present study points to the important role of molecular geometry even in strongly reactive exothermic systems and illustrates striking differences in the reactivity of individual conformers in gas-phase ion-molecule reactions.

Modulating quantum evolution of moving-qubit by using classical driving

In this work, we study quantum evolution of an open moving-qubit modulated by a classical driving field. We obtain the density operator of qubit at zero temperature and analyze its quantum evolution dynamics by using quantum speed limit time (QSLT) and a non-Markovianity measure introduced recently. The results show that both the non-Markovian environment and the classical driving can speed up the evolution process, this quantum speedup process is induced by the non-Markovianity and the critical points only depend on the qubit velocity. Moreover, the qubit motion will delay the evolution process, but this negative effect of the qubit velocity on the quantum speedup can be suppressed by the classical driving. Finally, we give the corresponding physical explanation by using the decoherence rates.
