Dark photon constraints from a 7.139 GHz cavity haloscope experiment

The dark photon is a promising candidate for the dark matter which comprises most of the matter in our visible Universe. Via kinetic mixing with the Standard Model it can also be resonantly converted to photons in an electromagnetic cavity, offering novel experimental possibilities for the discovery and study of dark matter. We report the results of a pathfinder dark photon dark matter cavity search experiment performed at Hunan Normal University and the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, representing the first stage of the APEX (Axion and dark Photon EXperiment) program. Finding no statistically significant excess, we place an upper limit on the kinetic mixing parameter $|χ|<3.7\times 10^{-13}$ around $m_A\simeq 29.5$ $μ$eV at 90% confidence level. This result exceeds other constraints on dark photon dark matter in this frequency range by roughly an order of magnitude.

MM-Instruct: Generated Visual Instructions for Large Multimodal Model Alignment

This paper introduces MM-Instruct, a large-scale dataset of diverse and high-quality visual instruction data designed to enhance the instruction-following capabilities of large multimodal models (LMMs). While existing visual instruction datasets often focus on question-answering, they struggle to generalize to broader application scenarios such as creative writing, summarization, or image analysis. To address these limitations, we propose a novel approach to constructing MM-Instruct that leverages the strong instruction-following capabilities of existing LLMs to generate novel visual instruction data from large-scale but conventional image captioning datasets. MM-Instruct first leverages ChatGPT to automatically generate diverse instructions from a small set of seed instructions through augmenting and summarization. It then matches these instructions with images and uses an open-sourced large language model (LLM) to generate coherent answers to the instruction-image pairs. The LLM is grounded by the detailed text descriptions of images in the whole answer generation process to guarantee the alignment of the instruction data. Moreover, we introduce a benchmark based on the generated instruction data to evaluate the instruction-following capabilities of existing LMMs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MM-Instruct by training a LLaVA-1.5 model on the generated data, denoted as LLaVA-Instruct, which exhibits significant improvements in instruction-following capabilities compared to LLaVA-1.5 models. The MM-Instruct dataset, benchmark, and pre-trained models are available at https://github.com/jihaonew/MM-Instruct.

Quality-guided Skin Tone Enhancement for Portrait Photography

In recent years, learning-based color and tone enhancement methods for photos have become increasingly popular. However, most learning-based image enhancement methods just learn a mapping from one distribution to another based on one dataset, lacking the ability to adjust images continuously and controllably. It is important to enable the learning-based enhancement models to adjust an image continuously, since in many cases we may want to get a slighter or stronger enhancement effect rather than one fixed adjusted result. In this paper, we propose a quality-guided image enhancement paradigm that enables image enhancement models to learn the distribution of images with various quality ratings. By learning this distribution, image enhancement models can associate image features with their corresponding perceptual qualities, which can be used to adjust images continuously according to different quality scores. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, a subjective quality assessment experiment is first conducted, focusing on skin tone adjustment in portrait photography. Guided by the subjective quality ratings obtained from this experiment, our method can adjust the skin tone corresponding to different quality requirements. Furthermore, an experiment conducted on 10 natural raw images corroborates the effectiveness of our model in situations with fewer subjects and fewer shots, and also demonstrates its general applicability to natural images. Debiasing Machine Unlearning with Counterfactual Examples

The right to be forgotten (RTBF) seeks to safeguard individuals from the enduring effects of their historical actions by implementing machine-learning techniques. These techniques facilitate the deletion of previously acquired knowledge without requiring extensive model retraining. However, they often overlook a critical issue: unlearning processes bias. This bias emerges from two main sources: (1) data-level bias, characterized by uneven data removal, and (2) algorithm-level bias, which leads to the contamination of the remaining dataset, thereby degrading model accuracy. In this work, we analyze the causal factors behind the unlearning process and mitigate biases at both data and algorithmic levels. Typically, we introduce an intervention-based approach, where knowledge to forget is erased with a debiased dataset. Besides, we guide the forgetting procedure by leveraging counterfactual examples, as they maintain semantic data consistency without hurting performance on the remaining dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms existing machine unlearning baselines on evaluation metrics.

First Mapping the Canopy Height of Primeval Forests in the Tallest Tree Area of Asia

We have developed the world's first canopy height map of the distribution area of world-level giant trees. This mapping is crucial for discovering more individual and community world-level giant trees, and for analyzing and quantifying the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation measures in the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon (YTGC) National Nature Reserve. We proposed a method to map the canopy height of the primeval forest within the world-level giant tree distribution area by using a spaceborne LiDAR fusion satellite imagery (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), ICESat-2, and Sentinel-2) driven deep learning modeling. And we customized a pyramid receptive fields depth separable CNN (PRFXception). PRFXception, a CNN architecture specifically customized for mapping primeval forest canopy height to infer the canopy height at the footprint level of GEDI and ICESat-2 from Sentinel-2 optical imagery with a 10-meter spatial resolution. We conducted a field survey of 227 permanent plots using a stratified sampling method and measured several giant trees using UAV-LS. The predicted canopy height was compared with ICESat-2 and GEDI validation data (RMSE =7.56 m, MAE=6.07 m, ME=-0.98 m, R^2=0.58 m), UAV-LS point clouds (RMSE =5.75 m, MAE =3.72 m, ME = 0.82 m, R^2= 0.65 m), and ground survey data (RMSE = 6.75 m, MAE = 5.56 m, ME= 2.14 m, R^2=0.60 m). We mapped the potential distribution map of world-level giant trees and discovered two previously undetected giant tree communities with an 89% probability of having trees 80-100 m tall, potentially taller than Asia's tallest tree. This paper provides scientific evidence confirming southeastern Tibet--northwestern Yunnan as the fourth global distribution center of world-level giant trees initiatives and promoting the inclusion of the YTGC giant tree distribution area within the scope of China's national park conservation.

Calibration of the Cryogenic Measurement System of a Resonant Haloscope Cavity

Possible light bosonic dark matter interactions with the Standard Model photon have been searched by microwave resonant cavities. In this paper, we demonstrate the cryogenic readout system calibration of a 7.138 GHz copper cavity with a loaded quality factor $Q_l=10^4$, operated at 22 mK temperature based on a dilution refrigerator. Our readout system consists of High Electron Mobility Transistors as cryogenic amplifiers at 4 K, plus room-temperature amplifiers and a spectrum analyzer for signal power detection. We test the system with a superconducting two-level system as a single-photon source in the microwave frequency regime and report an overall 95.6 dB system gain and -71.4 dB attenuation in the cavity's input channel. The effective noise temperature of the measurement system is 7.5 K.

Beam test of a baseline vertex detector prototype for CEPC

The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) has been proposed to enable more thorough and precise measurements of the properties of Higgs, W, and Z bosons, as well as to search for new physics. In response to the stringent performance requirements of the vertex detector for the CEPC, a baseline vertex detector prototype was tested and characterized for the first time using a 6 GeV electron beam at DESY II Test Beam Line 21. The baseline vertex detector prototype is designed with a cylindrical barrel structure that contains six double-sided detector modules (ladders). Each side of the ladder includes TaichuPix-3 sensors based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) technology, a flexible printed circuit, and a carbon fiber support structure. Additionally, the readout electronics and the Data Acquisition system were also examined during this beam test. The performance of the prototype was evaluated using an electron beam that passed through six ladders in a perpendicular direction. The offline data analysis indicates a spatial resolution of about 5 um, with detection efficiency exceeding 99 % and an impact parameter resolution of about 5.1 um. These promising results from this baseline vertex detector prototype mark a significant step toward realizing the optimal vertex detector for the CEPC.

Document Set Expansion with Positive-Unlabelled Learning Using Intractable Density Estimation

The Document Set Expansion (DSE) task involves identifying relevant documents from large collections based on a limited set of example documents. Previous research has highlighted Positive and Unlabeled (PU) learning as a promising approach for this task. However, most PU methods rely on the unrealistic assumption of knowing the class prior for positive samples in the collection. To address this limitation, this paper introduces a novel PU learning framework that utilizes intractable density estimation models. Experiments conducted on PubMed and Covid datasets in a transductive setting showcase the effectiveness of the proposed method for DSE. Code is available from https://github.com/Beautifuldog01/Document-set-expansion-puDE.

SensoryT5: Infusing Sensorimotor Norms into T5 for Enhanced Fine-grained Emotion Classification

In traditional research approaches, sensory perception and emotion classification have traditionally been considered separate domains. Yet, the significant influence of sensory experiences on emotional responses is undeniable. The natural language processing (NLP) community has often missed the opportunity to merge sensory knowledge with emotion classification. To address this gap, we propose SensoryT5, a neuro-cognitive approach that integrates sensory information into the T5 (Text-to-Text Transfer Transformer) model, designed specifically for fine-grained emotion classification. This methodology incorporates sensory cues into the T5's attention mechanism, enabling a harmonious balance between contextual understanding and sensory awareness. The resulting model amplifies the richness of emotional representations. In rigorous tests across various detailed emotion classification datasets, SensoryT5 showcases improved performance, surpassing both the foundational T5 model and current state-of-the-art works. Notably, SensoryT5's success signifies a pivotal change in the NLP domain, highlighting the potential influence of neuro-cognitive data in refining machine learning models' emotional sensitivity.

Theory of the spectral function of Fermi polarons at finite temperature

We develop a general theory of Fermi polarons at nonzero temperature, including particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea shake-up to arbitrarily high orders. The exact set of equations of the spectral function is derived by using both Chevy ansatz and diagrammatic approach, and their equivalence is clarified to hold in free space only, with an unregularized infinitesimal interaction strength. The correction to the polaron spectral function arising from two-particle-hole excitations is explicitly examined, for an exemplary case of Fermi polarons in one-dimensional optical lattices. We find quantitative improvements at low temperatures with the inclusion of two-particle-hole excitations, in both polaron energies and decay rates. Our exact theory of Fermi polarons with arbitrary orders of particle-hole excitations might be used to better understand the intriguing polaron dynamical responses in two or three dimensions, whether in free space or within lattices.

Exact theory of the finite-temperature spectral function of Fermi polarons with multiple particle-hole excitations: Diagrammatic theory versus Chevy ansatz

By using both diagrammatic theory and Chevy ansatz approach, we derive an exact set of equations, which determines the spectral function of Fermi polarons with multiple particle-hole excitations at nonzero temperature. In the diagrammatic theory, we find out the complete series of Feynman diagrams for the multi-particle vertex functions, when the unregularized contact interaction strength becomes infinitesimal, a typical situation occurring in two- or three- dimensional free space. The latter Chevy ansatz approach is more widely applicable, allowing a nonzero interaction strength. We clarify the equivalence of the two approaches for an infinitesimal interaction strength and show that the variational coefficients in the Chevy ansatz are precisely the on-shell multi-particle vertex functions divided by an excitation energy. Truncated to a particular order of particle-hole excitations, our exact set of equations can be used to numerically calculate the finite-temperature polaron spectral function, once the numerical singularities in the equations are appropriately treated. As a concrete example, we calculate the finite-temperature spectral function of Fermi polarons in one-dimensional lattices, taking into account all the two-particle-hole excitations. We show that the inclusion of two-particle-hole excitations quantitatively improve the predictions on the polaron spectral function. Our results provide a useful way to solve the challenge problem of accurately predicting the finite-temperature spectral function of Fermi polarons in three-dimensional free space. In addition, our clarification of the complete set of Feynman diagrams for the multi-particle polaron vertex functions may inspire the development of more accurate diagrammatic theories of population-imbalanced strongly interacting Fermi gases, beyond the conventional many-body $T$-matrix approximation.

Microscopic many-body theory of two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy of exciton-polarons in one-dimensional materials

We have developed a microscopic many-body theory of two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) for a model of polarons in one-dimensional (1D) materials. Our theory accounts for contributions from all three processes: excited-state emission (ESE), ground-state bleaching (GSB), and excited-state absorption (ESA). While the ESE and GSB contributions can be accurately described using a Chevy's ansatz with one particle-hole excitation, the ESA process requires information about the many-body eigenstates involving two impurities. To calculate these double polaron states, we have extended the Chevy's ansatz with one particle-hole excitation. The validity of this ansatz was verified by comparing our results with an exact calculation using Bethe's ansatz. Our numerical results reveal that in the weak interaction limit, the ESA contribution cancels out the total ESE and GSB contributions, resulting in less significant spectral features. However, for strong interactions, the features of the ESA contribution and the combined ESE and GSB contributions remain observable in the 2DCS spectra. These features provide valuable information about the interactions between polarons. Additionally, we have investigated the mixing time dynamics, which characterize the quantum coherences of the polaron resonances. Overall, our theory provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and interpreting the 2DCS spectra of polarons in 1D materials, shedding light on their interactions and coherent dynamics.

Document Set Expansion with Positive-Unlabeled Learning: A Density Estimation-based Approach

Document set expansion aims to identify relevant documents from a large collection based on a small set of documents that are on a fine-grained topic. Previous work shows that PU learning is a promising method for this task. However, some serious issues remain unresolved, i.e. typical challenges that PU methods suffer such as unknown class prior and imbalanced data, and the need for transductive experimental settings. In this paper, we propose a novel PU learning framework based on density estimation, called puDE, that can handle the above issues. The advantage of puDE is that it neither constrained to the SCAR assumption and nor require any class prior knowledge. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using a series of real-world datasets and conclude that our method is a better alternative for the DSE task.

Modulating Entanglement Dynamics of Two V-type Atoms in Dissipative Cavity by Detuning, Weak Measurement and Reversal

In this paper, how to modulate entanglement dynamics of two V-type atoms in dissipative cavity by detuning, weak measurement and weak measurement reversal is studied. The analytical solution of this model is obtained by solving Schrodinger Equation after diagonalizing Hamiltonian of dissipative cavity. It is discussed in detail how the entanglement dynamics is influenced by cavity--environment coupling, spontaneously generated interference (SGI) parameter, detuning between cavity with environment and weak measurement reversal. The results show that the entanglement dynamics of different initial states obviously depends on coupling, SGI parameter, detuning and reversing measurement strength. The stronger coupling, the smaller SGI parameter, the larger detuning and the bigger reversing measurement strength can all not only protect but also generate the entanglement, and the detuning is more effectively in tne strong coupling regime than the weak measurement reversal, which is more effectively than the SGI parameter. We also give corresponding physical interpretations.

AttentionLut: Attention Fusion-based Canonical Polyadic LUT for Real-time Image Enhancement

Recently, many algorithms have employed image-adaptive lookup tables (LUTs) to achieve real-time image enhancement. Nonetheless, a prevailing trend among existing methods has been the employment of linear combinations of basic LUTs to formulate image-adaptive LUTs, which limits the generalization ability of these methods. To address this limitation, we propose a novel framework named AttentionLut for real-time image enhancement, which utilizes the attention mechanism to generate image-adaptive LUTs. Our proposed framework consists of three lightweight modules. We begin by employing the global image context feature module to extract image-adaptive features. Subsequently, the attention fusion module integrates the image feature with the priori attention feature obtained during training to generate image-adaptive canonical polyadic tensors. Finally, the canonical polyadic reconstruction module is deployed to reconstruct image-adaptive residual 3DLUT, which is subsequently utilized for enhancing input images. Experiments on the benchmark MIT-Adobe FiveK dataset demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better enhancement performance quantitatively and qualitatively than the state-of-the-art methods.

An Improved Scheduling with Advantage Actor-Critic for Storm Workloads

Various resources as the essential elements of data centers, and the completion time is vital to users. In terms of the persistence, the periodicity and the spatial-temporal dependence of stream workload, a new Storm scheduler with Advantage Actor-Critic is proposed to improve resource utilization for minimizing the completion time. A new weighted embedding with a Graph Neural Network is designed to depend on the features of a job comprehensively, which includes the dependence, the types and the positions of tasks in a job. An improved Advantage Actor-Critic integrating task chosen and executor assignment is proposed to schedule tasks to executors in order to better resource utilization. Then the status of tasks and executors are updated for the next scheduling. Compared to existing methods, experimental results show that the proposed Storm scheduler improves resource utilization. The completion time is reduced by almost 17\% on the TPC-H data set and reduced by almost 25\% on the Alibaba data set.
