Observation of Gapped Dirac Cones in a Two-Dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Lattice

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in a two-dimensional rectangular lattice features gapless or gapped Dirac cones with topological edge states along specific peripheries. While such a simple model has been recently realized in photonic/acoustic lattices and electric circuits, its material realization in condensed matter systems is still lacking. Here, we study the atomic and electronic structure of a rectangular Si lattice on Ag(001) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that the Si lattice hosts gapped Dirac cones at the Brillouin zone corners. Our tight-binding analysis reveals that the Dirac bands can be described by a 2D SSH model with anisotropic polarizations. The gap of the Dirac cone is driven by alternative hopping amplitudes in one direction and staggered potential energies in the other one and hosts topological edge states. Our results establish an ideal platform to explore the rich physical properties of the 2D SSH model.

MPIX Stream: An Explicit Solution to Hybrid MPI+X Programming

The hybrid MPI+X programming paradigm, where X refers to threads or GPUs, has gained prominence in the high-performance computing arena. This corresponds to a trend of system architectures growing more heterogeneous. The current MPI standard only specifies the compatibility levels between MPI and threading runtimes. No MPI concept or interface exists for applications to pass thread context or GPU stream context to MPI implementations explicitly. This lack has made performance optimization complicated in some cases and impossible in other cases. We propose a new concept in MPI, called MPIX stream, to represent the general serial execution context that exists in X runtimes. MPIX streams can be directly mapped to threads or GPU execution streams. Passing thread context into MPI allows implementations to precisely map the execution contexts to network endpoints. Passing GPU execution context into MPI allows implementations to directly operate on GPU streams, lowering the CPU/GPU synchronization cost.

Optimal and robust experiment design for quantum state tomography of star-topology register

While quantum state tomography plays a vital role in the verification and benchmarking of quantum systems, it is an intractable task if the controllability and measurement of quantum registers are constrained. In this paper, we study the quantum state tomography of star-topology registers, in which the individual addressability of peripheral spins is infeasible. Based on the star-symmetry, we decompose the Hilbert space to alleviate the complexity of tomography and design a compact strategy with minimum number of measurements. By optimizing the parameterized quantum circuit for information transfer, the robustness against measurement errors is also improved. Furthermore, we apply this method to a 10-spin star-topology register and demonstrate its ability to characterize large-scale systems. Our results can help future investigations of quantum systems with constrained ability of quantum control and measurement.

Observation of topological flat bands in the kagome semiconductor Nb$_3$Cl$_8$

The destructive interference of wavefunctions in a kagome lattice can give rise to topological flat bands (TFBs) with a highly degenerate state of electrons. Recently, TFBs have been observed in several kagome metals, including Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, FeSn, CoSn, and YMn$_6$Sn$_6$. Nonetheless, kagome materials that are both exfoliable and semiconducting are lacking, which seriously hinders their device applications. Herein, we show that Nb$_3$Cl$_8$, which hosts a breathing kagome lattice, is gapped out because of the absence of inversion symmetry, while the TFBs survive because of the protection of the mirror reflection symmetry. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we directly observe the TFB and a moderate band gap in Nb$_3$Cl$_8$. By mechanical exfoliation, we successfully obtain monolayers of Nb$_3$Cl$_8$ and confirm that they are stable under ambient conditions. In addition, our calculations show that monolayers of Nb$_3$Cl$_8$ have a magnetic ground state, thus providing opportunities to study the interplay between geometry, topology, and magnetism.

Observation of one-dimensional Dirac fermions in silicon nanoribbons

Dirac materials, which feature Dirac cones in the reciprocal space, have been one of the hottest topics in condensed matter physics in the past decade. To date, 2D and 3D Dirac Fermions have been extensively studied, while their 1D counterparts are rare. Recently, Si nanoribbons (SiNRs), which are composed of alternating pentagonal Si rings, have attracted intensive attention. However, the electronic structure and topological properties of SiNRs are still elusive. Here, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements, first-principles calculations, and tight-binding model analysis, we demonstrate the existence of 1D Dirac Fermions in SiNRs. Our theoretical analysis shows that the Dirac cones derive from the armchairlike Si chain in the center of the nanoribbon and can be described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. These results establish SiNRs as a platform for studying the novel physical properties in 1D Dirac materials.

Research on spatial information transmission efficiency and capability of safe evacuation signs

As an indispensable spatial direction information indicator for emergency evacuation, the spatial relationship between safety evacuation signs and evacuees will affect the response time of evacuees and the evacuation efficiency. This paper takes 2 kinds of common safety evacuation signs, hangtag-type and embedded, as the research object and designs space direction information transmission efficiency and capability simulation experiment and fire drill, the efficiency and capability of spatial direction information transmission of safety evacuation signs are studied. The results show that the space angle of the hangtag-type safety evacuation sign is inversely proportional to the information transmission efficiency and capability of the space direction, and the fire drill also confirms this conclusion. When the spatial angle of the embedded safety evacuation sign is 5°, the spatial direction information transmission efficiency and capability increase. Simultaneously, the average escape time of the participants in the fire drill was lower, and the percentage of choosing unfamiliarity exports increased. The evolution of spatial angle has no significant effect on the intention of the response of subjects of different genders; when choosing the direction, males are more easily affected by the change of spatial angle than females; the confidence level of females' choice is more easily affected by spatial angle. In addition, according to the research results, the corresponding three-dimensional structure safety evacuation signs are designed. The functional structure of the safety evacuation signs is perfected, which can effectively improve the efficiency of fire emergency evacuation.

LiDAR-based 4D Panoptic Segmentation via Dynamic Shifting Network

With the rapid advances of autonomous driving, it becomes critical to equip its sensing system with more holistic 3D perception. However, existing works focus on parsing either the objects (e.g. cars and pedestrians) or scenes (e.g. trees and buildings) from the LiDAR sensor. In this work, we address the task of LiDAR-based panoptic segmentation, which aims to parse both objects and scenes in a unified manner. As one of the first endeavors towards this new challenging task, we propose the Dynamic Shifting Network (DS-Net), which serves as an effective panoptic segmentation framework in the point cloud realm. In particular, DS-Net has three appealing properties: 1) Strong backbone design. DS-Net adopts the cylinder convolution that is specifically designed for LiDAR point clouds. 2) Dynamic Shifting for complex point distributions. We observe that commonly-used clustering algorithms are incapable of handling complex autonomous driving scenes with non-uniform point cloud distributions and varying instance sizes. Thus, we present an efficient learnable clustering module, dynamic shifting, which adapts kernel functions on the fly for different instances. 3) Extension to 4D prediction. Furthermore, we extend DS-Net to 4D panoptic LiDAR segmentation by the temporally unified instance clustering on aligned LiDAR frames. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of LiDAR-based panoptic segmentation, we construct and curate benchmarks from two large-scale autonomous driving LiDAR datasets, SemanticKITTI and nuScenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed DS-Net achieves superior accuracies over current state-of-the-art methods in both tasks. Notably, in the single frame version of the task, we outperform the SOTA method by 1.8% in terms of the PQ metric. In the 4D version of the task, we surpass 2nd place by 5.4% in terms of the LSTQ metric.

Analyzing Novel Grant-Based and Grant-Free Access Schemes for Small Data Transmission

Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) does not support data transmission during random access (RA) procedures, which results in unnecessary control signalling overhead and power consumption, especially for small data transmission (SDT). Motivated by this, 3GPP has proposed 4/2-step SDT RA schemes based on the existing grant-based (4-step) and grant-free (2-step) RA schemes, with the aim to enable data transmission during RA procedures in Radio Resource Control (RRC) Inactive state. To compare the 4/2-step SDT RA schemes with the benchmark 4/2-step RA schemes, we provide a spatio-temporal analytical framework to evaluate the RA schemes, which jointly models the preamble detection, Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) decoding, and data transmission procedures. Based on this analytical model, we derive the analytical expressions for the overall packet transmission success probability and average throughput in each RACH attempt. We also derive the average energy consumption in each RACH attempt. Our results show that 2-step SDT RA scheme provides the highest overall packet transmission success probability, and the lowest average energy consumption, but the performance gain decreases with the increase of device intensity.

AdaStereo: An Efficient Domain-Adaptive Stereo Matching Approach

Recently, records on stereo matching benchmarks are constantly broken by end-to-end disparity networks. However, the domain adaptation ability of these deep models is quite limited. Addressing such problem, we present a novel domain-adaptive approach called AdaStereo that aims to align multi-level representations for deep stereo matching networks. Compared to previous methods, our AdaStereo realizes a more standard, complete and effective domain adaptation pipeline. Firstly, we propose a non-adversarial progressive color transfer algorithm for input image-level alignment. Secondly, we design an efficient parameter-free cost normalization layer for internal feature-level alignment. Lastly, a highly related auxiliary task, self-supervised occlusion-aware reconstruction is presented to narrow the gaps in output space. We perform intensive ablation studies and break-down comparisons to validate the effectiveness of each proposed module. With no extra inference overhead and only a slight increase in training complexity, our AdaStereo models achieve state-of-the-art cross-domain performance on multiple benchmarks, including KITTI, Middlebury, ETH3D and DrivingStereo, even outperforming some state-of-the-art disparity networks finetuned with target-domain ground-truths. Moreover, based on two additional evaluation metrics, the superiority of our domain-adaptive stereo matching pipeline is further uncovered from more perspectives. Finally, we demonstrate that our method is robust to various domain adaptation settings, and can be easily integrated into quick adaptation application scenarios and real-world deployments.

Code Clone Detection based on Event Embedding and Event Dependency

The code clone detection method based on semantic similarity has important value in software engineering tasks (e.g., software evolution, software reuse). Traditional code clone detection technologies pay more attention to the similarity of code at the syntax level, and less attention to the semantic similarity of the code. As a result, candidate codes similar in semantics are ignored. To address this issue, we propose a code clone detection method based on semantic similarity. By treating code as a series of interdependent events that occur continuously, we design a model namely EDAM to encode code semantic information based on event embedding and event dependency. The EDAM model uses the event embedding method to model the execution characteristics of program statements and the data dependence information between all statements. In this way, we can embed the program semantic information into a vector and use the vector to detect codes similar in semantics. Experimental results show that the performance of our EDAM model is superior to state of-the-art open source models for code clone detection.

Cylindrical and Asymmetrical 3D Convolution Networks for LiDAR-based Perception

State-of-the-art methods for driving-scene LiDAR-based perception (including point cloud semantic segmentation, panoptic segmentation and 3D detection, \etc) often project the point clouds to 2D space and then process them via 2D convolution. Although this cooperation shows the competitiveness in the point cloud, it inevitably alters and abandons the 3D topology and geometric relations. A natural remedy is to utilize the 3D voxelization and 3D convolution network. However, we found that in the outdoor point cloud, the improvement obtained in this way is quite limited. An important reason is the property of the outdoor point cloud, namely sparsity and varying density. Motivated by this investigation, we propose a new framework for the outdoor LiDAR segmentation, where cylindrical partition and asymmetrical 3D convolution networks are designed to explore the 3D geometric pattern while maintaining these inherent properties. The proposed model acts as a backbone and the learned features from this model can be used for downstream tasks such as point cloud semantic and panoptic segmentation or 3D detection. In this paper, we benchmark our model on these three tasks. For semantic segmentation, we evaluate the proposed model on several large-scale datasets, \ie, SemanticKITTI, nuScenes and A2D2. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art on the leaderboard of SemanticKITTI (both single-scan and multi-scan challenge), and significantly outperforms existing methods on nuScenes and A2D2 dataset. Furthermore, the proposed 3D framework also shows strong performance and good generalization on LiDAR panoptic segmentation and LiDAR 3D detection.

Revisiting Recursive Least Squares for Training Deep Neural Networks

Recursive least squares (RLS) algorithms were once widely used for training small-scale neural networks, due to their fast convergence. However, previous RLS algorithms are unsuitable for training deep neural networks (DNNs), since they have high computational complexity and too many preconditions. In this paper, to overcome these drawbacks, we propose three novel RLS optimization algorithms for training feedforward neural networks, convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks (including long short-term memory networks), by using the error backpropagation and our average-approximation RLS method, together with the equivalent gradients of the linear least squares loss function with respect to the linear outputs of hidden layers. Compared with previous RLS optimization algorithms, our algorithms are simple and elegant. They can be viewed as an improved stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm, which uses the inverse autocorrelation matrix of each layer as the adaptive learning rate. Their time and space complexities are only several times those of SGD. They only require the loss function to be the mean squared error and the activation function of the output layer to be invertible. In fact, our algorithms can be also used in combination with other first-order optimization algorithms without requiring these two preconditions. In addition, we present two improved methods for our algorithms. Finally, we demonstrate their effectiveness compared to the Adam algorithm on MNIST, CIFAR-10 and IMDB datasets, and investigate the influences of their hyperparameters experimentally.

LIF-Seg: LiDAR and Camera Image Fusion for 3D LiDAR Semantic Segmentation

Camera and 3D LiDAR sensors have become indispensable devices in modern autonomous driving vehicles, where the camera provides the fine-grained texture, color information in 2D space and LiDAR captures more precise and farther-away distance measurements of the surrounding environments. The complementary information from these two sensors makes the two-modality fusion be a desired option. However, two major issues of the fusion between camera and LiDAR hinder its performance, \ie, how to effectively fuse these two modalities and how to precisely align them (suffering from the weak spatiotemporal synchronization problem). In this paper, we propose a coarse-to-fine LiDAR and camera fusion-based network (termed as LIF-Seg) for LiDAR segmentation. For the first issue, unlike these previous works fusing the point cloud and image information in a one-to-one manner, the proposed method fully utilizes the contextual information of images and introduces a simple but effective early-fusion strategy. Second, due to the weak spatiotemporal synchronization problem, an offset rectification approach is designed to align these two-modality features. The cooperation of these two components leads to the success of the effective camera-LiDAR fusion. Experimental results on the nuScenes dataset show the superiority of the proposed LIF-Seg over existing methods with a large margin. Ablation studies and analyses demonstrate that our proposed LIF-Seg can effectively tackle the weak spatiotemporal synchronization problem.

Real-time Video Streaming and Control of Cellular-Connected UAV System: Prototype and Performance Evaluation

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play an increasingly important role in military, public, and civilian applications, where providing connectivity to UAVs is crucial for its real-time control, video streaming, and data collection. Considering that cellular networks offer wide area, high speed, and secure wireless connectivity, cellular-connected UAVs have been considered as an appealing solution to provide UAV connectivity with enhanced reliability, coverage, throughput, and security. Due to the nature of UAVs mobility, the throughput, reliability and End-to-End (E2E) delay of UAVs communication under various flight heights, video resolutions, and transmission frequencies remain unknown. To evaluate these parameters, we develop a cellular-connected UAV testbed based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network with its uplink video transmission and downlink control\&command (CC) transmission. We also design algorithms for sending control signal and controlling UAV. The indoor experimental results provide fundamental insights for the cellular-connected UAV system design from the perspective of transmission frequency, adaptability, and link outage, respectively.

A General Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework for Grant-Free NOMA Optimization in mURLLC

Grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) is a potential technique to support massive Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (mURLLC) service. However, the dynamic resource configuration in GF-NOMA systems is challenging due to random traffics and collisions, that are unknown at the base station (BS). Meanwhile, joint consideration of the latency and reliability requirements makes the resource configuration of GF-NOMA for mURLLC more complex. To address this problem, we develop a general learning framework for signature-based GF-NOMA in mURLLC service taking into account the multiple access signature collision, the UE detection, as well as the data decoding procedures for the K-repetition GF and the Proactive GF schemes. The goal of our learning framework is to maximize the long-term average number of successfully served users (UEs) under the latency constraint. We first perform a real-time repetition value configuration based on a double deep Q-Network (DDQN) and then propose a Cooperative Multi-Agent learning technique based on the DQN (CMA-DQN) to optimize the configuration of both the repetition values and the contention-transmission unit (CTU) numbers. Our results show that the number of successfully served UEs under the same latency constraint in our proposed learning framework is up to ten times for the K-repetition scheme, and two times for the Proactive scheme, more than that with fixed repetition values and CTU numbers. In addition, the superior performance of CMA-DQN over the conventional load estimation-based approach (LE-URC) demonstrates its capability in dynamically configuring in long term. Importantly, our general learning framework can be used to optimize the resource configuration problems in all the signature-based GF-NOMA schemes.

Machine Learning for Massive Industrial Internet of Things

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) revolutionizes the future manufacturing facilities by integrating the Internet of Things technologies into industrial settings. With the deployment of massive IIoT devices, it is difficult for the wireless network to support the ubiquitous connections with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Although machine learning is regarded as a powerful data-driven tool to optimize wireless network, how to apply machine learning to deal with the massive IIoT problems with unique characteristics remains unsolved. In this paper, we first summarize the QoS requirements of the typical massive non-critical and critical IIoT use cases. We then identify unique characteristics in the massive IIoT scenario, and the corresponding machine learning solutions with its limitations and potential research directions. We further present the existing machine learning solutions for individual layer and cross-layer problems in massive IIoT. Last but not the least, we present a case study of massive access problem based on deep neural network and deep reinforcement learning techniques, respectively, to validate the effectiveness of machine learning in massive IIoT scenario.

LiDAR-based Panoptic Segmentation via Dynamic Shifting Network

The extracted features are shared by the semantic branch and the instance branch which operates in a bottom-up clustering style. 2) Dynamic Shifting for complex point distributions. We observe that commonly-used clustering algorithms like BFS or DBSCAN are incapable of handling complex autonomous driving scenes with non-uniform point cloud distributions and varying instance sizes. Thus, we present an efficient learnable clustering module, dynamic shifting, which adapts kernel functions on-the-fly for different instances. 3) Consensus-driven Fusion. Finally, consensus-driven fusion is used to deal with the disagreement between semantic and instance predictions. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of LiDAR-based panoptic segmentation, we construct and curate benchmarks from two large-scale autonomous driving LiDAR datasets, SemanticKITTI and nuScenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed DS-Net achieves superior accuracies over current state-of-the-art methods. Notably, we achieve 1st place on the public leaderboard of SemanticKITTI, outperforming 2nd place by 2.6% in terms of the PQ metric.
