Local behavior of positive solutions of higher order conformally invariant equations with a singular set

We study some properties of positive solutions to the higher order conformally invariant equation with a singular set $$ (-Δ)^m u = u^{\frac{n+2m}{n-2m}} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ Ω\backslash Λ, $$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open domain, $Λ$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $1 \leq m < n/2$ and $m$ is an integer. We first establish an asymptotic blow up rate estimate for positive solutions near the singular set $Λ$ when $Λ\subset Ω$ is a compact set with the upper Minkowski dimension $\overline{\textmd{dim}}_M(Λ) < \frac{n-2m}{2}$, or is a smooth $k$-dimensional closed manifold with $k\leq \frac{n-2m}{2}$. We also show the asymptotic symmetry of singular positive solutions suppose $Λ\subset Ω$ is a smooth $k$-dimensional closed manifold with $k\leq \frac{n-2m}{2}$. Finally, a global symmetry result for solutions is obtained when $Ω$ is the whole space and $Λ$ is a $k$-dimensional hyperplane with $k\leq \frac{n-2m}{2}$.

Berry-Curvature Exchange Induced Anderson Localization in Large-Chern-Number Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect

We theoretically investigate the localization mechanism of quantum anomalous Hall Effect (QAHE) with large Chern numbers $\mathcal{C}$ in bilayer graphene and magnetic topological insulator thin films, by applying either nonmagnetic or spin-flip (magnetic) disorders. We show that, in the presence of nonmagnetic disorders, the QAHEs in both two systems become Anderson insulating as expected when the disorder strength is large enough. However, in the presence of spin-flip disorders, the localization mechanisms in these two host materials are completely distinct. For the ferromagnetic bilayer graphene with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the QAHE with $\mathcal{C}=4$ firstly enters a Berry-curvature mediated metallic phase, and then becomes localized to be Anderson insulator along with the increasing of disorder strength. While in magnetic topological insulator thin films, the QAHE with $\mathcal{C=N}$ firstly enters a Berry-curvature mediated metallic phase, then transitions to another QAHE with ${\mathcal{C}}={\mathcal{N}}-1$ along with the increasing of disorder strength, and is finally localized to the Anderson insulator after ${\mathcal{N}}-1$ cycling between the QAHE and metallic phases. For the unusual findings in the latter system, by analyzing the Berry curvature evolution, it is known that the phase transitions originate from the exchange of Berry curvature carried by conduction (valence) bands. At the end, we provide a phenomenological picture related to the topological charges to help understand the underlying physical origins of the two different phase transition mechanisms.

Enhancement of ferroelectric performance in PVDF:Fe3O4 nanocomposite based organic multiferroic tunnel junctions

We report on the fabrication of organic multiferroic tunnel junction (OMFTJ) based on an organic barrier of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF):Fe3O4 nanocomposite. By adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the PVDF barrier, we found that the ferroelectric properties of the OMFTJ are considerably improved compared to that with pure PVDF barrier. It can lead to a tunneling electroresistance (TER) of about 450% at 10K and 100% at room temperature (RT), which is much higher than that of the pure PVDF based device (70% at 10K and 7% at RT). OMFTJs based on the PVDF:Fe3O4 nanocomposite could open new functionalities in smart multiferroic devices via the interplay of the magnetism of nanoparticle with the ferroelectricity of the organic barrier.

BLCS: Brain-Like based Distributed Control Security in Cyber Physical Systems

Cyber-physical system (CPS) has operated, controlled and coordinated the physical systems integrated by a computing and communication core applied in industry 4.0. To accommodate CPS services, fog radio and optical networks (F-RON) has become an important supporting physical cyber infrastructure taking advantage of both the inherent ubiquity of wireless technology and the large capacity of optical networks. However, cyber security is the biggest issue in CPS scenario as there is a tradeoff between security control and privacy exposure in F-RON. To deal with this issue, we propose a brain-like based distributed control security (BLCS) architecture for F-RON in CPS, by introducing a brain-like security (BLS) scheme. BLCS can accomplish the secure cross-domain control among tripartite controllers verification in the scenario of decentralized F-RON for distributed computing and communications, which has no need to disclose the private information of each domain against cyber-attacks. BLS utilizes parts of information to perform control identification through relation network and deep learning of behavior library. The functional modules of BLCS architecture are illustrated including various controllers and brain-like knowledge base. The interworking procedures in distributed control security modes based on BLS are described. The overall feasibility and efficiency of architecture are experimentally verified on the software defined network testbed in terms of average mistrust rate, path provisioning latency, packet loss probability and blocking probability. The emulation results are obtained and dissected based on the testbed.

Topological defects of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating anharmonic trap

We investigate the topological defects and spin structures of binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (D-SOC) in a rotating anharmonic trap. Our results show that for initially mixed BECs without SOC the increasing rotation frequency can lead to the structural phase transition of the system. In the presence of isotropic D-SOC, the system sustains vortex pair,Anderson--Toulouse coreless vortices, circular vortex sheets, and combined vortex structures. In particular, when the rotation frequency is fixed above the radial trapping frequency the strong D-SOC results in a peculiar topological structure which is comprised of multi-layer visible vortex necklaces, hidden vortex necklaces and a hidden giant vortex. In addition, the system exhibits rich spin textures including basic skyrmion, meron cluster, skyrmion string and various skyrmion lattices. The skyrmions will be destroyed in the limit of large D-SOC or rotation frequency. Furthermore, the effects of anisotropic D-SOC and Rashba-Dresselhaus SOC on the topological structures of the system are discussed.

Topological excitations in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in a two-dimensional optical lattice

We study the ground-state configurations and spin textures of rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (RD-SOC), which are confined in a two-dimensional (2D) optical lattice plus a 2D harmonic trap. In the absence of rotation, a relatively small isotropic 2D RD-SOC leads to the generation of ghost vortices for initially miscible BECs, while it gives rise to the creation of rectangular vortex-antivortex lattices for initially immiscible BECs. As the strength of the 2D RD-SOC enhances, the visible vortices or the 2D vortex-antivortex chains are created for the former case, whereas the rectangular vortex-antivortex lattices are transformed into vortex-antivortex rings for the later case. For the initially immiscible BECs with fixed 2D RD-SOC strength, the increase of rotation frequency can result in the structural phase transition from square vortex lattice to irregular triangular vortex lattice and the system transition from initial phase separation to phase mixing. In addition, we analyze the combined effects of 1D RD-SOC and rotation on the vortex configurations of the ground states for the case of initial phase separation. The increase of 1D SOC strength, rotation frequency or both of them may result in the formation of vortex chain and phase mixing. Furthermore, the typical spin textures for both the cases of 2D RD-SOC and 1D RD-SOC are discussed. It is shown that the system favors novel spin textures and skyrmion configurations including an exotic skyrmion-half-skyrmion lattice (skyrmion-meron lattice), a complicated meron lattice, a skyrmion chain, and a Bloch domain wall.

Ground states of dipolar spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap

We investigate the ground-state structures of dipolar spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap. Combined effects of dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the ground states of the system are discussed. A ground-state phase diagram is obtained as a function of the SOC and DDI strengths. As two new degrees of freedom, the DDI and SOC can be used to obtain the desired ground-state phases and to control the phase transition between various ground states. In particular, the system displays exotic topological structures and spin textures, such as half-quantum vortex, vortex string, vortex necklace, complex vortex lattice including giant vortex and hidden antivortex chains, different skyrmions, meron (half-skyrmion)-antimeron (half-antiskyrmion) necklace, and composite meron-antimeron lattice.

Spatially Continuous and High-resolution Land Surface Temperature: A Review of Reconstruction and Spatiotemporal Fusion Techniques

Remotely sensed, spatially continuous and high spatiotemporal resolution (hereafter referred to as high resolution) land surface temperature (LST) is a key parameter for studying the thermal environment and has important applications in many fields. However, difficult atmospheric conditions, sensor malfunctioning and scanning gaps between orbits frequently introduce spatial discontinuities into satellite-retri1eved LST products. For a single sensor, there is also a trade-off between temporal and spatial resolution and, therefore, it is impossible to obtain high temporal and spatial resolution simultaneously. In recent years the reconstruction and spatiotemporal fusion of LST products have become active research topics that aim at overcoming this limitation. They are two of most investigated approaches in thermal remote sensing and attract increasing attention, which has resulted in a number of different algorithms. However, to the best of our knowledge, currently no review exists that expatiates and summarizes the available LST reconstruction and spatiotemporal fusion methods and algorithms. This paper introduces the principles and theories behind LST reconstruction and spatiotemporal fusion and provides an overview of the published research and algorithms. We summarized three kinds of reconstruction methods for missing pixels (spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal methods), two kinds of reconstruction methods for cloudy pixels (Satellite Passive Microwave (PMW)-based and Surface Energy Balance (SEB)-based methods) and three kinds of spatiotemporal fusion methods (weighted function-based, unmixing-based and hybrid methods). The review concludes by summarizing validation methods and by identifying some promising future research directions for generating spatially continuous and high resolution LST products.

Conductivity in nodal line semimetals with short-ranged impurity potentials

We study the transport properties in nodal line semimetals with short-ranged impurity potentials at zero temperature. By computing the Drude conductivity and the corrections from the interference of particle and hole trajectories, we find that the electrons are localized in directions both parallel and perpendicular to the plane of nodal ring. We further calculate the conductivity in a weak magnetic field, and find that the perpendicular magnetic field totally destroys the weak localization gives a positive quantum interference correction, which is similar to the result in Weyl semimetals. But for a parallel magnetic field, because of the $π$ Berry phase of the electron orbit around the nodal line, the magnetoconductivity is negatively proportional to $B$. The difference between the perpendicular and the parallel magnetic field may be verified by experiments. Nodal line semimetals which break inversion and time-reversal symmetry and have spin-orbit coupling are also considered and produce qualitatively the same results.

Effect of Rotational Speed on the Stability of Two Rotating Side-by-side Circular Cylinders at Low Reynolds Number

Flow around two rotating side-by-side circular cylinders of equal diameter D is numerically studied at the Reynolds number Re=40-200 and various rotation rate theta_i. The incoming flow is assumed to be two-dimensional laminar flow. The governing equations are the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and solved by the finite volume method (FVM). The ratio of the center-to-center spacing to the cylinder diameter is T/D=2. The objective of the present work is to investigate the effect of rotational speed and Reynolds number on the stability of the flow. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data and a good agreement is achieved. The stability of the flow is analyzed by using the energy gradient theory, which produces the energy gradient function K to identify the region where the flow is the most prone to be destabilized and the degree of the destabilization. Numerical results reveal that K is the most significant at the separated shear layers of the cylinder pair. With Re increases, the length of the wake is shorter and the vortex shedding generally exhibits a symmetrical distribution for theta_i <theta_crit. It is also shown that the unsteady vortex shedding can be suppressed by rotating the cylinders in the counter-rotating mode.

Superconductivity in an organometallic compound

Organometallic compounds constitute a very large group of substances that contain at least one metal-to-carbon bond in which the carbon is part of an organic group. They have played a major role in the development of the science of chemistry. These compounds are used to a large extent as catalysts (substances that increase the rate of reactions without themselves being consumed) and as intermediates in the laboratory and in industry. Recently, novel quantum phenormena such as topological insulators and superconductors were also suggested in these materials. However, there has been no report on the experimental exploration for the topological state. Evidence for superconductivity from the zero-resistivity state in any organometallic compound has not been achieved yet, though much efforts have been devoted. Here we report the experimental realization of superconductivity with the critical temperature of 3.6 K in a potassium-doped organometallic compound, $ i.e.$ tri-$o$-tolylbismuthine with the evidence of both the Meissner effect and the zero-resistivity state through the $dc$ and $ac$ magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements. The obtained superconducting parameters classify this compound as a type-II superconductor. The benzene ring is identified to be the essential superconducting unit in such a phenyl organometallic compound. The superconducting phase and its composition are determined by the combined studies of the X-ray diffraction and theoretical calculations as well as the Raman spectroscopy measurements. These findings enrich the applications of organometallic compounds in superconductivity and add a new electron-acceptor family for organic superconductors. This work also points to a large pool for finding superconductors from organometallic compounds.

Qualitative analysis for an elliptic system in the punctured space

In this paper, we investigate the qualitative properties of positive solutions for the following two-coupled elliptic system in the punctured space: $$ \begin{cases} -Δu =μ_1 u^{2q+1} + βu^q v^{q+1} \\ -Δv =μ_2 v^{2q+1} + βv^q u^{q+1} \end{cases} \textmd{in} ~\mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\}, $$ where $μ_1, μ_2$ and $β$ are all positive constants, $n\geq 3$. We establish a monotonicity formula that completely characterizes the singularity of positive solutions. We prove a sharp global estimate for both components of positive solutions. We also prove the nonexistence of positive semi-singular solutions, which means that one component is bounded near the singularity and the other component is unbounded near the singularity.

Three-Leaf Dart-Shaped Single-Crystal BN Formation Promoted by Surface Oxygen

Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) single crystals with various shapes have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition over the past several years. Here we report the formation of three-leaf dart (3LD)-shaped single crystals of h-BN on Cu foil by atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The leaves of the 3LD-shaped h-BN are as long as 18 μm and their edges are smooth armchair on one side and stepped armchair on the other. Careful analysis revealed that surface oxygen plays an important role in the formation of the 3LD shape. Oxygen suppressed h-BN nucleation by passivating Cu surface active sites and lowered the edge attachment energy, which caused the growth kinetics to change to a diffusion-controlled mode.

A question of Norton-Sullivan in the analytic case

In 1996, A. Norton and D. Sullivan asked the following question: If $f:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2$ is a diffeomorphism, $h:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2$ is a continuous map homotopic to the identity, and $h f=T_ρ h$ where $ρ\in\mathbb{R}^2$ is a totally irrational vector and $T_ρ:\mathbb{T}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{T}^2,\, z\mapsto z+ρ$ is a translation, are there natural geometric conditions (e.g. smoothness) on $f$ that force $h$ to be a homeomorphism? In [ J. Wang and Z. Zhang, GAFA 2018 ], the first author and Z. Zhang gave a negative answer to the above question in the $C^{\infty}$ category: In general, not even the infinite smoothness condition can force $h$ to be a homeomorphism. In this article, we give a negative answer in the $C^ω$ category: We construct a real-analytic conservative and minimal totally irrational pseudo-rotation of $\mathbb{T}^2$ that is semi-conjugate to a translation but not conjugate to a translation, which simultaneously answers a question raised in [ J. Wang and Z. Zhang, GAFA 2018 ].

On the multiwavelength properties of several γ-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies

The γ-ray detection from several radio-loud (RL) narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies has enabled us to study powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with smaller black hole masses and higher accretion rates than classical blazars. However, the sample of those γ-ray detected NLS1s available is still not large enough for a comprehensive and statistical study. We provide a summary of our detections and follow-up studies of three γ-ray-emitting NLS1s: SDSS J211852.96-073227.5 with flaring γ-ray radiation (Yang et al. 2018, Paliya et al. 2018) and SDSS J122222.55+041315.7 with the highest redshift by far (z~1) (Yao et al. 2015a), along with the prototype 1H 0323+342 (Zhou et al. 2007, Yao et al. 2015b). And we will discuss their multiwavelength properties and variability properties, including implications from high-energy observations in γ-rays and X-rays, infrared and radio properties, and correlated variability between several wavebands.

Traceable instruments for encircled angular flux measurements

We report on the development of an instrument for the measurement of the Encircled Angular Flux (EAF) and on establishing its metrological traceability at the required level of uncertainty. We designed and built for that purpose two independent EAF measuring instruments, both based on the analysis of the two-dimensional far field intensity profile observed at the output of an optical fibre, using either CMOS or CCD cameras. An in depth evaluation of the factors influencing the accuracy of the measurements was performed and allowed determining an uncertainty budget for EAF measurements, which was validated by a first series of inter-comparisons. Theses comparisons were performed between the two independent EAF measuring systems, using a 850 nm LED coupled into a gradient index fibre as a test object. We demonstrated a very good equivalence between the two systems, well within the absolute measurement uncertainties that were estimated at the 10-3 level. Further inter-comparisons using light sources coupled to step-index, large core and small core multimode fibres are still ongoing, with the aim to confirm the performances of the instrument under various illuminating conditions.

SDSS J211852.96-073227.5: a new γ-ray flaring narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy

We report on the identification of a new γ-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy, SDSS J211852.96-073227.5 (hereinafter J2118-0732). The galaxy, at a redshift of 0.26, is associated with a radio source of flat/inverted spectrum at high radio frequencies. The analysis of its optical spectrum obtained in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) revealed a small linewidth of the broad component of the Hβ line (full width at half-maximum = 1585 km s^{-1}), making it a radio-loud NLS1 galaxy -- an intriguing class of active galactic nuclei with exceptional multiwavelength properties. A new γ-ray source centred at J2118-0732 was sporadically detected during 2009--2013 in form of flares by the Fermi-LAT. Our XMM-Newton observations revealed a flat X-ray spectrum described by a simple power law, and a flux variation by a factor of ~2.5 in five months. The source also shows intraday variability in the infrared band. Its broad-band spectral energy distribution can be modelled by emission from a simple one-zone leptonic jet model, and the flux drop from infrared to X-rays in five months can be explained by changes of the jet parameters, though the exact values may be subject to relatively large uncertainties. With the NLS1-blazar composite nucleus, the clear detection of the host galaxy, and the synchronous variations in the multiwavelength fluxes, J2118-0732 provides a new perspective on the formation and evolution of relativistic jets under the regime of relatively small black hole masses and high accretion rates.
