Local estimates for conformal $Q$-curvature equations

We derive local estimates of positive solutions to the conformal $Q$-curvature equation $$ (-Δ)^m u = K(x) u^{\frac{n+2m}{n-2m}} ~~~~~~ in ~ Ω\backslash Λ$$ near their singular set $Λ$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open set, $K(x)$ is a positive continuous function on $Ω$, $Λ$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $2 \leq m < n/2$ and $m$ is an integer. Under certain flatness conditions at critical points of $K$ on $Λ$, we prove that $u(x) \leq C [{dist}(x, Λ)]^{-(n-2m)/2}$ when the upper Minkowski dimension of $Λ$ is less than $(n-2m)/2$.

Confining photonic nanojet in a microwell on microsphere lens for highly efficient light focusing, signal amplification and quantitative detection

Dielectric microspheres or microbeads can squeeze light into the subwavelength scale via photonic nanojet (PNJ) focusing. This enables strong light-matter interactions within its focus and induces extraordinary effects such as enhancements in light emission, signal collection and various other applications. However, critical challenges exist on how to efficiently and precisely loading the studied objects into the desired location of the PNJ focusing, and subsequently measure the field and signal of interests precisely and reliably. Such technique is currently missing. We present for the first time a unique microwell-decorated microsphere lens (u-well lens), with a semi-open microwell sample compartment directly fabricated on top of the microsphere lens. The u-well lens confines PNJ in a semi-open microwell and allows passive trapping of individual micro-object into the PNJ focusing area with high efficiency and spatial accuracy. We demonstrate that individual fluorescent microsphere of different sizes can be readily introduced to the designated location with loading efficiency >70% and generates reproducible enhanced fluorescence signals with standard deviation better than that can be quantitatively measured. A comprehensive analysis on the optical properties of the u-well lens reveals the synergistic effect of field enhancement and collection efficiency on the optical enhancement. We finally employ this special microsphere lens for fluorescent-bead-based biotin concentration analysis. The results suggest a greatly enhanced sensitivity and highly improved detection limit, opening the door for its application in highly sensitive and quantitative detection.

Tunable photon blockade in a two-mode second-order nonlinear system embedded with a two-level atom

The conventional photon blockade for high-frequency mode is investigated in a two-mode second-order nonlinear system embedded with a two-level atom. By solving the master equation and calculating the zero-delay-time second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}(0)$, we obtain that strong photon antibunching can be achieved in this scheme. In particular, we find that by increasing the linear coupling coefficient of the system, a perfect blockade region will be formed near the zero second-order nonlinear coupling coefficient. Similarly, by increasing the nonlinear coupling coefficient of the system, the perfect blockade zone will appear. And this scheme is not sensitive to the reservoir temperature, both of which make the current system easier to implement experimentally.

Rare earth engineering in RMn$_6$Sn$_6$ topological kagome magnets

Exploration of the topological quantum materials with electron correlation is at the frontier of physics, as the strong interaction may give rise to new topological phases and transitions. Here we report that a family of kagome magnets RMn$_6$Sn$_6$ manifest the quantum transport properties analogical to those in the quantum-limit Chern magnet TbMn$_6$Sn$_6$. The topological transport in the family, including quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry phase and large anomalous Hall effect arising from Berry curvature field, points to the existence of massive Dirac fermions. Our observation demonstrates a close relationship between rare-earth magnetism and topological electron structure, indicating the rare-earth elements can effectively engineer the Chern quantum phase in kagome magnets.

Deep Retrieval: Learning A Retrievable Structure for Large-Scale Recommendations

One of the core problems in large-scale recommendations is to retrieve top relevant candidates accurately and efficiently, preferably in sub-linear time. Previous approaches are mostly based on a two-step procedure: first learn an inner-product model, and then use some approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search algorithm to find top candidates. In this paper, we present Deep Retrieval (DR), to learn a retrievable structure directly with user-item interaction data (e.g. clicks) without resorting to the Euclidean space assumption in ANN algorithms. DR's structure encodes all candidate items into a discrete latent space. Those latent codes for the candidates are model parameters and learnt together with other neural network parameters to maximize the same objective function. With the model learnt, a beam search over the structure is performed to retrieve the top candidates for reranking. Empirically, we first demonstrate that DR, with sub-linear computational complexity, can achieve almost the same accuracy as the brute-force baseline on two public datasets. Moreover, we show that, in a live production recommendation system, a deployed DR approach significantly outperforms a well-tuned ANN baseline in terms of engagement metrics. To the best of our knowledge, DR is among the first non-ANN algorithms successfully deployed at the scale of hundreds of millions of items for industrial recommendation systems.

Visualizing Multiwavelength Properties of Classified X-ray Sources from Chandra Source Catalog

We present a simple but informative online tool to visualize the multiwavelength properties of about 2,700 X-ray sources from Chandra Source Catalog version 2.0 with literature verified classifications. Here we describe the catalogs that we used to collect the classifications and extract the MW properties of these sources, and the properties themselves. We also describe the design and functionality of the tool.

Thermally-driven formation of Ge quantum dots on self-catalysed thin GaAs nanowires

Embedding quantum dots (QDs) on nanowire (NW) sidewalls allows the integration of multi-layers of QDs into the active region of radial p-i-n junctions to greatly enhance light emission/absorption. However, the surface curvature makes the growth much more challenging compared with growths on thin-films, particularly on NWs with small diameters (Ø <100 nm). Moreover, the {110} sidewall facets of self-catalyzed NWs favor two-dimensional growth (2D), with the realization of three-dimensional (3D) Stranski-Krastanow growth becoming extremely challenging. Here, we demonstrate thermally-driven formation of Ge dots on the {110} sidewalls facets of thin self-catalyzed NWs without using any surfactant or surface treatment. The 2D-3D transition of the pseudomorphic Ge layer grown on GaAs NWs is driven by energy minimization under high-temperature annealing. This method opens a new avenue to integrate QDs on NWs without any restriction on NW diameter or elastic strain, which can allow the formation of QDs in a wider range of materials systems where the growth of islands by traditional mechanisms is not possible, with benefits for novel NWQD-based optoelectronic devices.

Design of High-Quality Reflectors for Vertical Nanowire Lasers on Si

Nanowires (NWs) with a unique one-dimensional structure can monolithically integrate high-quality III-V semiconductors onto Si platform, which is highly promising to build lasers for Si photonics. However, the lasing from vertically-standing NWs on silicon is much more difficult to achieve compared with NWs broken off from substrates, causing significant challenges in the integration. Here, the challenge of achieving vertically-standing NW lasers is systematically analyzed. The poor optical reflectivity at the NW/Si interface results severe optical field leakage to the substrate, and the commonly used SiO2 or Si2N3 dielectric mask at the interface can only improve it to ~10%, which is the major obstacle for achieving low-threshold lasing. A NW super lattice distributed Bragg reflector is therefore proposed, which is able to greatly improve the reflectivity to >97%. This study provides a highly-feasible method to greatly improve the performance of vertically-standing NW lasers, which can boost the rapid development of Si photonics.

Inflection Point: A New Perspective on Photonic Nanojets

When light propagates through the edge or middle part of microparticle's incoming interface, there is a basic rule that light converges and diverges rapidly or slowly at the output port. These two parts are referred to as region of rapid change (RRC) and region of slow change (RSC), respectively. Finding the boundary point between RRC and RSC is the key to reveal and expound this rule scientifically. Based on the correlation between light convergence-divergence and the slope of emergent light, combined with the relationship between natural logarithm and growth in physical reality and the second derivative of a function in practical significance, we determine the boundary point between RRC and RSC, namely the inflection point. From such perspective, photonic nanojet (PNJ) and near-field focusing by light irradiation on RSC and RRC, as well as the position of the inflection point under different refractive index contrast and the field distribution of light-focusing, are studied with finite-element-method-based numerical simulation and ray-optics-based theoretical analysis. By illuminating light of different field intensity ratios to the regions divided by the inflection point, we demonstrate the generation of photonic hook (PH) and the modulation of PNJ/PH in a new manner.

Robust Protection of III-V Nanowires in Water Splitting by a Thin Compact TiO$_2$ Layer

Narrow-bandgap III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) with a suitable band structure and strong light-trapping ability are ideal for high-efficiency low-cost solar water-splitting systems. However, due to their nanoscale dimension, they suffer more severe corrosion by the electrolyte solution than the thin-film counterparts. Thus, short-term durability is the major obstacle for using these NWs for practical water splitting applications. Here, we demonstrated for the first time that a thin layer (~7 nm thick) of compact TiO$_2$ deposited by atomic layer deposition can provide robust protection to III-V NWs. The protected GaAs NWs maintain 91.4% of its photoluminescence intensity after 14 months of storage in ambient atmosphere, which suggests the TiO$_2$ layer is pinhole-free. Working as a photocathode for water splitting, they exhibited a 45% larger photocurrent density compared with un-protected counterparts and a high Faraday efficiency of 91%, and can also maintain a record-long highly-stable performance among narrow-bandgap III-V NW photoelectrodes; after 67 hours photoelectrochemical stability test reaction in strong acid electrolyte solution (pH = 1), they show no apparent indication of corrosion, which is in stark contrast to the un-protected NWs that are fully failed after 35-hours. These findings provide an effective way to enhance both stability and performance of III-V NW based photoelectrodes, which are highly important for practical applications in solar-energy-based water splitting systems.

Initial boundary value problem for a strongly damped wave equation with a general nonlinearity

In this paper, a strongly damped semilinear wave equation with a general nonlinearity is considered. With the help of a newly constructed auxiliary functional and the concavity argument, a general finite time blow-up criterion is established for this problem. Furthermore, the lifespan of the weak solution is estimated from both above and below. This partially extends some results obtained in recent literatures and sheds some light on the similar effect of power type nonlinearity and logarithmic nonlinearity on finite time blow-up of solutions to such problems.

Large singular solutions for conformal $Q$-curvature equations on $\mathbb{S}^n$

In this paper, we study the existence of positive functions $K \in C^1(\mathbb{S}^n)$ such that the conformal $Q$-curvature equation \begin{equation}\label{001} P_m (v) =K v^{\frac{n+2m}{n-2m}}~~~~~~ {on} ~ \mathbb{S}^n \{equation} has a singular positive solution $v$ whose singular set is a single point, where $m$ is an integer satisfying $1 \leq m < n/2$ and $P_m$ is the intertwining operator of order $2m$. More specifically, we show that when $n\geq 2m+4$, every positive function in $C^1(\mathbb{S}^n)$ can be approximated in the $C^1(\mathbb{S}^n)$ norm by a positive function $K\in C^1(\mathbb{S}^n)$ such that the conformal $Q$-curvature equation has a singular positive solution whose singular set is a single point. Moreover, such a solution can be constructed to be arbitrarily large near its singularity. This is in contrast to the well-known results of Lin \cite{Lin1998} and Wei-Xu \cite{Wei1999} which show that the conformal $Q$-curvature equation, with $K$ identically a positive constant on $\mathbb{S}^n$, $n > 2m$, does not exist a singular positive solution whose singular set is a single point.

Effects of Defects in Superconducting Phase of Twisted Bilayer Graphene

In this work the effects of defects in the superconducting phases of the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) are investigated. A will-accepted low energy effective model and a non-magnetic impurity potential to mimic defects are employed. Different superconducting pairing symmetries, including $s$-wave, $(d+id)$-wave and $(p+ip)$-wave pairing, are considered. In single impurity case, the local density of states (DOS) are calculated for the pairing symmetries above. For different pairing symmetries the number and property of bound states induced by defects are different. In multi-impurity case, the phase diagrams are calculated in terms of effective gap and the strength and density of impurities. In unconventional superconducting phases, namely $(p+ip)$-wave and $(d+id)$-wave phases, superconductivity will be destroyed by impurities with strong strength or concentration. These results can in principle be detected in scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments, and therefore the pairing symmetry, at least whether the superconductivity is conventional or unconventional, may be determined.

Chandra Monitoring of the J1809-1917 Pulsar Wind Nebula and Its Field

PSR J1809-1917 is a young ($τ=51$ kyr) energetic ($\dot{E}=1.8\times10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$) radio pulsar powering an X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN) that exhibits morphological variability. We report on the results of a new monitoring campaign by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO), carried out across 6 epochs with a $\sim$7-week cadence. The compact nebula can be interpreted as a jet-dominated outflow along the pulsar's spin axis. Its variability can be the result of Doppler boosting in the kinked jet whose shape changes with time (akin to the Vela pulsar jet). The deep X-ray image, composed of 405 ks of new and 131 ks of archival CXO data, reveals an arcminute-scale extended nebula (EN) whose axis of symmetry aligns with both the axis of the compact nebula and the direction toward the peak of the nearby TeV source HESS J1809-193. The EN's morphology and extent suggest that the pulsar is likely moving through the ambient medium at a transonic velocity. We also resolved a faint 7$'$-long nonthermal collimated structure protruding from the PWN. It is possibly another instance of a "misaligned outflow" (also known as a "kinetic jet") produced by high-energy particles escaping the PWN's confinement and tracing the interstellar magnetic field lines. Finally, taking advantage of the 536 ks exposure, we analyzed the point sources in the J1809 field and classified them using multiwavelength data. None of the classified sources in the field can reasonably be expected to produce the extended TeV flux in the region, suggesting that PSR J1809-1917 is indeed the counterpart to HESS/eHWC J1809-193.

Sharp blow up estimates and precise asymptotic behavior of singular positive solutions to fractional Hardy-Hénon equations

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the fractional Hardy-Hénon equation $$ (-Δ)^σu = |x|^αu^p ~~~~~~~~~~~ in ~~ B_1 \backslash \{0\} $$ with an isolated singularity at the origin, where $σ\in (0, 1)$ and the punctured unit ball $B_1 \backslash \{0\} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n \geq 2$. When $-2σ< α< 2σ$ and $\frac{n+α}{n-2σ} < p < \frac{n+2σ}{n-2σ}$, we give a classification of isolated singularities of positive solutions, and in particular, this implies sharp blow up estimates of singular solutions. Further, we describe the precise asymptotic behavior of solutions near the singularity. More generally, we classify isolated boundary singularities and describe the precise asymptotic behavior of singular solutions for a relevant degenerate elliptic equation with a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition. These results parallel those known for the Laplacian counterpart proved by Gidas and Spruck (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 34: 525-598, 1981), but the methods are very different, since the ODEs analysis is a missing ingredient in the fractional case. Our proofs are based on a monotonicity formula, combined with blow up (down) arguments, Kelvin transformation and uniqueness of solutions of related degenerate equations on $\mathbb{S}^{n}_+$. We also investigate isolated singularities located at infinity of fractional Hardy-Hénon equations.

Rate coefficients of a roaming reaction H + MgH using the ring polymer molecular dynamics

The ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) was used to calculate the thermal rate coefficients of the two-channel roaming reaction H + MgH. Both reaction channels, tight and roaming, are explicitly considered. This is a pioneering attempt of exerting RPMD method to multi-channel reactions. With the help of a newly developed optimization-interpolation protocol for preparing the initial structures and adaptive protocol for choosing the force constants, we have successfully obtained the thermal rate coefficients. The results are consistent with those from other theoretical methods, such as variational transition state theory (VTST) and quantum dynamics (QD). Especially, RPMD results exhibit negative temperature dependence, which is similar to results from VTST but different from ones from ground state QD calculations.

Direct Observation of One-Dimensional Peierls-Type Charge Density Wave in Twin Boundaries of Monolayer MoTe$_2$

One-dimensional (1D) metallic mirror-twin boundaries (MTBs) in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit a periodic charge modulation and provide an ideal platform for exploring collective electron behavior in the confined system. The underlying mechanism of the charge modulation and how the electrons travel in 1D structures remain controversial. Here, for the first time, we observed atomic-scale structures of the charge distribution within one period in MTB of monolayer MoTe2 by using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). The coexisting apparent periodic lattice distortions and U-shaped energy gap clearly demonstrate a Peierls-type charge density wave (CDW). Equidistant quantized energy levels with varied periodicity are further discovered outside the CDW gap along the metallic MTB. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are in good agreement with the gapped electronic structures and reveal they originate mainly from Mo 4d orbital. Our work presents hallmark evidence of the 1D Peierls-type CDW on the metallic MTBs and offers opportunities to study the underlying physics of 1D charge modulation.

Asymptotic behavior of positive solutions to a nonlinear biharmonic equation near isolated singularities

In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the biharmonic equation $$ Δ^2 u = u^p~~~~~~~in ~ B_1 \backslash \{0\}$$ with an isolated singularity, where the punctured ball $B_1 \backslash \{0\} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 5$ and $\frac{n}{n-4} < p < \frac{n+4}{n-4}$. This equation is relevant for the $Q$-curvature problem in conformal geometry. We classify isolated singularities of positive solutions and describe the asymptotic behavior of positive singular solutions without the sign assumption for $-Δu$. We also give a new method to prove removable singularity theorem for nonlinear higher order equations.
