Strain-Induced Band Engineering in Monolayer Stanene on Sb(111)

Two-dimensional (2D) allotrope of tin with low buckled honeycomb structure, named as stanene, is proposed to be an ideal 2D topological insulator with a nontrivial gap larger than 0.1 eV. Theoretical works also pointed out the topological property of stanene occurs by strain tuning. In this letter, we report the successful realization of high quality, monolayer stanene film as well as monolayer stanene nanoribbons on Sb(111) surface by molecular beam epitaxy, providing an ideal platform to the study of stanene. More importantly, we observed a continuous evolution of the electronic bands of stanene across a nanoribbon, which are related to the strain field gradient in stanene. Our work experimentally confirmed that strain is an effective method for band engineering in stanene, which is important for fundamental research and application of stanene.

Investigating the NCQ scaling of elliptic flow at LHC with a multiphase transport model

The number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling behavior of elliptic flow has been systematically studied at the LHC energy within the framework of a multiphase transport model (AMPT) in this work. We find that the parameters used to generate the initial states and the collision centrality are important for the existence of NCQ scaling even when hadronic rescattering contribution is off in Pb-Pb collisions of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. By turning on the hadron rescattering process, the hadronic evolution impacts are also found to be significant. Extending the analysis to Pb-Pb collsions of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, one would observe similar qualitative features.

Evaluating the electron density model by applying an imaginary modification

A function has been proposed to evaluate the electron density model constructed by inverse Fourier transform using the observed structure amplitudes and trial phase set. The strategy of this function is applying an imaginary electron density modification to the model, and then measuring how well the calculated structure amplitudes of the modified model matches the expected structure amplitudes for the modified correct model. Since the correct model is not available in advance, a method has been developed to estimate the structure amplitudes of the modified correct model. With the estimated structure amplitudes of the modified correct model, the evaluation function can be calculated approximately. Limited tests on simulated diffraction data indicate that this evaluation function may be valid at the data resolution better than 2.5 Å.

Enhanced Dual-frequency Pattern Scheme Based on Spatial-temporal Fringes Method

One of the major challenges of employing a dual-frequency phase-shifting algorithm for phase retrieval is its sensitivity to noise. Yun et. al [H Yun, B Li, S Zhang. 2017] proposed a dual-frequency method based on the Fourier transform profilometry (FTP), yet the low frequency lobes are close to each other for accurate band-pass filtering. In light of this problem, a novel dual-frequency pattern based on the spatial-temporal fringes (STF) method is developed in this paper. Three fringe patterns with two different frequency are required. The low frequency phase is obtained from two low frequency fringe patterns by the STF method, so the signal lobes can be extracted accurately as they are far away from each other. The high frequency phase is retrieved from another fringe pattern without the impact of the DC component. Simulations and experiments are conducted to demonstrate the excellent precision of the proposed method.

Multiple Disk Gaps and Rings Generated by a Single Super-Earth

We investigate the observational signatures of super-Earths (i.e., Earth-to-Neptune mass planets) in their natal disks of gas and dust. Combining two-fluid global hydrodynamics simulations with a radiative transfer code, we calculate the distributions of gas and of sub-mm-sized dust in a disk perturbed by a super-Earth, synthesizing images in near-infrared scattered light and the mm-wave thermal continuum for direct comparison with observations. In low viscosity gas ($α\lesssim10^{-4}$), a super-Earth opens two annular gaps to either side of its orbit by the action of Lindblad torques. This double gap and its associated gas pressure gradients cause dust particles to be dragged by gas into three rings: one ring sandwiched between the two gaps, and two rings located at the gap edges farthest from the planet. Depending on system parameters, additional rings may manifest for a single planet. A double gap located at tens of AUs from a host star in Taurus can be detected in the dust continuum by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) at an angular resolution of ~0".03 after two hours of integration. Ring and gap features persist in a variety of background disk profiles, last for thousands of orbits, and change their relative positions and dimensions depending on the speed and direction of planet migration. Candidate double gaps have been observed by ALMA in systems like HL Tau (D5 and D6) and TW Hya (at 37 and 43 AU); we submit that each double gap is carved by one super-Earth in nearly inviscid gas.

The Parametric Decay Instability of Alfven waves in Turbulent Plasmas and the Applications in the Solar Wind

We perform three dimensional (3D) ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to study the parametric decay instability of Alfven waves in turbulent plasmas and explore its possible applications in the solar wind. We find that, over a broad range of parameters in background turbulence amplitudes, the parametric decay instability of an Alfven wave with various amplitudes can still occur, though its growth rate in turbulent plasmas tends to be lower than both the theoretical linear theory prediction and that in the non-turbulent situations. Spatial - temporal FFT analyses of density fluctuations produced by the parametric decay instability match well with the dispersion relation of the slow MHD waves. This result may provide an explanation of the generation mechanism of slow waves in the solar wind observed at 1 AU. It further highlights the need to explore the effects of density variations in modifying the turbulence properties as well as in heating the solar wind plasmas.

Boundary Quotient C*-algebras of Products of Odometers

In this paper, we study the boundary quotient C*-algebras associated to products of odometers. One of our main results shows that the boundary quotient C*-algebra of the standard product of $k$ odometers over $n_i$-letter alphabets ($1\le i\le k$) is always nuclear, and that it is a UCT Kirchberg algebra if and only if $\{\ln n_i: 1\le i\le k\}$ is rationally independent, if and only if the associated single-vertex $k$-graph C*-algebra is simple. To achieve this, one of our main steps is to construct a topological $k$-graph such that its associated Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra is isomorphic to the boundary quotient C*-algebra. Some relations between the boundary quotient C*-algebra and the C*-algebra $\Q_\bN$ introduced by Cuntz are also investigated. As an easy consequence of our main results, it settles a boundary quotient C*-algebra constructed by Brownlowe-Ramagge-Robertson-Whittaker.

Some loose ends on unbounded order convergence

The notion of almost everywhere convergence has been generalized to vector lattices as unbounded order convergence, which proves a very useful tool in the theory of vector and Banach lattices. In this short note, we establish some new results on unbounded order convergence that tie up some loose ends. In particular, we show that every norm bounded positive increasing net in an order continuous Banach lattice is uo-Cauchy and that every uo-Cauchy net in an order continuous Banach lattice has a uo-limit in the universal completion.

Synthesis of Borophene Nanoribbons on Ag(110) Surface

We present the successful synthesis of single-atom-thick borophene nanoribbons (BNRs) by self-assembly of boron on Ag(110) surface. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies reveal high quality BNRs: all the ribbons are along the [-110] direction of Ag(110), and can run across the steps on the surface. The width of ribbons is distributed in a narrow range around 10.3 nm. High resolution STM images revealed four ordered surface structures in BNRs. Combined with DFT calculations, we found that all the four structures of boron nanoribbons consist of the boron chains with different width, separated by hexagonal hole arrays. The successful synthesis of BNRs enriches the low dimensional allotrope of boron and may promote further applications of borophene

Anisotropic optical trapping as a manifestation of the complex electronic structure of ultracold lanthanide atoms: the example of holmium

The efficiency of optical trapping is determined by the atomic dynamic dipole polarizability, whose real and imaginary parts are associated with the potential energy and photon-scattering rate respectively. In this article we develop a formalism to calculate analytically the real and imaginary parts of the scalar, vector and tensor polarizabilities of lanthanide atoms. We assume that the sum-over-state formula only comprises transitions involving electrons in the valence orbitals like $6s$, $5d$, $6p$ or $7s$, while transitions involving $4f$ core electrons are neglected. Applying this formalism to the ground level of configuration $4f^q6s^2$, we restrict the sum to transitions implying the $4f^q6s6p$ configuration, which yields polarizabilities depending on two parameters: an effective transition energy and an effective transition dipole moment. Then, by introducing configuration-interaction mixing between $4f^q6s6p$ and other configurations, we demonstrate that the imaginary part of the scalar, vector and tensor polarizabilities is very sensitive to configuration-interaction coefficients, whereas the real part is not. The magnitude and anisotropy of the photon-scattering rate is thus strongly related to the details of the atomic electronic structure. Those analytical results agree with our detailed electronic-structure calculations of energy levels, Landé $g$-factors, transition probabilities, polarizabilities and van der Waals $C_6$ coefficients, previously performed on erbium and dysprosium, and presently performed on holmium. Our results show that, although the density of states decreases with increasing $q$, the configuration interaction between $4f^q6s6p$, $4f^{q-1}5d6s^2$ and $4f^{q-1}5d^26s$ is surprisingly stronger in erbium ($q=12$), than in holmium ($q=11$), itself stronger than in dysprosium ($q=10$).

Local and global $Λ$ polarization in a vortical fluid

We compute the fermion spin distribution in the vortical fluid created in off-central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ the event-by-event (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model. The spin polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity in quantum kinetic theory. As a result of strong collectivity, the spatial distribution of the local vorticity on the freeze-out hyper-surface strongly correlates to the rapidity and azimuthal angle distribution of fermion spins. We investigate the sensitivity of the local polarization to the initial fluid velocity in the hydrodynamic model and compute the global polarization of Λ hyperons by the AMPT model. The energy dependence of the global polarization agrees with the STAR data.

Three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the morphology of head-tail radio galaxies based on magnetic tower jet model

The distinctive morphology of head-tail radio galaxies reveals strong interactions between the radio jets and their intra-cluster environment, the general consensus on the morphology origin of head-tail sources is that radio jets are bent by violent intra-cluster weather. We demonstrate in this paper that such strong interactions provide a great opportunity to study the jet properties and also the dynamics of intra-cluster medium (ICM). By three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations, we analyse the detailed bending process of a magnetically dominated jet, based on the magnetic tower jet model. We use stratified atmospheres modulated by wind/shock to mimic the violent intra-cluster weather. Core sloshing is found to be inevitable during the wind-cluster core interaction, which induces significant shear motion and could finally drive ICM turbulence around the jet, making it difficult for jet to survive. We perform detailed comparison between the behaviour of pure hydrodynamical jets and magnetic tower jet, and find that the jet-lobe morphology could not survive against the violent disruption in all of our pure hydrodynamical jet models. On the other hand, the head-tail morphology is well reproduced by using a magnetic tower jet model bent by wind, in which hydrodynamical instabilities are naturally suppressed and the jet could always keep its integrity under the protection of its internal magnetic fields. Finally, we also check the possibility for jet bending by shock only. We find that shock could not bend jet significantly, so could not be expected to explain the observed long tails in head-tail radio galaxies.

White light emission from silicon nanoparticles

As one of the most important semiconductors, silicon (Si) has been used to fabricate electronic devices, waveguides, detectors, and solar cells etc. However, its indirect bandgap hinders the use of Si for making good emitters1. For integrated photonic circuits, Si-based emitters with sizes in the range of 100-300 nm are highly desirable. Here, we show that efficient white light emission can be realized in spherical and cylindrical Si nanoparticles with feature sizes of ~200 nm. The up-converted luminescence appears at the magnetic and electric multipole resonances when the nanoparticles are resonantly excited at their magnetic and electric dipole resonances by using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses with ultralow low energy of ~40 pJ. The lifetime of the white light is as short as ~52 ps, almost three orders of magnitude smaller than the state-of-the-art results reported so far for Si (~10 ns). Our finding paves the way for realizing efficient Si-based emitters compatible with current semiconductor fabrication technology, which can be integrated to photonic circuits.

Branching Systems for Higher-Rank Graph C*-algebras

We define branching systems for finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. From these we construct concrete representations of higher-rank graph C*-algebras on Hilbert spaces. We prove a generalized Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for periodic single-vertex 2-graphs. We use this result to give a sufficient condition under which representations of periodic single-vertex 2-graph C*-algebras arising from branching systems are faithful.

The Tian Pseudo-Atom Method

In this work, the authors give a new method for phase determination, the Tian pseudo atom method (TPAM) or pseudo atom method (PAM) for short. In this new method, the figure of merit function, Rtian, replaces Rcf in the charge flipping algorithm. The key difference between Rcf and Rtian is the oberved structure factor was replaced by the pseudo structure factor. The test results show that Rtian is more powerful and robust than Rcf to estimate the correct structure especially with low resolution data. Therefore, the pseudo atom method could overcome the charge flipping method's defeat to some extent. In theory, the pseudo atom method could deal with quite low resolution data but it needs a further test.

Dirac fermions in borophene

Honeycomb structures of group IV elements can host massless Dirac fermions with non-trivial Berry phases. Their potential for electronic applications has attracted great interest and spurred a broad search for new Dirac materials especially in monolayer structures. We present a detailed investigation of the β12 boron sheet, which is a borophene structure that can form spontaneously on a Ag(111) surface. Our tight-binding analysis revealed that the lattice of the β12-sheet could be decomposed into two triangular sublattices in a way similar to that for a honeycomb lattice, thereby hosting Dirac cones. Furthermore, each Dirac cone could be split by introducing periodic perturbations representing overlayer-substrate interactions. These unusual electronic structures were confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and validated by first-principles calculations. Our results suggest monolayer boron as a new platform for realizing novel high-speed low-dissipation devices.

Observational Evidence of Magnetic Reconnection for Brightenings and Transition Region Arcades in IRIS observations

By using a new method of forced-field extrapolation, we study the emerging flux region AR 11850 observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and Solar Dynamical Observatory (SDO). Our results suggest that the bright points (BPs) in this emerging region have responses in lines formed from the upper photosphere to the transition region, with a relatively similar morphology. They have an oscillation of several minutes according to the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) data at 1600 and 1700 A . The ratio between the BP intensities measured in 1600 A and 1700 A filtergrams reveals that these BPs are heated differently. Our analysis of the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) vector magnetic field and the corresponding topology in AR11850 indicates that the BPs are located at the polarity inversion line (PIL) and most of them related with magnetic reconnection or cancelation. The heating of the BPs might be different due to different magnetic topology. We find that the heating due to the magnetic cancelation would be stronger than the case of bald patch reconnection. The plasma density rather than the magnetic field strength could play a dominant role in this process. Based on physical conditions in the lower atmosphere, our forced-field extrapolation shows consistent results between the bright arcades visible in slit-jaw image (SJI) 1400 A and the extrapolated field lines that pass through the bald patches. It provides a reliable observational evidence for testing the mechanism of magnetic reconnection for the BPs and arcades in emerging flux region, as proposed in simulation works.
