Experimental realization of graphene-like borophene

We report a successful preparation of a purely honeycomb, graphene-like borophene, by using an Al(111) surface as the substrate and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth in ultrahigh vacuum. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveals perfect monolayer borophene with planar, non-buckled honeycomb lattice similar as graphene. Theoretical calculations show that the honeycomb borophene on Al(111) is energetically stable. Remarkably, nearly one electron charge is transferred to each boron atom from the Al(111) substrate and stabilizes the honeycomb borophene structure, in contrast to the little charge transfer in borophene/Ag(111) case. This work demonstrates that the borophene lattice can be manipulated by controlling the charge transfer between the substrate and the borophene film.

Some aspects of global Lambda polarization in heavy-ion collisions

Large orbital angular momentum can be generated in non-central heavy-ion collisions, and part of it is expected to be converted into final particle's polarization due to the spin-orbit coupling. Within the framework of A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, we studied the vorticity-induced polarization of $Λ$ hyperons at the midrapidity region $|η|<1$ in Au-Au collisions at energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7\sim200$ GeV. Our results show that the global polarization decreases with the collisional energies and is consistent with the recent STAR measurements. This behavior can be understood by less asymmetry of participant matter in the midrapidity region due to faster expansion of fireball at higher energies. As another evidence, we discuss how much the angular momentum is deposited in different rapidity region. The result supports our asymmetry argument.

Global $Λ$ polarization in heavy-ion collisions from a transport model

The polarizations of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons are important quantities in extracting the fluid vorticity of the strongly coupled quark gluon plasma and the magnitude of the magnetic field created in off-central heavy-ion collisions, through the spin-vorticity and spin-magnetic coupling. We computed the energy dependence of the global $Λ$ polarization in off-central Au+Au collisions in the energy range $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7-200$ GeV using a multiphase transport model. The observed polarizations with two different impact parameters agree quantitatively with recent STAR measurements. The energy dependence of the global $Λ$ polarization is decomposed as energy dependence of the $Λ$ distribution at hadronization and the space-time distribution of the fluid-vorticity field. The visualization of both the $Λ$ distribution and the fluid-vorticity field show a smaller tilt at higher collisional energies, which indicates that the smaller global polarization at higher collisional energies is caused by a smaller angular momentum deposition at midrapidity.

The acceleration of high-energy protons at coronal shocks: the effect of large-scale streamer-like magnetic field structures

Recent observations have shown that coronal shocks driven by coronal mass ejections can develop and accelerate particles within several solar radii in large solar energetic particle (SEP) events. Motivated by this, we present an SEP acceleration study including the process that a fast shock propagates through a streamer-like magnetic field with both closed and open field lines in the low corona region. The acceleration of protons is modeled by numerically solving the Parker transport equation with spatial diffusion both along and across the magnetic field. We show that particles can be sufficiently accelerated to up to several hundred MeV within 2-3 solar radii. When the shock propagates through a streamer-like magnetic field, particles are more efficiently accelerated compared to the case with a simple radial magnetic field, mainly due to perpendicular shock geometry and the natural trapping effect of closed magnetic fields. Our results suggest that the coronal magnetic field configuration is an important factor for producing large SEP events. We further show that the coronal magnetic field configuration strongly influences the distribution of energetic particles, leading to different locations of source regions along the shock front where most of high energy particles are concentrated. This work may have strong implications to SEP observations. The upcoming Parker Solar Probe will provide in situ observations for the distribution of energetic particles in the coronal shock region, and test the results of the study.

On the Duality of Fractional Repetition Codes

Erasure codes have emerged as an efficient technology for providing data redundancy in distributed storage systems. However, it is a challenging task to repair the failed storage nodes in erasure-coded storage systems, which requires large quantities of network resources. In this paper, we study fractional repetition (FR) codes, which enable the minimal repair complexity and also minimum repair bandwidth during node repair. We focus on the duality of FR codes, and investigate the relationship between the supported file size of an FR code and its dual code. Furthermore, we present a dual bound on the supported file size of FR codes.

Time is What Prevents Everything from Happening at Once: Propagation Time-conscious Influence Maximization

The influence maximization (IM) problem as defined in the seminal paper by Kempe et al. has received widespread attention from various research communities, leading to the design of a wide variety of solutions. Unfortunately, this classical IM problem ignores the fact that time taken for influence propagation to reach the largest scope can be significant in realworld social networks, during which the underlying network itself may have evolved. This phenomenon may have considerable adverse impact on the quality of selected seeds and as a result all existing techniques that use this classical definition as their building block generate seeds with suboptimal influence spread. In this paper, we revisit the classical IM problem and propose a more realistic version called PROTEUS-IM (Propagation Time conscious Influence Maximization) to replace it by addressing the aforementioned limitation. Specifically, as influence propagation may take time, we assume that the underlying social network may evolve during influence propagation. Consequently, PROTEUSIM aims to select seeds in the current network to maximize influence spread in the future instance of the network at the end of influence propagation process without assuming complete topological knowledge of the future network. We propose a greedy and a Reverse Reachable (RR) set-based algorithms called PROTEUS-GENIE and PROTEUS-SEER, respectively, to address this problem. Our algorithms utilize the state-of-the-art Forest Fire Model for modeling network evolution during influence propagation to find superior quality seeds. Experimental study on real and synthetic social networks shows that our proposed algorithms consistently outperform state-of-the-art classical IM algorithms with respect to seed set quality.

Towards End-to-End Car License Plates Detection and Recognition with Deep Neural Networks

In this work, we tackle the problem of car license plate detection and recognition in natural scene images. We propose a unified deep neural network which can localize license plates and recognize the letters simultaneously in a single forward pass. The whole network can be trained end-to-end. In contrast to existing approaches which take license plate detection and recognition as two separate tasks and settle them step by step, our method jointly solves these two tasks by a single network. It not only avoids intermediate error accumulation, but also accelerates the processing speed. For performance evaluation, three datasets including images captured from various scenes under different conditions are tested. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach.

Modulation of Solar Wind Energy Flux Input on Global Tropical Cyclone Activity

Studies on Sun-climate connection have been carried out for several decades, and almost all of them focused on the effects of solar total irradiation energy. As the second major terrestrial energy source from outer space, the solar wind energy flux exhibits more significant long-term variations. However, its link to the global climate change is rarely concerned and remain a mystery. As a fundamental and important aspect of the Earth's weather and climate system, tropical cyclone activity has been causing more and more attentions. Here we investigate the possible modulation of the total energy flux input from the solar wind into the Earth's magnetosphere on the global tropical cyclone activity during 1963--2012. From a global perspective, the accumulated cyclone energy increases gradually since 1963 and start to decrease after 1994. Compare to the previously frequently used parameters, e,g., the sunspot number, the total solar irradiation, the solar F10.7 irradiation, the tropical sea surface temperature, and the south oscillation index, the total solar wind energy flux input exhibits a better correlation with the global tropical cyclone activity. Furthermore, the tropical cyclones seem to be more intense with higher geomagnetic activities. A plausible modulation mechanism is thus proposed to link the terrestrial weather phenomenon to the seemly-unrelated solar wind energy input.

Push and Pull Search for Solving Constrained Multi-objective Optimization Problems

This paper proposes a push and pull search (PPS) framework for solving constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs). To be more specific, the proposed PPS divides the search process into two different stages, including the push and pull search stages. In the push stage, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) is adopted to explore the search space without considering any constraints, which can help to get across infeasible regions very fast and approach the unconstrained Pareto front. Furthermore, the landscape of CMOPs with constraints can be probed and estimated in the push stage, which can be utilized to conduct the parameters setting for constraint-handling approaches applied in the pull stage. Then, a constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (CMOEA) equipped with an improved epsilon constraint-handling is applied to pull the infeasible individuals achieved in the push stage to the feasible and non-dominated regions. Compared with other CMOEAs, the proposed PPS method can more efficiently get across infeasible regions and converge to the feasible and non-dominated regions by applying push and pull search strategies at different stages. To evaluate the performance regarding convergence and diversity, a set of benchmark CMOPs is used to test the proposed PPS and compare with other five CMOEAs, including MOEA/D-CDP, MOEA/D-SR, C-MOEA/D, MOEA/D-Epsilon and MOEA/D-IEpsilon. The comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PPS achieves significantly better or competitive performance than the other five CMOEAs on most of the benchmark set.

On Multi-Relational Link Prediction with Bilinear Models

We study bilinear embedding models for the task of multi-relational link prediction and knowledge graph completion. Bilinear models belong to the most basic models for this task, they are comparably efficient to train and use, and they can provide good prediction performance. The main goal of this paper is to explore the expressiveness of and the connections between various bilinear models proposed in the literature. In particular, a substantial number of models can be represented as bilinear models with certain additional constraints enforced on the embeddings. We explore whether or not these constraints lead to universal models, which can in principle represent every set of relations, and whether or not there are subsumption relationships between various models. We report results of an independent experimental study that evaluates recent bilinear models in a common experimental setup. Finally, we provide evidence that relation-level ensembles of multiple bilinear models can achieve state-of-the art prediction performance.

Evolution of Alfvénic fluctuations inside an interplanetary coronal mass ejection and their contributions to local plasma heating: Joint observations from 1.0 AU to 5.4 AU

Directly tracking an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) by widely separated spacecrafts is a great challenge. However, such an event could provide us a good opportunity to study the evolution of embedded Alfvénic fluctuations (AFs) inside ICME and their contributions to local plasma heating directly. In this study, an ICME observed by Wind at 1.0 au on March 4-6 1998 is tracked to the location of Ulysess at 5.4 au. AFs are commonly found inside the ICME at 1.0 au, with an occurrence rate of 21.7% and at broadband frequencies from 4$\times 10^{-4}$ to 5$\times 10^{-2}$ Hz. When the ICME propagates to 5.4 au, the Aflvénicity decreases significantly, and AFs are rare and only found at few localized frequencies with the occurrence rate decreasing to 3.0%. At the same time, the magnetic field intensity at the AF-rich region has an extra magnetic dissipation except ICME expansion effect. The energetics of the ICME at different radial distance is also investigated here. Under similar magnetic field intensity situations at 1.0 au, the turbulence cascade rate at the AF-rich region is much larger than the value at the AF-lack region. Moreover, it can maintain as the decrease of magnetic field intensity if there is lack of AFs. However, when there exists many AFs, it reduces significantly as the AFs disappear. The turbulence cascade dissipation rate within the ICME is inferred to be 1622.3 $J\cdot kg^{-1}\cdot s^{-1}$, which satisfies the requirement of local ICME plasma heating rate, 1653.2 $J\cdot kg^{-1}\cdot s^{-1}$. We suggest that AF dissipation is responsible for extra magnetic dissipation and local plasma heating inside ICME.

Constraints on parameter space of BLMSSM from particle mass

To explaine the matter-antimatter asymmetry, a supersymmetric extention of the standard model is proposed where baryon and lepton numbers are local gauged(BLMSSM), and exotic superfields are introduced when gauge group is enlarged to $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y \otimes U(1)_B \otimes U(1)_L$. As signals of new physics have not been observed on Large Hadron Collider, the parameter space relevant to the masses of new particles is stringently constrainted. By diagonalizing the mass squared matrices for neutral scalar sectors and the mass matrices for exotic quarks, we plot the masses of new particles varying with different parameters with some assumptions, so the constraints on model parameter is obtained with different lower limit on particle mass.

Two-step wavelet-based estimation for mixed Gaussian fractional processes

A mixed Gaussian fractional process $\{Y(t)\}_{t \in {\Bbb R}} = \{PX(t)\}_{t \in {\Bbb R}}$ is a multivariate stochastic process obtained by pre-multiplying a vector of independent, Gaussian fractional process entries $X$ by a nonsingular matrix $P$. It is interpreted that $Y$ is observable, while $X$ is a hidden process occurring in an (unknown) system of coordinates $P$. Mixed processes naturally arise as approximations to solutions of physically relevant classes of multivariate fractional SDEs under aggregation. We propose a semiparametric two-step wavelet-based method for estimating both the demixing matrix $P^{-1}$ and the memory parameters of $X$. The asymptotic normality of the estimators is established both in continuous and discrete time. Monte Carlo experiments show that the finite sample estimation performance is comparable to that of parametric methods, while being very computationally efficient. As applications, we model a bivariate time series of annual tree ring width measurements, and establish the asymptotic normality of the eigenstructure of sample wavelet matrices.

Magnetized Reverse Shock: Density-fluctuation-induced Field Distortion, Polarization Degree Reduction, and Application to GRBs

The early optical afterglow emission of several gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) shows a high linear polarization degree (PD) of tens of percent, suggesting an ordered magnetic field in the emission region. The light curves are consistent with being of a reverse shock (RS) origin. However, the magnetization parameter, $σ$, of the outflow is unknown. If $σ$ is too small, an ordered field in the RS may be quickly randomized due to turbulence driven by various perturbations so that the PD may not be as high as observed. Here we use the "Athena++" relativistic MHD code to simulate a relativistic jet with an ordered magnetic field propagating into a clumpy ambient medium, with a focus on how density fluctuations may distort the ordered magnetic field and reduce PD in the RS emission for different $σ$ values. For a given density fluctuation, we discover a clear power-law relationship between the relative PD reduction and the $σ$ value of the outflow. Such a relation may be applied to estimate $σ$ of the GRB outflows using the polarization data of early afterglows.

Towards End-to-end Text Spotting with Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks

In this work, we jointly address the problem of text detection and recognition in natural scene images based on convolutional recurrent neural networks. We propose a unified network that simultaneously localizes and recognizes text with a single forward pass, avoiding intermediate processes like image cropping and feature re-calculation, word separation, or character grouping. In contrast to existing approaches that consider text detection and recognition as two distinct tasks and tackle them one by one, the proposed framework settles these two tasks concurrently. The whole framework can be trained end-to-end, requiring only images, the ground-truth bounding boxes and text labels. Through end-to-end training, the learned features can be more informative, which improves the overall performance. The convolutional features are calculated only once and shared by both detection and recognition, which saves processing time. Our proposed method has achieved competitive performance on several benchmark datasets.

Strain-Induced Band Engineering in Monolayer Stanene on Sb(111)

Two-dimensional (2D) allotrope of tin with low buckled honeycomb structure, named as stanene, is proposed to be an ideal 2D topological insulator with a nontrivial gap larger than 0.1 eV. Theoretical works also pointed out the topological property of stanene occurs by strain tuning. In this letter, we report the successful realization of high quality, monolayer stanene film as well as monolayer stanene nanoribbons on Sb(111) surface by molecular beam epitaxy, providing an ideal platform to the study of stanene. More importantly, we observed a continuous evolution of the electronic bands of stanene across a nanoribbon, which are related to the strain field gradient in stanene. Our work experimentally confirmed that strain is an effective method for band engineering in stanene, which is important for fundamental research and application of stanene.

Investigating the NCQ scaling of elliptic flow at LHC with a multiphase transport model

The number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling behavior of elliptic flow has been systematically studied at the LHC energy within the framework of a multiphase transport model (AMPT) in this work. We find that the parameters used to generate the initial states and the collision centrality are important for the existence of NCQ scaling even when hadronic rescattering contribution is off in Pb-Pb collisions of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. By turning on the hadron rescattering process, the hadronic evolution impacts are also found to be significant. Extending the analysis to Pb-Pb collsions of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, one would observe similar qualitative features.

Evaluating the electron density model by applying an imaginary modification

A function has been proposed to evaluate the electron density model constructed by inverse Fourier transform using the observed structure amplitudes and trial phase set. The strategy of this function is applying an imaginary electron density modification to the model, and then measuring how well the calculated structure amplitudes of the modified model matches the expected structure amplitudes for the modified correct model. Since the correct model is not available in advance, a method has been developed to estimate the structure amplitudes of the modified correct model. With the estimated structure amplitudes of the modified correct model, the evaluation function can be calculated approximately. Limited tests on simulated diffraction data indicate that this evaluation function may be valid at the data resolution better than 2.5 Å.
