CosRayMC: a global fitting method in studying the properties of the new sources of cosmic e$^{\pm}$ excesses

Recently PAMELA collaboration published the cosmic nuclei and electron spectra with high precision, together with the cosmic antiproton data updated, and the Fermi-LAT collaboration also updated the measurement of the total $e^+e^-$ spectrum to lower energies. In this paper we develop a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) package {\it CosRayMC}, based on the GALPROP cosmic ray propagation model to study the implications of these new data. It is found that if only the background electrons and secondary positrons are considered, the fit is very bad with $χ_{\rm red}^2 \approx 3.68$. Taking into account the extra $e^+e^-$ sources of pulsars or dark matter annihilation we can give much better fit to these data, with the minimum $χ_{\rm red}^2 \approx 0.83$. This means the extra sources are necessary with a very high significance in order to fit the data. However, the data show little difference between pulsar and dark matter scenarios. Both the background and extra source parameters are well constrained with this MCMC method. Including the antiproton data, we further constrain the branching ratio of dark matter annihilation into quarks $B_q<0.5%$ at $2σ$ confidence level. The possible systematical uncertainties of the present study are discussed.

A Large Area LaBr3/NaI Phoswich for Hard X-ray Astronomy

In terms of energy resolution, temporal response to burst events, and thermal stability, lanthanum bromide doped with Ce is a much better choice than the traditional NaI(Tl) scintillator for hard X-ray astronomy. We present the test results of a phoswich detector with a diameter of 101.6 mm consisting of 6 mm thick LaBr3:Ce and 40 mm thick NaI(Tl), which is the largest one of this type reported so far. The measured energy resolution is 10.6% at 60 keV, varying inversely proportional to the square root of the energy, and the energy nonlinearity is found to be less than 1%, as good as those of smaller phoswiches. The coupled scintillators and phototube also show excellent uniformity across the detecting surface, with a deviation of 0.7% on the pulse amplitude produced by 60 keV gamma-rays. Thanks to the large ratio of light decay times of NaI(Tl) and LaBr3:Ce, 250 ns vs. 16 ns, pulse shape discrimination is much easier for this combination than for NaI(Tl)/CsI(Na). As the light decay time of LaBr3:Ce is about 15 times faster than that of NaI(Tl), this phoswich is more suitable for detection of bright, transient sources such as gamma-ray bursts and soft gamma-ray repeaters. The internal activity of lanthanum produces a count rate of about 6 counts/s at 37.5 keV in the detector. This peak could be used for in-flight spectral calibration and gain correction.

Probing the dynamics of dark energy with divergence-free parametrizations: A global fit study

The CPL parametrization is very important for investigating the property of dark energy with observational data. However, the CPL parametrization only respects the past evolution of dark energy but does not care about the future evolution of dark energy, since $w(z)$ diverges in the distant future. In a recent paper [J.Z. Ma and X. Zhang, Phys.\ Lett.\ B {\bf 699}, 233 (2011)], a robust, novel parametrization for dark energy, $w(z)=w_0+w_1({\ln (2+z)\over 1+z}-\ln2)$, has been proposed, successfully avoiding the future divergence problem in the CPL parametrization. On the other hand, an oscillating parametrization (motivated by an oscillating quintom model) can also avoid the future divergence problem. In this Letter, we use the two divergence-free parametrizations to probe the dynamics of dark energy in the whole evolutionary history. In light of the data from 7-year WMAP temperature and polarization power spectra, matter power spectrum of SDSS DR7, and SN Ia Union2 sample, we perform a full Markov Chain Monte Carlo exploration for the two dynamical dark energy models. We find that the best-fit dark energy model is a quintom model with the EOS across -1 during the evolution. However, though the quintom model is more favored, we find that the cosmological constant still cannot be excluded.

Cold Dark Matter Isocurvature Perturbations: Cosmological Constraints and Applications

In this paper we present the constraints on cold dark matter (CDM) isocurvature contributions to the cosmological perturbations. By employing Markov Chain Monte Carlo method (MCMC), we perform a global analysis for cosmological parameters using the latest astronomical data, such as 7-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP7) observations, matter power spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) luminous red galaxies (LRG), and "Union2" type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) sample. We find that the correlated mixture of adiabatic and isocurvature modes are mildly better fitting to the current data than the pure adiabatic ones, with the minimal $χ^2$ given by the likelihood analysis being reduced by 3.5. We also obtain a tight limit on the fraction of the CDM isocurvature contributions, which should be less than 14.6% at 95% confidence level. With the presence of the isocurvature modes, the adiabatic spectral index becomes slightly bigger, n_s^{\rm adi}=0.972\pm0.014~(1\,σ), and the tilt for isocurvature spectrum could be large, namely, the best fit value is n_s^{\rm iso}=3.020. Finally, we discuss the effect on WMAP normalization priors, shift parameter R, acoustic scale l_A and z_{*}, from the CDM isocurvaure perturbation. By fitting the mixed initial condition to the combined data, we find the mean values of R, l_A and z_{*} can be changed about 2.9σ, 2.8σand 1.5σrespectively, comparing with those obtained in the pure adiabatic condition.

Functionalized Graphene for High Performance Two-dimensional Spintronics Devices

Using first-principles calculations, we explore the possibility of functionalized graphene as high performance two-dimensional spintronics device. Graphene functionalized with O on one side and H on the other side in the chair conformation is found to be a ferromagnetic metal with a spin-filter efficiency up to 85% at finite bias. The ground state of graphene semi-functionalized with F in the chair conformation is an antiferromagnetic semiconductor, and we construct a magnetoresistive device from it by introducing a magnetic field to stabilize its ferromagnetic metallic state. The resulting room-temperature magnetoresistance is up to 5400%, which is one order of magnitude larger than the available experimental values.

Evidences for bouncing evolution before inflation in cosmological surveys

Inflationary cosmology with a preceding nonsingular bounce can lead to changes on the primordial density fluctuations. One significant prediction is that the amplitude of the power spectrum may undergo a jump at a critical scale. In this Letter we propose a phenomenological parametrization of the primordial power spectrum in this scenario and confront the jump feature with latest cosmological data. Performing a global fitting, we utilize this possibility to derive a novel method for constraining bounce parameters via cosmological measurements. Combining the CMB, LSS and SNIa data, our result interestingly reveals that a nonsingular bounce, if exists, should be a fast bounce which happens at a very high energy scale, as we get an upper limit on the bounce parameters.

Dark Energy Perturbations Revisited

In this paper we study the evolution of cosmological perturbations in the presence of dynamical dark energy, and revisit the issue of dark energy perturbations. For a generally parameterized equation of state (EoS) such as w_D(z) = w_0+w_1\frac{z}{1+z}, (for a single fluid or a single scalar field ) the dark energy perturbation diverges when its EoS crosses the cosmological constant boundary w_D=-1. In this paper we present a method of treating the dark energy perturbations during the crossing of the $w_D=-1$ surface by imposing matching conditions which require the induced 3-metric on the hypersurface of w_D=-1 and its extrinsic curvature to be continuous. These matching conditions have been used widely in the literature to study perturbations in various models of early universe physics, such as Inflation, the Pre-Big-Bang and Ekpyrotic scenarios, and bouncing cosmologies. In all of these cases the EoS undergoes a sudden change. Through a detailed analysis of the matching conditions, we show that δ_D and θ_D are continuous on the matching hypersurface. This justifies the method used[1-4] in the numerical calculation and data fitting for the determination of cosmological parameters. We discuss the conditions under which our analysis is applicable.

A Systemic Receptor Network Triggered by Human cytomegalovirus Entry

Virus entry is a multistep process that triggers a variety of cellular pathways interconnecting into a complex network, yet the molecular complexity of this network remains largely unsolved. Here, by employing systems biology approach, we reveal a systemic virus-entry network initiated by human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a widespread opportunistic pathogen. This network contains all known interactions and functional modules (i.e. groups of proteins) coordinately responding to HCMV entry. The number of both genes and functional modules activated in this network dramatically declines shortly, within 25 min post-infection. While modules annotated as receptor system, ion transport, and immune response are continuously activated during the entire process of HCMV entry, those for cell adhesion and skeletal movement are specifically activated during viral early attachment, and those for immune response during virus entry. HCMV entry requires a complex receptor network involving different cellular components, comprising not only cell surface receptors, but also pathway components in signal transduction, skeletal development, immune response, endocytosis, ion transport, macromolecule metabolism and chromatin remodeling. Interestingly, genes that function in chromatin remodeling are the most abundant in this receptor system, suggesting that global modulation of transcriptions is one of the most important events in HCMV entry. Results of in silico knock out further reveal that this entire receptor network is primarily controlled by multiple elements, such as EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor) and SLC10A1 (sodium/bile acid cotransporter family, member 1). Thus, our results demonstrate that a complex systemic network, in which components coordinating efficiently in time and space contributes to virus entry.

Probing CPT Violation with CMB Polarization Measurements

The electrodynamics modified by the Chern-Simons term $\mathcal{L}_{cs}\sim p_μA_ν\tilde F^{μν}$ with a non-vanishing $p_μ$ violates the {\it Charge-Parity-Time Reversal} symmetry (CPT) and rotates the linear polarizations of the propagating {\it Cosmic Microwave Background} (CMB) photons. In this paper we measure the rotation angle $Δα$ by performing a global analysis on the current CMB polarization measurements from the {\it seven-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe} (WMAP7), {\it BOOMERanG 2003} (B03), BICEP and QUaD using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. Neglecting the systematic errors of these experiments, we find that the results from WMAP7, B03 and BICEP all are consistent and their combination gives $Δα=-2.33\pm0.72~{\rm deg}~(68\%~C.L.)$, indicating a $3\,σ$ detection of the CPT violation. The QUaD data alone gives $Δα=0.59\pm0.42~{\rm deg}~(68\%~C.L.)$ which has an opposite sign for the central value and smaller error bar compared to that obtained from WMAP7, B03 and BICEP. When combining all the polarization data together, we find $Δα=-0.04\pm0.35~{\rm deg}~(68\%~C.L.)$ which significantly improves the previous constraint on $Δα$ and test the validity of the fundamental CPT symmetry at a higher level.

Constraints on Dark Energy Parameters from Correlations of CMB with LSS

In this paper, we combine the the latest observational data, including the WMAP five-year data (WMAP5), the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and type Ia supernovae (SN) "union" compilation, and use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to determine the dark energy parameters. We pay particular attention to the Integrated Sache-Wolfe (ISW) data from the cross-correlations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure (LSS). In the ΛCDM model, we find that the ISW data, as a complement to the WMAP data, could significantly improve the constraint of curvature Ω_k. We also check the improvement of constraints from the new prior on the Hubble constant and find this new prior could improve the constraint of Ω_k by a factor of 2. Finally, we study the dynamical evolving EoS of dark energy from the current observational data. Based on the dynamical dark energy model, parameterizing as w(a)=w_0+w_a(1-a), we find that the ΛCDM model remains a good fit to the current data. When taking into account the ISW data, the error bars of w_0 and w_a could be shrunk slightly. Current constraints on the dynamical dark energy model are not conclusive. The future precision measurements are needed.

Entropic cosmology: a unified model of inflation and late-time acceleration

Holography is expected as one of the promising descriptions of quantum general relativity. We present a model for a cosmological system involving two holographic screens and find that their equilibrium exactly yields a standard Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We discuss its cosmological implications by taking into account higher order quantum corrections and quantum nature of horizon evaporation. We will show that this model could give rise to a holographic inflation at high energy scales and realize a late-time acceleration in a unified approach. We test our model from the SN Ia observations and find it can give a nice fit to the data.

A Markov Chain Monte Carlo Study on Dark Matter Property Related to the Cosmic e$^{\pm}$ Excesses

In this paper we develop a Markov Chain Monte Carlo code to study the dark matter properties in interpreting the recent observations of cosmic ray electron/positron excesses. We assume that the dark matter particles couple dominantly to leptons and consider two cases separately with annihilating or decaying into lepton pairs. The constraint on the central density profile from diffuse $γ$-rays around the Galactic center is also included in the Markov Chain Monte Carlo code self-consistently. In the numerical study, 7 parameters are introduced. We fit two data sets independently and find that for the Data set I (PAMELA+ATIC), dark matter with $m_χ\approx0.7$ TeV for annihilation (or 1.4 TeV for decay) and pure $e^+e^-$ channel is favored, while for the Data set II (PAMELA+Fermi-LAT+H.E.S.S.) $m_χ\approx 2$ TeV for annihilation (or 4 TeV for decay) and the combination of $μ^+μ^-$ and $τ^+τ^-$ final states can best fit the data. The H.E.S.S. observation of the Galactic center $γ$-rays puts a strong constraint on the central density profile of the dark matter halo for the annihilation dark matter scenario. In this case the NFW profile which is regarded as the typical predication from the cold dark matter scenario, is excluded with a high significance ($>5σ$). For the decaying dark matter scenario, the constraint is much weaker.

A Question: Quantum Critical Phenomena in XY Spin-Chain Systems With Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interactions

Jordan-Wigner transformation and Bogolyubov transformation are the main steps of the diagonalization of Hamiltonian and paly an important role in the statistical mechanics calculations for one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain model. Many methods can be exploited as a tool to detect quantum phase transition, regions of criticality and scaling behavior in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition, such as geometric phase, fidelity susceptibility, order parameter, and entanglement entropy, which have direct relation with Bogolyubov transformation. We diagonalized the Hamiltonian in XY spin-chain systems with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the results shows that only the energy spectrum but not the coefficients of the Bogolyubov transformation depends on DM interaction. Therefore, the DM interaction may not influence the critical magnetic field of quantum phase transitions and not induce new critical regions in the XY spin model. Moreover, we further prove the ideas by the methods of geometric phases in this model.

Constraints on Models with a Break in the Primordial Power Spectrum

One of the characteristics of the "Matter Bounce" scenario, an alternative to cosmological inflation for producing a scale-invariant spectrum of primordial adiabatic fluctuations on large scales, is a break in the power spectrum at a characteristic scale, below which the spectral index changes from n = 1 to n = 3. We study the constraints which current cosmological data place on the location of such a break, and more generally on the position of the break and the slope at length scales smaller than the break. The observational data we use include the WMAP five-year data set (WMAP5), other CMB data from BOOMERanG, CBI, VSA, and ACBAR, large-scale structure data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, their luminous red galaxies sample), Type Ia Supernovae data (the "Union" compilation), and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Lyman-αforest power spectrum (Lyα) data. We employ the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to constrain the features in the primordial power spectrum which are motivated by the matter bounce model. We give an upper limit on the length scale where the break in the spectrum occurs.

Testing Oscillating Primordial Spectrum and Oscillating Dark Energy with Astronomical Observations

In this paper we revisit the issue of determining the oscillating primordial scalar power spectrum and oscillating equation of state of dark energy from the astronomical observations. By performing a global analysis with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we find that the current observations from five-year WMAP and SDSS-LRG matter power spectrum, as well as the "union" supernovae sample, constrain the oscillating index of primordial spectrum and oscillating equation of state of dark energy with the amplitude less than $|n_{\rm amp}|<0.116$ and $|w_{\rm amp}|<0.232$ at 95% confidence level, respectively. This result shows that the oscillatory structures on the primordial scalar spectrum and the equation of state of dark energy are still allowed by the current data. Furthermore, we point out that these kinds of modulation effects will be detectable (or gotten a stronger constraint) in the near future astronomical observations, such as the PLANCK satellite, LAMOST telescope and the currently ongoing supernovae projects SNLS.

The controlled teleportation of an arbitrary two-atom entangled state in driven cavity QED

In this paper, we propose a scheme for the controlled teleportation of an arbitrary two-atom entangled state $|ϕ>_{12}=a|gg>_{12}+b|ge>_{12}+c|eg>_{12}+d|ee>_{12}$ in driven cavity QED. An arbitrary two-atom entangled state can be teleported perfectly with the help of the cooperation of the third side by constructing a three-atom GHZ entangled state as the controlled channel. This scheme does not involve apparent (or direct) Bell-state measurement and is insensitive to the cavity decay and the thermal field. The probability of the success in our scheme is 1.0.

Constraining Cosmological Parameters with Observational Data Including Weak Lensing Effects

In this paper, we study the cosmological implications of the 100 square degree Weak Lensing survey (the CFHTLS-Wide, RCS, VIRMOS-DESCART and GaBoDS surveys). We combine these weak lensing data with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements from the WMAP5, BOOMERanG, CBI, VSA, ACBAR, the SDSS LRG matter power spectrum and the Type Ia Supernoave (SNIa) data with the "Union" compilation (307 sample), using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to determine the cosmological parameters. Our results show that the ΛCDM model remains a good fit to all of these data. For the dynamical dark energy model with time evolving EoS parameterized as w_{\DE}(a) = w_0 + w_a (1-a), we find that the best-fit model implying the mildly preference of Quintom model whose EoS gets across the cosmological constant boundary during evolution. Regarding the total neutrino mass limit, we obtain the upper limit, \sum m_ν< 0.471 eV (95% C.L.) within the framework of the flat ΛCDM model. Due to the obvious degeneracies between the neutrino mass and the EoS of dark energy model, this upper limit will be relaxed by a factor of 2 in the framework of dynamical dark energy models. For the constraints on the inflation parameters, we find that the upper limit on the ratio of the tensor to scalar is r<0.35 (95% C.L.) and the inflationary models with the slope n_s\geq1 are excluded at more than 2 σconfidence level. In this paper we pay particular attention to the contribution from the weak lensing data and find that the current weak lensing data do improve the constraints on matter density Ω_m, σ_8, \sum{m_ν}, and the EoS of dark energy.

Probing for cosmological parameters with LAMOST measurement

In this paper we study the sensitivity of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) project to the determination of cosmological parameters, employing the Monte Carlo Markov Chains (MCMC) method. For comparison, we first analyze the constraints on cosmological parameters from current observational data, including WMAP, SDSS and SN Ia. We then simulate the 3D matter power spectrum data expected from LAMOST, together with the simulated CMB data for PLANCK and the SN Ia from 5-year Supernovae Legacy Survey (SNLS). With the simulated data, we investigate the future improvement on cosmological parameter constraints, emphasizing the role of LAMOST. Our results show the potential of LAMOST in probing for the cosmological parameters, especially in constraining the equation-of-state (EoS) of the dark energy and the neutrino mass.
