Analytical Evaluation of Coverage-Oriented Femtocell Network Deployment

This paper proposes a coverage-oriented femtocell network deployment scheme, in which the femtocell base stations (BSs) can decide whether to be active or inactive depending on their distances from the macrocell BSs. Specifically, as the areas close to the macrocell BSs already have satisfactory cellular coverage, the femtocell BSs located inside such areas are kept to be inactive. Thus, all the active femtocells are located in the poor macrocell coverage areas. Based on a stochastic geometric framework, the coverage probability can be analyzed with tractable results. Surprisingly, the results show that the proposed scheme, although with a lower defacto femtocell density, can achieve better coverage performance than that keeping all femtocells in the entire network to be active. The analytical results further identify the achievable optimal performance of the new scheme, which provides mobile operators a guideline for femtocell deployment and operation.

Physical Layer Security in Cellular Networks: A Stochastic Geometry Approach

This paper studies the information-theoretic secrecy performance in large-scale cellular networks based on a stochastic geometry framework. The locations of both base stations and mobile users are modeled as independent two-dimensional Poisson point processes. We consider two important features of cellular networks, namely, information exchange between base stations and cell association, to characterize their impact on the achievable secrecy rate of an arbitrary downlink transmission with a certain portion of the mobile users acting as potential eavesdroppers. In particular, tractable results are presented under diverse assumptions on the availability of eavesdroppers' location information at the serving base station, which captures the benefit from the exchange of the location information between base stations.

Dynamical Synapses Enhance Neural Information Processing: Gracefulness, Accuracy and Mobility

Experimental data have revealed that neuronal connection efficacy exhibits two forms of short-term plasticity, namely, short-term depression (STD) and short-term facilitation (STF). They have time constants residing between fast neural signaling and rapid learning, and may serve as substrates for neural systems manipulating temporal information on relevant time scales. The present study investigates the impact of STD and STF on the dynamics of continuous attractor neural networks (CANNs) and their potential roles in neural information processing. We find that STD endows the network with slow-decaying plateau behaviors-the network that is initially being stimulated to an active state decays to a silent state very slowly on the time scale of STD rather than on the time scale of neural signaling. This provides a mechanism for neural systems to hold sensory memory easily and shut off persistent activities gracefully. With STF, we find that the network can hold a memory trace of external inputs in the facilitated neuronal interactions, which provides a way to stabilize the network response to noisy inputs, leading to improved accuracy in population decoding. Furthermore, we find that STD increases the mobility of the network states. The increased mobility enhances the tracking performance of the network in response to time-varying stimuli, leading to anticipative neural responses. In general, we find that STD and STP tend to have opposite effects on network dynamics and complementary computational advantages, suggesting that the brain may employ a strategy of weighting them differentially depending on the computational purpose.

One Way Light Transmission through metal membranes

We propose a new mechanism for irreversibility of light assisted by surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). By achieving the different mutual conversion efficiency between the radiation field and the SPPs on the opposite surfaces of metal membrane, the unidirectional transmission is observed in a quite simple asymmetric metallic sub-wavelength structures Ag(15nm)/AAO, in which the difference of the two-way transmittance is large than 50%.

Attractor Dynamics with Synaptic Depression

Neuronal connection weights exhibit short-term depression (STD). The present study investigates the impact of STD on the dynamics of a continuous attractor neural network (CANN) and its potential roles in neural information processing. We find that the network with STD can generate both static and traveling bumps, and STD enhances the performance of the network in tracking external inputs. In particular, we find that STD endows the network with slow-decaying plateau behaviors, namely, the network being initially stimulated to an active state will decay to silence very slowly in the time scale of STD rather than that of neural signaling. We argue that this provides a mechanism for neural systems to hold short-term memory easily and shut off persistent activities naturally.

On a spectral sequence for twisted cohomologies

Let ($Ω^{\ast}(M), d$) be the de Rham cochain complex for a smooth compact closed manifolds $M$ of dimension $n$. For an odd-degree closed form $H$, there are a twisted de Rham cochain complex $(Ω^{\ast}(M), d+H_\wedge)$ and its associated twisted de Rham cohomology $H^*(M,H)$. We show that there exists a spectral sequence $\{E^{p, q}_r, d_r\}$ derived from the filtration $F_p(Ω^{\ast}(M))=\bigoplus_{i\geq p}Ω^i(M)$ of $Ω^{\ast}(M)$, which converges to the twisted de Rham cohomology $H^*(M,H)$. We also show that the differentials in the spectral sequence can be given in terms of cup products and specific elements of Massey products as well, which generalizes a result of Atiyah and Segal. Some results about the indeterminacy of differentials are also given in this paper.
