Cup products, lower central series, and holonomy Lie algebras

We generalize basic results relating the associated graded Lie algebra and the holonomy Lie algebra from finitely presented, commutator-relators groups to arbitrary finitely presented groups. In the process, we give an explicit formula for the cup-product in the cohomology of a finite 2-complex, and an algorithm for computing the corresponding holonomy Lie algebra, using a Magnus expansion method. We illustrate our approach with examples drawn from a variety of group-theoretic and topological contexts, such as link groups, one-relator groups, and fundamental groups of orientable Seifert fibered manifolds.

Globally Continuous and Non-Markovian Activity Analysis from Videos

Automatically recognizing activities in video is a classic problem in vision and helps to understand behaviors, describe scenes and detect anomalies. We propose an unsupervised method for such purposes. Given video data, we discover recurring activity patterns that appear, peak, wane and disappear over time. By using non-parametric Bayesian methods, we learn coupled spatial and temporal patterns with minimum prior knowledge. To model the temporal changes of patterns, previous works compute Markovian progressions or locally continuous motifs whereas we model time in a globally continuous and non-Markovian way. Visually, the patterns depict flows of major activities. Temporally, each pattern has its own unique appearance-disappearance cycles. To compute compact pattern representations, we also propose a hybrid sampling method. By combining these patterns with detailed environment information, we interpret the semantics of activities and report anomalies. Also, our method fits data better and detects anomalies that were difficult to detect previously.

Novelty Detection Meets Collider Physics

Novelty detection is the machine learning task to recognize data, which belong to an unknown pattern. Complementary to supervised learning, it allows to analyze data model-independently. We demonstrate the potential role of novelty detection in collider physics, using autoencoder-based deep neural network. Explicitly, we develop a set of density-based novelty evaluators, which are sensitive to the clustering of unknown-pattern testing data or new-physics signal events, for the design of detection algorithms. We also explore the influence of the known-pattern data fluctuations, arising from non-signal regions, on detection sensitivity. Strategies to address it are proposed. The algorithms are applied to detecting fermionic di-top partner and resonant di-top productions at LHC, and exotic Higgs decays of two specific modes at a $e^+e^-$ future collider. With parton-level analysis, we conclude that potentially the new-physics benchmarks can be recognized with high efficiency.

Dynamic analysis of noncanonical warm inflation

We study and analyze the dynamic properties of both canonical and noncanonical warm inflationary models with dissipative effects. We consider different models of canonical warm inflation with different dissipative coefficients and prove that the behavior at infinity of quadratic dissipative model distinctly differs from that of the constant dissipative model, which means that quadratic dissipative coefficient increases the possibility of the occurrence of inflation. We also show that the different choice of combination of the parameters in noncanonical warm inflation exhibits dramatically different global phase portraits on the Poincaré disk. We try to illustrate that the noncanonical field will not expand the regime of inflation, but it will increase the possibility of the occurrence of inflation as well and the duration of inflation. Then, by dynamic analysis, we can exclude several inflationary models, like the warm inflation model, with negative dissipative coefficients, and explain that the model without potential is almost impossible. With relevant results, we give the condition when reheating occurs.

Gravitational wave from warm inflation

A fundamental prediction of inflation is a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of gravitational wave. The features of such a signal provide extremely important information about the physics of the early universe. In this paper, we focus on several topics about warm inflation. First, we discuss the stability property about warm inflation based on nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, which gives more fundamental physical illustrations to thermal property of such model. Then, we calculate the power spectrum of gravitational waves generated during warm inflation, in which there are three components contributing to such spectrum: thermal term, quantum term and cross term combining the both. We also discuss some interesting properties about these terms and illustrate them in different panels. As a model different from cold inflation, warm inflation model has its individual properties in observational practice, so we finally give a discussion about the observational effect to distinguish it from cold inflation.

Bright high-repetition-rate source of narrowband extreme-ultraviolet harmonics beyond 22 eV

Novel table-top sources of extreme-ultraviolet light based on high-harmonic generation yield unique insight into the fundamental properties of molecules, nanomaterials, or correlated solids, and enable advanced applications in imaging or metrology. Extending high-harmonic generation to high repetition rates portends great experimental benefits, yet efficient extreme-ultraviolet conversion of correspondingly weak driving pulses is challenging. Here, we demonstrate a highly efficient source of femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet pulses at 50-kHz repetition rate, utilizing the ultraviolet second-harmonic focused tightly into Kr gas. In this cascaded scheme, a photon flux beyond ~3e13 per second is generated at 22.3 eV, with 5e-5 conversion efficiency that surpasses similar harmonics directly driven by the fundamental by two orders of magnitude. The enhancement arises from both wavelength scaling of the atomic dipole and improved spatio-temporal phase-matching, confirmed by simulations. Spectral isolation of a single 72-meV wide harmonic renders this bright, 50-kHz extreme-ultraviolet source a powerful tool for ultrafast photoemission, nanoscale imaging and other applications.

Probing chiral superconductivity in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ underneath the surface by point contact measurements

Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ (SRO) is the prime candidate for chiral $p$-wave superconductor with critical temperature $T_{c}(SRO)\sim$1.5 K. Chiral domains with opposite chiralities $p_{x}\pm ip_{y}$ were proposed, but yet to be confirmed. We measure the field dependence of the point contact (PC) resistance between a tungsten tip and the SRO-Ru eutectic crystal, where micrometer-sized Ru inclusions are embedded in SRO with atomic sharp interface. Ruthenium is an $s$-wave superconductor with $T_{c}(Ru)\sim$0.5 K, flux pinned near the Ru inclusions can suppress its superconductivity as reflected from the PC resistance and spectra. This flux pinning effect is originated from SRO \textit{underneath} the surface and is very strong. To fully remove it, one has to thermal cycle the sample above $T_{c}(SRO)$. This resembles the thermal demagnetization for a ferromagnet, where ferromagnetic domains are randomized above its Curie temperature. Another way is by applying alternating fields with decreasing amplitude, resembling field demagnetization for the ferromagnet. The observed hysteresis in magnetoresistance can be explained by domain dynamics, providing support for the existence of chiral domains. The origin of strong pinning \textit{underneath} the surface is also discussed.

Pure virtual braids, resonance, and formality

We investigate the resonance varieties, lower central series ranks, and Chen ranks of the pure virtual braid groups and their upper-triangular subgroups. As an application, we give a complete answer to the 1-formality question for this class of groups. In the process, we explore various connections between the Alexander-type invariants of a finitely generated group and several of the graded Lie algebras associated to it, and discuss possible extensions of the resonance-Chen ranks formula in this context.

Reply to Comment on "Tip induced unconventional superconductivity on Weyl semimetal TaAs"

Recently, we presented a paper about the tip-induced superconducting phase on TaAs single crystal (arXiv:1607.00513). A conductance plateau with double conductance peaks at finite bias, sharp double dips and a zero bias conductance peak were observed in the point contact spectra (PCS). These three features in one PCS suggest the possibility of p-wave like superconductivity and Majorana zero modes in the surface. Soon after our paper posted on arXiv, Gayen el al. (arXiv:1607.01405) questioned the underlying mechanism of our observations based on their experimental measurements in conventional superconductors(Pb and Nb) and conclusively indicated that the superconductivity observed in our TaAs crystal is conventional. We disagree with their quick conclusion without any specific study on the TaAs materials. We will explain in the following that for the clean (Z=0) point contact (PC) in ballistic limit, the superconducting transition feature in temperature dependence of PC resistance is expected. And the critical current effect claimed by Gayen el al. cannot explain the observed PCS in our paper.

Tip induced unconventional superconductivity on Weyl semimetal TaAs

Weyl fermion is a massless Dirac fermion with definite chirality, which has been long pursued since 1929. Though it has not been observed as a fundamental particle in nature, Weyl fermion can be realized as low-energy excitation around Weyl point in Weyl semimetal, which possesses Weyl fermion cones in the bulk and nontrivial Fermi arc states on the surface. As a firstly discovered Weyl semimetal, TaAs crystal possesses 12 pairs of Weyl points in the momentum space, which are topologically protected against small perturbations. Here, we report for the first time the tip induced superconductivity on TaAs crystal by point contact spectroscopy. A conductance plateau and sharp double dips are observed in the point contact spectra, indicating p-wave like unconventional superconductivity. Furthermore, the zero bias conductance peak in low temperature regime is detected, suggesting potentially the existence of Majorana zero modes. The experimentally observed tunneling spectra can be interpreted with a novel mirror-symmetry protected topological superconductor induced in TaAs, which can exhibit zero bias and double finite bias peaks, and double conductance dips in the measurements. Our work can open a broad avenue in search for new topological superconducting phases from topological Weyl materials and trigger intensive investigations for pursuing Majorana fermions.

Superconductivity in topologically nontrivial material Au2Pb

The search for nontrivial superconductivity in novel quantum materials is currently a most attractive topic in condensed matter physics and material science. The experimental studies have progressed quickly over the past couple of years. In this article, we report systematic studies of superconductivity in Au2Pb single crystals. The bulk superconductivity (onset transition temperature, Tconset= 1.3 K) of Au2Pb is characterized by both transport and diamagnetic measurements, where the upper critical field Hc2 shows unusual quasi-linear temperature dependence. The superconducting gap is revealed by point contact measurement with gold tip. However, when using tungsten (W) tip, which is much harder, the superconducting gap probed is largely enhanced as demonstrated by the increases of both Tconset and upper critical field (Hc2). This can be interpreted as a result of increase in density of states under external anisotropic stress imposed by the tip, as revealed by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, novel phase winding of the pseudospin texture along k-space loops around the Fermi energy is uncovered from the calculations, indicating that the observed superconductivity in Au2Pb may have nontrivial topology.

The pure braid groups and their relatives

In this mostly survey paper, we investigate the resonance varieties, the lower central series ranks, and the Chen ranks, as well as the residual and formality properties of several families of braid-like groups: the pure braid groups $P_n$, the welded pure braid groups $wP_n$, the virtual pure braid groups $vP_n$, as well as their `upper' variants, $wP_n^+$ and $vP_n^+$. We also discuss several natural homomorphisms between these groups, and various ways to distinguish among the pure braid groups and their relatives.

Approach of background metric expansion to a new metric ansatz for gauged and ungauged Kaluza-Klein supergravity black holes

In a previous paper [S.Q. Wu, Phys. Rev. D 83, 121502(R) (2011)], a new kind of metric ansatz was found to fairly describe all already known black hole solutions in the ungauged Kaluza-Klein (KK) supergravity theories. That metric ansatz somewhat resembles to the famous Kerr-Schild (KS) form, but it is different from the KS one in two distinct aspects. That is, apart from a global conformal factor, the metric ansatz can be written as a vacuum background spacetime plus a "perturbation" modification term, the latter of which is associated with a timelike geodesic vector field rather than a null geodesic congruence in the usual KS ansatz. In this paper, we shall study this novel metric ansatz in detail, aiming at achieving some inspiration as to the construction of rotating charged AdS black holes with multiple charges in other gauged supergravity theories. In order to investigate the metric properties of the general KK-AdS solutions, in this paper we devise a new effective method, dubbed the background metric expansion method, which can be thought of as a generalization of the perturbation expansion method, to deal with the Lagrangian and all equations of motion. In addition to two previously known conditions, namely the timelike and geodesic properties of the vector, we get the three additional constraints via contracting the Maxwell and Einstein equations once or twice with this timelike geodesic vector. In particular, we find that these are a simple set of sufficient conditions to determine the vector and the dilaton scalar around the background metric, which is helpful in obtaining new exact solutions. With these five simplified equations in hand, we rederive the general rotating charged KK-(A)dS black hole solutions with spherical horizon topology and obtain new solutions with planar topology in all dimensions.

A Rich Spectrum of Neural Field Dynamics in the Presence of Short-Term Synaptic Depression

In continuous attractor neural networks (CANNs), spatially continuous information such as orientation, head direction, and spatial location is represented by Gaussian-like tuning curves that can be displaced continuously in the space of the preferred stimuli of the neurons. We investigate how short-term synaptic depression (STD) can reshape the intrinsic dynamics of the CANN model and its responses to a single static input. In particular, CANNs with STD can support various complex firing patterns and chaotic behaviors. These chaotic behaviors have the potential to encode various stimuli in the neuronal system.

Observation of superconductivity in 3D Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 crystal

Lately, the three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, which possesses 3D linear dispersion in electronic structure as a bulk analogue of graphene, has generated widespread interests in both material science and condensed matter physics. Very recently, crystalline Cd3As2 has been proposed and proved to be one of 3D Dirac semimetals which can survive in atmosphere. Here, by controlled point contact (PC) measurement, we observe the exotic superconductivity around point contact region on the surface of Cd3As2 crystal. The observation of zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and double conductance peaks (DCPs) symmetric to zero bias further reveal p-wave like unconventional superconductivity in Cd3As2 quantum matter. Considering the topological property of the 3D Dirac semimetal, our findings may indicate that the Cd3As2 crystal under certain conditions is a candidate of the topological superconductor, which is predicted to support Majorana zero modes or gapless Majorana edge/surface modes in the boundary depending on the dimensionality of the material.

Enhanced superconductivity at the interface of W/Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ point contact

Differential resistance measurements are conducted for point contacts (PCs) between tungsten tip approaching along the $c$ axis direction and the $ab$ plane of Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ single crystal. Three key features are found. Firstly, within 0.2 mV there is a dome like conductance enhancement due to Andreev reflection at the normal-superconducting interface. By pushing the W tip further, the conductance enhancement increases from 3\% to more than 20\%, much larger than that was previously reported, probably due to the pressure exerted by the tip. Secondly, there are also superconducting like features at bias higher than 0.2 mV which persists up to 6.2 K, resembling the enhanced superconductivity under uniaxial pressure for bulk Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ crystals but more pronounced here. Third, the logarithmic background can be fitted with the Altshuler-Aronov theory of tunneling into quasi two dimensional electron system, consistent with the highly anisotropic electronic system in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$.

Coverage and Throughput Analysis with a Non-Uniform Small Cell Deployment

Small cell network (SCN) offers, for the first time, a low-cost and scalable mechanism to meet the forecast data-traffic demand. In this paper, we propose a non-uniform SCN deployment scheme. The small cell base stations (BSs) in this scheme will not be utilized in the region within a prescribed distance away from any macrocell BSs, defined as the inner region. Based upon the analytical framework provided in this work, the downlink coverage and single user throughput are precisely characterized. Provided that the inner region size is appropriately chosen, we find that the proposed non-uniform SCN deployment scheme can maintain the same level of cellular coverage performance even with 50% less small cell BSs used than the uniform SCN deployment, which is commonly considered in the literature. Furthermore, both the coverage and the single user throughput performance will significantly benefit from the proposed scheme, if its average small cell density is kept identical to the uniform SCN deployment. This work demonstrates the benefits obtained from a simple non-uniform SCN deployment, thus highlighting the importance of deploying small cells selectively.

Resolution enhancement in neural networks with dynamical synapses

Conventionally, information is represented by spike rates in the neural system. Here, we consider the ability of temporally modulated activities in neuronal networks to carry information extra to spike rates. These temporal modulations, commonly known as population spikes, are due to the presence of synaptic depression in a neuronal network model. We discuss its relevance to an experiment on transparent motions in macaque monkeys by Treue et al. in 2000. They found that if the moving directions of objects are too close, the firing rate profile will be very similar to that with one direction. As the difference in the moving directions of objects is large enough, the neuronal system would respond in such a way that the network enhances the resolution in the moving directions of the objects. In this paper, we propose that this behavior can be reproduced by neural networks with dynamical synapses when there are multiple external inputs. We will demonstrate how resolution enhancement can be achieved, and discuss the conditions under which temporally modulated activities are able to enhance information processing performances in general.
