ShaDDR: Interactive Example-Based Geometry and Texture Generation via 3D Shape Detailization and Differentiable Rendering

We present ShaDDR, an example-based deep generative neural network which produces a high-resolution textured 3D shape through geometry detailization and conditional texture generation applied to an input coarse voxel shape. Trained on a small set of detailed and textured exemplar shapes, our method learns to detailize the geometry via multi-resolution voxel upsampling and generate textures on voxel surfaces via differentiable rendering against exemplar texture images from a few views. The generation is interactive, taking less than 1 second to produce a 3D model with voxel resolutions up to 512^3. The generated shape preserves the overall structure of the input coarse voxel model, while the style of the generated geometric details and textures can be manipulated through learned latent codes. In the experiments, we show that our method can generate higher-resolution shapes with plausible and improved geometric details and clean textures compared to prior works. Furthermore, we showcase the ability of our method to learn geometric details and textures from shapes reconstructed from real-world photos. In addition, we have developed an interactive modeling application to demonstrate the generalizability of our method to various user inputs and the controllability it offers, allowing users to interactively sculpt a coarse voxel shape to define the overall structure of the detailized 3D shape. Code and data are available at https://github.com/qiminchen/ShaDDR.

Make Your Brief Stroke Real and Stereoscopic: 3D-Aware Simplified Sketch to Portrait Generation

Creating the photo-realistic version of people sketched portraits is useful to various entertainment purposes. Existing studies only generate portraits in the 2D plane with fixed views, making the results less vivid. In this paper, we present Stereoscopic Simplified Sketch-to-Portrait (SSSP), which explores the possibility of creating Stereoscopic 3D-aware portraits from simple contour sketches by involving 3D generative models. Our key insight is to design sketch-aware constraints that can fully exploit the prior knowledge of a tri-plane-based 3D-aware generative model. Specifically, our designed region-aware volume rendering strategy and global consistency constraint further enhance detail correspondences during sketch encoding. Moreover, in order to facilitate the usage of layman users, we propose a Contour-to-Sketch module with vector quantized representations, so that easily drawn contours can directly guide the generation of 3D portraits. Extensive comparisons show that our method generates high-quality results that match the sketch. Our usability study verifies that our system is greatly preferred by user.

Ada3Diff: Defending against 3D Adversarial Point Clouds via Adaptive Diffusion

Deep 3D point cloud models are sensitive to adversarial attacks, which poses threats to safety-critical applications such as autonomous driving. Robust training and defend-by-denoising are typical strategies for defending adversarial perturbations. However, they either induce massive computational overhead or rely heavily upon specified priors, limiting generalized robustness against attacks of all kinds. To remedy it, this paper introduces a novel distortion-aware defense framework that can rebuild the pristine data distribution with a tailored intensity estimator and a diffusion model. To perform distortion-aware forward diffusion, we design a distortion estimation algorithm that is obtained by summing the distance of each point to the best-fitting plane of its local neighboring points, which is based on the observation of the local spatial properties of the adversarial point cloud. By iterative diffusion and reverse denoising, the perturbed point cloud under various distortions can be restored back to a clean distribution. This approach enables effective defense against adaptive attacks with varying noise budgets, enhancing the robustness of existing 3D deep recognition models.

ReliTalk: Relightable Talking Portrait Generation from a Single Video

Recent years have witnessed great progress in creating vivid audio-driven portraits from monocular videos. However, how to seamlessly adapt the created video avatars to other scenarios with different backgrounds and lighting conditions remains unsolved. On the other hand, existing relighting studies mostly rely on dynamically lighted or multi-view data, which are too expensive for creating video portraits. To bridge this gap, we propose ReliTalk, a novel framework for relightable audio-driven talking portrait generation from monocular videos. Our key insight is to decompose the portrait's reflectance from implicitly learned audio-driven facial normals and images. Specifically, we involve 3D facial priors derived from audio features to predict delicate normal maps through implicit functions. These initially predicted normals then take a crucial part in reflectance decomposition by dynamically estimating the lighting condition of the given video. Moreover, the stereoscopic face representation is refined using the identity-consistent loss under simulated multiple lighting conditions, addressing the ill-posed problem caused by limited views available from a single monocular video. Extensive experiments validate the superiority of our proposed framework on both real and synthetic datasets. Our code is released in https://github.com/arthur-qiu/ReliTalk.

Delicate Textured Mesh Recovery from NeRF via Adaptive Surface Refinement

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have constituted a remarkable breakthrough in image-based 3D reconstruction. However, their implicit volumetric representations differ significantly from the widely-adopted polygonal meshes and lack support from common 3D software and hardware, making their rendering and manipulation inefficient. To overcome this limitation, we present a novel framework that generates textured surface meshes from images. Our approach begins by efficiently initializing the geometry and view-dependency decomposed appearance with a NeRF. Subsequently, a coarse mesh is extracted, and an iterative surface refining algorithm is developed to adaptively adjust both vertex positions and face density based on re-projected rendering errors. We jointly refine the appearance with geometry and bake it into texture images for real-time rendering. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves superior mesh quality and competitive rendering quality.

ESRL: Efficient Sampling-based Reinforcement Learning for Sequence Generation

Applying Reinforcement Learning (RL) to sequence generation models enables the direct optimization of long-term rewards (\textit{e.g.,} BLEU and human feedback), but typically requires large-scale sampling over a space of action sequences. This is a computational challenge as presented by the practice of sequence generation problems, such as machine translation, where we often deal with a large action space (\textit{e.g.,} a vocabulary) and a long action sequence (\textit{e.g.,} a translation). In this work, we introduce two-stage sampling and dynamic sampling approaches to improve the sampling efficiency during training sequence generation models via RL. We experiment with our approaches on the traditional sequence generation tasks, including machine translation and abstractive summarization. Furthermore, we evaluate our approaches in RL from human feedback (RLHF) through training a large language model using the reward model. Experimental results show that the efficient sampling-based RL, referred to as ESRL, can outperform all baselines in terms of both training efficiency and memory consumption. Notably, ESRL yields consistent performance gains over the strong REINFORCE, minimum risk training, and proximal policy optimization methods.

Detecting Deepfake by Creating Spatio-Temporal Regularity Disruption

Despite encouraging progress in deepfake detection, generalization to unseen forgery types remains a significant challenge due to the limited forgery clues explored during training. In contrast, we notice a common phenomenon in deepfake: fake video creation inevitably disrupts the statistical regularity in original videos. Inspired by this observation, we propose to boost the generalization of deepfake detection by distinguishing the "regularity disruption" that does not appear in real videos. Specifically, by carefully examining the spatial and temporal properties, we propose to disrupt a real video through a Pseudo-fake Generator and create a wide range of pseudo-fake videos for training. Such practice allows us to achieve deepfake detection without using fake videos and improves the generalization ability in a simple and efficient manner. To jointly capture the spatial and temporal disruptions, we propose a Spatio-Temporal Enhancement block to learn the regularity disruption across space and time on our self-created videos. Through comprehensive experiments, our method exhibits excellent performance on several datasets.

Building an Invisible Shield for Your Portrait against Deepfakes

The issue of detecting deepfakes has garnered significant attention in the research community, with the goal of identifying facial manipulations for abuse prevention. Although recent studies have focused on developing generalized models that can detect various types of deepfakes, their performance is not always be reliable and stable, which poses limitations in real-world applications. Instead of learning a forgery detector, in this paper, we propose a novel framework - Integrity Encryptor, aiming to protect portraits in a proactive strategy. Our methodology involves covertly encoding messages that are closely associated with key facial attributes into authentic images prior to their public release. Unlike authentic images, where the hidden messages can be extracted with precision, manipulating the facial attributes through deepfake techniques can disrupt the decoding process. Consequently, the modified facial attributes serve as a mean of detecting manipulated images through a comparison of the decoded messages. Our encryption approach is characterized by its brevity and efficiency, and the resulting method exhibits a good robustness against typical image processing traces, such as image degradation and noise. When compared to baselines that struggle to detect deepfakes in a black-box setting, our method utilizing conditional encryption showcases superior performance when presented with a range of different types of forgeries. In experiments conducted on our protected data, our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods by a significant margin.

StyleSync: High-Fidelity Generalized and Personalized Lip Sync in Style-based Generator

Despite recent advances in syncing lip movements with any audio waves, current methods still struggle to balance generation quality and the model's generalization ability. Previous studies either require long-term data for training or produce a similar movement pattern on all subjects with low quality. In this paper, we propose StyleSync, an effective framework that enables high-fidelity lip synchronization. We identify that a style-based generator would sufficiently enable such a charming property on both one-shot and few-shot scenarios. Specifically, we design a mask-guided spatial information encoding module that preserves the details of the given face. The mouth shapes are accurately modified by audio through modulated convolutions. Moreover, our design also enables personalized lip-sync by introducing style space and generator refinement on only limited frames. Thus the identity and talking style of a target person could be accurately preserved. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in producing high-fidelity results on a variety of scenes. Euclidean Capacitated Vehicle Routing in Random Setting: A $1.55$-Approximation Algorithm

We study the unit-demand capacitated vehicle routing problem in the random setting of the Euclidean plane. The objective is to visit $n$ random terminals in a square using a set of tours of minimum total length, such that each tour visits the depot and at most $k$ terminals. We design an elegant algorithm combining the classical sweep heuristic and Arora's framework for the Euclidean traveling salesman problem [Journal of the ACM 1998]. We show that our algorithm is a polynomial-time approximation of ratio at most $1.55$ asymptotically almost surely. This improves on previous approximation ratios of $1.995$ due to Bompadre, Dror, and Orlin [Journal of Applied Probability 2007] and $1.915$ due to Mathieu and Zhou [Random Structures and Algorithms 2022]. In addition, we conjecture that, for any $\varepsilon>0$, our algorithm is a $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation asymptotically almost surely.

TokenMix: Rethinking Image Mixing for Data Augmentation in Vision Transformers

CutMix is a popular augmentation technique commonly used for training modern convolutional and transformer vision networks. It was originally designed to encourage Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) to focus more on an image's global context instead of local information, which greatly improves the performance of CNNs. However, we found it to have limited benefits for transformer-based architectures that naturally have a global receptive field. In this paper, we propose a novel data augmentation technique TokenMix to improve the performance of vision transformers. TokenMix mixes two images at token level via partitioning the mixing region into multiple separated parts. Besides, we show that the mixed learning target in CutMix, a linear combination of a pair of the ground truth labels, might be inaccurate and sometimes counter-intuitive. To obtain a more suitable target, we propose to assign the target score according to the content-based neural activation maps of the two images from a pre-trained teacher model, which does not need to have high performance. With plenty of experiments on various vision transformer architectures, we show that our proposed TokenMix helps vision transformers focus on the foreground area to infer the classes and enhances their robustness to occlusion, with consistent performance gains. Notably, we improve DeiT-T/S/B with +1% ImageNet top-1 accuracy. Besides, TokenMix enjoys longer training, which achieves 81.2% top-1 accuracy on ImageNet with DeiT-S trained for 400 epochs. Self-doping effect in confined copper selenide semiconducting quantum dots for efficient photoelectrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Self-doping can not only suppress the photogenerated charge recombination of semiconducting quantum dots by self-introducing trapping states within the bandgap, but also provide high-density catalytic active sites as the consequence of abundant non-saturated bonds associated with the defects. Here, we successfully prepared semiconducting copper selenide (CuSe) confined quantum dots with abundant vacancies and systematically investigated their photoelectrochemical characteristics. Photoluminescence characterizations reveal that the presence of vacancies reduces the emission intensity dramatically, indicating a low recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers due to the self-introduced trapping states within the bandgap. In addition, the ultra-low charge transfer resistance measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy implies the efficient charge transfer of CuSe semiconducting quantum dots-based photoelectrocatalysts, which is guaranteed by the high conductivity of their confined structure as revealed by room-temperature electrical transport measurements. Such high conductivity and low photogenerated charge carriers recombination rate, combined with high-density active sites and confined structure, guaranteeing the remarkable photoelectrocatalytic performance and stability as manifested by photoelectrocatalysis characterizations. This work promotes the development of semiconducting quantum dots-based photoelectrocatalysis and demonstrates CuSe semiconducting quantum confined catalysts as an advanced photoelectrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction.

TimesNet: Temporal 2D-Variation Modeling for General Time Series Analysis

Time series analysis is of immense importance in extensive applications, such as weather forecasting, anomaly detection, and action recognition. This paper focuses on temporal variation modeling, which is the common key problem of extensive analysis tasks. Previous methods attempt to accomplish this directly from the 1D time series, which is extremely challenging due to the intricate temporal patterns. Based on the observation of multi-periodicity in time series, we ravel out the complex temporal variations into the multiple intraperiod- and interperiod-variations. To tackle the limitations of 1D time series in representation capability, we extend the analysis of temporal variations into the 2D space by transforming the 1D time series into a set of 2D tensors based on multiple periods. This transformation can embed the intraperiod- and interperiod-variations into the columns and rows of the 2D tensors respectively, making the 2D-variations to be easily modeled by 2D kernels. Technically, we propose the TimesNet with TimesBlock as a task-general backbone for time series analysis. TimesBlock can discover the multi-periodicity adaptively and extract the complex temporal variations from transformed 2D tensors by a parameter-efficient inception block. Our proposed TimesNet achieves consistent state-of-the-art in five mainstream time series analysis tasks, including short- and long-term forecasting, imputation, classification, and anomaly detection. Image Protection for Robust Cropping Localization and Recovery

Existing image cropping detection schemes ignore that recovering the cropped-out contents can unveil the purpose of the behaved cropping attack. This paper presents \textbf{CLR}-Net, a novel image protection scheme addressing the combined challenge of image \textbf{C}ropping \textbf{L}ocalization and \textbf{R}ecovery. We first protect the original image by introducing imperceptible perturbations. Then, typical image post-processing attacks are simulated to erode the protected image. On the recipient's side, we predict the cropping mask and recover the original image. Besides, we propose a novel \textbf{F}ine-\textbf{G}rained generative \textbf{JPEG} simulator (FG-JPEG) as well as a feature alignment network to improve the real-world robustness. Comprehensive experiments prove that the quality of the recovered image and the accuracy of crop localization are both satisfactory.

Dual Memory Units with Uncertainty Regulation for Weakly Supervised Video Anomaly Detection

Learning discriminative features for effectively separating abnormal events from normality is crucial for weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WS-VAD) tasks. Existing approaches, both video and segment-level label oriented, mainly focus on extracting representations for anomaly data while neglecting the implication of normal data. We observe that such a scheme is sub-optimal, i.e., for better distinguishing anomaly one needs to understand what is a normal state, and may yield a higher false alarm rate. To address this issue, we propose an Uncertainty Regulated Dual Memory Units (UR-DMU) model to learn both the representations of normal data and discriminative features of abnormal data. To be specific, inspired by the traditional global and local structure on graph convolutional networks, we introduce a Global and Local Multi-Head Self Attention (GL-MHSA) module for the Transformer network to obtain more expressive embeddings for capturing associations in videos. Then, we use two memory banks, one additional abnormal memory for tackling hard samples, to store and separate abnormal and normal prototypes and maximize the margins between the two representations. Finally, we propose an uncertainty learning scheme to learn the normal data latent space, that is robust to noise from camera switching, object changing, scene transforming, etc. Extensive experiments on XD-Violence and UCF-Crime datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a sizable margin.

AnisoTag: 3D Printed Tag on 2D Surface via Reflection Anisotropy

In the past few years, the widespread use of 3D printing technology enables the growth of the market of 3D printed products. On Esty, a website focused on handmade items, hundreds of individual entrepreneurs are selling their 3D printed products. Inspired by the positive effects of machine-readable tags, like barcodes, on daily product marketing, we propose AnisoTag, a novel tagging method to encode data on the 2D surface of 3D printed objects based on reflection anisotropy. AnisoTag has an unobtrusive appearance and much lower extraction computational complexity, contributing to a lightweight low-cost tagging system for individual entrepreneurs. On AnisoTag, data are encoded by the proposed tool as reflective anisotropic microstructures, which would reflect distinct illumination patterns when irradiating by collimated laser. Based on it, we implement a real-time detection prototype with inexpensive hardware to determine the reflected illumination pattern and decode data according to their mapping. We evaluate AnisoTag with various 3D printer brands, filaments, and printing parameters, demonstrating its superior usability, accessibility, and reliability for practical usage.

Masked Lip-Sync Prediction by Audio-Visual Contextual Exploitation in Transformers

Previous studies have explored generating accurately lip-synced talking faces for arbitrary targets given audio conditions. However, most of them deform or generate the whole facial area, leading to non-realistic results. In this work, we delve into the formulation of altering only the mouth shapes of the target person. This requires masking a large percentage of the original image and seamlessly inpainting it with the aid of audio and reference frames. To this end, we propose the Audio-Visual Context-Aware Transformer (AV-CAT) framework, which produces accurate lip-sync with photo-realistic quality by predicting the masked mouth shapes. Our key insight is to exploit desired contextual information provided in audio and visual modalities thoroughly with delicately designed Transformers. Specifically, we propose a convolution-Transformer hybrid backbone and design an attention-based fusion strategy for filling the masked parts. It uniformly attends to the textural information on the unmasked regions and the reference frame. Then the semantic audio information is involved in enhancing the self-attention computation. Additionally, a refinement network with audio injection improves both image and lip-sync quality. Extensive experiments validate that our model can generate high-fidelity lip-synced results for arbitrary subjects.

Audio-Driven Co-Speech Gesture Video Generation

Co-speech gesture is crucial for human-machine interaction and digital entertainment. While previous works mostly map speech audio to human skeletons (e.g., 2D keypoints), directly generating speakers' gestures in the image domain remains unsolved. In this work, we formally define and study this challenging problem of audio-driven co-speech gesture video generation, i.e., using a unified framework to generate speaker image sequence driven by speech audio. Our key insight is that the co-speech gestures can be decomposed into common motion patterns and subtle rhythmic dynamics. To this end, we propose a novel framework, Audio-driveN Gesture vIdeo gEneration (ANGIE), to effectively capture the reusable co-speech gesture patterns as well as fine-grained rhythmic movements. To achieve high-fidelity image sequence generation, we leverage an unsupervised motion representation instead of a structural human body prior (e.g., 2D skeletons). Specifically, 1) we propose a vector quantized motion extractor (VQ-Motion Extractor) to summarize common co-speech gesture patterns from implicit motion representation to codebooks. 2) Moreover, a co-speech gesture GPT with motion refinement (Co-Speech GPT) is devised to complement the subtle prosodic motion details. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework renders realistic and vivid co-speech gesture video. Demo video and more resources can be found in: https://alvinliu0.github.io/projects/ANGIE
