SAC-GAN: Structure-Aware Image Composition

We introduce an end-to-end learning framework for image-to-image composition, aiming to plausibly compose an object represented as a cropped patch from an object image into a background scene image. As our approach emphasizes more on semantic and structural coherence of the composed images, rather than their pixel-level RGB accuracies, we tailor the input and output of our network with structure-aware features and design our network losses accordingly, with ground truth established in a self-supervised setting through the object cropping. Specifically, our network takes the semantic layout features from the input scene image, features encoded from the edges and silhouette in the input object patch, as well as a latent code as inputs, and generates a 2D spatial affine transform defining the translation and scaling of the object patch. The learned parameters are further fed into a differentiable spatial transformer network to transform the object patch into the target image, where our model is trained adversarially using an affine transform discriminator and a layout discriminator. We evaluate our network, coined SAC-GAN, for various image composition scenarios in terms of quality, composability, and generalizability of the composite images. Comparisons are made to state-of-the-art alternatives, including Instance Insertion, ST-GAN, CompGAN and PlaceNet, confirming superiority of our method.

SUB-Depth: Self-distillation and Uncertainty Boosting Self-supervised Monocular Depth Estimation

We propose SUB-Depth, a universal multi-task training framework for self-supervised monocular depth estimation (SDE). Depth models trained with SUB-Depth outperform the same models trained in a standard single-task SDE framework. By introducing an additional self-distillation task into a standard SDE training framework, SUB-Depth trains a depth network, not only to predict the depth map for an image reconstruction task, but also to distill knowledge from a trained teacher network with unlabelled data. To take advantage of this multi-task setting, we propose homoscedastic uncertainty formulations for each task to penalize areas likely to be affected by teacher network noise, or violate SDE assumptions. We present extensive evaluations on KITTI to demonstrate the improvements achieved by training a range of existing networks using the proposed framework, and we achieve state-of-the-art performance on this task. Additionally, SUB-Depth enables models to estimate uncertainty on depth output.

Real-time Neural Radiance Talking Portrait Synthesis via Audio-spatial Decomposition

While dynamic Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have shown success in high-fidelity 3D modeling of talking portraits, the slow training and inference speed severely obstruct their potential usage. In this paper, we propose an efficient NeRF-based framework that enables real-time synthesizing of talking portraits and faster convergence by leveraging the recent success of grid-based NeRF. Our key insight is to decompose the inherently high-dimensional talking portrait representation into three low-dimensional feature grids. Specifically, a Decomposed Audio-spatial Encoding Module models the dynamic head with a 3D spatial grid and a 2D audio grid. The torso is handled with another 2D grid in a lightweight Pseudo-3D Deformable Module. Both modules focus on efficiency under the premise of good rendering quality. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can generate realistic and audio-lips synchronized talking portrait videos, while also being highly efficient compared to previous methods.

Person Text-Image Matching via Text-Feature Interpretability Embedding and External Attack Node Implantation

Person text-image matching, also known as text based person search, aims to retrieve images of specific pedestrians using text descriptions. Although person text-image matching has made great research progress, existing methods still face two challenges. First, the lack of interpretability of text features makes it challenging to effectively align them with their corresponding image features. Second, the same pedestrian image often corresponds to multiple different text descriptions, and a single text description can correspond to multiple different images of the same identity. The diversity of text descriptions and images makes it difficult for a network to extract robust features that match the two modalities. To address these problems, we propose a person text-image matching method by embedding text-feature interpretability and an external attack node. Specifically, we improve the interpretability of text features by providing them with consistent semantic information with image features to achieve the alignment of text and describe image region features. To address the challenges posed by the diversity of text and the corresponding person images, we treat the variation caused by diversity to features as caused by perturbation information and propose a novel adversarial attack and defense method to solve it. In the model design, graph convolution is used as the basic framework for feature representation and the adversarial attacks caused by text and image diversity on feature extraction is simulated by implanting an additional attack node in the graph convolution layer to improve the robustness of the model against text and image diversity. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of text-pedestrian image matching over existing methods. The source code of the method is published at

A Tight $(1.5+ε)$-Approximation for Unsplittable Capacitated Vehicle Routing on Trees

In the unsplittable capacitated vehicle routing problem (UCVRP) on trees, we are given a rooted tree with edge weights and a subset of vertices of the tree called terminals. Each terminal is associated with a positive demand between 0 and 1. The goal is to find a minimum length collection of tours starting and ending at the root of the tree such that the demand of each terminal is covered by a single tour (i.e., the demand cannot be split), and the total demand of the terminals in each tour does not exceed the capacity of 1. For the special case when all terminals have equal demands, a long line of research culminated in a quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme [Jayaprakash and Salavatipour, SODA 2022] and a polynomial time approximation scheme [Mathieu and Zhou, ICALP 2022]. In this work, we study the general case when the terminals have arbitrary demands. Our main contribution is a polynomial time $(1.5+ε)$-approximation algorithm for the UCVRP on trees. This is the first improvement upon the 2-approximation algorithm more than 30 years ago [Labbé, Laporte, and Mercure, Operations Research, 1991]. Our approximation ratio is essentially best possible, since it is NP-hard to approximate the UCVRP on trees to better than a 1.5 factor.

Learning to Immunize Images for Tamper Localization and Self-Recovery

Digital images are vulnerable to nefarious tampering attacks such as content addition or removal that severely alter the original meaning. It is somehow like a person without protection that is open to various kinds of viruses. Image immunization (Imuge) is a technology of protecting the images by introducing trivial perturbation, so that the protected images are immune to the viruses in that the tampered contents can be auto-recovered. This paper presents Imuge+, an enhanced scheme for image immunization. By observing the invertible relationship between image immunization and the corresponding self-recovery, we employ an invertible neural network to jointly learn image immunization and recovery respectively in the forward and backward pass. We also introduce an efficient attack layer that involves both malicious tamper and benign image post-processing, where a novel distillation-based JPEG simulator is proposed for improved JPEG robustness. Our method achieves promising results in real-world tests where experiments show accurate tamper localization as well as high-fidelity content recovery. Additionally, we show superior performance on tamper localization compared to state-of-the-art schemes based on passive forensics.

Cover Reproducible Steganography via Deep Generative Models

Whereas cryptography easily arouses attacks by means of encrypting a secret message into a suspicious form, steganography is advantageous for its resilience to attacks by concealing the message in an innocent-looking cover signal. Minimal distortion steganography, one of the mainstream steganography frameworks, embeds messages while minimizing the distortion caused by the modification on the cover elements. Due to the unavailability of the original cover signal for the receiver, message embedding is realized by finding the coset leader of the syndrome function of steganographic codes migrated from channel coding, which is complex and has limited performance. Fortunately, deep generative models and the robust semantic of generated data make it possible for the receiver to perfectly reproduce the cover signal from the stego signal. With this advantage, we propose cover-reproducible steganography where the source coding, e.g., arithmetic coding, serves as the steganographic code. Specifically, the decoding process of arithmetic coding is used for message embedding and its encoding process is regarded as message extraction. Taking text-to-speech and text-to-image synthesis tasks as two examples, we illustrate the feasibility of cover-reproducible steganography. Steganalysis experiments and theoretical analysis are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed methods outperform the existing methods in most cases.

Probing compressed higgsinos with forward protons at the LHC

Supersymmetric models with nearly-degenerate light higgsinos provide a consistent solution to the naturalness problem under rigorous constraints from current experimental searches for sparticles. However, it is challenging to probe the compressed scenarios at collider experiments due to the hard-to-detect soft final states. To overcome this issue, strategies have been proposed to take advantage of the photon fusion along the ultraperipheral collision at the Large Hadron Collider, which are feasible with the forward detectors installed at the ATLAS and CMS detectors. In this paper, we demonstrate a search strategy for the chargino pair production via photon fusion at the 13 TeV LHC, realizing a good sensitivity that can exclude $m_{\tildeχ^{\pm}_{1}}$ up to 270 GeV (308 GeV) for a mass splitting $Δm(\tildeχ^{\pm}_{1},\tildeχ^{0}_{1})\in[1,15]$ GeV with an integrated luminosity of 100 fb$^{-1}$ (3 ab$^{-1}$) at 95% C.L.

Capacitated Vehicle Routing in Graphic Metrics

We study the capacitated vehicle routing problem in graphic metrics (graphic CVRP). Our main contribution is a new lower bound on the cost of an optimal solution. For graphic metrics, this lower bound is tight and significantly stronger than the well-known bound for general metrics. The proof of the new lower bound is simple and combinatorial. Using this lower bound, we analyze the approximation ratio of the classical iterated tour partitioning algorithm combined with the TSP algorithms for graphic metrics of Christofides [1976], of Mömke-Svensson [JACM 2016], and of Sebő-Vygen [Combinatorica 2014]. In particular, we obtain a 1.95-approximation for the graphic CVRP.

Delving into Sequential Patches for Deepfake Detection

Recent advances in face forgery techniques produce nearly visually untraceable deepfake videos, which could be leveraged with malicious intentions. As a result, researchers have been devoted to deepfake detection. Previous studies have identified the importance of local low-level cues and temporal information in pursuit to generalize well across deepfake methods, however, they still suffer from robustness problem against post-processings. In this work, we propose the Local- & Temporal-aware Transformer-based Deepfake Detection (LTTD) framework, which adopts a local-to-global learning protocol with a particular focus on the valuable temporal information within local sequences. Specifically, we propose a Local Sequence Transformer (LST), which models the temporal consistency on sequences of restricted spatial regions, where low-level information is hierarchically enhanced with shallow layers of learned 3D filters. Based on the local temporal embeddings, we then achieve the final classification in a global contrastive way. Extensive experiments on popular datasets validate that our approach effectively spots local forgery cues and achieves state-of-the-art performance.

An Approximation Algorithm for Distance-Constrained Vehicle Routing on Trees

In the Distance-constrained Vehicle Routing Problem (DVRP), we are given a graph with integer edge weights, a depot, a set of $n$ terminals, and a distance constraint $D$. The goal is to find a minimum number of tours starting and ending at the depot such that those tours together cover all the terminals and the length of each tour is at most $D$. The DVRP on trees is of independent interest, because it is equivalent to the virtual machine packing problem on trees studied by Sindelar et al. [SPAA'11]. We design a simple and natural approximation algorithm for the tree DVRP, parameterized by $\varepsilon >0$. We show that its approximation ratio is $α+ \varepsilon$, where $α\approx 1.691$, and in addition, that our analysis is essentially tight. The running time is polynomial in $n$ and $D$. The approximation ratio improves on the ratio of 2 due to Nagarajan and Ravi [Networks'12]. The main novelty of this paper lies in the analysis of the algorithm. It relies on a reduction from the tree DVRP to the bounded space online bin packing problem via a new notion of reduced length.

StyleSwap: Style-Based Generator Empowers Robust Face Swapping

Numerous attempts have been made to the task of person-agnostic face swapping given its wide applications. While existing methods mostly rely on tedious network and loss designs, they still struggle in the information balancing between the source and target faces, and tend to produce visible artifacts. In this work, we introduce a concise and effective framework named StyleSwap. Our core idea is to leverage a style-based generator to empower high-fidelity and robust face swapping, thus the generator's advantage can be adopted for optimizing identity similarity. We identify that with only minimal modifications, a StyleGAN2 architecture can successfully handle the desired information from both source and target. Additionally, inspired by the ToRGB layers, a Swapping-Driven Mask Branch is further devised to improve information blending. Furthermore, the advantage of StyleGAN inversion can be adopted. Particularly, a Swapping-Guided ID Inversion strategy is proposed to optimize identity similarity. Extensive experiments validate that our framework generates high-quality face swapping results that outperform state-of-the-art methods both qualitatively and quantitatively.

EAMM: One-Shot Emotional Talking Face via Audio-Based Emotion-Aware Motion Model

Although significant progress has been made to audio-driven talking face generation, existing methods either neglect facial emotion or cannot be applied to arbitrary subjects. In this paper, we propose the Emotion-Aware Motion Model (EAMM) to generate one-shot emotional talking faces by involving an emotion source video. Specifically, we first propose an Audio2Facial-Dynamics module, which renders talking faces from audio-driven unsupervised zero- and first-order key-points motion. Then through exploring the motion model's properties, we further propose an Implicit Emotion Displacement Learner to represent emotion-related facial dynamics as linearly additive displacements to the previously acquired motion representations. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that by incorporating the results from both modules, our method can generate satisfactory talking face results on arbitrary subjects with realistic emotion patterns.

Quasi-degenerate dark photon and dark matter

We introduce an $SU(2)_X^{}$ dark sector without any fermions and then realize a non-abelian kinetic mixing between the dark $SU(2)_X^{}$ gauge fields and the standard model $SU(2)_L^{}\times U(1)_Y^{}$ gauge fields. While one of the dark gauge bosons becomes a dark photon, the others can keep stable to form a dark matter particle. The nearly degenerate masses of dark photon and dark matter could be tested if the dark photon and the dark matter are both observed in the future.

PointCAT: Contrastive Adversarial Training for Robust Point Cloud Recognition

Notwithstanding the prominent performance achieved in various applications, point cloud recognition models have often suffered from natural corruptions and adversarial perturbations. In this paper, we delve into boosting the general robustness of point cloud recognition models and propose Point-Cloud Contrastive Adversarial Training (PointCAT). The main intuition of PointCAT is encouraging the target recognition model to narrow the decision gap between clean point clouds and corrupted point clouds. Specifically, we leverage a supervised contrastive loss to facilitate the alignment and uniformity of the hypersphere features extracted by the recognition model, and design a pair of centralizing losses with the dynamic prototype guidance to avoid these features deviating from their belonging category clusters. To provide the more challenging corrupted point clouds, we adversarially train a noise generator along with the recognition model from the scratch, instead of using gradient-based attack as the inner loop like previous adversarial training methods. Comprehensive experiments show that the proposed PointCAT outperforms the baseline methods and dramatically boosts the robustness of different point cloud recognition models, under a variety of corruptions including isotropic point noises, the LiDAR simulated noises, random point dropping and adversarial perturbations.

Unsplittable Euclidean Capacitated Vehicle Routing: A $(2+ε)$-Approximation Algorithm

In the unsplittable capacitated vehicle routing problem, we are given a metric space with a vertex called depot and a set of vertices called terminals. Each terminal is associated with a positive demand between 0 and 1. The goal is to find a minimum length collection of tours starting and ending at the depot such that the demand of each terminal is covered by a single tour (i.e., the demand cannot be split), and the total demand of the terminals in each tour does not exceed the capacity of 1. Our main result is a polynomial-time $(2+ε)$-approximation algorithm for this problem in the two-dimensional Euclidean plane, i.e., for the special case where the terminals and the depot are associated with points in the Euclidean plane and their distances are defined accordingly. This improves on recent work by Blauth, Traub, and Vygen [IPCO'21] and Friggstad, Mousavi, Rahgoshay, and Salavatipour [IPCO'22].

STC: Spatio-Temporal Contrastive Learning for Video Instance Segmentation

Video Instance Segmentation (VIS) is a task that simultaneously requires classification, segmentation, and instance association in a video. Recent VIS approaches rely on sophisticated pipelines to achieve this goal, including RoI-related operations or 3D convolutions. In contrast, we present a simple and efficient single-stage VIS framework based on the instance segmentation method CondInst by adding an extra tracking head. To improve instance association accuracy, a novel bi-directional spatio-temporal contrastive learning strategy for tracking embedding across frames is proposed. Moreover, an instance-wise temporal consistency scheme is utilized to produce temporally coherent results. Experiments conducted on the YouTube-VIS-2019, YouTube-VIS-2021, and OVIS-2021 datasets validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. We hope the proposed framework can serve as a simple and strong alternative for many other instance-level video association tasks.

StyleFaceV: Face Video Generation via Decomposing and Recomposing Pretrained StyleGAN3

Realistic generative face video synthesis has long been a pursuit in both computer vision and graphics community. However, existing face video generation methods tend to produce low-quality frames with drifted facial identities and unnatural movements. To tackle these challenges, we propose a principled framework named StyleFaceV, which produces high-fidelity identity-preserving face videos with vivid movements. Our core insight is to decompose appearance and pose information and recompose them in the latent space of StyleGAN3 to produce stable and dynamic results. Specifically, StyleGAN3 provides strong priors for high-fidelity facial image generation, but the latent space is intrinsically entangled. By carefully examining its latent properties, we propose our decomposition and recomposition designs which allow for the disentangled combination of facial appearance and movements. Moreover, a temporal-dependent model is built upon the decomposed latent features, and samples reasonable sequences of motions that are capable of generating realistic and temporally coherent face videos. Particularly, our pipeline is trained with a joint training strategy on both static images and high-quality video data, which is of higher data efficiency. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-the-art face video generation results both qualitatively and quantitatively. Notably, StyleFaceV is capable of generating realistic $1024\times1024$ face videos even without high-resolution training videos.
