Efficient option pricing with unary-based photonic computing chip and generative adversarial learning

In the modern financial industry system, the structure of products has become more and more complex, and the bottleneck constraint of classical computing power has already restricted the development of the financial industry. Here, we present a photonic chip that implements the unary approach to European option pricing, in combination with the quantum amplitude estimation algorithm, to achieve a quadratic speedup compared to classical Monte Carlo methods. The circuit consists of three modules: a module loading the distribution of asset prices, a module computing the expected payoff, and a module performing the quantum amplitude estimation algorithm to introduce speed-ups. In the distribution module, a generative adversarial network is embedded for efficient learning and loading of asset distributions, which precisely capture the market trends. This work is a step forward in the development of specialized photonic processors for applications in finance, with the potential to improve the efficiency and quality of financial services.

Enhancing Cell Proliferation and Migration by MIR-Carbonyl Vibrational Coupling: Insights from Transcriptome Profiling

Cell proliferation and migration highly relate to normal tissue self-healing, therefore it is highly significant for artificial controlling. Recently, vibrational strong coupling between biomolecules and Mid-infrared (MIR) light photons has been successfully used to modify in vitro bioreactions, neuronal signaling and even animal behavior. However, the synergistic effects from molecules to cells remains unclear, and the regulation of MIR on cells needs to be explained from the molecular level. Herein, the proliferation rate and migration capacity of fibroblasts were increased by 156% and 162.5%, respectively, by vibratory coupling of 5.6 micrometers photons with carbonyl groups in biomolecules. Through transcriptome sequencing analysis, the regulatory mechanism of infrared light in 5.6 micrometers was explained from the level of signal pathway and cell components. 5.6 micrometers optical high power lasers can regulate cell function through vibrational strong coupling while minimizing photothermal damage. This work not only sheds light on the non-thermal effect on MIR light-based on wound healing, but also provides new evidence to future frequency medicine.

The intelligent Photomultiplier Tubes for OSIRIS

The dimensions of liquid scintillator neutrino detectors have grown over the years. Thus, the analog cable length required for the readout increases. In consequence, the signal loss increases as well. With the intelligent Photomultiplier Tube this problem can be solved. The digitiser is moved as close as possible to the Photomultiplier Tube. This concept allows nearly lossless digitisation of the analog signal. Furthermore, a computing unit next to the analog-to-digital converter enables implementation of on-the-fly data processing and control algorithms. This paper presents the detailed concept and the performance of the intelligent Photomultiplier Tube.

Geometric Wavelet Scattering Networks on Compact Riemannian Manifolds

The Euclidean scattering transform was introduced nearly a decade ago to improve the mathematical understanding of convolutional neural networks. Inspired by recent interest in geometric deep learning, which aims to generalize convolutional neural networks to manifold and graph-structured domains, we define a geometric scattering transform on manifolds. Similar to the Euclidean scattering transform, the geometric scattering transform is based on a cascade of wavelet filters and pointwise nonlinearities. It is invariant to local isometries and stable to certain types of diffeomorphisms. Empirical results demonstrate its utility on several geometric learning tasks. Our results generalize the deformation stability and local translation invariance of Euclidean scattering, and demonstrate the importance of linking the used filter structures to the underlying geometry of the data.

Gradient-based adaptive wavelet de-noising method for photoacoustic imaging in vivo

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) has been applied to many biomedical applications over the past decades. However, the received PA signal usually suffers from poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Conventional solution of employing higher-power laser, or doing long-time signal averaging, may raise the system cost, time consumption, and tissue damage. Another strategy is de-noising algorithm design. In this paper, we propose a new de-noising method, termed gradient-based adaptive wavelet de-noising, which sets the energy gradient mutation point of low-frequency wavelet components as the threshold. We conducted simulation, ex vivo and in vivo experiments to validate the performance of the algorithm. The quality of de-noised PA image/signal by our proposed algorithm has improved by 20%-40%, in comparison to the traditional signal denoising algorithms, which produces better contrast and clearer details. The proposed de-noising method provides potential to improve the SNR of PA signal under single-shot low-power laser illumination for biomedical applications in vivo.

ClueReader: Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network for Multi-hop Machine Reading Comprehension

Multi-hop machine reading comprehension is a challenging task in natural language processing as it requires more reasoning ability across multiple documents. Spectral models based on graph convolutional networks have shown good inferring abilities and lead to competitive results. However, the analysis and reasoning of some are inconsistent with those of humans. Inspired by the concept of grandmother cells in cognitive neuroscience, we propose a heterogeneous graph attention network model named ClueReader to imitate the grandmother cell concept. The model is designed to assemble the semantic features in multi-level representations and automatically concentrate or alleviate information for reasoning through the attention mechanism. The name ClueReader is a metaphor for the pattern of the model: it regards the subjects of queries as the starting points of clues, takes the reasoning entities as bridge points, considers the latent candidate entities as grandmother cells, and the clues end up in candidate entities. The proposed model enables the visualization of the reasoning graph, making it possible to analyze the importance of edges connecting entities and the selectivity in the mention and candidate nodes, which is easier to comprehend empirically. Evaluations on the open-domain multi-hop reading dataset WikiHop and drug-drug interaction dataset MedHop proved the validity of ClueReader and showed the feasibility of its application of the model in the molecular biology domain.

Machine-Learning-based Colorectal Tissue Classification via Acoustic Resolution Photoacoustic Microscopy

Colorectal cancer is a deadly disease that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Early detection is crucial for saving lives, but traditional diagnostic methods such as colonoscopy and biopsy have limitations. Colonoscopy cannot provide detailed information within the tissues affected by cancer, while biopsy involves tissue removal, which can be painful and invasive. In order to improve diagnostic efficiency and reduce patient suffering, we studied machine-learningbased approach for colorectal tissue classification that uses acoustic resolution photoacoustic microscopy (ARPAM). With this tool, we were able to classify benign and malignant tissue using multiple machine learning methods. Our results were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach.

Regulating the Hydrophobic Domain in Peptide-Catecholamine Coassembled Nanostructures for Fluorescence Enhancement

Hydrophobic domains provide specific microenvironment for essential functional activities in life. Herein, we studied how the coassembling of peptides with catecholamines regulate the hydrophobic domain-containing nanostructures for fluorescence enhancement. By peptide encoding and coassembling with catecholamines of different hydrophilicities, a series of hierarchical assembling systems were constructed. In combination with molecular dynamics simulation, we experimentally discovered the hydrophobic domain of chromophore microenvironment regulates the fluorescence of coassembled nanostructures. Our results shed light on the rational design of fluorescent bio-coassembled nanoprobes for biomedical applications.

Understanding Graph Neural Networks with Generalized Geometric Scattering Transforms

The scattering transform is a multilayered wavelet-based deep learning architecture that acts as a model of convolutional neural networks. Recently, several works have introduced generalizations of the scattering transform for non-Euclidean settings such as graphs. Our work builds upon these constructions by introducing windowed and non-windowed geometric scattering transforms for graphs based upon a very general class of asymmetric wavelets. We show that these asymmetric graph scattering transforms have many of the same theoretical guarantees as their symmetric counterparts. As a result, the proposed construction unifies and extends known theoretical results for many of the existing graph scattering architectures. In doing so, this work helps bridge the gap between geometric scattering and other graph neural networks by introducing a large family of networks with provable stability and invariance guarantees. These results lay the groundwork for future deep learning architectures for graph-structured data that have learned filters and also provably have desirable theoretical properties.

Masked Path Modeling for Vision-and-Language Navigation

Vision-and-language navigation (VLN) agents are trained to navigate in real-world environments by following natural language instructions. A major challenge in VLN is the limited availability of training data, which hinders the models' ability to generalize effectively. Previous approaches have attempted to address this issue by introducing additional supervision during training, often requiring costly human-annotated data that restricts scalability. In this paper, we introduce a masked path modeling (MPM) objective, which pretrains an agent using self-collected data for downstream navigation tasks. Our proposed method involves allowing the agent to actively explore navigation environments without a specific goal and collect the paths it traverses. Subsequently, we train the agent on this collected data to reconstruct the original path given a randomly masked subpath. This way, the agent can actively accumulate a diverse and substantial amount of data while learning conditional action generation. To evaluate the effectiveness of our technique, we conduct experiments on various VLN datasets and demonstrate the versatility of MPM across different levels of instruction complexity. Our results exhibit significant improvements in success rates, with enhancements of 1.32\%, 1.05\%, and 1.19\% on the val-unseen split of the Room-to-Room, Room-for-Room, and Room-across-Room datasets, respectively. Furthermore, we conduct an analysis that highlights the potential for additional improvements when the agent is allowed to explore unseen environments prior to testing.

Selecting Learnable Training Samples is All DETRs Need in Crowded Pedestrian Detection

DEtection TRansformer (DETR) and its variants (DETRs) achieved impressive performance in general object detection. However, in crowded pedestrian detection, the performance of DETRs is still unsatisfactory due to the inappropriate sample selection method which results in more false positives. To settle the issue, we propose a simple but effective sample selection method for DETRs, Sample Selection for Crowded Pedestrians (SSCP), which consists of the constraint-guided label assignment scheme (CGLA) and the utilizability-aware focal loss (UAFL). Our core idea is to select learnable samples for DETRs and adaptively regulate the loss weights of samples based on their utilizability. Specifically, in CGLA, we proposed a new cost function to ensure that only learnable positive training samples are retained and the rest are negative training samples. Further, considering the utilizability of samples, we designed UAFL to adaptively assign different loss weights to learnable positive samples depending on their gradient ratio and IoU. Experimental results show that the proposed SSCP effectively improves the baselines without introducing any overhead in inference. Especially, Iter Deformable DETR is improved to 39.7(-2.0)% MR on Crowdhuman and 31.8(-0.4)% MR on Citypersons.

Demonstration of acoustic high-order Stiefel-Whitney semimetal in bilayer graphene sonic crystals

Recently, higher-order topological phases have endowed materials many exotic topological phases. For three-dimensional (3D) higher-order topologies, it hosts topologically protected 1D hinge states or 0D corner states, which extend the bulk-boundary correspondence of 3D topological phases. Meanwhile, the enrichment of group symmetries with exploration of projective symmetry algebras redefined the fundamentals of nontrivial topological matter with artificial gauge fields, leading to the discovery of new topological phases in classical wave systems. In this Letter, we construct an acoustic topological semimetal characterized by both the first and the second Stiefel-Whitney (SW) topological charges by utilizing the projective symmetry. Different from conventional high-order topologies with multiple bulk-boundary correspondences protected by different class topological invariants, acoustic high-order Stiefel-Whitney semimetal (HOSWS) has two different bulk-edge correspondences protected by only one class (SW class) topological invariant. Two types of topological hinge and surface states are embedded in bulk bands at the same frequency, featuring similar characteristics of bound states in the continuum (BICs). In experiments, we demonstrate the existence of high-quality surface state and hinge state at the interested frequency window with polarized intensity field distributions.

Understanding the Role of Triplet-triplet Annihilation in Non-fullerene Acceptor Organic Solar Cells

Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have enabled power conversion efficiencies exceeding 19% in organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the open-circuit voltage of OSCs remains low relative to their optical gap due to excessive non-radiative recombination, and this now limits performance. Here, we consider an important aspect of OSC design, namely management of the triplet exciton population formed after non-geminate charge recombination. By comparing the blends PM6:Y11 and PM6:Y6, we show that the greater crystallinity of the NFA domains in PM6:Y11 leads to a higher rate of triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA). We attribute this to the four times larger ground state dipole moment of Y11 versus Y6, which improves the long range NFA out-of-plane ordering. Since TTA converts a fraction of the non-emissive triplet states into bright singlet states, it has the potential to reduce non-radiative voltage losses. Through a kinetic analysis of the recombination processes under 1-Sun illumination, we provide a framework for determining the conditions under which TTA may improve OSC performance. If these could be satisfied, TTA has the potential to reduce non-radiative voltage losses by up to several tens of mV and could thus improve OSC performance.

SAWU-Net: Spatial Attention Weighted Unmixing Network for Hyperspectral Images

Hyperspectral unmixing is a critical yet challenging task in hyperspectral image interpretation. Recently, great efforts have been made to solve the hyperspectral unmixing task via deep autoencoders. However, existing networks mainly focus on extracting spectral features from mixed pixels, and the employment of spatial feature prior knowledge is still insufficient. To this end, we put forward a spatial attention weighted unmixing network, dubbed as SAWU-Net, which learns a spatial attention network and a weighted unmixing network in an end-to-end manner for better spatial feature exploitation. In particular, we design a spatial attention module, which consists of a pixel attention block and a window attention block to efficiently model pixel-based spectral information and patch-based spatial information, respectively. While in the weighted unmixing framework, the central pixel abundance is dynamically weighted by the coarse-grained abundances of surrounding pixels. In addition, SAWU-Net generates dynamically adaptive spatial weights through the spatial attention mechanism, so as to dynamically integrate surrounding pixels more effectively. Experimental results on real and synthetic datasets demonstrate the better accuracy and superiority of SAWU-Net, which reflects the effectiveness of the proposed spatial attention mechanism.

Multi-scale Adaptive Fusion Network for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

Removing the noise and improving the visual quality of hyperspectral images (HSIs) is challenging in academia and industry. Great efforts have been made to leverage local, global or spectral context information for HSI denoising. However, existing methods still have limitations in feature interaction exploitation among multiple scales and rich spectral structure preservation. In view of this, we propose a novel solution to investigate the HSI denoising using a Multi-scale Adaptive Fusion Network (MAFNet), which can learn the complex nonlinear mapping between clean and noisy HSI. Two key components contribute to improving the hyperspectral image denoising: A progressively multiscale information aggregation network and a co-attention fusion module. Specifically, we first generate a set of multiscale images and feed them into a coarse-fusion network to exploit the contextual texture correlation. Thereafter, a fine fusion network is followed to exchange the information across the parallel multiscale subnetworks. Furthermore, we design a co-attention fusion module to adaptively emphasize informative features from different scales, and thereby enhance the discriminative learning capability for denoising. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real HSI datasets demonstrate that the proposed MAFNet has achieved better denoising performance than other state-of-the-art techniques. Our codes are available at \verb'https://github.com/summitgao/MAFNet'.

Physical Knowledge Enhanced Deep Neural Network for Sea Surface Temperature Prediction

Traditionally, numerical models have been deployed in oceanography studies to simulate ocean dynamics by representing physical equations. However, many factors pertaining to ocean dynamics seem to be ill-defined. We argue that transferring physical knowledge from observed data could further improve the accuracy of numerical models when predicting Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Recently, the advances in earth observation technologies have yielded a monumental growth of data. Consequently, it is imperative to explore ways in which to improve and supplement numerical models utilizing the ever-increasing amounts of historical observational data. To this end, we introduce a method for SST prediction that transfers physical knowledge from historical observations to numerical models. Specifically, we use a combination of an encoder and a generative adversarial network (GAN) to capture physical knowledge from the observed data. The numerical model data is then fed into the pre-trained model to generate physics-enhanced data, which can then be used for SST prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method considerably enhances SST prediction performance when compared to several state-of-the-art baselines.

Photoacoustic digital tooth and image reconstruction of tooth root

Imaging of teeth is very important to doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases. The main imaging modality currently used is Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), which however suffers from ionizing radiation causing potential damage to human body. In this work, photoacoustic imaging is proposed for the imaging of tooth, specifically the tooth root. A photoacoustic digital phantom of the tooth is generated based on clinical CBCT data. The roots encased by alveolar bone are imaged by using the realistic photoacoustic digital phantom in the simulation study. Several image reconstruction algorithms are used and compared to remove the artifacts caused by heterogeneous acoustic velocity distribution.

Structure Embedded Nucleus Classification for Histopathology Images

Nuclei classification provides valuable information for histopathology image analysis. However, the large variations in the appearance of different nuclei types cause difficulties in identifying nuclei. Most neural network based methods are affected by the local receptive field of convolutions, and pay less attention to the spatial distribution of nuclei or the irregular contour shape of a nucleus. In this paper, we first propose a novel polygon-structure feature learning mechanism that transforms a nucleus contour into a sequence of points sampled in order, and employ a recurrent neural network that aggregates the sequential change in distance between key points to obtain learnable shape features. Next, we convert a histopathology image into a graph structure with nuclei as nodes, and build a graph neural network to embed the spatial distribution of nuclei into their representations. To capture the correlations between the categories of nuclei and their surrounding tissue patterns, we further introduce edge features that are defined as the background textures between adjacent nuclei. Lastly, we integrate both polygon and graph structure learning mechanisms into a whole framework that can extract intra and inter-nucleus structural characteristics for nuclei classification. Experimental results show that the proposed framework achieves significant improvements compared to the state-of-the-art methods.
