Joint Multi-frame Detection and Segmentation for Multi-cell Tracking

Tracking living cells in video sequence is difficult, because of cell morphology and high similarities between cells. Tracking-by-detection methods are widely used in multi-cell tracking. We perform multi-cell tracking based on the cell centroid detection, and the performance of the detector has high impact on tracking performance. In this paper, UNet is utilized to extract inter-frame and intra-frame spatio-temporal information of cells. Detection performance of cells in mitotic phase is improved by multi-frame input. Good detection results facilitate multi-cell tracking. A mitosis detection algorithm is proposed to detect cell mitosis and the cell lineage is built up. Another UNet is utilized to acquire primary segmentation. Jointly using detection and primary segmentation, cells can be fine segmented in highly dense cell population. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our method, and results show its state-of-the-art performance.

Parametric Convex Quadratic Relaxation of the Quadratic Knapsac Problem

We consider a parametric convex quadratic programming, CQP, relaxation for the quadratic knapsack problem, QKP. This relaxation maintains partial quadratic information from the original QKP by perturbing the objective function to obtain a concave quadratic term. The nonconcave part generated by the perturbation is then linearized by a standard approach that lifts the problem to the matrix space. We present a primal-dual interior point method to optimize the perturbation of the quadratic function, in a search for the tightest upper bound for the \QKPp. We prove that the same perturbation approach, when applied in the context of semidefinite programming, SDP, relaxations of the QKP, cannot improve the upper bound given by the corresponding linear \SDP relaxation. The result also applies to more general integer quadratic problems. Finally, we propose new valid inequalities on the lifted matrix variable, derived from cover and knapsack inequalities for the QKP, and present the separation problems to generate cuts for the current solution of the CQP relaxation. Our best bounds are obtained from alternating between optimizing the parametric quadratic relaxation over the perturbation and adding cutting planes generated by the valid inequalities proposed.

FPGA-based Binocular Image Feature Extraction and Matching System

Image feature extraction and matching is a fundamental but computation intensive task in machine vision. This paper proposes a novel FPGA-based embedded system to accelerate feature extraction and matching. It implements SURF feature point detection and BRIEF feature descriptor construction and matching. For binocular stereo vision, feature matching includes both tracking matching and stereo matching, which simultaneously provide feature point correspondences and parallax information. Our system is evaluated on a ZYNQ XC7Z045 FPGA. The result demonstrates that it can process binocular video data at a high frame rate (640$\times$480 @ 162fps). Moreover, an extensive test proves our system has robustness for image compression, blurring and illumination.

NMSSM with generalized deflected mirage mediation

We propose to generate a realistic soft SUSY breaking spectrum for Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with a generalized deflected mirage mediation scenario, in which additional Yukawa and gauge mediation contributions are included to deflect the renormalization group equation(RGE) trajectory. Based on the Wilsonian effective action obtained by integrating out the messengers, the NMSSM soft SUSY breaking spectrum can be given analytically at the messenger scale. We find that additional contributions to $m_S^2$ can possibly ameliorate the stringent constraints from the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and 125 GeV Higgs mass. Constraints from dark matter and fine-tuning are also discussed. The Barbieri-Giudice fine-tuning measure and electroweak fine-tuning measure in our scenario can be as low as ${\cal O}(1)$, which possibly indicates that our scenario is natural.

A 28/37/39GHz Multiband Linear Doherty Power Amplifier in Silicon for 5G Applications

This paper presents the first multiband mm-wave linear Doherty PA in silicon for broadband 5G applications. We introduce a new transformer-based on-chip Doherty power combiner, which can reduce the impedance transformation ratio in power back-off (PBO) and thus improve the bandwidth and power-combining efficiency. We also devise a "driver-PA co-design" method, which creates power-dependent uneven feeding in the Doherty PA and enhances the Doherty operation without any hardware overhead or bandwidth compromise. For the proof of concept, we implement a 28/37/39-GHz PA fully integrated in a standard 130-nm SiGe BiCMOS process, which occupies 1.8mm2. The PA achieves a 52% -3-dB small-signal S21 bandwidth and a 40% -1-dB large-signal saturated output power (Psat) bandwidth. At 28/37/39GHz, the PA achieves +16.8/+17.1/+17-dBm Psat, +15.2/+15.5/+15.4-dBm P1dB, and superior 1.72/1.92/1.62 times efficiency enhancement over class-B operation at 5.9/6/6.7-dB PBO. Moreover, the PA demonstrates multi-Gb/s data rates with excellent efficiency and linearity for 64QAM in all the three 5G bands. This PA advances the state of the art for Doherty, wideband, and 5G silicon PAs in mm-wave bands. It supports drop-in upgrade for current PAs in existing mm-wave systems and opens doors to compact system solutions for future multiband 5G massive MIMO and phased-array platforms.

Minimal Yukawa deflection of AMSB from the Kahler potential

We propose a minimal Yukawa deflection scenario of AMSB from the Kahler potential through the Higgs-messenger mixing. Salient features of this scenario are discussed and realistic MSSM spectrum can be obtained. Such a scenario, which are very predictive, can solve the tachyonic slepton problem with less messenger species. Numerical results indicate that the LOSPs predicted by this scenario can not be good DM candidates. So it is desirable to extend this scenario with a Peccei-Quinn sector to solve the strong CP problem and at the same time provide new DM candidates. We propose a way to obtain a light axino mass in SUSY KSVZ axion model with Yukawa deflected anomaly mediation SUSY breaking mechanism. The axino can possibly be the LSP and act as a good DM candidate.

Learning Cascaded Siamese Networks for High Performance Visual Tracking

Visual tracking is one of the most challenging computer vision problems. In order to achieve high performance visual tracking in various negative scenarios, a novel cascaded Siamese network is proposed and developed based on two different deep learning networks: a matching subnetwork and a classification subnetwork. The matching subnetwork is a fully convolutional Siamese network. According to the similarity score between the exemplar image and the candidate image, it aims to search possible object positions and crop scaled candidate patches. The classification subnetwork is designed to further evaluate the cropped candidate patches and determine the optimal tracking results based on the classification score. The matching subnetwork is trained offline and fixed online, while the classification subnetwork performs stochastic gradient descent online to learn more target-specific information. To improve the tracking performance further, an effective classification subnetwork update method based on both similarity and classification scores is utilized for updating the classification subnetwork. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in recent benchmarks.

MetaPred: Meta-Learning for Clinical Risk Prediction with Limited Patient Electronic Health Records

In recent years, increasingly augmentation of health data, such as patient Electronic Health Records (EHR), are becoming readily available. This provides an unprecedented opportunity for knowledge discovery and data mining algorithms to dig insights from them, which can, later on, be helpful to the improvement of the quality of care delivery. Predictive modeling of clinical risk, including in-hospital mortality, hospital readmission, chronic disease onset, condition exacerbation, etc., from patient EHR, is one of the health data analytic problems that attract most of the interests. The reason is not only because the problem is important in clinical settings, but also there are challenges working with EHR such as sparsity, irregularity, temporality, etc. Different from applications in other domains such as computer vision and natural language processing, the labeled data samples in medicine (patients) are relatively limited, which creates lots of troubles for effective predictive model learning, especially for complicated models such as deep learning. In this paper, we propose MetaPred, a meta-learning for clinical risk prediction from longitudinal patient EHRs. In particular, in order to predict the target risk where there are limited data samples, we train a meta-learner from a set of related risk prediction tasks which learns how a good predictor is learned. The meta-learned can then be directly used in target risk prediction, and the limited available samples can be used for further fine-tuning the model performance. The effectiveness of MetaPred is tested on a real patient EHR repository from Oregon Health & Science University. We are able to demonstrate that with CNN and RNN as base predictors, MetaPred can achieve much better performance for predicting target risk with low resources comparing with the predictor trained on the limited samples available for this risk.

Machine Learning Topological Phases with a Solid-state Quantum Simulator

We report an experimental demonstration of a machine learning approach to identify exotic topological phases, with a focus on the three-dimensional chiral topological insulators. We show that the convolutional neural networks---a class of deep feed-forward artificial neural networks with widespread applications in machine learning---can be trained to successfully identify different topological phases protected by chiral symmetry from experimental raw data generated with a solid-state quantum simulator. Our results explicitly showcase the exceptional power of machine learning in the experimental detection of topological phases, which paves a way to study rich topological phenomena with the machine learning toolbox.

Multi-View Graph Convolutional Network and Its Applications on Neuroimage Analysis for Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases that affects tens of millions of Americans. PD is highly progressive and heterogeneous. Quite a few studies have been conducted in recent years on predictive or disease progression modeling of PD using clinical and biomarkers data. Neuroimaging, as another important information source for neurodegenerative disease, has also arisen considerable interests from the PD community. In this paper, we propose a deep learning method based on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) for fusing multiple modalities of brain images in relationship prediction which is useful for distinguishing PD cases from controls. On Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) cohort, our approach achieved $0.9537\pm 0.0587$ AUC, compared with $0.6443\pm 0.0223$ AUC achieved by traditional approaches such as PCA.

Integrative Analysis of Patient Health Records and Neuroimages via Memory-based Graph Convolutional Network

With the arrival of the big data era, more and more data are becoming readily available in various real-world applications and those data are usually highly heterogeneous. Taking computational medicine as an example, we have both Electronic Health Records (EHR) and medical images for each patient. For complicated diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, both EHR and neuroimaging information are very important for disease understanding because they contain complementary aspects of the disease. However, EHR and neuroimage are completely different. So far the existing research has been mainly focusing on one of them. In this paper, we proposed a framework, Memory-Based Graph Convolution Network (MemGCN), to perform integrative analysis with such multi-modal data. Specifically, GCN is used to extract useful information from the patients' neuroimages. The information contained in the patient EHRs before the acquisition of each brain image is captured by a memory network because of its sequential nature. The information contained in each brain image is combined with the information read out from the memory network to infer the disease state at the image acquisition timestamp. To further enhance the analytical power of MemGCN, we also designed a multi-hop strategy that allows multiple reading and updating on the memory can be performed at each iteration. We conduct experiments using the patient data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) with the task of classification of Parkinson's Disease (PD) cases versus controls. We demonstrate that superior classification performance can be achieved with our proposed framework, comparing with existing approaches involving a single type of data.

Graph Neural Reasoning for 2-Quantified Boolean Formula Solvers

In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of learning GNN (Graph Neural Network) based solvers and GNN-based heuristics for specified QBF (Quantified Boolean Formula) problems. We design and evaluate several GNN architectures for 2QBF formulae, and conjecture that GNN has limitations in learning 2QBF solvers. Then we show how to learn a heuristic CEGAR 2QBF solver. We further explore generalizing GNN-based heuristics to larger unseen instances, and uncover some interesting challenges. In summary, this paper provides a comprehensive surveying view of applying GNN-embeddings to specified QBF solvers, and aims to offer guidance in applying ML to more complicated symbolic reasoning problems.

Temporal Unet: Sample Level Human Action Recognition using WiFi

Human doing actions will result in WiFi distortion, which is widely explored for action recognition, such as the elderly fallen detection, hand sign language recognition, and keystroke estimation. As our best survey, past work recognizes human action by categorizing one complete distortion series into one action, which we term as series-level action recognition. In this paper, we introduce a much more fine-grained and challenging action recognition task into WiFi sensing domain, i.e., sample-level action recognition. In this task, every WiFi distortion sample in the whole series should be categorized into one action, which is a critical technique in precise action localization, continuous action segmentation, and real-time action recognition. To achieve WiFi-based sample-level action recognition, we fully analyze approaches in image-based semantic segmentation as well as in video-based frame-level action recognition, then propose a simple yet efficient deep convolutional neural network, i.e., Temporal Unet. Experimental results show that Temporal Unet achieves this novel task well. Codes have been made publicly available at https://github.com/geekfeiw/WiSLAR.

Non-Majorana Origin of the Half-Quantized Conductance Plateau in Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator and Superconductor Hybrid Structures

A quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator coupled to an s-wave superconductor is predicted to harbor a topological superconducting phase, the elementary excitations of which (i.e. Majorana fermions) can form topological qubits upon non-Abelian braiding operations. A recent transport experiment interprets the half-quantized two-terminal conductance plateau as the presence of chiral Majorana fermions in a millimeter-size QAH-Nb hybrid structure. However, there are concerns about this interpretation because non-Majorana mechanisms can also generate similar signatures, especially in a disordered QAH system. Here, we fabricated QAH-Nb hybrid structures and studied the QAH-Nb contact transparency and its effect on the corresponding two-terminal conductance. When the QAH film is tuned to the metallic regime by electric gating, we observed a sharp zero-bias enhancement in the differential conductance, up to 80% at zero magnetic field. This large enhancement suggests high probability of Andreev reflection and transparent interface between the magnetic topological insulator (TI) and Nb layers. When the magnetic TI film is in the QAH state with well-aligned magnetization, we found that the two-terminal conductance is always half-quantized. Our experiment provides a comprehensive understanding of the superconducting proximity effect observed in QAH-superconductor hybrid structures and shows that the half-quantized conductance plateau is unlikely to be induced by chiral Majorana fermions.

The inviscid limit for the Navier-Stokes equations with data analytic only near the boundary

We address the inviscid limit for the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space, with initial datum that is analytic only close to the boundary of the domain, and has finite Sobolev regularity in the complement. We prove that for such data the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations converges in the vanishing viscosity limit to the solution of the Euler equation, on a constant time interval.

Band gap and band alignment prediction of nitride based semiconductors using machine learning

Nitride has been drawing much attention due to its wide range of applications in optoelectronics and remains plenty of room for materials design and discovery. Here, a large set of nitrides have been designed, with their band gap and alignment being studied by first-principles calculations combined with machine learning. Band gap and band offset against wurtzite GaN accurately calculated by the combination of screened hybrid functional of HSE and DFT-PBE were used to train and test machine learning models. After comparison among different techniques of machine learning, when elemental properties are taken as features, support vector regression (SVR) with radial kernel performs best for predicting both band gap and band offset with prediction root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.298 eV and 0.183 eV, respectively. The former is within HSE calculation uncertainty and the latter is small enough to provide reliable predictions. Additionally, when band gap calculated by DFT-PBE was added into the feature space, band gap prediction RMSE decreases to 0.099 eV. Through a feature engineering algorithm, elemental feature space based band gap prediction RMSE further drops by around 0.005 eV and the relative importance of elemental properties for band gap prediction was revealed. Finally, band gap and band offset of all designed nitrides were predicted and two trends were noticed that as the number of cation types increases, band gap tends to narrow down while band offset tends to go up. The predicted results will be a useful guidance for precise investigation on nitride engineering.

Feature Learning Viewpoint of AdaBoost and a New Algorithm

The AdaBoost algorithm has the superiority of resisting overfitting. Understanding the mysteries of this phenomena is a very fascinating fundamental theoretical problem. Many studies are devoted to explaining it from statistical view and margin theory. In this paper, we illustrate it from feature learning viewpoint, and propose the AdaBoost+SVM algorithm, which can explain the resistant to overfitting of AdaBoost directly and easily to understand. Firstly, we adopt the AdaBoost algorithm to learn the base classifiers. Then, instead of directly weighted combination the base classifiers, we regard them as features and input them to SVM classifier. With this, the new coefficient and bias can be obtained, which can be used to construct the final classifier. We explain the rationality of this and illustrate the theorem that when the dimension of these features increases, the performance of SVM would not be worse, which can explain the resistant to overfitting of AdaBoost.

Can WiFi Estimate Person Pose?

WiFi human sensing has achieved great progress in indoor localization, activity classification, etc. Retracing the development of these work, we have a natural question: can WiFi devices work like cameras for vision applications? In this paper We try to answer this question by exploring the ability of WiFi on estimating single person pose. We use a 3-antenna WiFi sender and a 3-antenna receiver to generate WiFi data. Meanwhile, we use a synchronized camera to capture person videos for corresponding keypoint annotations. We further propose a fully convolutional network (FCN), termed WiSPPN, to estimate single person pose from the collected data and annotations. Evaluation on over 80k images (16 sites and 8 persons) replies aforesaid question with a positive answer. Codes have been made publicly available at https://github.com/geekfeiw/WiSPPN.
