Boron isotope effect on the thermal conductivity of boron arsenide single crystals

Boron arsenide (BAs) with a zinc blende structure has recently been discovered to exhibit unusual and ultrahigh thermal conductivity (k), providing a new outlook for research on BAs and other high thermal conductivity materials. Technology for BAs crystal growth has been continuously improving, however, the influence of boron isotopes, pure or mixed, on the thermal conductivity in BAs is still not completely clear. Here we report detailed studies on the growth of single crystals of BAs with different isotopic ratios and demonstrate that the k of isotopically pure BAs is at least 10% higher than that of BAs grown from natural B. Raman spectroscopy characterization shows differences in scattering among various BAs samples. The presented results will be helpful in guiding further studies on the influence of isotopes on optimizing k in BAs.

Demystifying Differentiable Programming: Shift/Reset the Penultimate Backpropagator

Deep learning has seen tremendous success over the past decade in computer vision, machine translation, and gameplay. This success rests in crucial ways on gradient-descent optimization and the ability to learn parameters of a neural network by backpropagating observed errors. However, neural network architectures are growing increasingly sophisticated and diverse, which motivates an emerging quest for even more general forms of differentiable programming, where arbitrary parameterized computations can be trained by gradient descent. In this paper, we take a fresh look at automatic differentiation (AD) techniques, and especially aim to demystify the reverse-mode form of AD that generalizes backpropagation in neural networks. We uncover a tight connection between reverse-mode AD and delimited continuations, which permits implementing reverse-mode AD purely via operator overloading and without any auxiliary data structures. We further show how this formulation of AD can be fruitfully combined with multi-stage programming (staging), leading to a highly efficient implementation that combines the performance benefits of deep learning frameworks based on explicit reified computation graphs (e.g., TensorFlow) with the expressiveness of pure library approaches (e.g., PyTorch).

On the existence of a short pivoting sequence for a linear program

Pivoting methods are of vital importance for linear programming, the simplex method being the by far most well-known. In this paper, a primal-dual pair of linear programs in canonical form is considered. We show that there exists a sequence of pivots, whose length is bounded by the minimum dimension of the constraint matrix, such that the pivot creates a nonsingular submatrix of the constraint matrix which increases by one row and one column at each iteration. Solving a pair of linear equations for each of these submatrices generates a sequence of optimal solutions of a primal-dual pair of linear programs of increasing dimensions, originating at the origin. The optimal solutions to the original primal-dual pair of linear programs are obtained in the final step. It is only an existence result, we have not been able to generate any rules based on properties of the problem to generate the sequence. The result is obtained by a decomposition of the final basis matrix.

Research on Autonomous Maneuvering Decision of UCAV based on Approximate Dynamic Programming

Unmanned aircraft systems can perform some more dangerous and difficult missions than manned aircraft systems. In some highly complicated and changeable tasks, such as air combat, the maneuvering decision mechanism is required to sense the combat situation accurately and make the optimal strategy in real-time. This paper presents a formulation of a 3-D one-on-one air combat maneuvering problem and an approximate dynamic programming approach for computing an optimal policy on autonomous maneuvering decision making. The aircraft learns combat strategies in a Reinforcement Leaning method, while sensing the environment, taking available maneuvering actions and getting feedback reward signals. To solve the problem of dimensional explosion in the air combat, the proposed method is implemented through feature selection, trajectory sampling, function approximation and Bellman backup operation in the air combat simulation environment. This approximate dynamic programming approach provides a fast response to a rapidly changing tactical situation, learns in long-term planning, without any explicitly coded air combat rule base.

Do the current astronomical observations exclude the existence of non-strange quark stars?

As is pointed out in a recent work (Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 222001), quark matter may not be strange. Inspired by this argument, we use a new self-consistent mean field approximation method to study the equation of state of cold dense matter within the framework of the two-flavor NJL model. Then the mass-radius relationship of two-flavor pure quark stars is studied. In the new self-consistent mean field approximation method we introduced, there is a free parameter $α$, which reflects the weight of different interaction channels. In principal, $α$ should be determined by experiments rather than the self-consistent mean field approximation itself. In this paper, thus, the influence of the variation of $α$ on the critical chemical potential of chiral phase transition and the stiffness of the EOS are thoroughly explored. It is found that the stiffness of EOS can be increased greatly to support a two-solar-mass pure quark star when $α$ is greater than 0.95. This means that current theoretical calculations and astronomical observations cannot rule out the possibility of a two-flavor pure quark star.

Electromagnetic modeling of near-field phase-shifting contact lithography with broadband ultraviolet illumination

Near-field phase-shifting contact lithography is modeled to characterize electromagnetic absorption in a photoresist layer with one face in contact with a quartz binary phase-shift mask. The broadband ultraviolet illumination is represented as a frequency-spectrum of normally incident plane waves. A rigorous coupled-wave analysis is carried out to determine the absorption spectrum of the photoresist layer. The specific absorption rate in the photoresist layer is calculated and examined in relation to the geometric parameters. Columnar features in the photoresist layer are of higher quality on broadband illumination in contrast to monochromatic illumination, in conformity with some recent experimental results. Feature resolution and profile are noticeably affected by the depth of the grooves in the phase-shift mask. Ideally, the feature linewidth can be less than about 100 nm for broadband illumination in the transverse-magnetic mode. These conclusions are subject to modification by the photochemistry-wavelength characteristics of the photoresist.

Third method for generation of spectral holes in chiral sculptured thin films

The introduction of either a central layer defect or a central twist defect in a periodic structurally chiral material generates circular-polarization-sensitive spectral holes in the remittance spectrums for normally incident plane waves. We propose and theoretically establish here the third method to generate such spectral holes using two-section chiral sculptured thin films (STFs). Both sections of the proposed device have the same periodicity and handedness, but their dielectric properties are different and related in a specific way. The concept of pseudoisotropy is highly relevant for the production of the proposed device.

SE2Net: Siamese Edge-Enhancement Network for Salient Object Detection

Deep convolutional neural network significantly boosted the capability of salient object detection in handling large variations of scenes and object appearances. However, convolution operations seek to generate strong responses on individual pixels, while lack the ability to maintain the spatial structure of objects. Moreover, the down-sampling operations, such as pooling and striding, lose spatial details of the salient objects. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective Siamese Edge-Enhancement Network (SE2Net) to preserve the edge structure for salient object detection. Specifically, a novel multi-stage siamese network is built to aggregate the low-level and high-level features, and parallelly estimate the salient maps of edges and regions. As a result, the predicted regions become more accurate by enhancing the responses at edges, and the predicted edges become more semantic by suppressing the false positives in background. After the refined salient maps of edges and regions are produced by the SE2Net, an edge-guided inference algorithm is designed to further improve the resulting salient masks along the predicted edges. Extensive experiments on several benchmark datasets have been conducted, which show that our method is superior than the state-of-the-art approaches.

Rogue waves, self-similar statistics, and self-similar intermediate asymptotics

We advance a statistical theory of extreme event emergence in random nonlinear wave systems with self-similar intermediate asymptotics. We show, within the framework of a generic (1 + 1)D nonlinear Schrodinger equation with linear gain, that extreme events and even rogue waves in weakly nonlinear, statistical open systems emerge as parabolic-shape giant fluctuations in the self-similar asymptotic propagation regime. We analytically demonstrate the self-similar structure of the non-Gaussian statistics of emergent rogue waves and validate our results with numerical simulations. Our results shed new light on generic statistical features of extreme events in nonlinear open systems with self-similar intermediate asymptotics.

SFSegNet: Parse Freehand Sketches using Deep Fully Convolutional Networks

Parsing sketches via semantic segmentation is attractive but challenging, because (i) free-hand drawings are abstract with large variances in depicting objects due to different drawing styles and skills; (ii) distorting lines drawn on the touchpad make sketches more difficult to be recognized; (iii) the high-performance image segmentation via deep learning technologies needs enormous annotated sketch datasets during the training stage. In this paper, we propose a Sketch-target deep FCN Segmentation Network(SFSegNet) for automatic free-hand sketch segmentation, labeling each sketch in a single object with multiple parts. SFSegNet has an end-to-end network process between the input sketches and the segmentation results, composed of 2 parts: (i) a modified deep Fully Convolutional Network(FCN) using a reweighting strategy to ignore background pixels and classify which part each pixel belongs to; (ii) affine transform encoders that attempt to canonicalize the shaking strokes. We train our network with the dataset that consists of 10,000 annotated sketches, to find an extensively applicable model to segment stokes semantically in one ground truth. Extensive experiments are carried out and segmentation results show that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art networks.

Deep Comprehensive Correlation Mining for Image Clustering

Recent developed deep unsupervised methods allow us to jointly learn representation and cluster unlabelled data. These deep clustering methods mainly focus on the correlation among samples, e.g., selecting high precision pairs to gradually tune the feature representation, which neglects other useful correlations. In this paper, we propose a novel clustering framework, named deep comprehensive correlation mining(DCCM), for exploring and taking full advantage of various kinds of correlations behind the unlabeled data from three aspects: 1) Instead of only using pair-wise information, pseudo-label supervision is proposed to investigate category information and learn discriminative features. 2) The features' robustness to image transformation of input space is fully explored, which benefits the network learning and significantly improves the performance. 3) The triplet mutual information among features is presented for clustering problem to lift the recently discovered instance-level deep mutual information to a triplet-level formation, which further helps to learn more discriminative features. Extensive experiments on several challenging datasets show that our method achieves good performance, e.g., attaining $62.3\%$ clustering accuracy on CIFAR-10, which is $10.1\%$ higher than the state-of-the-art results.

Method of Contraction-Expansion (MOCE) for Simultaneous Inference in Linear Models

Simultaneous inference after model selection is of critical importance to address scientific hypotheses involving a set of parameters. In this paper, we consider high-dimensional linear regression model in which a regularization procedure such as LASSO is applied to yield a sparse model. To establish a simultaneous post-model selection inference, we propose a method of contraction and expansion (MOCE) along the line of debiasing estimation that enables us to balance the bias-and-variance trade-off so that the super-sparsity assumption may be relaxed. We establish key theoretical results for the proposed MOCE procedure from which the expanded model can be selected with theoretical guarantees and simultaneous confidence regions can be constructed by the joint asymptotic normal distribution. In comparison with existing methods, our proposed method exhibits stable and reliable coverage at a nominal significance level with substantially less computational burden, and thus it is trustworthy for its application in solving real-world problems.

WiPIN: Operation-free Passive Person Identification Using Wi-Fi Signals

Wi-Fi signals-based person identification attracts increasing attention in the booming Internet-of-Things era mainly due to its pervasiveness and passiveness. Most previous work applies gaits extracted from WiFi distortions caused by the person walking to achieve the identification. However, to extract useful gait, a person must walk along a pre-defined path for several meters, which requires user high collaboration and increases identification time overhead, thus limiting use scenarios. Moreover, gait based work has severe shortcoming in identification performance, especially when the user volume is large. In order to eliminate the above limitations, in this paper, we present an operation-free person identification system, namely WiPIN, that requires least user collaboration and achieves good performance. WiPIN is based on an entirely new insight that Wi-Fi signals would carry person body information when propagating through the body, which is potentially discriminated for person identification. Then we demonstrate the feasibility on commodity off-the-shelf Wi-Fi devices by well-designed signal pre-processing, feature extraction, and identity matching algorithms. Results show that WiPIN achieves 92% identification accuracy over 30 users, high robustness to various experimental settings, and low identifying time overhead, i.e., less than 300ms.

Joint Activity Recognition and Indoor Localization with WiFi Fingerprints

Recent years have witnessed the rapid development in the research topic of WiFi sensing that automatically senses human with commercial WiFi devices. This work falls into two major categories, i.e., the activity recognition and the indoor localization. The former work utilizes WiFi devices to recognize human daily activities such as smoking, walking, and dancing. The latter one, indoor localization, can be used for indoor navigation, location-based services, and through-wall surveillance. The key rationale behind this type of work is that people behaviors can influence the WiFi signal propagation and introduce specific patterns into WiFi signals, called WiFi fingerprints, which can be further explored to identify human activities and locations. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework for joint activity recognition and indoor localization task using WiFi Channel State Information~(CSI) fingerprints. More precisely, we develop a system running standard IEEE 802.11n WiFi protocol, and collect more than 1400 CSI fingerprints on 6 activities at 16 indoor locations. Then we propose a dual-task convolutional neural network with 1-dimensional convolutional layers for the joint task of activity recognition and indoor localization. Experimental results and ablation study show that our approach achieves good performances in this joint WiFi sensing task. CU-Net: Cascaded U-Net with Loss Weighted Sampling for Brain Tumor Segmentation

This paper proposes a novel cascaded U-Net for brain tumor segmentation. Inspired by the distinct hierarchical structure of brain tumor, we design a cascaded deep network framework, in which the whole tumor is segmented firstly and then the tumor internal substructures are further segmented. Considering that the increase of the network depth brought by cascade structures leads to a loss of accurate localization information in deeper layers, we construct many skip connections to link features at the same resolution and transmit detailed information from shallow layers to the deeper layers. Then we present a loss weighted sampling (LWS) scheme to eliminate the issue of imbalanced data during training the network. Experimental results on BraTS 2017 data show that our architecture framework outperforms the state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms, especially in terms of segmentation sensitivity.

Non-technical Loss Detection with Statistical Profile Images Based on Semi-supervised Learning

In order to keep track of the operational state of power grid, the world's largest sensor systems, smart grid, was built by deploying hundreds of millions of smart meters. Such system makes it possible to discover and make quick response to any hidden threat to the entire power grid. Non-technical losses (NTLs) have always been a major concern for its consequent security risks as well as immeasurable revenue loss. However, various causes of NTL may have different characteristics reflected in the data. Accurately capturing these anomalies faced with such large scale of collected data records is rather tricky as a result. In this paper, we proposed a new methodology of detecting abnormal electricity consumptions. We did a transformation of the collected time-series data which turns it into an image representation that could well reflect users' relatively long term consumption behaviors. Inspired by the excellent neural network architecture used for objective detection in computer vision domain, we designed our deep learning model that takes the transformed images as input and yields joint featured inferred from the multiple aspects the input provides. Considering the limited labeled samples, especially the abnormal ones, we used our model in a semi-supervised fashion that is brought out in recent years. The model is tested on samples which are verified by on-field inspections and our method showed significant improvement.

Model-Protected Multi-Task Learning

Multi-task learning (MTL) refers to the paradigm of learning multiple related tasks together. In contrast, in single-task learning (STL) each individual task is learned independently. MTL often leads to better trained models because they can leverage the commonalities among related tasks. However, because MTL algorithms can ``leak" information from different models across different tasks, MTL poses a potential security risk. Specifically, an adversary may participate in the MTL process through one task and thereby acquire the model information for another task. The previously proposed privacy-preserving MTL methods protect data instances rather than models, and some of them may underperform in comparison with STL methods. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving MTL framework to prevent information from each model leaking to other models based on a perturbation of the covariance matrix of the model matrix. We study two popular MTL approaches for instantiation, namely, learning the low-rank and group-sparse patterns of the model matrix. Our algorithms can be guaranteed not to underperform compared with STL methods. We build our methods based upon tools for differential privacy, and privacy guarantees, utility bounds are provided, and heterogeneous privacy budgets are considered. The experiments demonstrate that our algorithms outperform the baseline methods constructed by existing privacy-preserving MTL methods on the proposed model-protection problem.

A mixed discontinuous Galerkin method with symmetric stress for Brinkman problem based on the velocity-pseudostress formulation

The Brinkman equations can be regarded as a combination of the Stokes and Darcy equations which model transitions between the fast flow in channels (governed by Stokes equations) and the slow flow in porous media (governed by Darcy's law). The numerical challenge for this model is the designing of a numerical scheme which is stable for both the Stokes-dominated (high permeability) and the Darcy-dominated (low permeability) equations. In this paper, we solve the Brinkman model in $n$ dimensions ($n = 2, 3$) by using the mixed discontinuous Galerkin (MDG) method, which meets this challenge. This MDG method is based on the pseudostress-velocity formulation and uses a discontinuous piecewise polynomial pair $\underline{\bm{\mathcal{P}}}_{k+1}^{\mathbb{S}}$-$\bm{\mathcal{P}}_k$ $(k \geq 0)$, where the stress field is symmetric. The main unknowns are the pseudostress and the velocity, whereas the pressure is easily recovered through a simple postprocessing. A key step in the analysis is to establish the parameter-robust inf-sup stability through specific parameter-dependent norms at both continuous and discrete levels. Therefore, the stability results presented here are uniform with respect to the permeability. Thanks to the parameter-robust stability analysis, we obtain optimal error estimates for the stress in broken $\underline{\bm{H}}(\bm{\rm div})$-norm and velocity in $\bm{L}^2$-norm. Furthermore, the optimal $\underline{\bm{L}}^2$ error estimate for pseudostress is derived under certain conditions. Finally, numerical experiments are provided to support the theoretical results and to show the robustness, accuracy, and flexibility of the MDG method.
