Observation of Multiple Topological Corner States in Thermal Diffusion

Higher-dimensional topological meta-materials have more flexible than one-dimensional topological materials, which are more convenient to apply and solve practical problems. However, in diffusion systems, higher-dimensional topological states have not been well studied. In this work, we experimentally realized the 2D topological structure based on a kagome lattice of thermal metamaterial. Due to the anti-Hermitian properties of the diffusion Hamiltonian, it has purely imaginary eigenvalues corresponding to the decay rate. By theoretical analysis and directly observing the decay rate of temperature through experiments, we present the various corner states in 2D topological diffusive system. Our work constitutes the first realization of multiple corner states with high decay rates in a pure diffusion system, which provides a new idea for the design of topological protected thermal metamaterial in the future.

Quantum Algorithm for Unsupervised Anomaly Detection

Anomaly detection, an important branch of machine learning, plays a critical role in fraud detection, health care, intrusion detection, military surveillance, etc. As one of the most commonly used unsupervised anomaly detection algorithms, the Local Outlier Factor algorithm (LOF algorithm) has been extensively studied. This algorithm contains three steps, i.e., determining the k-distance neighborhood for each data point x, computing the local reachability density of x, and calculating the local outlier factor of x to judge whether x is abnormal. The LOF algorithm is computationally expensive when processing big data sets. Here we present a quantum LOF algorithm consisting of three parts corresponding to the classical algorithm. Specifically, the k-distance neighborhood of x is determined by amplitude estimation and minimum search; the local reachability density of each data point is calculated in parallel based on the quantum multiply-adder; the local outlier factor of each data point is obtained in parallel using amplitude estimation. It is shown that our quantum algorithm achieves exponential speedup on the dimension of the data points and polynomial speedup on the number of data points compared to its classical counterpart. This work demonstrates the advantage of quantum computing in unsupervised anomaly detection.

Transport of intense ion beams in plasmas: collimation and energy-loss reduction

We compare the transport properties of a well-characterized hydrogen plasma for low and high current ion beams. The energy-loss of low current beams can be well understood, within the framework of current stopping power models. However, for high current proton beams, significant energy-loss reduction and collimation is observed in the experiment. We have developed a new particle-in-cell code, which includes both collective electromagnetic effects and collisional interactions. Our simulations indicate that resistive magnetic fields, induced by the transport of an intense proton beam, act to collimate the proton beam and simultaneously deplete the local plasma density along the beam path. This in turn causes the energy-loss reduction detected in the experiment.

Photoacoustic digital tooth and image reconstruction of tooth root

Imaging of teeth is very important to doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases. The main imaging modality currently used is Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), which however suffers from ionizing radiation causing potential damage to human body. In this work, photoacoustic imaging is proposed for the imaging of tooth, specifically the tooth root. A photoacoustic digital phantom of the tooth is generated based on clinical CBCT data. The roots encased by alveolar bone are imaged by using the realistic photoacoustic digital phantom in the simulation study. Several image reconstruction algorithms are used and compared to remove the artifacts caused by heterogeneous acoustic velocity distribution.

An Efficient Spatial-Temporal Trajectory Planner for Autonomous Vehicles in Unstructured Environments

As a core part of autonomous driving systems, motion planning has received extensive attention from academia and industry. However, real-time trajectory planning capable of spatial-temporal joint optimization is challenged by nonholonomic dynamics, particularly in the presence of unstructured environments and dynamic obstacles. To bridge the gap, we propose a real-time trajectory optimization method that can generate a high-quality whole-body trajectory under arbitrary environmental constraints. By leveraging the differential flatness property of car-like robots, we simplify the trajectory representation and analytically formulate the planning problem while maintaining the feasibility of the nonholonomic dynamics. Moreover, we achieve efficient obstacle avoidance with a safe driving corridor for unmodelled obstacles and signed distance approximations for dynamic moving objects. We present comprehensive benchmarks with State-of-the-Art methods, demonstrating the significance of the proposed method in terms of efficiency and trajectory quality. Real-world experiments verify the practicality of our algorithm. We will release our codes for the research community

Ring-Rotor: A Novel Retractable Ring-shaped Quadrotor with Aerial Grasping and Transportation Capability

This letter presents a novel and retractable ring-shaped quadrotor called Ring-Rotor that can adjust the vehicle's length and width simultaneously. Unlike other morphing quadrotors with high platform complexity and poor controllability, Ring-Rotor uses only one servo motor for morphing but reduces the largest dimension of the vehicle by approximately 31.4\%. It can guarantee passibility while flying through small spaces in its compact form and energy saving in its standard form. Meanwhile, the vehicle breaks the cross configuration of general quadrotors with four arms connected to the central body and innovates a ring-shaped mechanical structure with spare central space. Based on this, an ingenious whole-body aerial grasping and transportation scheme is designed to carry various shapes of objects without the external manipulator mechanism. Moreover, we exploit a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) strategy that uses a time-variant physical parameter model to adapt to the quadrotor morphology. Above mentioned applications are performed in real-world experiments to demonstrate the system's high versatility.

Masked and Adaptive Transformer for Exemplar Based Image Translation

We present a novel framework for exemplar based image translation. Recent advanced methods for this task mainly focus on establishing cross-domain semantic correspondence, which sequentially dominates image generation in the manner of local style control. Unfortunately, cross-domain semantic matching is challenging; and matching errors ultimately degrade the quality of generated images. To overcome this challenge, we improve the accuracy of matching on the one hand, and diminish the role of matching in image generation on the other hand. To achieve the former, we propose a masked and adaptive transformer (MAT) for learning accurate cross-domain correspondence, and executing context-aware feature augmentation. To achieve the latter, we use source features of the input and global style codes of the exemplar, as supplementary information, for decoding an image. Besides, we devise a novel contrastive style learning method, for acquire quality-discriminative style representations, which in turn benefit high-quality image generation. Experimental results show that our method, dubbed MATEBIT, performs considerably better than state-of-the-art methods, in diverse image translation tasks. The codes are available at \url{https://github.com/AiArt-HDU/MATEBIT}.

Sensing with OFDM Waveform at mmWave Band based on Micro-Doppler Analysis

Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technology has been regarded as one of the innovations in the 6G network. With the channel modeling proposed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) TR 38.901, this paper investigates the sensing capability using the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. Based on micro-Doppler (MD) analysis, we present two case studies, i.e., fan speed detection and human activity recognition, to demonstrate the target modeling with micro-motions, backscattering signal construction, and MD signature extraction using an OFDM waveform at 28 GHz. Simulated signatures demonstrate distinct fan rotation or human motion, and waveform parameters that affect the MD signature extraction are analyzed. Simulation results draw the validity of the proposed modeling and simulation methods, which also aim to facilitate the generation of data sets for various JCAS applications.

CREPES: Cooperative RElative Pose Estimation System

Mutual localization plays a crucial role in multi-robot cooperation. CREPES, a novel system that focuses on six degrees of freedom (DOF) relative pose estimation for multi-robot systems, is proposed in this paper. CREPES has a compact hardware design using active infrared (IR) LEDs, an IR fish-eye camera, an ultra-wideband (UWB) module and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). By leveraging IR light communication, the system solves data association between visual detection and UWB ranging. Ranging measurements from the UWB and directional information from the camera offer relative 3-DOF position estimation. Combining the mutual relative position with neighbors and the gravity constraints provided by IMUs, we can estimate the 6-DOF relative pose from a single frame of sensor measurements. In addition, we design an estimator based on the error-state Kalman filter (ESKF) to enhance system accuracy and robustness. When multiple neighbors are available, a Pose Graph Optimization (PGO) algorithm is applied to further improve system accuracy. We conduct enormous experiments to demonstrate CREPES' accuracy between robot pairs and a team of robots, as well as performance under challenging conditions.

A Decoupled and Linear Framework for Global Outlier Rejection over Planar Pose Graph

We propose a robust framework for the planar pose graph optimization contaminated by loop closure outliers. Our framework rejects outliers by first decoupling the robust PGO problem wrapped by a Truncated Least Squares kernel into two subproblems. Then, the framework introduces a linear angle representation to rewrite the first subproblem that is originally formulated with rotation matrices. The framework is configured with the Graduated Non-Convexity (GNC) algorithm to solve the two non-convex subproblems in succession without initial guesses. Thanks to the linearity properties of both the subproblems, our framework requires only linear solvers to optimally solve the optimization problems encountered in GNC. We extensively validate the proposed framework, named DEGNC-LAF (DEcoupled Graduated Non-Convexity with Linear Angle Formulation) in planar PGO benchmarks. It turns out that it runs significantly (sometimes up to over 30 times) faster than the standard and general-purpose GNC while resulting in high-quality estimates.

Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz for Solving the Minimum Exact Cover Problem

The Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz (QAOA+) is an extension of the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), where the search space is smaller in solving constrained combinatorial optimization problems. However, QAOA+ requires a trivial feasible solution as the initial state, so it cannot be used for problems that are difficult to find a trivial feasible solution. For simplicity, we call them as Non-Trivial-Feasible-Solution Problems (NTFSP). In this paper, we take the Minimum Exact Cover (MEC) problem as an example, studying how to apply QAOA+ to NTFSP. As we know, exact covering (EC) is the feasible space of MEC problem, which has no trivial solutions. To overcome the above problem, the EC problem is divided into two steps to solve. First, disjoint sets are obtained, which is equivalent to solving independent sets. Second, on this basis, the sets covering all elements (i.e., EC) are solved. In other words, we transform MEC into a multi-objective constrained optimization problem, where feasible space consists of independent sets that are easy to find. Finally, we also verify the feasibility of the algorithm from numerical experiments. Our method provides a feasible way for applying QAOA+ to NTFSP, and is expected to expand its application significantly.

Magnetic phase diagram and multiple field-induced states in the intermetallic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ with Ising-like spins

Geometrical frustration and the enhancement of strong quantum fluctuations in two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnets can lead to various intriguing phenomena. Here, we studied the spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Thermodynamic and transport properties, such as magnetization and specific heat together with the resistivity measurements were performed. In zero field, two successive phase transitions were observed at $T_{\rm N1}=1.75\pm 0.02$ K and $T_{\rm N2}=0.49\pm 0.02$ K, respectively. Under magnetic field, $\rm XXZ$-type anisotropy was revealed, with the moments pointing along the easy $c$ axis. For $B\parallel c$, multiple field-induced states were observed, and the magnetic phase diagram was established based on the specific heat and magnetization data. The temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that NdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ is a good metal. It is very likely that both the long-range RKKY interactions and the geometrical frustration play an important roles in this case.

Continuous Implicit SDF Based Any-shape Robot Trajectory Optimization

Optimization-based trajectory generation methods are widely used in whole-body planning for robots. However, existing work either oversimplifies the robot's geometry and environment representation, resulting in a conservative trajectory, or suffers from a huge overhead in maintaining additional information such as the Signed Distance Field (SDF). To bridge the gap, we consider the robot as an implicit function, with its surface boundary represented by the zero-level set of its SDF. Based on this, we further employ another implicit function to lazily compute the signed distance to the swept volume generated by the robot and its trajectory. The computation is efficient by exploiting continuity in space-time, and the implicit function guarantees precise and continuous collision evaluation even for nonconvex robots with complex surfaces. Furthermore, we propose a trajectory optimization pipeline applicable to the implicit SDF. Simulation and real-world experiments validate the high performance of our approach for arbitrarily shaped robot trajectory optimization.

An information-theoretic learning model based on importance sampling

A crucial assumption underlying the most current theory of machine learning is that the training distribution is identical to the test distribution. However, this assumption may not hold in some real-world applications. In this paper, we develop a learning model based on principles of information theory by minimizing the worst-case loss at prescribed levels of uncertainty. We reformulate the empirical estimation of the risk functional and the distribution deviation constraint based on the importance sampling method. The objective of the proposed approach is to minimize the loss under maximum degradation and hence the resulting problem is a minimax problem which can be converted to an unconstrained minimum problem using the Lagrange method with the Lagrange multiplier $T$. We reveal that the minimization of the objective function under logarithmic transformation is equivalent to the minimization of the p-norm loss with $p=\frac{1}{T}$. We applied the proposed model to the face verification task on Racial Faces in the Wild datasets and showed that the proposed model performs better under large distribution deviations.

Non-line-of-sight photoacoustic imaging

Photoacoustic imaging is a promising imaging technique for human brain due to its high sensitivity and functional imaging ability. However, the skull would cause strong attenuation and distortion to the photoacoustic signals, which makes non-invasive transcranial imaging difficult. In this work, the temporal bone is selected as an imaging window to minimize the influence of the skull. Moreover, non-line-of-sight photoacoustic imaging is introduced to enhance the field of view, where the skull is considered as a reflector. Simulation studies are carried out to show that the image quality can be improved with reflected signal considered.

PredRecon: A Prediction-boosted Planning Framework for Fast and High-quality Autonomous Aerial Reconstruction

Autonomous UAV path planning for 3D reconstruction has been actively studied in various applications for high-quality 3D models. However, most existing works have adopted explore-then-exploit, prior-based or exploration-based strategies, demonstrating inefficiency with repeated flight and low autonomy. In this paper, we propose PredRecon, a prediction-boosted planning framework that can autonomously generate paths for high 3D reconstruction quality. We obtain inspiration from humans can roughly infer the complete construction structure from partial observation. Hence, we devise a surface prediction module (SPM) to predict the coarse complete surfaces of the target from the current partial reconstruction. Then, the uncovered surfaces are produced by online volumetric mapping waiting for observation by UAV. Lastly, a hierarchical planner plans motions for 3D reconstruction, which sequentially finds efficient global coverage paths, plans local paths for maximizing the performance of Multi-View Stereo (MVS), and generates smooth trajectories for image-pose pairs acquisition. We conduct benchmarks in the realistic simulator, which validates the performance of PredRecon compared with the classical and state-of-the-art methods. The open-source code is released at https://github.com/HKUST-Aerial-Robotics/PredRecon.

Towards Efficient Trajectory Generation for Ground Robots beyond 2D Environment

With the development of robotics, ground robots are no longer limited to planar motion. Passive height variation due to complex terrain and active height control provided by special structures on robots require a more general navigation planning framework beyond 2D. Existing methods rarely considers both simultaneously, limiting the capabilities and applications of ground robots. In this paper, we proposed an optimization-based planning framework for ground robots considering both active and passive height changes on the z-axis. The proposed planner first constructs a penalty field for chassis motion constraints defined in R3 such that the optimal solution space of the trajectory is continuous, resulting in a high-quality smooth chassis trajectory. Also, by constructing custom constraints in the z-axis direction, it is possible to plan trajectories for different types of ground robots which have z-axis degree of freedom. We performed simulations and realworld experiments to verify the efficiency and trajectory quality of our algorithm.

Quantum Induced Coherence Light Detection and Ranging

Quantum illumination has been proposed and demonstrated to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in light detection and ranging (LiDAR). When relying on coincidence detection, such a quantum LiDAR is limited by the response time of the detector and suffers from jamming noise. Inspired by the Zou-Wang-Mandel experiment, we design, construct and validate a quantum induced coherence (QuIC) LiDAR which is inherently immune to ambient and jamming noises. In traditional LiDAR the direct detection of the reflected probe photons suffers from deteriorating SNR for increasing background noise. In QuIC LiDAR we circumvent this obstacle by only detecting the entangled reference photons, whose single-photon interference fringes are used to obtain the distance of the object, while the reflected probe photons are used to erase path information of the reference photons. In consequence, the noise accompanying the reflected probe light has no effect on the detected signal. We demonstrate such noise resilience with both LED and laser light to mimic the background noise and jamming attack. The proposed method paves a new way of battling noise in precise quantum electromagnetic sensing and ranging.
