The effect of hidden color channels on Nucleon-Nucleon interaction

This letter reports the nucleon-nucleon($NN$) interaction obtained from multi-channel, including hidden color channels, coupling quark model calculation. The results show that the hidden color channels coupling provides the intermediate range attraction which is usually assumed to be due to multi-$π$ or $σ$ meson exchange and that the short and intermediate range $NN$ interaction can be described solely by the fundamental quark-gluon degree of freedom of QCD.

Quark models of dibaryon resonances in nucleon-nucleon scattering

We look for $ΔΔ$ and $NΔ$ resonances by calculating $NN$ scattering phase shifts of two interacting baryon clusters of quarks with explicit coupling to these dibaryon channels. Two phenomenological nonrelativistic chiral quark models giving similar low-energy $NN$ properties are found to give significantly different dibaryon resonance structures. In the chiral quark model (ChQM), the dibaryon system does not resonate in the $NN$ $S$-waves, in agreement with the experimental SP07 $NN$ partial-wave scattering amplitudes. In the quark delocalization and color screening model (QDCSM), the $S$-wave NN resonances disappear when the nucleon size $b$ falls below 0.53 fm. Both quark models give an $IJ^P = 03^+$ $ΔΔ$ resonance. At $b=0.52 $fm, the value favored by baryon spectrum, the resonance mass is 2390 (2420) MeV for the ChQM with quadratic (linear) confinement, and 2360 MeV for the QDCSM. Accessible from the $^3D_3^{NN}$ channel, this resonance is a promising candidate for the known isoscalar ABC structure seen more clearly in the $pn$$\to $$dππ$ production cross section at 2410 MeV in the recent preliminary data reported by the CELSIUS-WASA Collaboration. In the isovector dibaryon sector, our quark models give a bound or almost bound $^5S_2^{ΔΔ}$ state that can give rise to a $^1D_2^{NN}$ resonance. None of the quark models used has bound $NΔ$ $P$-states that might generate odd-parity resonances.

Systematic study of pentaquark states: $qqq-q\bar{q}$ configuration

Group theoretic method for the systematic study of five-quark states with meson-baryon ($q\bar{q}-q^3$) configuration is developed. The calculation of matrix elements of many body Hamiltonian is simplified by transforming the physical bases (meson-baryon quark cluster bases) to symmetry bases (group chain classified bases), where the fractional parentage expansion method can be used. Three quark models, the naive Glashow-Isgur model, Salamanca chiral quark model and quark delocalization color screening model, are used to show the general applicability of the method and general results of constituent quark models for five-quark states are given. The method can also be useful in the calculation of meson-baryon scattering and the study of the five-quark components effect in baryon structure. The physical contents of different model configurations for the same multi-quark system can also be compared through the transformation between different physical bases to the same set of symmetry bases.

Equivalent electric circuit of a carbon nanotube based molecular conductor

We apply our first-principles method to simulate the transient electrical response through carbon nanotube based conductors under time-dependent bias voltages, and report the dynamic conductance for a specific system. We find that the electrical response of the carbon nanotube device can be mapped onto an equivalent classical electric circuit. This is confirmed by studying the electric response of a simple model system and its equivalent circuit.

Study on $N\bar{N}$ $S$-wave Elastic Cross Section and Possible Bound States Within a Constituent Quark Model

In the framework of a chiral constituent quark model, considering the contributions of $π$ annihilation and one-gluon annihilation, the proton-antiproton $S$-wave elastic scattering cross section experimental data can be reproduced by adjusting properly one-gluon annihilation coupling constant. Meanwhile, using the fixed model parameter, we do a dynamical calculation for all possible $S$-wave nucleon-antinucleon states, the results show that, there is no $S$-wave bound state as indicated by a strong enhancement at threshold of $p\bar{p}$ in $J/ψ$ and $B$ decays.

Reentrant spin glass transition in LuFe2O4

We have carried out a comprehensive investigation of magnetic properties of LuFe$_2$O$_4$, using AC susceptibility, DC magnetization and specific heat. A magnetic phase transition around $\sim$236 K was observed with DC magnetization and specific heat measurements, which is identified as a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition based on the nonlinear susceptibility data. Upon further cooling below this temperature, we also observed highly relaxational magnetic behavior: the DC magnetization exhibits history and time dependence, and the real and imaginary part of the AC susceptibility shows large frequency dependence. Dynamic scaling of the AC susceptibility data suggests that this low temperature phase can be described as a reentrant spin glass phase. We also discuss magnetic field dependence of the spin glass transition and aging, memory and rejuvenation effect below the glass transition temperature around 228 K.

Quantum chromodynamics quark benzene

A six-quark state with the benzene-like structure is proposed and studied based on color string model. The calculation with the quadratic confinement show that such structure has the lowest energy among the various hidden color six-quark structures proposed so far. Its possible effect on $NN$ scattering is discussed.

Systematic study of multi-quark states I. qq-qq-\bar{q} configuration

Group theoretic method for the systematic study of multi-quark states is developed. The calculation of matrix elements of many body Hamiltonian is simplified by transforming the physical bases (quark cluster bases) to symmetry bases (group chain classified bases), where the fractional parentage expansion method can be used. Five quark system is taken as example in this study. The Jaffe-Wilczek $qq-qq-\bar{q}$ configuration is chosen as one of examples to construct the physical bases and the transformation coefficients between physical bases and symmetry ones are shown to be related to the ${SU}_{mn}\supset{SU}_m\times{SU}_n$ isoscalar factors and a complete transformation coefficients table is given. The needed isoscalar factors and fractional parentage coefficients had been calculated with our new group representation theory and published before. Three quark models, the naive Glashow-Isgur, Salamanca and quark delocalization color screening, are used to show the general applicability of the new multi-quark calculation method and general results of constituent quark models for five-quark states are given.

Testing the correctness of the Poynting vector \vec E\times\vec B as the momentum density of gauge fields

Following our recent finding that the renowned formula $\vec x\times (\vec E\times\vec B)$ is not the correct density for the electromagnetic angular momentum, here we examine the validity of the Poynting vector $\vec E \times\vec B$ as the electromagnetic momentum density (or energy flux). The competitor is the gauge-invariant canonical momentum $E^i\vec \nabla A^i_\perp$. It often gives the same result as $\vec E\times\vec B$, but we propose that a delicate measurement (of the {\em azimuthal} energy flow in polarized atomic radiations) can make a discrimination. By clarifying the profound difference between two kinds of energy-momentum tensors: the canonical (or mechanical) one and the symmetric (or gravitational) one, we predict that it is $E^i\vec \nabla A^i_\perp$ that would pass the delicate experimental test. Our observations have far-reaching implications for understanding the source of gravity, and the nucleon momentum as well.

Spin and orbital angular momentum in gauge theories (II): QCD and nucleon spin structure

Parallel to the construction of gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum for QED in paper (I) of this series, we present here an analogous but non-trivial solution for QCD. Explicitly gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum operators of quarks and gluons are obtained. This was previously thought to be an impossible task, and opens a more promising avenue towards the understanding of the nucleon spin structure.

Time-dependent density-functional theory for open systems

By introducing the self-energy density functionals for the dissipative interactions between the reduced system and its environment, we develop a time-dependent density-functional theory formalism based on an equation of motion for the Kohn-Sham reduced single-electron density matrix of the reduced system. Two approximate schemes are proposed for the self-energy density functionals, the complete second order approximation and the wide-band limit approximation. A numerical method based on the wide-band limit approximation is subsequently developed and implemented to simulate the steady and transient current through various realistic molecular devices. Simulation results are presented and discussed.

Dilute Liquid of Instanton and Its Topological Charge Dominate the QCD Vacuum

APE smearing and overlap-Dirac operator are combined to filter QCD vacuum configurations. The results obtained from overlap fermions and improved 5Li cooling are compared, both of them exhibit structures of dilute liquid of instanton. Finally the overlap fermions, improved 5Li cooling and APE smearing are combined to calculate the topological charge and identify the structure of QCD vacuum. The results suggest dilute liquid of instanton dominance of topological charge fluctuations in quenched lattice QCD.

A First-Principles Method for Open Electronic Systems

We prove that the electron density function of a real physical system can be uniquely determined by its values on any finite subsystem. This establishes the existence of a rigorous density-functional theory for any open electronic system. By introducing a new density functional for dissipative interactions between the reduced system and its environment, we subsequently develop a time-dependent density-functional theory which depends in principle only on the electron density of the reduced system. In the steady-state limit, the conventional first-principles nonequilibrium Green's function formulation for the current is recovered. A practical scheme is proposed for the new density functional: the wide-band limit approximation, which is applied to simulate the transient current through a model molecular device.
