A Localization Method of High Energy Transients for All-Sky Gamma-Ray Monitor

Fast and reliable localization of high-energy transients is crucial for characterizing the burst properties and guiding the follow-up observations. Localization based on the relative counts of different detectors has been widely used for all-sky gamma-ray monitors. There are two major methods for this counts distribution localization: $χ^{2}$ minimization method and the Bayesian method. Here we propose a modified Bayesian method that could take advantage of both the accuracy of the Bayesian method and the simplicity of the $χ^{2}$ method. With comprehensive simulations, we find that our Bayesian method with Poisson likelihood is generally more applicable for various bursts than $χ^{2}$ method, especially for weak bursts. We further proposed a location-spectrum iteration approach based on the Bayesian inference, which could alleviate the problems caused by the spectral difference between the burst and location templates. Our method is very suitable for scenarios with limited computation resources or time-sensitive applications, such as in-flight localization software, and low-latency localization for rapid follow-up observations.

Combinatorial curvature flows for generalized circle packings on surfaces with boundary

In this paper, we investigate the deformation of generalized circle packings on ideally triangulated surfaces with boundary, which is the $(-1,-1,-1)$ type generalized circle packing metric introduced by Guo-Luo \cite{GL2}. To find hyperbolic metrics on surfaces with totally geodesic boundaries of prescribed lengths, we introduce combinatorial Ricci flow and combinatorial Calabi flow for generalized circle packings on ideally triangulated surfaces with boundary. Then we prove the longtime existence and global convergence for the solutions of these combinatorial curvature flows, which provide effective algorithms for finding hyperbolic metrics on surfaces with totally geodesic boundaries of prescribed lengths.

GECAM Localization of High Energy Transients and the Systematic Error

Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a pair of microsatellites (i.e. GECAM-A and GECAM-B) dedicated to monitoring gamma-ray transients including gravitational waves high-energy electromagnetic counterparts, Gamma-ray Bursts, Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters, Solar Flares and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes. Since launch in December 2020, GECAM-B has detected hundreds of astronomical and terrestrial events. For these bursts, localization is the key for burst identification and classification as well as follow-up observations in multi-wavelength. Here, we propose a Bayesian localization method with Poisson data with Gaussian background profile likelihood to localize GECAM bursts based on the burst counts distribution in detectors with different orientations. We demonstrate that this method can work well for all kinds of bursts, especially for extremely short ones. In addition, we propose a new method to estimate the systematic error of localization based on a confidence level test, which can overcome some problems of the existing method in literature. We validate this method by Monte Carlo simulations, and then apply it to a burst sample with accurate location and find that the mean value of the systematic error of GECAM-B localization is $\sim 2.5^{\circ}$. By considering this systematic error, we can obtain a reliable localization probability map for GECAM bursts. Our methods can be applied to other gamma-ray monitors.

THMA: Tencent HD Map AI System for Creating HD Map Annotations

Nowadays, autonomous vehicle technology is becoming more and more mature. Critical to progress and safety, high-definition (HD) maps, a type of centimeter-level map collected using a laser sensor, provide accurate descriptions of the surrounding environment. The key challenge of HD map production is efficient, high-quality collection and annotation of large-volume datasets. Due to the demand for high quality, HD map production requires significant manual human effort to create annotations, a very time-consuming and costly process for the map industry. In order to reduce manual annotation burdens, many artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have been developed to pre-label the HD maps. However, there still exists a large gap between AI algorithms and the traditional manual HD map production pipelines in accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, it is also very resource-costly to build large-scale annotated datasets and advanced machine learning algorithms for AI-based HD map automatic labeling systems. In this paper, we introduce the Tencent HD Map AI (THMA) system, an innovative end-to-end, AI-based, active learning HD map labeling system capable of producing and labeling HD maps with a scale of hundreds of thousands of kilometers. In THMA, we train AI models directly from massive HD map datasets via supervised, self-supervised, and weakly supervised learning to achieve high accuracy and efficiency required by downstream users. THMA has been deployed by the Tencent Map team to provide services to downstream companies and users, serving over 1,000 labeling workers and producing more than 30,000 kilometers of HD map data per day at most. More than 90 percent of the HD map data in Tencent Map is labeled automatically by THMA, accelerating the traditional HD map labeling process by more than ten times.

Neutral Atmospheric Density Measurement Using Insight-HXMT Data by Earth Occultation Technique

The Earth occultation technique has broad applications in both astronomy and atmospheric density measurements. We construct the background model during the occultation of the Crab Nebula observed by the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) at energies between 6 keV and 100 keV. We propose a Bayesian atmospheric density retrieval method based on the Earth occultation technique, combining Poisson and Gaussian statistics. By modeling the atmospheric attenuation of X-ray photons during the occultation, we simultaneously retrieved the neutral densities of the atmosphere at different altitude ranges. Our method considers the correlation of densities between neighboring atmospheric layers and reduces the potential systematic bias to which previous work may be subject. Previous analyses based on light curve fitting or spectral fitting also lost some spectral or temporal information of the data. In contrast to previous work, the occultation data observed by the three telescopes onboard Insight-HXMT is fully used in our analysis, further reducing the statistical error in density retrieval. We apply our method to cross-check the (semi-)empirical atmospheric models, using 115 sets of occultation data of the Crab Nebula observed by Insight-HXMT. We find that the retrieved neutral density is ~10%, ~20%, and ~25% less than the values of the widely used atmospheric model NRLMSISE-00, in the altitude range of 55--80 km, 80--90 km, and 90--100 km, respectively. We also show that the newly released atmospheric model NRLMSIS 2.0 is generally consistent with our density measurements.

Dynamics simulation and numerical analysis of arbitrary time-dependent $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system based on density operators

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system has attracted extensive attention in recent years because of its unique properties and applications. How to simulate $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system in traditional quantum mechanical system has not only fundamental theoretical significance but also practical value. We propose a dynamics simulation scheme of arbitrary time-dependent $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system based on density operators, and the results are compatible with previous methods based on pure-state vectors. Based on the above, we are able to study the influence of quantum noises on the simulation results with the technique of vectorization of density operators and matrixization of superoperators (VDMS), and we show the depolarizing (Dep) noise is the most fatal and should be avoided as much as possible. Meanwhile, we also give a numerical analysis. We find that the problem of chronological product usually has to be solved not only in the numerical calculation, but also even in the experiment, because the dilated higher-dimensional Hamiltonian is usually time-dependent. Through theoretical analysis and numerical calculation, we find that on the premise of meeting the goal of calculation accuracy and saving computing resources, the time step of calculation and the cut-off term of Magnus series have to be carefully balanced.

Search for Quasi-Periodical Oscillations in Precursors of Short and Long Gamma Ray Bursts

The precursors of short and long Gamma Ray Bursts (SGRBs and LGRBs) can serve as probes of their progenitors, as well as shedding light on the physical processes of mergers or core-collapse supernovae. Some models predict the possible existence of Quasi-Periodically Oscillations (QPO) in the precursors of SGRBs. Although many previous studies have performed QPO search in the main emission of SGRBs and LGRBs, so far there was no systematic QPO search in their precursors. In this work, we perform a detailed QPO search in the precursors of SGRBs and LGRBs detected by Fermi/GBM from 2008 to 2019 using the power density spectrum (PDS) in frequency domain and Gaussian processes (GP) in time domain. We do not find any convinced QPO signal with significance above 3 $σ$, possibly due to the low fluxes of precursors. Finally, the PDS continuum properties of both the precursors and main emissions are also studied for the first time, and no significant difference is found in the distributions of the PDS slope for precursors and main emissions in both SGRBs and LGRBs.

2DPASS: 2D Priors Assisted Semantic Segmentation on LiDAR Point Clouds

As camera and LiDAR sensors capture complementary information used in autonomous driving, great efforts have been made to develop semantic segmentation algorithms through multi-modality data fusion. However, fusion-based approaches require paired data, i.e., LiDAR point clouds and camera images with strict point-to-pixel mappings, as the inputs in both training and inference, which seriously hinders their application in practical scenarios. Thus, in this work, we propose the 2D Priors Assisted Semantic Segmentation (2DPASS), a general training scheme, to boost the representation learning on point clouds, by fully taking advantage of 2D images with rich appearance. In practice, by leveraging an auxiliary modal fusion and multi-scale fusion-to-single knowledge distillation (MSFSKD), 2DPASS acquires richer semantic and structural information from the multi-modal data, which are then online distilled to the pure 3D network. As a result, equipped with 2DPASS, our baseline shows significant improvement with only point cloud inputs. Specifically, it achieves the state-of-the-arts on two large-scale benchmarks (i.e. SemanticKITTI and NuScenes), including top-1 results in both single and multiple scan(s) competitions of SemanticKITTI.

Consistency of a range of penalised cost approaches for detecting multiple changepoints

A common approach to detect multiple changepoints is to minimise a measure of data fit plus a penalty that is linear in the number of changepoints. This paper shows that the general finite sample behaviour of such a method can be related to its behaviour when analysing data with either none or one changepoint. This results in simpler conditions for verifying whether the method will consistently estimate the number and locations of the changepoints. We apply and demonstrate the usefulness of this result for a range of changepoint problems. Our new results include a weaker condition on the choice of penalty required to have consistency in a change-in-slope model; and the first results for the accuracy of recently-proposed methods for detecting spikes.

Parameterized combinatorial curvatures and parameterized combinatorial curvature flows for discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces

Discrete conformal structure on polyhedral surfaces is a discrete analogue of the smooth conformal structure on surfaces that assigns discrete metrics by scalar functions defined on vertices. In this paper, we introduce combinatorial $α$-curvature for discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which is a parameterized generalization of the classical combinatorial curvature. Then we prove the local and global rigidity of combinatorial $α$-curvature with respect to discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which confirms parameterized Glickenstein rigidity conjecture. To study the Yamabe problem for combinatorial $α$-curvature, we introduce combinatorial $α$-Ricci flow for discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces, which is a generalization of Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flow for Thurston's circle packings and Luo's combinatorial Yamabe flow for vertex scaling on polyhedral surfaces. To handle the potential singularities of the combinatorial $α$-Ricci flow, we extend the flow through the singularities by extending the inner angles in triangles by constants. Under the existence of a discrete conformal structure with prescribed combinatorial curvature, the solution of extended combinatorial $α$-Ricci flow is proved to exist for all time and converge exponentially fast for any initial value. This confirms a parameterized generalization of another conjecture of Glickenstein on the convergence of combinatorial Ricci flow, gives an almost equivalent characterization of the solvability of Yamabe problem for combinatorial $α$-curvature in terms of combinatorial $α$-Ricci flow and provides an effective algorithm for finding discrete conformal structures with prescribed combinatorial $α$-curvatures.

A new proof for global rigidity of vertex scaling on polyhedral surfaces

The vertex scaling for piecewise linear metrics on polyhedral surfaces was introduced by Luo, who proved the local rigidity by establishing a variational principle and conjectured the global rigidity. Luo's conjecture was solved by Bobenko-Pinkall-Springborn, who also introduced the vertex scaling for piecewise hyperbolic metrics and proved its global rigidity. Bobenko-Pinkall-Spingborn's proof is based on their observation of the connection of vertex scaling and the geometry of polyhedra in $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space and the concavity of the volume of ideal and hyper-ideal tetrahedra. In this paper, we give an elementary and short variational proof of the global rigidity of vertex scaling without involving $3$-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. The method is based on continuity of eigenvalues of matrices and the extension of convex functions.

Insight-HXMT dedicated 33-day observation of SGR J1935+2154 II. Burst Spectral Catalog

Since April 28, 2020, Insight-HXMT has implemented a dedicated observation on the magnetar SGR J1935+2154. Thanks to the wide energy band (1-250 keV) and high sensitivity of Insight-HXMT, we obtained 75 bursts from SGR J1935+2154 during a month-long activity episode after the emission of FRB 200428. Here, we report the detailed time-integrated spectral analysis of these bursts and the statistical distribution of the spectral parameters. We find that for 15%(11/75) of SGR J1935+2154 bursts, the CPL model is preferred, and most of them occurred in the latter part of this active epoch. In the cumulative fluence distribution, we find that the fluence of bursts in our sample is about an order of magnitude weaker than that of Fermi/GBM, but follows the same power law distribution. Finally, we find a burst with similar peak energy to the time-integrated spectrum of the X-ray burst associated with FRB 200428 (FRB 200428-Associated Burst), but the low energy index is harder.

Insight-HXMT dedicated 33-day observation of SGR J1935+2154 I. Burst Catalog

Magnetars are neutron stars with extreme magnetic field and sometimes manifest as soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs). SGR J1935+2154 is one of the most prolific bursters and the first confirmed source of fast radio burst (i.e. FRB 200428). Encouraged by the discovery of the first X-ray counterpart of FRB, Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) implemented a dedicated 33-day long ToO observation of SGR J1935+2154 since April 28, 2020. With the HE, ME, and LE telescopes, Insight-HXMT provides a thorough monitoring of burst activity evolution of SGR J1935+2154, in a very broad energy range (1-250 keV) with high temporal resolution and high sensitivity, resulting in a unique valuable data set for detailed studies of SGR J1935+2154. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of this observation including detailed burst search, identification and temporal analyses. After carefully removing false triggers, we find a total of 75 bursts from SGR J1935+2154, out of which 70 are single-pulsed. The maximum burst rate is about 56 bursts/day. Both the burst duration and the waiting time between two successive bursts follow log-normal distributions, consistent with previous studies. We also find that bursts with longer duration (some are multi-pulsed) tend to occur during the period with relatively high burst rate. There is no correlation between the waiting time and the fluence or duration of either the former or latter burst. It also seems that there is no correlation between burst duration and hardness ratio, in contrast to some previous reports. In addition, we do not find any X-ray burst associated with any reported radio bursts except for FRB 200428.

The First Insight-HXMT Gamma-Ray Burst Catalog: The First Four Years

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), is China's first X-ray astronomy satellite launched on June 15, 2017. The anti-coincidence CsI detectors of the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard Insight-HXMT could serve as an all-sky gamma-ray monitor in about 0.2-3 MeV. In its first four years of operation, Insight-HXMT has detected 322 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by offline search pipeline including blind search and targeted search. For the GOLDEN sample of Insight-HXMT GRBs, joint analyses were performed with other GRB missions, including Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi/GBM), Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) and Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM). It shows that Insight-HXMT can provide better constraint on GRB spectrum at higher energy band. The properties of Insight-HXMT GRBs are reported in detail, including their trigger time, duration, spectral parameters, peak fluxes of different time scales and fluence. This catalog is an official product of the Insight-HXMT GRB team.

The In-Flight Realtime Trigger and Localization Software of GECAM

Realtime trigger and localization of bursts are the key functions of GECAM, which is an all-sky gamma-ray monitor launched in Dec 10, 2020. We developed a multifunctional trigger and localization software operating on the CPU of the GECAM electronic box (EBOX). This onboard software has the following features: high trigger efficiency for real celestial bursts with a suppression of false triggers caused by charged particle bursts and background fluctuation, dedicated localization algorithm optimized for short and long bursts respetively, short time latency of the trigger information which is downlinked throught the BeiDou satellite navigation System (BDS). This paper presents the detailed design and deveopment of this trigger and localization software system of GECAM, including the main functions, general design, workflow and algorithms, as well as the verification and demonstration of this software, including the on-ground trigger tests with simulated gamma-ray bursts made by a dedicated X-ray tube and the in-flight performance to real gamma-ray bursts and magnetar bursts.

Gain stabilization and consistency correction approach for multiple SiPM-based gamma-ray detectors on GECAM

Each satellite of the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM, mission) consists of 25 SiPM based gamma-ray detectors (GRDs). Although SiPM based GRD has merits of compact size and low bias-voltage, the drift of the SiPM gain with temperature is a severe problem for GRD performance. An adaptive voltage supply source was designed to automatically adjust the SiPM bias voltage to compensate the temperature effects and keep the gain stable. This approach has been proved to be effective during both the on-ground and in-flight tests. The in-flight measured variation of the SiPM gain is within 2%. To reduce the gain non-uniformity of GRDs, an iterative bias voltage adjustment approach is proposed and implemented. The gain non-uniformity is reduced from 17% to 0.6%. In this paper, the gain stabilization and consistency correction approach are presented and discussed in detail.

Prescribing discrete Gaussian curvature on polyhedral surfaces

Vertex scaling of piecewise linear metrics on surfaces introduced by Luo is a straightforward discretization of smooth conformal structures on surfaces. Combinatorial $α$-curvature for vertex scaling of piecewise linear metrics on surfaces is a discretization of Gaussian curvature on surfaces. In this paper, we investigate the prescribing combinatorial $α$-curvature problem on polyhedral surfaces. Using Gu-Luo-Sun-Wu's discrete conformal theory for piecewise linear metrics on surfaces and variational principles with constraints, we prove some Kazdan-Warner type theorems for prescribing combinatorial $α$-curvature problem, which generalize the results obtained by Gu-Luo-Sun-Wu on prescribing combinatorial curvatures on surfaces. Gu-Luo-Sun-Wu conjectured that one can prove Kazdan-Warner's theorems via approximating smooth surfaces by polyhedral surfaces. This paper takes the first step in this direction.

Density-Based Clustering with Kernel Diffusion

Finding a suitable density function is essential for density-based clustering algorithms such as DBSCAN and DPC. A naive density corresponding to the indicator function of a unit $d$-dimensional Euclidean ball is commonly used in these algorithms. Such density suffers from capturing local features in complex datasets. To tackle this issue, we propose a new kernel diffusion density function, which is adaptive to data of varying local distributional characteristics and smoothness. Furthermore, we develop a surrogate that can be efficiently computed in linear time and space and prove that it is asymptotically equivalent to the kernel diffusion density function. Extensive empirical experiments on benchmark and large-scale face image datasets show that the proposed approach not only achieves a significant improvement over classic density-based clustering algorithms but also outperforms the state-of-the-art face clustering methods by a large margin.
