Transfer Heterogeneous Knowledge Among Peer-to-Peer Teammates: A Model Distillation Approach

Peer-to-peer knowledge transfer in distributed environments has emerged as a promising method since it could accelerate learning and improve team-wide performance without relying on pre-trained teachers in deep reinforcement learning. However, for traditional peer-to-peer methods such as action advising, they have encountered difficulties in how to efficiently expressed knowledge and advice. As a result, we propose a brand new solution to reuse experiences and transfer value functions among multiple students via model distillation. But it is still challenging to transfer Q-function directly since it is unstable and not bounded. To address this issue confronted with existing works, we adopt Categorical Deep Q-Network. We also describe how to design an efficient communication protocol to exploit heterogeneous knowledge among multiple distributed agents. Our proposed framework, namely Learning and Teaching Categorical Reinforcement (LTCR), shows promising performance on stabilizing and accelerating learning progress with improved team-wide reward in four typical experimental environments.

Charged black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Weyl gravity

We construct charged asymptotically flat black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Weyl(EMW) gravity. These solutions can be interpreted as generalizations of two different groups: Schwarzschild black hole (SBH) and non-Schwarzschild black hole (NSBH) solutions. In addition, we discuss the thermodynamic properties of two groups of numerical solutions in detail, and show that they obey the first law of thermodynamics.

Galaxy Learning -- A Position Paper

The recent rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI, mainly driven by machine learning research, especially deep learning) has achieved phenomenal success in various applications. However, to further apply AI technologies in real-world context, several significant issues regarding the AI ecosystem should be addressed. We identify the main issues as data privacy, ownership, and exchange, which are difficult to be solved with the current centralized paradigm of machine learning training methodology. As a result, we propose a novel model training paradigm based on blockchain, named Galaxy Learning, which aims to train a model with distributed data and to reserve the data ownership for their owners. In this new paradigm, encrypted models are moved around instead, and are federated once trained. Model training, as well as the communication, is achieved with blockchain and its smart contracts. Pricing of training data is determined by its contribution, and therefore it is not about the exchange of data ownership. In this position paper, we describe the motivation, paradigm, design, and challenges as well as opportunities of Galaxy Learning.

Field theoretical derivation of Lüscher's formula and calculation of finite volume form factors

We initiate a systematic method to calculate both the finite volume energy levels and form factors from the momentum space finite volume two-point function. By expanding the two point function in the volume we extracted the leading exponential volume correction both to the energy of a moving particle state and to the simplest non-diagonal form factor. The form factor corrections are given in terms of a regularized infinite volume 3-particle form factor and terms related to the Lüsher correction of the momentum quantization. We tested these results against second order Lagrangian and Hamiltonian perturbation theory in the sinh-Gordon theory and we obtained perfect agreement.

Deep Sequence Learning with Auxiliary Information for Traffic Prediction

Predicting traffic conditions from online route queries is a challenging task as there are many complicated interactions over the roads and crowds involved. In this paper, we intend to improve traffic prediction by appropriate integration of three kinds of implicit but essential factors encoded in auxiliary information. We do this within an encoder-decoder sequence learning framework that integrates the following data: 1) offline geographical and social attributes. For example, the geographical structure of roads or public social events such as national celebrations; 2) road intersection information. In general, traffic congestion occurs at major junctions; 3) online crowd queries. For example, when many online queries issued for the same destination due to a public performance, the traffic around the destination will potentially become heavier at this location after a while. Qualitative and quantitative experiments on a real-world dataset from Baidu have demonstrated the effectiveness of our framework.

Generative Creativity: Adversarial Learning for Bionic Design

Bionic design refers to an approach of generative creativity in which a target object (e.g. a floor lamp) is designed to contain features of biological source objects (e.g. flowers), resulting in creative biologically-inspired design. In this work, we attempt to model the process of shape-oriented bionic design as follows: given an input image of a design target object, the model generates images that 1) maintain shape features of the input design target image, 2) contain shape features of images from the specified biological source domain, 3) are plausible and diverse. We propose DesignGAN, a novel unsupervised deep generative approach to realising bionic design. Specifically, we employ a conditional Generative Adversarial Networks architecture with several designated losses (an adversarial loss, a regression loss, a cycle loss and a latent loss) that respectively constrict our model to meet the corresponding aforementioned requirements of bionic design modelling. We perform qualitative and quantitative experiments to evaluate our method, and demonstrate that our proposed approach successfully generates creative images of bionic design.

Fluid/gravity correspondence: Second order transport coefficients in compactified D4-branes

We develop the boundary derivative expansion (BDE) formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence to nonconformal version through the compactified, near-extremal black D4-brane. We offer an explicit calculation of 9 second order transport coefficients, i.e., the $τ_π,~τ_π^*,~τ_Π,~λ_{1,2,3}$ and $ξ_{1,2,3}$ for the strongly coupled, uncharged and nonconformal relativistic fluid which is the holographic dual of compactified, near extremal black D4-brane. We also show that the nonconformal fluid considered in this work is free of causal problem and admits the Haack-Yarom relation $4λ_1+λ_2=2ητ_π$.

Implementing Quantum Search Algorithm with Metamaterials

Metamaterials, artificially structured electromagnetic (EM) materials, have enabled the realization of many unconventional electromagnetic properties not found in nature, such as negative refractive index, magnetic response, invisibility cloaking and so on. Based on these man-made materials with novel EM properties, various devices have been designed and realized. However, quantum analog devices based on metamaterials have not been achieved so far. Here we designed and printed metamaterials to perform quantum search algorithm. The structures, comprising of an array of two-dimensional (2D) sub-wavelength air holes with different radii perforated on the dielectric layer, have been fabricated by using 3D printing technique. When an incident wave enters in the designed metamaterials, the profile of beam wavefront is processed iteratively as it propagates through the metamaterial periodically. After roundtrips, precisely the same as the efficiency of quantum search algorithm, searched items will be found with the incident wave all focusing on the marked positions. Such a metamaterial-based quantum searching simulator may lead to remarkable achievements in wave-based signal processors.

Dropping Activation Outputs with Localized First-layer Deep Network for Enhancing User Privacy and Data Security

Deep learning methods can play a crucial role in anomaly detection, prediction, and supporting decision making for applications like personal health-care, pervasive body sensing, etc. However, current architecture of deep networks suffers the privacy issue that users need to give out their data to the model (typically hosted in a server or a cluster on Cloud) for training or prediction. This problem is getting more severe for those sensitive health-care or medical data (e.g fMRI or body sensors measures like EEG signals). In addition to this, there is also a security risk of leaking these data during the data transmission from user to the model (especially when it's through Internet). Targeting at these issues, in this paper we proposed a new architecture for deep network in which users don't reveal their original data to the model. In our method, feed-forward propagation and data encryption are combined into one process: we migrate the first layer of deep network to users' local devices, and apply the activation functions locally, and then use "dropping activation output" method to make the output non-invertible. The resulting approach is able to make model prediction without accessing users' sensitive raw data. Experiment conducted in this paper showed that our approach achieves the desirable privacy protection requirement, and demonstrated several advantages over the traditional approach with encryption / decryption

Bloch oscillations and subwavelength focusing in stacked fishnet metamaterials

In this letter, we introduce stacked fishnet metamaterial for steering light in microwave region. We numerically demonstrate that optical Bloch oscillations and a focus of as small as one sixth of a wavelength can be achieved. The flexibility of varying geometrical parameters of the fishnet slabs provides an efficient way for tuning its local effective media parameters and opens the possibility for controlling light arbitrarily. The experiment verifies subwavelength-sized light focusing effect by scanning magnetic field at the surface of the sample directly.

DeepSleepNet: a Model for Automatic Sleep Stage Scoring based on Raw Single-Channel EEG

The present study proposes a deep learning model, named DeepSleepNet, for automatic sleep stage scoring based on raw single-channel EEG. Most of the existing methods rely on hand-engineered features which require prior knowledge of sleep analysis. Only a few of them encode the temporal information such as transition rules, which is important for identifying the next sleep stages, into the extracted features. In the proposed model, we utilize Convolutional Neural Networks to extract time-invariant features, and bidirectional-Long Short-Term Memory to learn transition rules among sleep stages automatically from EEG epochs. We implement a two-step training algorithm to train our model efficiently. We evaluated our model using different single-channel EEGs (F4-EOG(Left), Fpz-Cz and Pz-Oz) from two public sleep datasets, that have different properties (e.g., sampling rate) and scoring standards (AASM and R&K). The results showed that our model achieved similar overall accuracy and macro F1-score (MASS: 86.2%-81.7, Sleep-EDF: 82.0%-76.9) compared to the state-of-the-art methods (MASS: 85.9%-80.5, Sleep-EDF: 78.9%-73.7) on both datasets. This demonstrated that, without changing the model architecture and the training algorithm, our model could automatically learn features for sleep stage scoring from different raw single-channel EEGs from different datasets without utilizing any hand-engineered features.

Mixed Neural Network Approach for Temporal Sleep Stage Classification

This paper proposes a practical approach to addressing limitations posed by use of single active electrodes in applications for sleep stage classification. Electroencephalography (EEG)-based characterizations of sleep stage progression contribute the diagnosis and monitoring of the many pathologies of sleep. Several prior reports have explored ways of automating the analysis of sleep EEG and of reducing the complexity of the data needed for reliable discrimination of sleep stages in order to make it possible to perform sleep studies at lower cost in the home (rather than only in specialized clinical facilities). However, these reports have involved recordings from electrodes placed on the cranial vertex or occiput, which can be uncomfortable or difficult for subjects to position. Those that have utilized single EEG channels which contain less sleep information, have showed poor classification performance. We have taken advantage of Rectifier Neural Network for feature detection and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network for sequential data learning to optimize classification performance with single electrode recordings. After exploring alternative electrode placements, we found a comfortable configuration of a single-channel EEG on the forehead and have shown that it can be integrated with additional electrodes for simultaneous recording of the electroocuolgram (EOG). Evaluation of data from 62 people (with 494 hours sleep) demonstrated better performance of our analytical algorithm for automated sleep classification than existing approaches using vertex or occipital electrode placements. Use of this recording configuration with neural network deconvolution promises to make clinically indicated home sleep studies practical.

Semantic Image Synthesis via Adversarial Learning

In this paper, we propose a way of synthesizing realistic images directly with natural language description, which has many useful applications, e.g. intelligent image manipulation. We attempt to accomplish such synthesis: given a source image and a target text description, our model synthesizes images to meet two requirements: 1) being realistic while matching the target text description; 2) maintaining other image features that are irrelevant to the text description. The model should be able to disentangle the semantic information from the two modalities (image and text), and generate new images from the combined semantics. To achieve this, we proposed an end-to-end neural architecture that leverages adversarial learning to automatically learn implicit loss functions, which are optimized to fulfill the aforementioned two requirements. We have evaluated our model by conducting experiments on Caltech-200 bird dataset and Oxford-102 flower dataset, and have demonstrated that our model is capable of synthesizing realistic images that match the given descriptions, while still maintain other features of original images.

Chiral vortical effect from the compactified D4-branes with smeared D0-brane charge

By using the boundary derivative expansion formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence, we study the chiral vortical effect from the compactified D4-branes with smeared D0-brane charge. This background corresponds to a strongly coupled, nonconformal relativistic fluid with a conserved vector current. The presence of the chiral vortical effect is induced by the addition of a Chern-Simons term in the bulk action. Except that the non-dissipative anomalous viscous coefficient and the sound speed rely only on the chemical potential, most of the other thermal and hydrodynamical quantities of the first order depend both on the temperature and the chemical potential. According to our result, the way that the chiral vortical effect coefficient depends on the chemical potential seems irrelevant with whether the relativistic fluid is conformal or not. Stability analysis shows that this anomalous relativistic fluid is stable and the doping of the smeared D0-brane charge will slow down the sound speed.

Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation with Generative Adversarial Networks

It's useful to automatically transform an image from its original form to some synthetic form (style, partial contents, etc.), while keeping the original structure or semantics. We define this requirement as the "image-to-image translation" problem, and propose a general approach to achieve it, based on deep convolutional and conditional generative adversarial networks (GANs), which has gained a phenomenal success to learn mapping images from noise input since 2014. In this work, we develop a two step (unsupervised) learning method to translate images between different domains by using unlabeled images without specifying any correspondence between them, so that to avoid the cost of acquiring labeled data. Compared with prior works, we demonstrated the capacity of generality in our model, by which variance of translations can be conduct by a single type of model. Such capability is desirable in applications like bidirectional translation
