A PMT-like high gain avalanche photodiode based on GaN/AlN periodical stacked structure

Avalanche photodiode (APD) has been intensively investigated as a promising candidate to replace photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for weak light detection. However, in conventional APDs, a large portion of carrier energy drawn from the electric field is thermalized, and the multiplication efficiencies of electron and hole are low and close. In order to achieve high gain, the device should work under breakdown bias, where carrier multiplication proceeds bi-directionally to form a positive feedback multiplication circle. However, breakdown is hard to control, in practice, APDs should work under Geiger mode as a compromise between sustainable detection and high gain. The complexity of system seriously restricts the application. Here, we demonstrate an avalanche photodiode holding high gain without breakdown, which means no quenching circuit is needed for sustainable detection. The device is based on a GaN/AlN periodically-stacked-structure (PSS), wherein electron holds much higher efficiency than hole to draw energy from the electric field, and avalanche happens uni-directionally with high efficiency. and a recorded high gain (10^4) tested under constant bias is obtained in a prototype device, wherein the stable gain can be determined by the periodicity of the GaN/AlN PSS. This work not only brings a new light into avalanche multiplication mechanism, but also paves a technological path with high commercial value to realize highly sensitive avalanche devices working under constant bias like PMT.

NUV Star Catalogue from the Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope Survey. First Release

We present a star catalogue extracted from the Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope (LUT) survey program. LUT's observable sky area is a circular belt around the Moon's north pole, and the survey program covers a preferred area for about 2400 deg$^2$ which includes a region of the Galactic plane. The data is processed with an automatic pipeline which copes with stray light contamination, artificial sources, cosmic rays, flat field calibration, photometry and so on. In the first release version, the catalogue provides high confidence sources which have been cross-identified with Tycho-2 catalogue. All the sources have signal-to-noise ratio larger than 5, and the corresponding magnitude limit is typically 14.4 mag, which can be deeper as ~16 mag if the stray light contamination is in the lowest level. A total number of 86,467 stars are recorded in the catalogue. The full catalogue in electronic form is available on line.

Fluid/gravity correspondence: A nonconformal realization in compactified D4 branes

We develop the framework of boundary derivative expansion (BDE) formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence in compactified D4-brane system, which is a nonconformal background used in top-down holographic QCD models. Such models contain the D4-D6 model and the Sakai-Sugimoto (SS) model, with the background of the compactified black D4 branes under the near horizon limit. By using the dimensional reduction technique, we derive a 5D Einstein gravity minimally coupled with 3 scalar fields from the 10D D4-brane background. Following the BDE formalism of fluid/gravity correspondence in the conformal background, we directly derive all the first order transport coefficients for nonconformal gluonic matter. The results of the ratio of the bulk to shear viscosity and the sound speed agree with those obtained from the Green-Kubo method. This agreement guarantees the validity of the BDE formalism of fluid/gravity duality in the nonconformal D-brane background, which can be used to calculate the second order transport coefficients in nonconformal background.

Optical Observations of the Type Ia Supernova 2011fe in M101 for Nearly 500 Days

We present well-sampled optical observations of the bright Type Ia supernova (SN~Ia) SN 2011fe in M101. Our data, starting from $\sim16$ days before maximum light and extending to $\sim463$ days after maximum, provide an unprecedented time series of spectra and photometry for a normal SN~Ia. Fitting the early-time rising light curve, we find that the luminosity evolution of SN 2011fe follows a $t^n$ law, with the index $n$ being close to 2.0 in the $VRI$ bands but slightly larger in the $U$ and $B$ bands. Combining the published ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (NIR) photometry, we derive the contribution of UV/NIR emission relative to the optical. SN 2011fe is found to have stronger UV emission and reaches its UV peak a few days earlier than other SNe~Ia with similar $Δm_{15}(B)$, suggestive of less trapping of high-energy photons in the ejecta. Moreover, the $U$-band light curve shows a notably faster decline at late phases ($t\approx 100$--300 days), which also suggests that the ejecta may be relatively transparent to UV photons. These results favor the notion that SN 2011fe might have a progenitor system with relatively lower metallicity. On the other hand, the early-phase spectra exhibit prominent high-velocity features (HVFs) of O~I $λ$7773 and the Ca~II~NIR triplet, but only barely detectable in Si~II~6355. This difference can be caused either by an ionization/temperature effect or an abundance enhancement scenario for the formation of HVFs; it suggests that the photospheric temperature of SN 2011fe is intrinsically low, perhaps owing to incomplete burning during the explosion of the white dwarf.

Multi-Wavelength Observations of GRB 111228A and Implications for the Fireball and its environment

Observations of very early multi-wavelength afterglows are critical to reveal the properties of the radiating fireball and its environment as well as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We report our optical observations of GRB 111228A from 95 sec to about 50 hours after the burst trigger and investigate its properties of the prompt gamma-rays and the ambient medium using our data and the data observed with {\em Swift} and {\em Fermi} missions. Our joint optical and X-ray spectral fits to the afterglow data show that the ambient medium features as low dust-to-gas ratio. Incorporating the energy injection effect, our best fit to the afterglow lightcurves with the standard afterglow model via the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique shows that $ε_e=(6.9\pm 0.3)\times 10^{-2}$, $ε_B=(7.73\pm 0.62)\times 10^{-6}$, $E_{\rm K}=(6.32\pm 0.86)\times 10^{53}\rm erg$, $n=0.100\pm 0.014$ cm$^{-3}$. The low medium density likely implies that the afterglow jet may be in a halo or in a hot ISM. Achromatic shallow decay segment observed in the optical and X-ray bands is well explained with the long-lasting energy injection from the central engine, which would be a magnetar with a period of about 1.92 ms inferred from the data. The $E_p$ of its time-integrated prompt gamma-ray spectrum is $\sim 26$ KeV. Using the initial Lorentz factor ($Γ_0=476^{+225}_{-237}$) derived from our afterglow model fit, it is found that GRB 111228A satisfies the $L_{\rm iso}-E_{\rm p,z}-Γ_0$ relation and bridges the typical GRBs and low luminosity GRBs in this relation.

Noise Robust IOA/CAS Speech Separation and Recognition System For The Third 'CHIME' Challenge

This paper presents the contribution to the third 'CHiME' speech separation and recognition challenge including both front-end signal processing and back-end speech recognition. In the front-end, Multi-channel Wiener filter (MWF) is designed to achieve background noise reduction. Different from traditional MWF, optimized parameter for the tradeoff between noise reduction and target signal distortion is built according to the desired noise reduction level. In the back-end, several techniques are taken advantage to improve the noisy Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) performance including Deep Neural Network (DNN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long short-term memory (LSTM) using medium vocabulary, Lattice rescoring with a big vocabulary language model finite state transducer, and ROVER scheme. Experimental results show the proposed system combining front-end and back-end is effective to improve the ASR performance.

Data Processing Pipeline for Pointing Observations of Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope

We describe the data processing pipeline developed to reduce the pointing observation data of Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope (LUT), which belongs to the Chang'e-3 mission of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. The pointing observation program of LUT is dedicated to monitor variable objects in a near-ultraviolet (245-345 nm) band. LUT works in lunar daytime for sufficient power supply, so some special data processing strategies have been developed for the pipeline. The procedures of the pipeline include stray light removing, astrometry, flat fielding employing superflat technique, source extraction and cosmic rays rejection, aperture and PSF photometry, aperture correction, and catalogues archiving, etc. It has been intensively tested and works smoothly with observation data. The photometric accuracy is typically ~0.02 mag for LUT 10 mag stars (30 s exposure), with errors come from background noises, residuals of stray light removing, and flat fielding related errors. The accuracy degrades to be ~0.2 mag for stars of 13.5 mag which is the 5σ detection limit of LUT.

The THU-NAOC Transient Survey: the Performance and the First-year Result

The Tsinghua University-National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) Transient Survey (TNTS) is an automatic survey for a systematic exploration of optical transients (OTs), conducted with a 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope at Xinglong station of NAOC. This survey repeatedly covers ~ 1000 square degrees of the north sky with a cadence of 3-4 days. With an exposure of 60 s, the survey reaches a limited unfiltered magnitude of about 19.5 mag. This enables us to discover supernovae at their relatively young stages. In this paper, we describe the overall performance of our survey during the first year and present some preliminary results.

Baryons in the Sakai-Sugimoto model in the D0-D4 background

The baryon spectrum in the Sakai-Sugimoto model in the D4 background with smeared D0 charges is studied. We follow the instanton description of baryons by Hata et al.[Prog. Theor. Phys. 117, 1157]. The background corresponds to an excited state with nonzero glue condensate $\langle {\rm tr} (F_{μν}\tilde F^{μν})\rangle$ which is proportional to the D0 charge density. The baryon size shrinks when we turn on small D0 charge density. But for larger D0 charge density where massive modes in the gauge theory may also take effect, the size of baryons will grow. The difference between baryon masses will become smaller when D0 charge density increases. There may also be indications that the baryon will become unstable and cannot exist for sufficiently large D0 density.

A classification of long-range interactions between two stacks of $p$ \& $p'$-branes

We generalize the computations of the long-range interactions between two parallel stacks of branes in \cite{Wu and Wang, Prof. Lu's lecture notes} to various cases when two stacks of branes are not placed parallel to each other. We classify the nature of interaction (repulsive or attractive) for each special case and this classification can be used to justify the nature of long-range interaction between two complicated brane systems such as brane bound states. We will provide explicit examples in this paper to demonstrate this.

Sakai-Sugimoto model in D0-D4 background

We add smeared D0 charges to the D4 background and discuss Sakai-Sugimoto model under this background. The corresponding gauge theory develops a glue condensate $< tr (F_{μν}\tilde F^{μν})> $. The D8 branes go less deep than in the original S-S model and massless Goldstones are still found in the spectrum. The effects of the condensate on the meson spectra, pion decay constant, and couplings of the vector mesons and Goldstones are then investigated.

Type IIn Supernova SN 2010jl: Optical Observations for Over 500 Days After Explosion

We present extensive optical observations of a Type IIn supernova (SN) 2010jl for the first 1.5 years after the discovery. The UBVRI light curves demonstrated an interesting two-stage evolution during the nebular phase, which almost flatten out after about 90 days from the optical maximum. SN 2010jl has one of the highest intrinsic H_alpha luminosity ever recorded for a SN IIn, especially at late phase, suggesting a strong interaction of SN ejecta with the dense circumstellar material (CSM) ejected by the progenitor. This is also indicated by the remarkably strong Balmer lines persisting in the optical spectra. One interesting spectral evolution about SN 2010jl is the appearance of asymmetry of the Balmer lines. These lines can be well decomposed into a narrow component and an intermediate-width component. The intermediate-width component showed a steady increase in both strength and blueshift with time until t ~ 400 days after maximum, but it became less blueshifted at t ~ 500 days when the line profile appeared relatively symmetric again. Owing to that a pure reddening effect will lead to a sudden decline of the light curves and a progressive blueshift of the spectral lines, we therefore propose that the asymmetric profiles of H lines seen in SN 2010jl is unlikely due to the extinction by newly formed dust inside the ejecta, contrary to the explanation by some early studies. Based on a simple CSM-interaction model, we speculate that the progenitor of SN 2010jl may suffer a gigantic mass loss (~ 30-50 M_sun) in a few decades before explosion. Considering a slow moving stellar wind (e.g., ~ 28 km/s) inferred for the preexisting, dense CSM shell and the extremely high mass-loss rate (1-2 M_sun per yr), we suggest that the progenitor of SN 2010jl might have experienced a red supergiant stage and explode finally as a post-red supergiant star with an initial mass above 30-40 M_sun.

Bubbles and Black Branes in Grand Canonical Ensemble

When the phase structure of the black brane in grand canonical ensemble is discussed, a new bubble phase with the same boundary data is found to exist in this structure. As such, the phase transitions among bubble, black brane and "hot flat space" are possible, therefore giving a much enriched phase structure. We argue that under some conditions, either the grand canonical ensemble itself is unstable or there are some unknown new phases.

Subwavelength electromagnetic diode: one-way response of cascading nonlinear meta-atoms

We propose a scheme for realizing subwavelength electromagnetic diode by employing cascading nonlinear meta-atoms. One-way response is demonstrated on a microwave transmission line comprising of three metallic ring resonators acting as meta-atoms and a varactor as the nonlinear medium inclusion. Experiments show that our implementation can operate simultaneously as forward diode and backward diode at different frequencies. A transmission contrast of up to 14.7dB was achieved between forward and backward transmission. Subwavelength size of our diode should be useful for miniaturization of integrated optical nanocircuits.

An ultra-thin waveguide twist constructed using fish-scale metallic wires

This study theoretically and experimentally investigates the transmission properties of a metamaterial slab comprised of two layers of metallic fish-scale structure arrays and a sandwiched dielectric layer. Calculations show that the asymmetric transmission can be tuned by varying the slab thickness, due to evanescent interlayer coupling. The spatial evolution of the local field inside the structure indicates that the slab functions as a perfect polarization transformer at certain frequencies in the manner of a waveguide twist. Measured transmission spectra are in good agreement with calculated results when material dissipation is considered.

Metallic helix array as a broadband wave plate

This study proposes that a metallic helix array can operate as a highly-transparent broadband wave plate in propagation directions perpendicular to the axis of helices. The functionality arises from a special property of the helix array, namely that the eigenstates of elliptically right-handed and left-handed polarization are dominated by Bragg scattering and local resonance respectively, and can be modulated separately with nearly fixed difference between their wavevectors in a wide frequency range. The wave plate functionality is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated by the transformation of polarized states in a wide frequency range.

Broadband negative refraction in stacked fishnet metamaterial

We demonstrate a scheme to utilize the stacked fishnet metamaterial for all-angle negative refraction and subwavelength imaging within a wide frequency range starting from zero frequency. The theoretical predictions are verified by the finite-difference-in-time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations. The phenomena come from the negative evanescent coupling between the adjacent slab waveguides through the breathing air holes perforated on metal layers.

Spatially coherent surface resonance states derived from magnetic resonances

A thin metamaterial slab comprising a dielectric spacer sandwiched between a metallic grating and a ground plane is shown to possess spatially coherent surface resonance states that span a large frequency range and can be tuned by structural and material parameters. They give rise to nearly perfect angle-selective absorption and thus exhibit directional thermal emissivity. Direct numerical simulations show that the metamaterial slab supports spatially coherent thermal emission in a wide frequency range that is robust against structural disorder.
